Standby database on different RedHat version
Hi,
Our Oracle 9.2.0.1 production database is running on a RedHat AS2.1. We would like to have a Standby database but the sysadmin already installed the server with RedHat ES4.0
Both platform have to be the same, but is there a chance it might work ?
Thanks
Luc
Even if it works, the consequences would be unknown. It is not suggested that such be done and therefore I suggest you do not either.

Primary and Standby Database on different versions
Dear Friends,
We have a situation now where we have successfully completed the oracle upgrade of primary database to 10.2.0.4
but could not proceed further with the physical standby database.
Can we have standby database in its current version (9.2.0.8) and its primary database on (10.2.0.4)
and will it apply the logs shipped from primary without any issues ?
Appreciate your earliest valuable responses.
Best Regards,
Viswanathan Subramanian> Can we have standby database in its current version (9.2.0.8) and its primary database on (10.2.0.4)
No, this is not supported.

sorry to say that we are in desupported version due to some constraint.

I need to create physical standby database with different directory structure:
i have created standby database with same directory structure of primary, now i have requirement to create with different directory structure.
in oracle 8i we can not give multiple parameter for db_file_name_convert(ORA-01678: parameter db_file_name_convert must be two strings, a pattern and a replacement) and i do have partitions in primary as follows:

Standby database on different version than prod.
Is it possible to have a standby database running on a different version of Oracle than the production database?
In this case I have production DB on the following version:
7.3.4
8.1.7.4.0
9.2.0.4.0
9.2.0.6.0
Would it be possible to run the a stand by DB in 10g?From the docs posted previously, which you clearly didn't read
Oracle Data Guard is available only as a feature of Oracle Database Enterprise Edition. It is not available with Oracle Database Standard Edition. This means the same release of Oracle Database Enterprise Edition must be installed on the primary database and all standby databases in a Data Guard configuration.
Rhetorical question: Now what would same release mean?

Can i create a standby database for this db in an AIX 6.1 machine?i have done it and it is possible as long as between to machine has the same operating system (different OS version is still possible), however to avoid hardware issue in the future it is recommended to use the same hardware spesification if possible.

Standby database with different os
Hi,
can anyone help me,
if i want build standby database,
my primary database using Oracle on Sun Solaris v880,
can i use intel based linux or intel based solaris as standby
database (hardware cheaper than sun unix) ?
if can how to configure or install hardware and software.
or maybe you can recomend me hw/software, because i have tight
budget for backup server.
thank you
richardHi buddy,
I would like to mention two points to you.
1) Oracle and ideal standby database concepts suggest to have
same hardware and operating system (including patch).
2) You may use your own same hardware machine on which primary
database running, for your standby database, provided Oracle
instance names are different. You may not need another system to
buy.
I hope this helps you......my friend.. -
Oracle standby database creation different backup location
Hi,
I am using Oracle EE 11gR2 on aix 6.2.I am tring to create a standby database.The directory structure od primary and standby database server are different.
I am taking backup (RMAN) at /u01/backup directory on primary server and shipping those backup to standby server at /u05/backup.While duplication the rman unable to locate backup pieces at Dr server as those backups are located on different location from Dc.How to over come this situation.catalog start with is not working.
Regards
DBAFORUHello;
Since you are on Oracle 11 one option would be duplicate from active primary. You can use the Standby parameters of DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT for the directory structure.

Hello Folks,
DB Version : 10.2.0.4
OS : Solaris 5.8
I am planning to configure 2nd standby database (Physical ) for one of the my production database.
Right now it's configured with 1 physical standby database. If any one has previous experience or any document link please update the forum.
Thanks for your time.primary database parameter
*.fal_client=' '
*.fal_server=' '
standby database 1
*.fal_client='stby1'
*.fal_server='primary'
standby 2 parameter
*.fal_client='stby2'
*.fal_server='stby1','primary'
more that that we have to set log_archive_dest_n parameters correctly
and db_file_name_convert and log_file_name_convert parameters , if it is needed.
configuring listener.ora and tnsnames.ora files ....
i plan to post a documentation of creating and adding physical and logical standby databases in different hosts..
please wait this month end , i plan to post it in my blog

Creating physical standby database from another physical standby database
hi,
We have one production database and one physical standby of the production. Now we have situation where we need to create one database from either production or from standby. As production is loaded we can not do it using active database option. Now we have the only option to copy the database from standby.
As of now we open the standby and copy it using rman duplicate database and again we put it back to standby mode.
Is it possible to create standby database from standby database only?
Oracle version : 11.1.0.7.0
I have seen procedure allowing to do the same in version 11.2.0.3. I have tried searching for the difference but didn't find when this feature was introduced.
Thanks,
Ketul PatelHello;
Active duplicate should work when connected to Standby as source Database. However there's a bug 11715084 which is not fixed until version 11.2.0.4.
If patch 11715084 is available for your version it may work, but all the 11.1.0 are gone so I have no way to test.

