SQL Developer Session Browser?

Does SQL Developer have any counterpart of TOAD's Session Browser (to see who else is hitting the database and with what queries)?

Thanks to both of you! This forum rocks! I am in the process of putting together a recommendation that we move from TOAD to SQL Developer; and tracking down some of the most-loved TOAD features in SQL Developer is sometimes difficult for a newbie like myself.
Again, many thanks!

  • SQL Developer High Memory Consumption 3.2.20.09.87

    Hello,
I have been using SQL developer for quite some time and had initially had problems in the past with high memory consuption when I use this tool.
I have received and applied advice from this forum and while it had helped a little, the majority of the high memory consuption remained an issue.
I finally got more time to dig around and try to specifically isolate where the problem seems to be coming from and here is what I found.
*1)* I have removed the Check for Updates feature
*2)* I have turned off many of the extensions except for DBA Navigator, Real Time SQL Monitoring, SearchBar and Snippet.
*3)* When I start a fresh SQL Developer Session and initiate a Oracle Connection the application consumes roughly 148 meg fo RAM
*4)* When I open my Windows Task Manager and watch the memory allocated to SQL Developer I notice it goes up when I move my mouse over the SQL Developer tool and When I run through menus at roughly 5k a second or so and the memory is never released back to the system.
*5)* When I run a Large SQL to the grid the memory jumps by about 100 meg or so and will continue to do so every time I repeat the SQL until SQL Developer consumes roughly 748 meg of RAM.
*6)* 748 Meg of RAM seems to be the number when SQL Developer (with one Oracle connection) no longer continues to consume more and then not return the memory to the system.
Is there a way to have SQL Developer automatically clear up it's active memory usage without closing it down and restarting it?
Why does SQL Developer continue to consume more and more memory just from moving your mouse over it and/or by navigating menus?

    Aces!!! You nailed it Gary...
    Thank you.
I applied fixed noted in Re: Reduce SQLDeveloper memory footprint with JDK 1.7
For others, to summarize my changes.
    product\11.2.0\client_3\sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.conf
    AddVMOption -XX:+UnlockExperimentalVMOptions
    AddVMOption -XX:+UseG1GC
    AddVMOption -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=50
    AddVMOption -XX:GCPauseIntervalMillis=200
    AddVMOption -XX:MaxPermSize=128M
    AddVMOption -Xms50M
    AddVMOption -Xmx384M
    AddVMOption -XX:MinHeapFreeRatio=10
    AddVMOption -XX:MaxHeapFreeRatio=10
    product\11.2.0\client_3\sqldeveloper\ide\bin\ide.conf
comment the following two lines as shown below
    #AddVMOption -Xmx640M
    #AddVMOption -Xms128M
Now SQL Developer runs at roughly 500 meg.
I guess the only thing I have left to ask others reviewing this would be if there is a way to get these memory values down without having much adverse impacts on SQL Developer based on newer JVM switches/functionalities.
The posts that drove these changes are old from a technologoical perspective :) 2010.

  • Setting/using a variable in a package in SQL Developer

The 10g db I'm working with has a package that contains a variable and routines to set and get the value of the variable. The variable is used in a number of views to tailor data displayed according to the variable value. This all works well in applications, which set the variable after a connection is opened and then issue queries against the views, and then close the connection.
This also works well in Toad - I can open Toad, run a package routine to set the value and then open views (or run queries against views) in Toad to see how different variable values effect the data displayed. The package variable maintains its value so long as Toad is open, which seems to imply that Toad keeps a connection open.
But I can't use SQL Developer in the same way. I can run the SET routine, but it has no effect in on views subsequently run. When running the SET routine, setting the value to 1, the output is:
Connecting to the database HERC DB.
    Process exited.
Disconnecting from the database HERC DB.
I can then run the GET routine, but the value of the variable is always zero:
Connecting to the database HERC DB.
    v_Return = 0
    Process exited.
Disconnecting from the database HERC DB.
The implication seems to be that a connection is made, the routine is run and then the connection is closed. The closing of the connection resets the variable. Is there some way I can have SQL Developer behave like Toad, such that the package variable value is maintained for my SQL Developer session? I've looked at connection roperties and application preferences, but I've not seen anything that seems to be related keeping a connection open.
BTW, I have tried the "connection startup script", but to no avail. Perhaps I've doen this improperly; the script simply attempts to invoke the package set routine, like so: myPkg.set_identity(1)
    Thanks.

