Hi all,
I need to create a new physical architecture for a SQL Server database. In Technology I have no SQL Server technology template. Some one can tell me please where I can take the xml template?

You should have the "Microsoft SQL Server" technology available in your topology unless you have explicitly deleted it. This technology gets added out of the box as part of master repository creation.
You might have hidden all the unused technology. You can undo that by clicking on Topology drop down icon and unselecting "Hide unused technologies" option.
Otherwise the xml file for the technology can be found in the same folder where KMs are delivered.

Not sure what you mean by data visualization. If you are talking about an OLAP layer that only contains metadata that sits directly on a OLTP system with large data volumes, I would suggest ROLAP with SSAS. Check out this paper for further details.

Running tasks in parallel - what SQL Server technology to use?

we need to process this situation:
There is one "central" database (contains all data). There are many branch-databases (contain data copied from central database). Central and branch-databases are on different servers.
Records are inserted/updated only into central database. These records then need to be inserted/updated to branch-databases. There is also some synchro logic (not all tables, not all records, not all columns, other conditions...). This kind of synchronization
process is executed by user (not autorun).
Suppose stored procedure SynchronizeDataToBranch(@BranchID int). We need to run this procedure for every branch. Running should be in parallel. How to achieve this?

To do what you describe, you would need to create an SSIS package with an Execute SQL Task for every branch to run at the same time. However, SSIS will limit the number of objects running by the number of CPUs.

I would suggest you look at Transactional Replication with a filter, instead. Once setup, it will not require any maintenance and be automatic.

Insert data from SQL Server 2008 St.Ed to ORACLE 11gr2 St. Edition

Dear all,
I'm searching a solution for faster transmission of data of a db SQL Server (2008 St. edition) vs PROD db that is an ORACLE 11gr2 St. edition too.
Actually this operation spend 1,5 hours but I'd like cut this time because size of the data grow up in future and this time could be a serious problem ....
Looking on Oracle Enterprise Manager I've seen that main problem is about commit .. SQL Server every record insert into Oracle TBL generate a commit ... unfortunately I cannot insert when commit must be done ... If will be solved it probably may be solved situation ...

If you are depending on MS SQL server technology to do this, you are going to be stuck with the performance of that technology.
A few weeks ago we had a need to load institute a daily load of or DW from a MSSQL database. The MS-centric person responsible developed a procedure (using MS tools) that took 4.5 hours to load 1.2 million rows. I ran a session trace and the tkprof report revealed exactly what has already been described. Single row insert and commit. I knocked together a PL/SQL procedure that did a single INSERT .. (SELECT .. FROM TABLE@MSSQL). and it ran in 4 minutes. Using the Oracle transparent gateway for ODBC.

MSFT has also built SQL Server Service Templates that will do this for you - you download the template, add your OS disk, add the SQL install media and go.

SQL Server 2008 Profiler--Templates Missing

For some reason (even after an uninstall, reinstall and updating the the Community Update) there are no templates visible in the Profiler for SQL Server 2008. On another system it works fine but the Trace Provider Type shows "Microsoft SQL Server 2008". On the problem system it shows "Microsoft SQL Server 10.0".

Here is the actual answer you were all looking for:
The server you are connecting to is a 10.50 sql server and your machine doesnt have a folder for that. So to fix it, copy your 100 folder (found: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Profiler\Templates\Microsoft SQL Server\100) making a
new folder in the same location named 1050.
Everything will work fine now.

Blank values returned from SQL Server Convert to Query Template

I am attempting to migrate Query Templates from Oracle to SQL Server. In the Oracle version I am using TO_CHAR to convert a date to a particular string format. To return the same string format in SQL Server I have to use CONVERT. The TO_CHAR returns a value which is displayed by the Query Template Test function. However, in the case of the CONVERT a blank is returned even though it works perfectly well when I run the same query in SQL Server Management Studio. Can anyone tell me why is this happening or suggest a fix? Thanks. John.

Glad that did the trick.
Native client tools like SQLPlus, Toad, Query Analyzer, etc. will often not care about column names, sometimes labelling the column as the full messy expression and sometimes calling it Expr1, but when doing aggregate expression or conversion type columns in an MII query you should adopt the habit of aliasing the columns in the query.
What a better way to control the situation than to dictate it in your request

Does the Office 2013 Professional Plus template include sql server native client 10.0?

