SQL Developer can't connect Oracle Database as SYSDBA
Dear all,
Recently,I installed SQL Developer3.0 on my machine, and try to create connection to local oracle database. But one problem confused me.When i login as normal role ,it can connect DB successfully; when i login as sysdba role named sys,it always failed and show" invalid username/password".I am sure the username and password are right ,because i haved connected the oracle DB by pl/SQL with the same username and password. And i also choosed the role as sysdba. Does SQL Developer3.0 not support connect as sysdba? I would very appreciate if someone could give me a hand .Thanks in advance.
Hi 851634,
Do you require a password file for remote sysdba (old link)?
Cannot login as sysdba in Oracle Enterprise Management Console
You may be trying to log in (loopback) over the network as sysdba which needs a password file.

Help how to connecting Oracle SQL Developer 3.0 with Oracle Database 11g
Hello,
I'm new in oracle developer yesterday i setup in my laptop database 11g the last version (11.2.0.1.0), well i follow steps still i got succeed to install, and i got my local host URL and i test my user name and password work very well, my problem now is i try to connect database 11g using Oracle SQL Developer 3.0 (3.0.04.34) but always filed and with my little experience i don't know where the wrong. as i said i test database after finish install is work fine the my URL is https://Ahmed-HP:1158/em and i test my username and password that i already set before is enter normal in my local database, please i need help to know how i connect database with Oracle SQL Developer 3.0 (3.0.04.34).
Thanks,885173 wrote:
EdStevens, thanks for your quick answer, sorry for my explain was doesn't clear, i open oracle sql developer and choose new connection i set connection name system_orcl username:system password:*i set my password that i create when i setup database*
-Now the link that i got after finish install database is https://Ahmed-HP:1158/em so i have question about this point Hostname and port if the link to access database is this https://Ahmed-HP:1158/em so this mean i typing at Hostname:localhost and port:1158 ?
because the message when i test connection always is filed and I'm sure i typing username and password and SID:orcl as i set when install database.port 1158 is what the dbcontrol (Oracle Enterprise Manager) is listening on. OEM is NOT the database. As far as the database is concerned, OEM is "just another client".
Actually, the database doesn't listen for requests on any port. There is another process, the "listener" that listens for requests to connect to the database. Typically, it listens on port 1521. You should have a tnsnames.ora file set up to resolve a connection request to the correct host. You can read more on this at http://edstevensdba.wordpress.com/2011/02/09/sqlnet_overview/ -
SQL Developer can be used for database design
can I use SQL Developer to design the database?
It really depends on what you mean by "can," how complex the schema design is going to be, and your comfort level.
AB is quite right to point out Oracle Designer-- that's a very powerful, very visual tool for creating physical and logical schema designs. It also has a relatively steep learning curve and a relatively large installation footprint. If you need to generate highly complex schema designs, to allow multiple modelers to work together, and you will use the tool frequently enough to justify the training time, Designer is a wonderful tool.
On the other end of the spectrum, however, it's perfectly possible to generate a schema design using SQL*Plus or SQL Developer with a white board or scratch paper nearby to help think through various issues. The tools aren't presenting you with pretty ERDs, they're not automatically translating visual representations of designs to physical implementations, etc. but it's quite possible for a human using those tools to do the translation.
Either way will work-- the constraints of your particular project and your comfort level with various risks will determine which approach is more appropriate.

Oracle Enterprise Manager can't connect to database after installation
Hello, I have a problem with Enterprise Manager. I installed Oracle 10g and the patch 10.2.0.2. After install, I could connect to database from SqlPlus without problems, but when I try to connect from AllPrograms - Oracle - DatabaseControl or since the Web browser with http://servername:1158/em nothing happen. I reviewed the status of dbconsole with emctl status dbconsole but the status is running. I recreated the repository with emca -deconfig.......-repos drop and emca -config ...... -repos create , but nothing happened. I reviewed some threads in this forum, but I didn't find the solution. Finally I could connect from the browser but with http://localhost:1158/em. Do you help me how can I connect from Database Control, because the operators in Computer Center should monitor the instance since there, and when I want to connect since my own PC how can do it?
Thanks for your help and excuse my English, I am from Bogotá Colombia.
Sincerely RubénHi,
Check the network connectivity between db server and pc from where u want to access em.
Check the listener service.
Check firewall settings, it should be off.