When running stored PL/SQL through the IDE context node or editor, indeed a new session is opened and consequently closed on completion after committing. Although great for having the IDE free to continue working, it does have its drawbacks when you want variables to persist and changes to be visible in the IDE before committing.
To prevent the new session and the commit, just call the PL/SQL from a worksheet (in a call, query or anonymous block).
The startup script should work in that respect, but make sure to wrap your call in an anonymous block, else you'll get a syntax error.
    Hope that helps,
    K.

  • SQL Developer 3.2 - Exporting data with TIMESTAMP datatype

    Hi,
We have users that are attempting to export data with the Timestamp format to Excel (xls format) using SQL Developer 3.2.  When attempting to sort the Timestamp in either asc or desc order, Excel is having issues sorting correctly.  I suggested that the user just do all the sorting within their SQL Developer session but they require the ability to slice and dice in Excel.
This is definitely not an issue with Excel as the users have previously exported Timestamp data from Toad and been able to sort without issue.  Any thoughts as to what might resolve this issue?
    Thanks.

We're not formatting timestamps in Oracle as numbers/dates in Excel. They'll need to properly format the Excel column/cells to get it to sort the way they want vs being treated as simple strings.

  • Run sp from Oracle SQL Developer

    Hi,
Anbody can help me to find why I cant' see output after running my simple sp lke below. When I ran create View from sql it's fine, I see <Statetement Output> window displayed, and see new View.
Not the case when I do sp, I can compile it and get "compiled" status on Messages pane, not sure is't compiled sucessfully or not. But then pressing RUN green arrow, or right click - RUN nothing happenes, no new view, no any output.
I defenetely has all rights to run sp as per our admin.

I see that you running it all from command line, right ?
It's still different on my SQL Developer session, I don't have anything on messages pane and again I don't see output i.e. View created.
Can anybody share opinions how to run this sp from Oracle SQL Developer? I expect to see newly created V2c View in my object list upon execution.

  • How to browse Java Source in PL/SQL Developer

As I use PL/SQL Developer for developing, for the first time I've just tried to write and compile a java source.
After compiling the java source succesfully, I can see it by selecting it from the system table USER_SOURCE where it's defined as TYPE JAVA SOURCE, but I'd like to know where and if it's possible to browse it in the left window list of the panel of PL/SQL Developer like it happens for Procedures, Packages, ... I mean is there a way to edit the java source created without selecting it from USER_SOURCE but in a better way as it's possibile for the procedures in PL/SQL Developer?
    Thanks

Yes, It is possible. Check the option Tools->Browser. Then in the browser you can find it.

  • Kill DBA session feature in SQL Developer

    Hi All,
Like in TOAD , we have a Kill/DBA session option is on toolbar and we can easily trace down the sessions running as well as SID and serial number ..... Do We have similar feature on SQL Developer ?
Currently my SQL Developer version is 1.0.0.14.67 and Build Main 14.67

    it's in sqldev 1.1 (in reports/database administration/sessions/sessions)

  • Oracle SQL Developer does not browse Sybase's objects

I had installed and configured jtds-1.2.5.jar in Oracle SQL Developer for Sysbase connection. Oracle SQL Developer does not browse any objects. Why? Can you please provide a solution?

    Hi,
Can you provide some more information into what you are experiencing.
What version of SQL Developer are you using?
Did you install the jtds jar under the
Tools > Preferences > Database > Third Party JDBC Driver
Is the Sybase tab available in the new connection dialog?
Did you select the default database in the connection dialog?
Can you run a query against the Sybase database from the SQL Developer worksheet?
Note that JTDS 1.2 is the only supported version. There maybe issues with other versions.
    Regards,
    Dermot.

