SQL Server with Oracle

Hello All,
I am trying to invoke the SQL Server database from Oracle for which I have done the following:
1) Created DSN for SQL Server database
2) Created the init<DSN Name>.ora file under <oracle home>\database as follows:
HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO = sharepoint
HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL = OFF
3) Created a listener entry as follows:
sharepoint =
+(ADDRESS_LIST=+
+(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=localhost)(PORT=1522))+
+(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=ipc)(KEY=PNPKEY)))+
SID_LIST_sharepoint=
+(SID_LIST=+
+(SID_DESC=+
+(SID_NAME=sharepoint)+
+(ORACLE_HOME = <path>)+
+(PROGRAM=hsodbc)+
+)+
+)+
4) Added a new TNS entry in tnsnames.ora file as follows:
sharepoint =
+(DESCRIPTION=+
+(ADDRESS=+
+(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=localhost)(PORT=1522))+
+(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=sharepoint)))(HS=OK)+
I have created a DBLink in Oracle database using the new tns name.
When I try to access a table using DBLink in Sql plus / Toad I am getting the following error:
ORA-02068: Following severe error from sharepoint
ORA-03135: connection lost contact.
I have confirmed whether the listener is up and also I got OK result using tnsping.
My windows firewall is off (as of now) and also I have no entry to timeout in SQLNET.ORA file.
Am I missing something here.
Please help me out.
Regards,
Anoop

I can only comment on the SQLSever gateways I had to install recently, maybe some of these notes will jog your memory.
Assuming you have installed the gateway on the SQLServer server with just the defaults.
I notice your pfile is called init{DSN}.ora. I named mine initdg4msql{SQLSvrDBname}.ora
The FDS info line was: HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO={servername}//{SQLSvrDBName}
( This assumes the default SQLServer TCP port is being used, else syntax is different. )
The gateway listener.ora config for mine was:
LISTENER =
(DESCRIPTION_LIST =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1800))
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = serverhostname )(PORT = 1800))
SID_LIST_LISTENER=
(SID_LIST=
(SID_DESC=
(SID_NAME=dg4msql{SQLSvrDBName})
(ORACLE_HOME=D:\oracle\product\11.1.0\tg_1)
(PROGRAM=dg4msql)

  • Need advice, sql server with asp or oracle with asp

    hi !
    i have been given a task to improve the design of a sql server database with more than 1 million records, front end is asp (code has to be written also, keeping user interface same). I would like to use oracle with asp, is it practical or should i go for sql server. i need your advice.
    thanks in advance
    lavinder

    Depends on your definition of "practical".
    My guess is that most of the work will be porting your back-end code from SQL*Server to Oracle. The Migration Workbench can help here, but there are often things that you do in SQL*Server code that you really don't want to do in Oracle code (i.e. frequent commits).
    There is a good chance that you'd be able to improve the scalability of the application faster by fixing the problems that exist in the SQL*Server implementation. I think Oracle is inherently a much more scalable platform than SQL*Server, however, so I'm not trying to dissuade you from moving. It really depends on the end state you need to achieve and the amount of time & effort you're willing to put forward.

  • How to migrate an existing Microsoft SSIS deployment if it is decided to replace SQL Server with an Oracle database?

    Hi Oracle Gurus!
    Currently, I am designing an ETL solution that transforms and loads a lot of data from flat files and sends it to an SQL Server 2008 R2 database for storage. However, at a future point of time, it may be decided to add or even replace SQL Server with an Oracle 11g database.
    Currently, I am writing script transforms in C# to dynamically generate SSIS packages to tansform and load the data into SQL Server. But considering that in future, an Oracle 11g or 12c database might be added to, or replace the SQL Server database, how do I make my script transforms (or whatever else I am developing currently for SQL Server) reusable to the extent possible?
    Or more precisely, what steps do I take, from an Oracle point of view, to ensure that any future migration of data to an Oracle database would be smooth to the extent possible?
    Looking up to my Oracle Gurus for enlightenment in this matter!
    Novice Kid

    When you're writing your on C# code to load data into the SQL Server you have to modify the routines so that they will work with Oracle.
    One approach is to use the extproc agent which would allow you to directly call external programs with all the logic in it to perform the load of your files and to put the data into the Oracle database. Another option would be to use utl_file package (or equivalents) which will allow you to open external files from your Oracle database and to directly read its content and then to pass it to the related tables.

    Depending on the version of the database you have, you could use transportable tablespaces.

  • Entity Framework - Code First - Migration - How to access SQL Server and Oracle using the same context?

