Start up tone disable?

Hi.
Does anyone know how to disable the start up tone? The only way I can do it is to have the mute button on when I switch the mac off. It won't do it then when I turn it on next. All a bit fiddly so I was wondering if there was a way to just disable that.
Many thanks.
Adam

  • 6700 slide - messages and start up tone

    Hi,
I've got a flashing envelope on my main display screen but I've not got any messages - help!
Also, how do i get rid of the start up tone when I switch my mobile on?
And I thought I'd bought a really simple mobile.
    Thanks in advance.

For the flashing envelope do this:
Menu > Messaging > Options > Sim Messages > Delete all of the old messages you see in that menu.
The startup animation cannot be disabled but you have a few options for the sound:
    1. Put the phone in silent mode before you switch it off.
    2. Press any key (or maybe the end call key) just as the tone starts to sound. Sometimes pressing just before it sounds works too.
    3. In your current profile disable the warning tones. This may stop the sound but will also stop the sound in some games and system notifications.

  • Fans & hard drive spin, no start up tone or display... help?

I just sold my old G4 tower on ebay, and the buyer tells me there's no start up tone or anything on his monitor, but the hard drive spins and so do the fans. The CD drawer opens but holding "c" and booting from the software disk doesn't work. He's tried resetting the pram, pressing the cuda switch and removing the battery. I of course made sure the computer ran before I shipped it, and in fact this computer has never given me any problems whatsoever. Does anyone have suggestions for what to do from here? Or even a guess as to what happened... I'm confused because there must have been some damage during shipping, but the box was fine and the computer was fine inside as well. On top of that, I'd expect some kind of an impact to affect moving parts like the hard drive, but that spins with no problems, and if it was just a hard drive problem booting from the software disk should work.

Hi, Alex, and welcome to the Discussions!
Any chance that the new Mac owner might join the Discussions and get an independent review and advice from the Members? We'd be happy to help him try to get up and running, as long as it's kept independent from this particular topic (since this really isn't a place for a potential buyer-seller dispute...)
What model Mac are we referring to here?
As previously referred to, the startup memory settings are commonly lost when one has a weak, dead, or defective battery and the Mac is then disconnected from an AC power source for a period of time. Oftentimes, the Mac can be restarted by removing the battery completely, doing a PMU reset, hooking up the power cord, and restarting with the battery removed. This might confirm that the Mac is indeed okay, perhaps maybe just needing a new battery (which he can test with a voltmeter, per Texas Mac Man's Tutorial).
You didn't mention whether or not the owner is using your original monitor, mouse and keyboard. This could be pertinent information in troubleshooting this, if the PMU reset/battery doesn't correct things.

Used the right memory according to page, both for my iMac and MacBook Pro, iMac worked, MacBook Pro didn't start (warning tone).
    Any idea?

I suggest you buy your memory from OWC or DataMem. Both guarantee the memory works or will replace it if it does not, no questions asked, within their 30 day return period. I've used both for over 20 years, and no complaints.

    Vibha,
    >Try disabling the the Photo Downloader by right clicking the icon with a camera and a green arrow in the system tray and selecting Disable on the menu.
This sounds like the same thing that is happening with the Organizer of PS Elements 4. I have heard people say that the icon in the system tray and the problem of taking over the flash drive comes back again after the next reboot.
So should the disable of the downloader done from the System Tray persist after a reboot? Or is there something else that needs to be done to keep it disabled across reboots?
Please answer these questions for both PSA SE 3 and PSE 4. Thank you.

  • Grey screen only after start up tone

Have a 2008 Mac Pro, when I start it up, I get the start up tone, then it just goes to a gray screen.  A few times yesterday, the Apple logo would show up with the spinning wheel...even once got the "No Entry" sign.  Is this a power supply issue or a drive issue or something else?  Is there any way to get the info of the drives?

The chime is generated in software after millions of instructions have been executed. It indicates that if an appropriate Boot device can be found, booting is likely.
The gray screen can only occur after the software initializes the display.
The Gray Apple is loaded off a Boot device -- it is not present in the ROM code available at Startup.
In summary, you have progressed far beyond fundamental problems like power supplies. This article address the "No entry" sign:

  • Start up tone echo

My Black Mac Book is running fine. However, it has recently developed a disconcerting habit. Upon start up here the open tone like normal. Then in about 5 seconds I hear a short, soft echo of the tone. Five seconds later I hear another short, soft echo. Then it starts up normally.
Like I said, the MacBook otherwise runs normally, but I have always heard alterations in the start up tone can help diagnose problems.
Do I have a problem and how do I solve it.
    Thanks in advance.

Try resetting your PRAM. If that does nor work, do an Archive and Install.

  • Freeze after start up tone

I'm looking for some tech advice.
My MBP was working fine. The next next day I started it and immediately after the start up tone, I received an error message and it asked me to power down the computer by holding down the power button.
The error message can be seen in the screen shot attached. If more info is needed I can add a better screen shot.
I tried rebooting in safemode by holding down the shift key directly after the start up tone, but I received the same error.
    Any thoughts from the community?
    OS X 10.7.2 MacBook Pro 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB SDRAM

I wiped the hard disk and then made a restore via Mac OS X Utilities. About 20% of the time needed into the Time Machine restore, a error message popped up saying it wasn't possible and that I have to restart my MacBook Pro.
When I restarted the MacBook Pro, it goes directly to Mac OS X Utilities. I tried the Time Machine restore and I the same thing happened again, "About 20% of the time needed into the Time Machine restore, a error message popped up saying it wasn't possible and that I have to restart my MacBook Pro.".
I restarted again and tried to reinstall OS X Lion. After I sign into my apple account and verifies that I purchsed Lion in the past, it say it will download and the application and then restart. The amount of time this takes is extremely slow....something like 14 hours. Neverthless, it completed....but when it restarts it goes back to the same Mac OS X Utilities screen.
I have run out of solutions on how to fix my Mac Book Pro. Thoughts?