  • Querying uncommitted session data in SQL Developer debugger

I'm trying to analyze a large PL/SQL program that performs table creation, data insertion, and conditional updates to temporary tables. Is there a way to query the uncommitted data in the session in which the PL/SQL is running while stopped at a breakpoint? I see that watches make variables available for inspection, but I'd like to query data in the temp tables using a select statement to see what is there while the debugger is stopped at a breakpoint.
This is using SQL Developer 1.2 on MS Windows XP against an Oracle 10g database.

Well, no. You'd have to change your code to include these calls and fill variables you can monitor with the debugger. A lot of work in development, impossible for production...
This would make a great request for the SQL Developer Exchange though: like the VB/Access Immediate window, a worksheet linked to the debugger session. You'll have my vote if you add it.
    K.

  • SQL Developer 3.2 : Unable to browse java source in the db

    Hi:
I noticed a regression in SQL Developer 3.2 in respect to 3.1 (on windows).
as of SQL Developer 3.1.7.7.42 I was able to browse java sources stored and compiled in the database.
The tabs "Details", "Source", "Policies" were correctly populated. If I had to complain about something, the names of the classes were "shortened" so that I saw "c932e55e_PrintDebug" instead of "my/company/application/package/PrintDebug".
I have tested the 3.2 release.
Now, the class names are complete, but the tabs are empty. I am also unable to retrieve the source of a class (as it was possible in 3.1)
Does this happen to other people?
    Thanks,
    Andrea

Thanks for the feedback, it is good to know I am not alone :-)
    I did some further tests.
I enabled logging in sqldeveloper.conf, and found this query I believe to be the culprit:
    Prepared:with src_name as (select source n from Dba_java_classes
    where lower(name)=lower(:NAME) and rownum = 1)
    select text||decode(substr(text,length(text)),chr(10),null,chr(13),null,chr(10)) source
    from Dba_source
    where owner= :OWNER
    and type = 'JAVA SOURCE'
and (name in (select n from src_name) or name in (select owner || '/' || n from src_name)
    or lower(name) = lower(:NAME))
    order by line
Previously :NAME was populated with the java short name, while now it has the java long name.
In fact, if I compile a class where short name and long name are the same, it works.
In DBA_JAVA_CLASSES name is the long name, while in DBA_SOURCE it is the short name (at least this is what I observed).
So I believe that this is truly a regression.
Anyone (from dev) can confirm this?
    Thanks,
    Andrea

  • Monitoring sessions invoked by a user SQL Developer

    Hello Everyone ,
I am a DBA and lot of developers use SQL Developer for their tasks. Off late we have been facing few issues with SQL Developer.
Developers close the working session by "alt+f4" and strangely their sessions are active in the DB's. What is the cause for this ?
Rollback of DML statements takes hours for statements submitted by SQL Developer.
Does OCI driver help in any way ?
Is there any way that I can allow individual users to monitor their sessions in SQL Developer?
Suppose a user connects with a generic application username "xyz" , can I allow the user "xyz"  to monitor sessions invoked by him and also provide him privileges to kill his/her own session.
We are facing lot of performance issues , so help in this regard would be highly appreciated.
Even pointing me towards appropriate documentation would do.
    Thanks in anticipation.