Standby database in same computer
I have made standby database in different computer then in production database in similar path and it is working.
But whenever I try to make it in same computer it gives me error. I have gone through the oracle documentaion.
But still I can't.
Any suggestion on NodeI still get the problem.
I have created a prod database with archive log mode and archival enabled
I shut down it and copyed the
"oradata/prod to oradata/stdby",
"admin/prod to admin/stdby",
"initprod.ora to initstdby.ora" and
"pwdprod.ora to pwdstdby.ora"
Then I have added a service name "stdby" with net8 easy config
Now I have created a new instance stdby with "oradim -new -sid stdby"
now In "Prod init.ora" file I have added
log_archive_start = true
log_archive_dest_1 = "location=e:\Oracle\oradata\stdby\archive"
log_archive_dest_state_1 = ENABLE
log_archive_dest_2 = 'SERVICE=standby1'
log_archive_dest_state_2 = ENABLE
global_names = false
Now I have started the prod database and created a standby controlfile
alter database create standby controlfile '\oradata\stdby\stdby.ctl'
now In "Stdby init.ora" file I have added
db_name = "prod"
instance_name = stdby
service_names = stdby
control_files = ("e:\Oracle\oradata\stdby\stdby.ctl")
log_archive_start = true
log_archive_dest_1 = "location=e:\Oracle\oradata\stdby\archive"
log_archive_dest_state_1 = ENABLE
standby_archive_dest = 'e:\Oracle\oradata\stdby\'
db_file_name_convert = ('\prod\','\stdby\')
log_file_name_convert = ('\prod\','\stdby\')
lock_name_space = 'stdby'
Now IN standby when I do
SQL_stdby>>startup nomount pfile='E:\Oracle\Oracle8i\DATABASE\initstdby.ora';
SQL_stdby>>alter database mount standby database;
SQL_stdby>>RECOVER AUTOMATIC STANDBY DATABASE;
Up to this it works
Now when I start prod database
SQL_prod>>startup
it gives me the error
ORA-01102: cannot mount database in EXCLUSIVE mode -

Yes satish, i know. :)
I know we can check alert log to ensure if the archive logfile was registered. Just grep for PHYSICAL or the specific sequence number and see for ALTER DATABASE PHYSCIAL command.
grep PHYSICAL alert_$ORACLE_SID.log
grep <sequence> alert_$ORACLE_SID.log
Regards,
Nagendra ChillaleIf you already knew this view was not available in 9i and that the method for finding out unregistered logs is through alert log, I don't see why you created this thread. -
10g dataguard - physical standby database
Hi Guys,
DB1 <Primary> - Production
DB2 <Physial Standby> - DR
I will need to startup my DB2 in DR segment for testing.
If i perform the below, will it affect my Production DB? I need it to be up and running as well.
DR:
recover managed standby database cancel;
shutdown immediate;
startup nomount;
alter database mount standby database;
recover standby database until cancel;
alter database activate standby database;
thanksHi,
In 10g version, you can open database database with READ ONLY mode. In that case standby database
recieve primary generated changes but not apply .
I see you steps you using ALTER DATABASE ACTIVATE STANDBY DATABASE statement for activating database
Activate the standby database using the SQL ALTER DATABASE ACTIVATE STANDBY DATABASE statement. This converts the standby database to a primary database, creates a new reset logs branch, and opens the database.*
If you are not need convert standby database to primary database then , you must use only
ALTER DATABASE OPEN READ ONLY;

Need advice regarding physical standby databases in rac environment on orac
need advice regarding physical standby databases in rac environment on oracle 10G r2
I like to have have a Primary ( 10 node RAC cluster ) shipping to a physical standby ( 3 node RAC cluster ) shipping using LGWR .
So I have a lot of questions
1) What will be the performance overhead on the Primay if we are using LGWR SYNC option .
2) Does the overhead depends on the physical distance between primary & physical
3)Do you recommend a seperate private network for shipping logs between primary and standby.
4) I know that DGMGRL supports RAC only from 10g. So are there any know issues are bugs using DGMGRL is RAC environments.
Thanks in advance
-SatishGenerally you should have same CPU architecture and same operating system but it's not mandatory to have the exactly the same CPU model, the same number of CPU, the same RAM size etc.
Actually starting with 11.1 you don't need to have the same hardware setup: it 's even possible to have primary and standby database on different platforms: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28294/standby.htm#i72053. -
Can I have a primary database and standby database with a different windows version?
Hi
I need your help.
We need to increase the memory in the server where is the standby database , but first, we need to upgrade the windows version.
The actual version is windows 2003 standard edition 64 bits
The new version will be windows 2003 enterprise edition 64 bits
This difference in windows version between primary and standby servers can cause a problem in the synchronization between primary and standby databases ??
What do you recommend? Have both servers in the same windows version?
The databases are in SQL SERVER 2005.
Thanks.
LoreinnThis difference in windows version between primary and standby servers can cause a problem in the synchronization between primary
and standby databases ??<o:p></o:p>
There is no issue with database synchronization as long as SQL Server is of same version.<o:p></o:p>
What do you recommend? Have both servers in the same windows version?<o:p></o:p>
OS(Windows version) has no restriction for using SQL server 2005 database mirroring/log shipping. You can go with upgrade without any worries on SQL
database side.<o:p></o:p>
