Start up times vary - why?  (MBP 10.8.3 with two drives)

I have a new MBP with 10.8.3 and two drives, an SSD and an internal.
Just curious as to why I get two varied startup times.
1.  press startup button and within 3 seconds I hear the chime and the screen lights up.
2.  press startup button and within about 12 seconds I hear the chime and the screen lights up.
Any thoughts as to why?

1 and 2 are both the same.  I'm assuming I am starting up from the SSD drive because that is where all my applications are.  The internal drive is just for storage.

  • Why did I wind up with two identities after transfer of files by Migration Assistant? How can I fix that?

At first I could not find my files after Migration Assistant completed a 45 hours transfer of files from my Macbook to my new iMac.  Then I realized that I had two identities on my new iMac.  What is the best way to correct this?  Do I have to start over and wait another 2 days for the migration?

I originally wanted to reinstall my info from the MacBook using Time Machine.  The iMac would not recognize the backups on my external hard drive.
I decided to use Migration Assistant to move from my MacBook to my new iMac.  After migration I tried to backup (bu) with Time Machine using the external disk I used for the MacBook.  The Time Machine said the bu (over 450 Gb) was too large for the disk.  I found this odd.  There seemed to be a much higher amount of data on my iMac than existed on my MacBook.  I bought a new 2Tb external.  I originally hooked it up to my Airport Extreme with a USB cable.  Time Machine said the bu would take over 36 hours.  This seemed rediculous.  I hooked up through USB directly to the iMac.  It said the bu would take over 18 hours.  Still rediculous.
After looking through things I discovered that Migration Assistant actually double copied all the data from my MacBook to my iMac.  There were two copies of every folder.  I deleted all the copies.  Now I am trying to deal with my sons old ID and getting Time machine to work properly. It appears there were some disk permission issues.  That my also relate to my sons ID.  I cannot find his ID anywhere on the iMac but App Store keeps asking my to log on using his ID.

  • Time Machine is great but "how to" with multiple drives?

I like time machine, but like to use it to back up 3 or 4 different internal drives to 3 or 4 dedicated external drives of equal size. For example: 250Gb MAC main drive to an external HD 250Gb in size, Video drive 1Tb in size (used for HD video editing) to a 1Tb external drive and a 750Gb Media drive to a 750 external drive. I would like to keep them all separate if possible but open to better ideas.
What I do now, is use a Lacie drive and backup software to BU the main drive once in a while. Timemachine backups the rest except Aperture library (done by Aperture Vaults) and Video drive (which will shortly have its own backup drive).

Sounds like you'd be better off using something like SuperDuper, especially for your video drive which likely sees frequent changes. It also seems like all you need to do is clone your media drive rather than keep revisions. IMO your backup drive for your main drive is a little small. A general rule of thumb that I have seen is that you use a hard drive with at least twice the capacity of your drive to be backed up. That way you would be able to keep a relatively large archive of old backups.
    Hope this helps.

  • Time Machine Restore - User Profile and System on two drives

    Hello,
I need some help and I think here's the best place to get it.  I need to do a restore from Time Machine to a new system.
My old (2008) Mac Pro as "died" and after having the nice people at the Mac Store look at it, I realized that it would be cheaper to buy a used system than to repair mine.  My CPUs are dead (2000$ to get them replaced) and one of my Raid 0 drive is dead too.
    Old system:
2008 Mac Pro 2.8 ghz (with Raid Card)
Drive 1:  OCZ  (SSD drive) ---> System
Drive 2:  Raid 0 (wiht Apple Raid card) ---> User profile
    New system:
2008 Mac Pro 3.2 ghz (NO raid card)
Drive 1: OCZ (Same from previous)
Drive 2: 500 Gb (which came with the new system)
Now I have done the Time Machine already but it only brought me back to the same point.   I have renamed the Drive 2 in the "new" system to "Raid 0" as it was the name it had in the previous system and it allowed me to logging to the system but I do not have any of my data on it.
How could I restore my User Profile to Drive 2 on the New system ?
    Hopefully this isn't too confusing.
    Thanks for all the help.
    Richard

The "full restore" from Time Machine is only for OSX drives.
For data-only drives, use the Time Machine browser (the "Star Wars" display).  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #15.

  • Why an I losing contact with Firewire drives and camera back?