SQL Developer 1.5 Connection Problems
Unable to connect to my localhost installation of Oracle 11G in Windows XP environment
SQLPLUS connections look just fine.
I went out to the windows registry to verify the Oracle SID.
The environment ORADLE_SID is set to 'orcl'
I have tried logging in as HR and as SYS. Both work in SQLPLUS. Neither work in Sql Developer.
The connection settings I am using are as follows:
User Name: HR
Password: HR
Oracle Tab Settings:
Role: default
Connection type: basic
OS Authentication: unchecked
Proxy Connection: unchecked
Hostname: localhost
Port: 1521
SID: orcl
Really appreciate your assistance.
Thanks,
KentKent,
Does Oracle monitor this? Yup - I am PM for SQL Developer and various team members, like Turloch, also monitor the forum.
We use thin or thick JDBC drivers to connect to the Oracle Database from SQL Developer, Turloch was trying alternatives. You should be able to connect using the thin JDBC driver, not using tns. (Basic Connection)
When you try the Basic connection, please can you ensure that the Preference (Tools -> Preferences -> Database- Advanced Parameters) "use OCI/Thick driver" is not selected.
Instead of localhost, can you insert the IP address of your machine?
I have one other question - when you installed SQl Developer 1.5, did you install it into a new empty directory?
Finally, if you have a support contract for the Database, you can contact Metalink and open a SR. There you should be able to track your progress and they can help you get connected.

SQL developer cannot see connection info from tnsnames.ora file
Greetings All,
I have been using sql developer for a while. Currently on 3.0.04.34.
I have 16 database connections.
Everything was working fine until yesterday.
Today when I tried to connect to a database from the list of connections I am getting following error:
Invalid connection information specified. Verify url format for specified driver.
When I pull up the property for this connection -connection type is still TNS, Netwrok Alias is now greyed out and what was in Netwrok Alias has shifted to Connect Identifier.
When I try to create a new connection I do not see entry from tnsnames.ora file for the databse I am trying to connect to in the Network Alias drop down list.
I can connect to this database from sqlplus.
Has anyone seen this behavior? Does any one know the fix for this?
Thanks.Hi,
Maybe your preference settings got corrupted, or the Tnsnames.ora file got moved to somewhere SQL Developer can't find it.
Are you using either:
1. Tools|Preferences|Database|Advanced|Tnsnames Directory, or a
2. TNS_ADMIN environment variable
to point to your Tnsnames? Having one of those should enable the Network Alias drop-down list to get populated. Otherwise, if the values moved to Connection Identifier are correct, then you won't be to connect in that mode without also having an Oracle client installed with an 11.1 JDBC thick driver (ocijdbc11.dll).
If there is no issue with the Tnsnames. ora location, it might be a good idea to use Export Connections to make a backup of your connections. Then you can try deleting the connections from SQL Developer and re-importing them. Even if that doesn't fix the problem, you should be no worse off.

Gary

Which sql developer version will support oracle 8.1.7
hi
which sql developer version will support oracle 8.1.7 or is it necessary to use plsql developer to connect to database (oracle 8.1.7)Hi,
SQL Developer version 1.2.1 is able to connect to 8.1.7 with limited functionality (prepared reports and browser for objects could not work)..
Next version (tested with 3.2 64-bit) of SQL developer could be "hacked" to connect to 8.1.7 by simply copy file C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\jdbc\lib\classes12.zip from Oracle client prior 11
into appropriate jdk\jre\lib\ext folder. -
SQL Developer does not support Oracle 8i
Hi,
I was waiting a tool from Oracle like SQL Developer for a long time, finally it came, but I am a little disapointed, so Why SQL Developer does not support Oracle 8i? Other free tools like SQUIRREL can do it. I also have worked in previous projects using PL/SQL Developer and it works fine...Why a native Oracle tool can not do it?
I am in a project where we have to upgrade the Oracle database to a newer version, but I cannot have access to the old one...
I know there are some threads in this forum, and some people can work with 8i with no issues. Can anyone who works with SQL Developer and Oracle 8i please tell me how to do it?
Thanks,

Edited by: javierlarota on Dec 9, 2009 5:41 AMThat's what I thought, the issue is more commercial ($$$) than technical. Anyway...I downloaded the version 1.1 but now I am getting an ORA-02248: invalid option for ALTER SESSION error. 00604. 00000 "error occurred at recursive SQL level %s".

How to connect Oracle database from Active Server page
Hi
This is srinivas aluri
I have developed an application using ASP and MS-SQL7.
Now i want to port this application to Oracle 8i database
I have written my connection in seperate file called
connection.inc using SQL OLEDB provider
If i have to connect oracle database what will be my provider
and what is the exact code for this connection string
Here i am giving the code of SQL databse connection string
strcon= Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Persist Security Info=False;User
ID=sa;Initial Catalog=prjdb;Data Source=servername
i have tried by changing the provider name from SQLOLEDB.1 to
OraOLEDB.oracle
but i could not able connect the database.
It is giving provider not found or not properly installed error.
But the same code is perfectly working from Visual Basic code.it depends on configuration your going to choose, there are two ways--
- Using X/Open standards, for this
you have to make an entry of Resource manager in $TUXDIR/udataobj/RM file.
Then in UBBConfig file in GROUPS section u have to set Openinfo.
It also depend on which database you are going to use.
In your service now you need to call tpopen() API from tpsvrinit() function.
- Other possibility is, take an implicit connection using Pro*C or Pro*Cobol whatever platform you are using.
EXEC SQL Connect ... -