Once the DB begins work on a task it will continue that work until: 1) the work is complete, 2) an exception occurs or 3) it discovers that the client is no longer there.
If you begin a transaction (complex query, sorts, etc) that is lengthy it may be a while before the DB even tries to communicate with the client. Then all of that work must be rolled back and the rollback (e.g. for an update or delete) can take much longer than the query took to begin with. That is just the way Oracle works.
If a user connects as "xyz" then the only 'sessions invoked by him' are that ONE session. Any other user might also create a session by connecting as "xyz"; Oracle has no way of knowing if ALL sessions connecting as "xyz" belong to the same person or not.
The ALTER SYSTEM privilege must be granted to allow someone to 'kill his/her own session' but that privilege would allow them to kill any other session, including system sessions.
You could write a procedure to try to control the privilige, as in the following thread, but that also has risks:
    https://forums.oracle.com/thread/256935
It is a DBA responsibility to control sessions, not the developers. You should NOT give this ability to the developers IMHO. If your developers are abusing your system it indicates that they need more training in how to prevent runaway queries. A common cause of the problem you describe is when a developer submits a query and then thinks they can just cancel it and start over and they DO NOT UNDERSTAND the first statement I made above: Oracle will keep working.
The proper solution to your problem is to begin logging your developer's requests for session termination so that you can properly monitor the problem and detect developers that need additional instruction or mentoring to keep the problem from happening. Although anyone, even experts, can accidentally let a query get out of control, your problem doesn't occur very frequently for experienced developers.
The DISCONNECT option only politely requests Oracle to terminate the session so it make take considerable time to clean everything up.
If you really need to terminate the session you need to use DISCONNECT IMMEDIATE. See the disconnect session clause of alter system in the sql language doc
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28286/statements_2013.htm#sthref4725
    {quote}
    DISCONNECT SESSION Clause
Use the DISCONNECT SESSION clause to disconnect the current session by destroying the dedicated server process (or virtual circuit if the connection was made by way of a Shared Sever). To use this clause, your instance must have the database open. You must identify the session with both of the following values from the V$SESSION view:
For integer1, specify the value of the SID column.
For integer2, specify the value of the SERIAL# column.
If system parameters are appropriately configured, then application failover will take effect.
The POST_TRANSACTION setting allows ongoing transactions to complete before the session is disconnected. If the session has no ongoing transactions, then this clause has the same effect described for as KILL SESSION.
The IMMEDIATE setting disconnects the session and recovers the entire session state immediately, without waiting for ongoing transactions to complete.  If you also specify POST_TRANSACTION and the session has ongoing transactions, then the IMMEDIATE keyword is ignored.
If you do not specify POST_TRANSACTION, or you specify POST_TRANSACTION but the session has no ongoing transactions, then this clause has the same effect as described for KILL SESSION IMMEDIATE.

  • SQL developer 3.1 in schema browser doesn't show package body

    Hi,
When i search a package with schema browser, i can't see the package body of other owner, the menu "edit body" is disabled.
My user as select any dictionary et select_catalog_role
When i connect with a DBA's user, i can see all.
I'am on windows with sqldev 3.1
    Thanks

    Hi erifet,
This one seems to go back and forth. It was originally fixed in Schema Browser for 3.0. The "Edit Body" was greyed out, but an "Open Body" icon in the code editor toolbar for Package Spec was enabled. Here is the forum reference:
30EA1 package bodies missing in schema browser still not fixed
In 3.1, both "Edit Body" and "Open Body" are greyed out, and that applies both to Schema Browser and Connection Navigator for Other Users packages, so at least 3.1 is consistent. The difference between the Browser and the Navigator is Schema Browser has no option to display a Package Body type (must go through Package Spec type), while the Connection Navigator displays a Package Body node type in the tree beneath the Spec node. In the forum thread AM references, Vadim explains what 3.1 does: it uses the ALL_OBJECTS view, which apparently does not include package bodies. Off-hand I'm not sure why it does not include them, and the following link doesn't shed any light:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14237/statviews_1001.htm
Adding the execute privilege on the package does not help either. At least you have the workaround of using the Connection navigator to view the package body metadata (code) of Other Users if you have been granted either SELECT_CATALOG_ROLE or SELECT ANY DICTIONARY. As for returning to the 3.0 Schema Browser behavior, perhaps Vadim will notice your post and have some explanation as to why or why not that may be possible.

  • Browsing multiple schemas in SQL Developer

    Hello,
I have been using Toad before and I just started using SQL Developer. In Toad we have the abillity to browse through multiple schemas by selecting the appropriate schema from the drop down list. However when I login via SQL Developer it seems I get to browse only the schema associated with my username even though I can run queries against tables that reside in other schemas. How do I browse through multiple schemas via SQL Developer? I am using SQL Developer v1.2.1.
    Regards.

    Hi,