One of my computers suddenly won't connect to a Phase One digital back via firewire.
Tried to plug in a external drive to check the port. No contact. (Tried various cables, etc.)
Tried camera on another computer. No contact. Tried firewire drives that had been running before on this same computer, and now it won't read these drives.
My PhaseOne dealer assures me that a digital back can't possible fry or disable a port. Still. there they are.
Took one of these drives to yet another computer that connects fine with yet another drive, tried the problem drive, and there was no connection. When I checked About This Mac there was a spinning wheel, as though it were looking for something.
Any thoughts, anyone? I don't want to test more drives if they are being damaged. And if they are, can they be recovered?
    Many thanks
    Sean Kernan

    Hi, John.
    1. I presume in Finder Preferences, in the General tab, you've selected "CDs, DVDs, and iPods" under "Show on desktop." Otherwise, FireWire drives won't display on the desktop, but they should still appear in the Finder's Sidebar.
    2. If you did not Eject the drive before you disconnected it or powered it off, its partition map may be corrupted. That could explain the symptoms you are seeing. Your FireWire-based digital camera back may be seen as a FireWire drive.
Disconnecting a removable storage device — FireWire drive, USB drive, etc. — without first ejecting it can result in the drive's partition map being corrupted. Before disconnecting such a device, one must first Eject it by either:
    - Dragging its icon to the Trash.
    - Control-clicking the drive's icon and selecting Eject from its contextual menu.
    - In Disk Utility, selecting the device, then selecting Eject in the Disk Utility toolbar.
If there's data on the drive you wish to recover, see my "Data Recovery" FAQ. Once you recover the data you want to save, if any, you will need to repartition and reformat the drive.
    3. Before you panic w.r.t. item 2 above, Here is some general troubleshooting advice w.r.t. FireWire devices that may help:(1) Review the AppleCare Knowledge Base document "What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire device".
    (2) If this problem occurred after installing a recent Mac OS X Update, and you are also unable to mount CDs, DVDs, or disk images perform the steps in this Mac OS X Hints article.
    (3) The following additional steps will often help resolve problems with FireWire devices, particularly hard drives:(a) Power-on the FireWire drive before starting up (booting) your Mac.
    (b) Reset PRAM and NVRAM.
    (c) Reset the PMU or SMU: Select the appropriate knowledge base item for your model of Mac from this KB search. Follow the instructions on resetting the PMU or SMU carefully!
    (d) Try a different FireWire port. James Wiebe, CEO of WiebeTech, has published FireWire Port Failures in Host Computers and Peripheral Devices, a white paper providing backgroud information and technical analysis concerning the causes of failure for FireWire ports. This may provide additional diagnostic information.
    (e) Check with the manufacturer of your FireWire drive or enclosure to see if any firware updates are available for such.(4) Hopefully, the partition map on the FireWire drive is not damaged. If it still refuses to mount, you may need to employ data recovery tools or services: see my "Data Recovery" FAQ.Note that some of the information above is from the "FireWire Problems" chapter of my book, Troubleshooting Mac® OS X.
PS: You've not provided any info about the computer in question, i.e. Mac model, installed RAM, installed version of Mac OS X, etc. That's always important to include in a post, and I suggest you add it to your profile: click "My Settings" in the upper-right section of the sidebar on the right side of this page.

  • Start Up Time, slowing down and Verify Disk Permissions?

Hey All, today since i was curious and i havent done it in a while, i timed my macbook start up time. It was clocked at 42 seconds, which is slower than what it used to be. Can you tell me your start up time? Also im a little inexperienced with Apple Computers i would like to know why its slowing down. Since it slowed down, i went to Verify Disk Permissions to see if maybe something was wrong and this showed up http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/JoshSG/Picture1-2.png again, i repaired the permissions about a month ago and i guess it didnt clear up. Does that have anything to do with the start up time and any way to actually clear those permissions up?
    Thanks
I hope it is not confusing

I am having the exact same problem- be curious to see if anyone has an answer. I think my problem may be related to time machine- if I unplug the firewire this doesn't seem to happen- not sure the 2 are connected. Do you use time machine via a firewire?

  • Why can't I communicate with both of my GPIB devices?

I have 1 NI PCI GPIB board in my computer
I have 2 identical devices (keithley 237) connected one at address 15 one at address 16
and 2 different programs one program to connect with 15 and 1 to connect with 16
after I tell the 1st labview program to communicate with 15 then I tell the 2nd labview program to communicate with 16. then both communications come back with error device timeout. one at a time, I can communicate find with either device.
Why can't I communicate with two different GPIB devices at the same time?