Using the Office 365 trial subscription image - the sql server native client 10.0 is not included in this image.
The reason for the question is that I'd like to link an MS Access database front end to SQL Azure and it is quite helpful to have the sql server native client 10.0.

Unfortunately the Office 365 ProPlus (Subscription required) (Uploaded on 11/26/2014) image template
does not include the SQL Server Native Client.
As of now you would need to
create a custom image template with the required software and upload it.
I just created one a couple of days ago for a customer that had what you are requesting plus a few extras. In their case they have a custom application that they needed to connect to SQL Server on an IaaS VM so I built the custom
image to accommodate that plus other requirements.

SQL Server CE v4 Bin Deployment

I'm trying to create a VERY simple test web application to get SQL CE4 and bin deployment nailed. It is proving difficult. I've read and I beieve followed all the various pieces of advice and guidelines Google could throw my way. Still no joy :-(
So I've got one ASP.Net web application (the default created by the VS2010 template) with a SQL CE4 database added to the App_Data folder. It has one table with two fields (identity and string). A data grid has been dropped on the About page and
connected to the database using a SQLDataSource. This shows the data ok. I run the webpage using the VS2010 IIS on my development PC and it works ok.
I follow the instructions for a bin deploy and copy the website to my test server (Windows Server 2008 R2 running IIS7). Access to the database is denied. My test server has a number of different websites deployed to it using various technologies; Silverlight,
ASP.Net, MVC3 (bin deployed) and they all work fine. I have set up this website just as I would any other.
I'm tired after a day of reading and banging my head on the table and going out for a beer! Perhaps I'll have a moment of clarity at the bar...
In the meantime, can anybody quickly build and deploy a similarly simple test web app just to confirm it's me in error and not the world please?
My development ecodustbin is Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) / VS2010 / Expression Studio all patched up to date including the Windows 7 SP1 which I applied first thing this morning (not a quick job). As I said the test server is just Windows Server Standard 2008
R2 with IIS7 (and also SQL Server 2008 R2).
I did try deploying to my external shared hosting platform just in case it was my test server configuration at fault, and the test application failed to work from there either.
Hopefully and probably this is just me not ticking a box or selecting something from a dropdown somewhere in VS2010 and when I sit down again tomorrow the answer will hit me like a wet fish. Here's hoping.
In the meantime, any comprehensive, clear, idiot-friendly instructions based on an actual working example would be great!

A new day, a new test app. As above, one ASP.Net web application by VS2010 template, one simple CE4 Db with one table with two fields (identity, string). One datagrid on the About page connected using SQLDataSource.
SQL CE dlls copied as instructed by your link above. Web.config changed as instructed in that link, but with System.Data.SqlServerCe version entry changed to 4.0.0.0 instead of v4.0.0.1.
Works fine on development machine, but when copied to server it results in this error message:

How to get JDev 10.1.2/ADF working with MS SQL Server Identity Column

Hello JDevTeam & JDevelopers,
I want to use JDev/ADF with a MS SQL Server 2005 database that contains tables employing IDENTITY Columns.
Using JDev/ADF and DBSequence with an Oracle database employing before triggers/sequences accomplishes what I am trying to do except I want to accomplish the same thing using a MSSQL Server 2005 database. Unfortunately I cannot change the database.
I have been able to select records but I am unable to insert records (due to my lack of knowledge) when using MS/SQL Server Identity Columns with JDev/ADF.
The following are the steps taken thus far.
Step1: Create table named test in the 2005 MSSQL Server (see script below).
Step2: Register 3rd Party JDBC Driver with JDeveloper; Using use Tools/Manage Libraries. Create a new entry in User Libraries with the following;
     Library Name     = Ms2005Jdbc
     Class Path     = C:\dev\Ms2005Jdbc\sqljdbc_1.0\enu\sqljdbc.jar
     (note: Latest TYPE 4 JDBC driver for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - free at http://msdn.microsoft.com/data/ref/jdbc/)
Step3:Create New Database Connection;
     Connection Name = testconn1
     Type = Third Party JDBC Driver
     Authentication Username = sa, Password = password, Check Deploy Password
     Connection
          Driver Class = com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver
          Library = Ms2005Jdbc
          Classpath = C:\dev\Ms2005Jdbc\sqljdbc_1.0\enu
          URL = jdbc:sqlserver://192.168.1.151:1433;instanceName=sqlexpress;databaseName=test
     Test Connection = Success!
Step5: Create a new application workspace using Web Application default template
Step6: In Model project, Create new Business Components Diagram.
Step7: Create new Entity Object. Goto to connections/testconn1, open tables and drag table test onto the diagram.
Step8: Generate Default Data Model Components by right-clicking on Entity Object. Except all the defaults.
When I test the Appmodule I select the view object and can scroll through all the records without error. If I try to insert a record, I get JBO-27014: Attribute testid in test is required.
Going back to the EntityObject I deselect the Mandatory attribute and re-run the test. Now when I try to insert it accepts the value for testname but it does not update the PK testid like it would using an "JDev/ADF/DBSequence/Oracle database/before trigger/sequence" solution.
Going back to the EntityObject and selecting refresh on insert does not solve this problem either. Changing the URL connection string and adding "SelectMethod=cursor" did not help and changing the SQl Flavor to SQLServer produced errors in the Business Components Browser. I've tried overriding isAttributeChanged() and other things as well.
I am totally stuck! Can anyone provide a solution?