    Hello,
    I use Entity Framework code first approach.
    My project is working fine with SQL Server. But, I want to access Oracle too. I want to switch SQL Server and Oracle in run time.
    I am able to access Oracle using "Oracle.ManagedDataAccess.EntityFramework.dl" in a new project.
    But, Is this possible to access SQL Server and Oracle in the same project.
    Thanks,
    Murugan

    This should be possible with a Code-First workflow.  In Code-First the database mapping layer is generated at runtime.

    Oracle is another machine
    When i connect sqlfire with oracle using DBsynchronizer It shows the error message as Wan is not supported for default license
    When i connect Sqlfie(my system) with oracle( another system) using JDBC Rowloader .nothing is happening after some time it shows the error like"time out for pool connection to archive database.When i increase the time out also nothing is happening.
    what is the reason for above two errors(I stated in the pragraph.)
    is it beacuse of wan netwrok not supported by default evaluation license?
    could you please explain?

    I don't think this has anything to do with a VMware product.

  • Related to migration of db from sql server to oracle 11 g

    We're trying to migrate a Sql server managment studio database to Oracle 11g using SQL Developer 4.0. We can successfully connect to both Sql server managment studion 8.0 and Oracle 11g using the tool, as well as click through the Migration Wizard and start the migration.
    This opens the Database Migration dialog box, which indicates the capture process starts normally. we get the following error:
    ora :01440 : can not insert null into migrlog (id column) ,
    \and then after some time , i get an error that migration failed
    i am not getting the reason,I thing it may be due to reason that , I have table's column in my source db with more than 30 character.
    If i am migrating one by one table . then it is not giving any error, and identifier name is getting shrink in 30 character. but i am not getting the view , stored procedure , indexes , and others
    then what is the solution  for that, somebody pls suggest any help?????????????

    Pl do not post duplicates - related to migration of db from sql server to oracle 11 g
    Continue the discussion in your original thread
    The error message is explicitly clear
    ora :01440 : can not insert null into migrlog (id column)
    Your process is trying to insert a NULL value into the ID column, which presumably cannot be NULL

  • CONVERT function in SQL Server to oracle

    All,
    How to convert CONVERT function in SQL Server to oracle, below mentioned format is in SQL Server:
    variable1 = convert(numeric(20), SUBSTRING( parameter1,parameter2,parameter3)
    parameter1 datatype nvarchar2(100)
    parameter2 datatype bigint
    parameter3 datatype bigint
    I did bit R&D, but was not successful..but still getting on..
    If any help that would be great...
    Regards,
    ~ORA

    You cannot specify the precision/scale or length of input paramters to a stored procedure in Oracle, or at least the pl/sql engine does not respect the sizing. Assuming that you want to do something with variable1 in the procedure, and not just return it, the Oracle equivalent would be something along the lines of:
    SQL> CREATE FUNCTION f (p_param1 IN VARCHAR2,
      2                     p_param2 IN NUMBER,
      3                     p_param3 IN NUMBER) RETURN NUMBER IS
      4     l_var1 NUMBER(20) := SUBSTR(p_param1, p_param2, p_param3);
      5  BEGIN
      6     RETURN l_var1 * 10;
      7  END;
      8  /
    Function created.
    SQL> SELECT f('ABC10DEF', 4, 2) FROM dual;
    F('ABC10DEF',4,2)
                  100You may need to adjust the return type to match what you are actually returning.
    You can also use this iin a direct assignment in pl/sql without doig a select, something like:
    SQL> DECLARE
      2     l_num NUMBER(20);
      3  BEGIN
      4     l_num := f('ABC10DEF', 4, 2);
      5     DBMS_OUTPUT.Put_Line('The number is: '||l_num);
      6  END;
      7  /
    The number is: 100John

  • Migration from SQL server to Oracle

    Hi,
    Has anybody done migration from the SQL server to Oracle? If so, what manual method do you recommend? I'm a new college grad and I would like to get your expertise, if you have done this in the past.
    Thanks in advance!
    Sho

    It is some time back, so I do not remember the specifics. Oracle gives Oracle Migration Workbench for free. You can use it to convert all SQL tables and procedures etc to oracle. It is not that difficult. If there are no stored procedures etc, you can just extract the DDL and create the tables with minor changes to the script. You might need bcp-sqlloader/trasparent gateway etc copy the data.

    I would like to ask how to use SQL developer MWB to migration SQL Server to Oracle?
    I have go through the doc(s) like: getting start, user's guild, etc. and have following problems
    (1), where should the SQL developer installed? in SQL Server side? Oracle side? or any PC with connection to the databases?
    (2), do I need to get some plug-in(s) for MWB to work? If yes, which plug-in do I need and where are they?
    Thank you very much.

    Hi Chocobo,
    I put together a Quick Guide myself