    Hi mrutter,
first I would try some other addresses, e.g. 5 and 11. 15, 16 could be
a special address used by the controller.
Are there any other devices on the GPIB? If so then there could be
another instrument with the same ID. Do both (or all) devices show in
MAX, and can you communicate with them in MAX (e.g. query a *IDN? )
And are you sure that you *have* setup the correct addresses in the
Keithley instruments (look in the manuals if you don't know how to
change their addresses)? Some Keithley instrument are in local mode by
default, and you must explicitely set them in GPIB mode.
Sometimes, GPIB message termination can be an issue (although both the
GPIB cards and the instruments seem to get more tolerant of this).
Also, you must be very careful not to mix different versions of
LabView drivers and LabView version. I once had three different
LabView versions on a PC, it was terrible. We had to format the
harddisk and start afresh since we couldn't remove all of the older
    versions.
I first try all GPIB instruments in MAX. If all devices appear there,
and I can query commands in MAX, then I usually write my own LabView
drivers with the standard GPIB-read and -write VIs. I write them with
my oldest LabView version (say 5.1), then I am sure they will work
with all versions up to 7.1
Actually I once had a project where *no* GPIB instrument worked 100%.
We could never really find out what was the problem (it was probably a
    bad PC <-> Win98 <-> GPIB card <-> LabView 5.1 constellation).
    Good luck.

    Because something is wrong.
You will need to troubleshoot to find out what needs to be fixed.
One of these suggestions may resolve your trouble.
FaceTime (and other video) quality problems can be caused by problems at either end of the connection.  Unless your video callers' FaceTime connections work properly with everyone else but you, both parities to the video call should consider these possibilities.
    (1) Restart your iPad and test again. Sometimes a simple restart fixes things.
    (2) Use a fast broadband internet connection for best possible FaceTime video.
Broadband speed matters at BOTH ends, so you use something like http://speedtest.net/ to test both ends of your video connections.
Speeds less than 300 Kbps (up and down) at both ends are unlikely to give best results.
    (3) Try from a different wi-fi connection.
If the problem is ONLY at your current location, restarting your internet connection may help.  Shut down your iPad or turn Airplane Mode "on".  Then check your cable connections, restart your modem and wireless access point, reconnect iPad to the wi-fi, and test again.
If the problem remains but ONLY at your current location, there may be a problem with your internet service.  Contact your ISP for help.
    (4) Always use as much light as possible for best images (including video) from your iPad.

  • Random (mysterious) start-ups from shutdown on MBP 17" (Hi-Res)

    Hi,
lately, my MBP has started to turn itself on at night. I always shut it down completely after a days' work (NOT making it sleep or standby, also NOT closing the lid before the shutdown is done). Actually, I tried waiting 5-10 minutes before closing the lid after the shutdown just to make sure I wasn't interrupting anything.
Now, in the morning, my MBP sits there sleeping (the light on the front is in "breathing" mode), and after opening the lid it is completely booted up.
Syslog shows me it randomly started at some time in the night (between 1h and 5h hours after the shutdown.
Of course I made sure that I have not set a startup time in the power setting's scheduler.
What could be the reason for this?

My MBP 15in also mysteriously self-starts. I have determined that this occurs every evening at 7:00 pm sharp when the AC power is attached. This is despite the fact that I have no scheduled start-up time configured. I have yet to have it happen on battery. It has been happening regularly when nothing else is plugged in, not USB, FW, nothing. Sharing and remote management may be turned on or off as otherwise needed and have no noticed influence.

  • Issues with using SV Time-Varying Loudness.vi

    Hi,
I am rather new to Labview and am having issues getting my Time-Varying Loudness calcuations to come out correctly. Attached is my current VI and a .csv file of a set of my data (calibrated in Pa. Sample rate = 50kHz for 5 seconds). When i run the VI it does not output what I would expect. Here are my questions:
    Time-Varying Loudness:
    1) What are there so many signals? There are hundreds of lines, but I only expected one.
    2) Why is my x-axis not a range of 1 to 24 like Barks should be?
    1/3 Octave Band Analsysis:
    1) Why does it look incorrect? Their shouldnt be a linear increase as a function of frequency...
The data is of a part being squeezed and making a squeek. So it is a transient noise that happens around 2 seconds. Additionaly, how would I go about making a waterfall (Time(s),Frequency(Hz),Amplidtude(sones)) of this signal? Is there any easy way? or do I have to make all three signals and add them to make one plot?
Thank you for your help! Let me know if you need more infromation,