Figured it out!
When using the MS SQL Server 2000 Database with the MS JDBC 2000 Driver you specify the SQL Flavor to SQLServer. However setting the SQL Flavor to SQLServer with MS SQL Server 2005 Database and the MS JDBC 2005 Driver will *** fail ***.
When working with the MS SQL Server 2005 Database and the MS JDBC 2005 Driver you set the SQL Flavor to SQL92 and the Type Map to Java.
If using a named instance like I am you would specify the URL = jdbc:sqlserver://<db host ip address>:<listening port>;instanceName=<your instance name>;selectMethod=cursor;databaseName=<your database name> (note: leave out the < >)
The 2005 Driver Class is different then the 2000 and is specified as com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver
Note: In a default MS SQL Server 2005 installation the listening port will change *** everytime *** the host is restarted! You can override this though.
For the primary key you need to deselect the Mandatory attribute in the EntityObject editor.
Set Refresh on insert/update = no.
Set Updateable = never.
Now my Primary Keys which get their values from the Identity Column are working with ADF in a predictable way.
Simple enough but I have been away from this stuff for awhile.

We are trying to add a SQL Server Reporting Services Report Viewer and when we click add we get the following error message
The file you imported is not valid. Verify that the file is a Web Part description file (*.webpart or *.dwp) and that it contains well-formed XML.

The Report Viewer Web Part is a custom Web Part that is installed by the Reporting Services Add-in for SharePoint Products and associated with report definition (.rdl) files that are processed by a Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services report
server.
To install the Web Part, you must run Setup for the Reporting Services Add-in. You should not install or uninstall the Web Part independently. It is part of the add-in and can only be installed through the add-in setup package. The Report Viewer Web Part
file name is ReportViewer.dwp. It is located in the Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\15\template\features\reportserver folder and should not be moved to other folders.
To use the Web Part, you must have installed and configured the Reporting Services Add-in and configured the report server for SharePoint integration.

Before you run SQL Server 2008 express setup, make sure that you have installed Windows installer 4.5 and.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 manually. For more information about the process, please refer to the article:

Secondly, please check if "msdbdata.mdf" file exists at d:\8268cd7b247d294de359c9\x86\setup\sql_engine_core_inst_msi\PFiles\SqlServr\MSSQL.X\MSSQL\Binn\Template. If it exists, please make sure that your account has read permission to the extracted
folder.
However, if the file doesn't exist in the extraction, the media could be corrupt. Please download the
media
again and check if the issue still occurs.

If your organization runs databases such as Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle DB, you probably know that these vendors primarily license their products on a "per-core" basis. Microsoft recently switched to "per-core" rather than "per-socket" licensing for SQL Server 2012 and 2014. This change can have a big impact on the total cost of operating a database, especially as core counts on new servers continue to climb. It turns out that the right storage infrastructure can drive down database costs, increase productivity, and put your infrastructure back in balance.
In many customer environments, NetApp has noticed that server CPU utilization is low—often on the order of just 20%. This is usually the result of I/O bottlenecks. Server cores have to sit and wait for I/O from hard disk drives (HDDs). We've been closely studying the impact of all-flash storage on SQL Server environments that use HDD-based storage systems. NetApp® All Flash FAS platform delivers world-class performance for SQL Server plus the storage efficiency, application integration, nondisruptive operations, and data protection of clustered Data ONTAP®, making it ideal for SQL Server environments.
Tests show that All Flash FAS can drive up IOPS and database server CPU utilization by as much as 4x. And with a 95% reduction in latency, you can achieve this level of performance with half as many servers. This reduces the number of servers you need and the number of cores you have to license, driving down costs by 50% or more and paying back your investment in flash in as little as six months.

