SQL Reporting query

Question

Hi,
I've a requirement.It would be of great help if you could give pointers on how to achieve this
Following is the table structure
EMPNo ENAME DEPTNO JOB
1 A 10 CL
2 B 20 BL
3 C 10 DL
4 D 30 EL
I want to write a query which will display the result as below
10
A
C
20
B
30
D
How to go about this .I need to write a SQL query to achieve this with /without using a DB specific functions.
Any help would be highly appreciated.

Hi, Sreekumar,
You can use GROUP BY GROUPING SETS to do that. Since you didn't post CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements for your own table, I'll use scott.emp to show how:
SELECT       CASE
           WHEN  GROUPING (ename) = 0  THEN  ename
                                                 ELSE  TO_CHAR (deptno)
       END     AS name
FROM       scott.emp
GROUP BY  GROUPING SETS ( (deptno, ename)
                          , (deptno)
ORDER BY  deptno
,            ename          NULLS FIRST