    Hi Troy,
    1) The SV Specific Loudness VI "chunks" data into 2 ms blocks, and then returns these as individual Specific Loudness vs. Sone plots.  The colored lines you are seeing on your graph are representative of the 2,500 2 ms time periods within your five-second acquisition.  Each of these plots contains 241 points, however they should occur in ten sample "steps", one for each sone.  The digital filter's buffer takes a bit to fill and kick in properly, however, so you may want to give your first few rows( 0-.02 seconds or so) a closer look before using them- you may see a number of unexpected zeroes around the lowest sones.
    2) Since you are using a chart, the x-axis will increment with every subsequent run (the previous data is retained.)  If you only want to display the most recent data, I would recommend switching to a graph, which can also be found in the graph controls palette.  Also, see above (#1) for why the x-axis is longer than 24 points.
    3) Remember that dB is a unitless measure, and can only be used in reference to another value. A typical reference for sound is 20 uPa, however you will likely need to equalize your input data and determine/set a dB reference.  You may want to take a look at SVL Scale voltage to EU.vi (EU stands for equalized units) and SVL Set dB reference.vi.  In your case, I believe the Octave plot is showing your dB relative to a default value of 1.  The values should be accurate with respect to one another, but you will need to provide a reference value to calibrate the scale.
    4) I think that this VI serves as a good example of how to go about creating a waterfall plot:
    Waterfall Display for Octave (DAQmx)
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/epd/p/id/5562
You will need to break up your waveform into chunks, much like the specific loudness VI, but the basic concept is roughly the same (take waveform chunk, take octave measurement of chunk, append octave measurement output cluster to array of clusters, repeat for remainder of waveform, display)
Phew!  That was quite a bit of information.  Let me know if that makes sense, and don't be intimidated by the detail and/or unfamiliar functions or methods  - you're definitely on the right track, or at the very least asking the right questions.

  • How to restore MBP with dual drives from time machine

Hi one and all. Hoping I can get some help here. My trusty mid 2010 i5 MBP's hdd died on me the other day, which isn't really the problem, as I've got two time machine back-ups. The issue is that in my wisdom I decided to swap out my old (and nearly full) 500 GB HDD with a 240 GB SSD (Crucial M500). I then loaded OSX 10.6.3 via the dvd that came with my MBP, formatting the SSD in the process. Then promptly removed the optical drive for a Samsung 1TB drive, formatted it and started transferring all my data over via the migration assistant.
I put everything other than photos, movies and some documents on the SSD, with the space hungry images, movies and docs going on the HDD. Now I'm assuming that because my boot drive (the SSD) is smaller than the time machine back-up (about 480 GB), this was the only way to do it? Doesn't really sound like I've got much of a problem then does it? Well, I then attempted to update the OS to OS X 10.6.8 so I could update again to mavericks. I installed the update to 10.6.8 and now I'm stuck in a perpetual log-in loop. The password is correct, it starts to log-in, then blue screen and back to log-in... repeat to fade or until you feel like giving your mac a Basil Faulty style thrashing, which ever comes first.
I've ordered a thumb drive with Lion 10.7 on so that I can attempt to try again (really can't be bothered to re-install the optical drive), but I was hoping someone may have experienced this kind of issue before and have some kind words of wisdom. No worries if not, I'll just go outside and try to find a decent branch to thrash my previously loved mac with
    Cheers
    Rich

Right well it appears I have further complicated things for myself. Whilst I was waiting to sort out my MBP, I restored from time machine to my mac mini so that I had a machine to work from. Then I fixed my MBP by installing new drives (SSD and HDD where the optical drive used to be), and using migration assitant to copy everything over from time machine. So now I technically have two machines the same.
Only problem is when I try to update the MBP with Mavericks it tells me it cannot install on this machine. Is this because I did restored the same original mac to two new machines?

Thanks Jeff, I was not aware that a template could be multi-page.  (All the existing templates were 1 page)
But it worked, saving me some steps.  When I was finished I renamed the document, and locked it.
Then tried to save it but  could not because it was locked.  I closed it, went to my Spread Sheet Folder ,
to find it, it was not there.  The Finder could not find it either.
    So I start over again.
I opened up Numbers and it showed my personal Numbers template folder, it contained both my new
original 4 page template and the vanished saved document!
I tried to delete the template containing these document data and could not - I had to go to the Library/Application Support/Numbers to physically remove it from this folder. Then I started over again.  I Finally found out how to make it work: I can now "save as", and then lock, and it will go to place where I want it to be saved and locked.
The secret is: Click on the document title in the menu bar, and it opens up  "Save as...", which works the same as in OS 10.4.11, and you can pick the place you want for saving.  Once done that, you can then lock the document in the same pull down menu, and then close it.
I also found later that I can delete a template from its folder, by letting Numbers open the templates,
clicking on the one I want to remove, then go to the "Numbers Menu/File/Move to...", select "Desktop"
and from there the selected template can then be thrown into the Trash from there.
It appears now that the real fault of the Numbers software is that the "Save as" command is not available in the "Edit" or "File" pull-down menus, but hidden behind the title of the document.