End of Support for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 is Rapidly Approaching
Microsoft has set the end of extended support for SQL Server 2005 for April 2016—less than a year away. With support for Microsoft Windows 2003 ending in July 2015, time may already be running short.
If you're running Windows Server 2003, new server hardware is almost certainly needed when you upgrade SQL Server. Evaluate your server and storage options now to get costs under control.
Test Methodology
To test the impact of flash on SQL Server performance, we replaced a legacy HDD-based storage system with an All Flash FAS AFF8080 EX. The legacy system was configured with almost 150 HDDs, a typical configuration for HDD storage supporting SQL Server. The AFF8080 EX used just 48 SSDs.

The test configuration consisted of 10 database servers connected through fibre channel to both the legacy storage system and the AFF8080 EX. Each of the 10 servers ran SQL Server 2014 Enterprise Edition.
The publicly available HammerDB workload generator was used to drive an OLTP-like workload simultaneously from each of the 10 database servers to storage. We first directed the workload to the legacy storage array to establish a baseline, increasing the load to the point where read latency consistently exceeded 20ms.
That workload was then directed at the AFF8080 EX. The change in storage resulted in an overall 20x reduction in read latency, a greater than 4x improvement in IOPS, and a greater than 4x improvement in database server CPU utilization.

In other words, the database servers are able to process four times as many IOPS with dramatically lower latency. CPU utilization goes up accordingly because the servers are processing 4x the work per unit time.
The All Flash FAS system still had additional headroom under this load.
Calculating the Savings
Let's look at what this performance improvement means for the total cost of running SQL Server 2014 over a 3-year period. To do the analysis we used NetApp Realize, a storage modeling and financial analysis tool designed to help quantify the value of NetApp solutions and products. NetApp sales teams and partners use this tool to assist with return on investment (ROI) calculations.
The calculation includes the cost of the AFF8080 EX, eliminates the costs associated with the existing storage system, and cuts the total number of database servers from 10 to five. This reduces SQL Server licensing costs by 50%. The same workload was run with five servers and achieved the same results. ROI analysis is summarized in Table 2.

The takeaway here is that you can replace your existing storage with All Flash FAS and get a big performance bump while substantially reducing your costs, with the majority of the savings derived from the reduction in SQL Server licensing costs.

Maximum SQL Server 2014 Performance
In addition to the ROI analysis, we also measured the maximum performance of the AFF8080 EX with SQL Server 2014. A load-generation tool was used to simulate an industry-standard TPC-E OLTP workload against an SQL Server 2014 test configuration.
A two-node AFF8080 EX achieved a maximum throughput of 322K IOPS at just over 1ms latency. For all points other than the maximum load point, latency was consistently under 1ms and remained under 0.8ms up to 180K IOPS.
Data Reduction and Storage Efficiency
In addition to performance testing, we looked at the overall storage efficiency savings of our SQL Server database implementation. The degree of compression that can be achieved is dependent on the actual data that is written and stored in the database. For this environment, inline compression was effective. Deduplication, as is often the case in database environments, provided little additional storage savings and was not enabled.
For the test data used in the maximum performance test, we measured a compression ratio of 1.5:1. We also tested inline compression on a production SQL Server 2014 data set to further validate these results and saw a 1.8:1 compression ratio.
Space-efficient NetApp Snapshot® copies provide additional storage efficiency benefits for database environments. Unlike snapshot methods that use copy-on-write, there is no performance penalty; unlike full mirror copies, NetApp Snapshot copies use storage space sparingly. Snapshot copies only consume a small amount of storage space for metadata and additional incremental space is consumed as block-level changes occur. In a typical real-world SQL Server deployment on NetApp storage, database volume Snapshot copies are made every two hours.
First introduced more than 10 years ago, NetApp FlexClone® technology also plays an important role in SQL Server environments. Clones are fully writable, and, similar to Snapshot copies, only consume incremental storage capacity. With FlexClone, you can create as many copies of production data as you need for development and test, reporting, and so on. Cloning is a great way to support the development and test work needed when upgrading from an earlier version of SQL Server. You'll sometimes see these types of capabilities referred to as "copy data management."
A Better Way to Run Enterprise Applications
The performance benefits that all-flash storage can deliver for database environments are significant: more IOPS, lower latency, and an end to near-constant performance tuning.
