Starting multiple instances of Matlab in Mac OS X Tiger

I am trying to start multiple instances of Matlab in Mac OS X 10.4, that is, there are several users in this machine, and they all need to use Matlab. Right now, only one user is able to do so, when a second user logs into his/her account and they start Matlab, it does not start. Actually, if one user has X11 open (not even Matlab) and another user tries to start Matlab it won't start. I'm not sure if this is a license problem, an X11 problem, or a Matlab problem. To start matlab, I am using the StartMATLAB.app located in the Applications folder. Following are the details for the hardware:
Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier:
MacPro2,1
Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 3 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per processor): 8 MB
Memory: 8 GB
Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MP21.007F.B06
SMC Version: 1.15f3
Serial Number: 157***UPZ
Some information about Mac OS:
System Version: Mac OS X 10.4.11 (8S2167)
Kernel Version: Darwin 8.11.1
The version of X11 is:
X11 1.1.3 - XFree86 4.4.0
I appreciate your help.

See this article: An easy way to run multiple instances of any program.
I believe another alternative is to provide a separate copy of the application in the users own Home folder by placing it in the /Home/Applications/ folder. This may not work for all applications as some simply will not run multiple instances of itself.
Licensing is of course a separate issue as each unique user may require a license, although many licenses only restrict use to one CPU at a time rather than multiple users on a one CPU.

    Hey Kyle,
    Check your services and see what’s running.  This can be done by going to Start>>Run and type “services.msc”.   Then look for anything that starts with National Instruments or NI.  Look to see if there are any entries running twice or if you are trying to call a service that is already running.

  • Runtime.getRuntime().exec(): Starting multiple instances ...

    Hi,
    In my application, the user may start the Internet-Explorer to display a webcam by pressing a button in the java application. My problem is, the every time, the user presses this button, a new instance of the Internet Explorer opens. I cannot use waitFor(), because the Java application must run beside the IE. Even more, it could be possible, that IE is running before the Java application is started.
    How can I ensure, that only one instance is generated? Can I test, if an instance is already running?
    Thanks a lot for your help in advance
    Michael

    the solution that comes to my mind is create a separate thread to invoke IE and in that thread you can use waitFor()
    you can use an if condition and by setting some variable you can assure that only after waitFor() is completed the loop is executed again
    but if IE is already running -- a new browser wil be fine right?

  • Launchd starting multiple instances of named (BIND)

    Hi,
    I'm trying to get named (BIND) to launch on startup, so I put the following plist in /Library/LaunchDaemons :
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
            <key>Disabled</key>
            <false/>
            <key>Label</key>
            <string>org.isc.named</string>
            <key>OnDemand</key>
            <false/>
            <key>ProgramArguments</key>
            <array>
                    <string>/usr/sbin/named</string>
                    <string>-c</string>

            </array>
            <key>ServiceIPC</key>
            <false/>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    And, it launches on startup, except that it keeps launching more instances.  I only need one.  What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,
        -Jon

    I figured it out.  I need to run named in the foreground.  Not exactly sure why, but not running it in the foreground must make launchd think that it's not running, so it starts another copy...
    The -f option is needed to do this, so the plist should look like this:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

  • Forms10g - starting multiple instances of an application on the client

    Hello,
    On the client forms10g application A is started
    in a browser window XY.
    If I start another forms10g application B
    (in a browser window named XY) the forms application A
    is REPLACED by application B in the existing browser window XY?
    Forms Application A seems to disappear?
    maybe the call of the forms-applet with always the same
    browser window name is the problem?
    any ideas?

    If you are using the same browser window, then I guess that is the way it is supposed to work. To run two different applications separately, you will have to use two different broser sessions.
    Note: Opening a new window using 'Ctrl+N' or File->New->Window will not work with Forms. You need to start a new broswer freshly.

  • Multiple instance of same mac on network

    Hello,
    Running OS X Yosemite, I've noticed multiple instances of the same mac appearing on my home network.  Has anyone else encountered this and know of a way to fix it?  Currently, I have to try more than one instance before I find the "correct" icon to connect.

    10.10.1, when I posted. Last night I installed 10.10.2.  It got hung up on the "Restarting..." (w/App Store logo) screen for over 2 hrs, so I let it run overnight.  It was still stuck in the morning so I just shut it down.  After restarting, everything looks fine (cautiously optimistic)!  There is only ONE instance on the network!!   I read some tips in other forums and the simplest one I used, which wouldn't do more harm than good, was to turn off my air printer during the reboot.  I am good for now and will repost if the problem returns. William Lloyd how long since you updated have you been multiple-instance-free?

  • Start multiple domains simultaneously on 1 Weblogic server installation?

    Is it okay to start and run multiple domains simultaneously. Better yet, when having multiple domains on 1 WLS server, should each domain have a different port number in order to be run simultaneously?
    Here's my scenario - I installed Oracle Business Intellgence, which by default installs and configures WLS server for certain Business Intelligence applications (BI Publisher). This instance was running fine and good and still is.
    Then I had another application, Oracle Data Integrator, which has a Console piece that requires a domain on WLS. So instead of modifying the existing domain for Oracle Business Intelligence, I created a new domain via the Configuration Wizard and selected those components for Oracle Data Integrator.
    therefore current domains:
    ...\domains\bifoundation_domain --> installed automatically as part of Oracle Business Intelligence
    ...\domains\odi11g --> I created this domain after I
    Now I have 2 domains under 1 WLS Server (windows 7 64bit), but if I startWeblogic.cmd for the bifoundation_domain, and I startWeblogic.cmd for the odi11g...then only the components for the bifoundation_domain become available via the WLS Console.
    Questions:
    - Can I run both domains simultaneously?
    - Should I have modified the bifoundation_domain to include Oracle Data Integrator component; therefore only having 1 domain but having everything run under that domain?
    - Does the Port for each domain matter? both bifounddation_domain and odi11g domain use ports 7001
    Are there any other considerations? Thanks much.

    Hi,
    It is perfectly OK to run multiple domains on a single Weblogic server installation. Only constraint would be you have enough capacity available on your server to start multiple instances.
    Things to note is, if your domain1 is running on listen address : port { localhost : 7001 } then your other domain should be configured on a different port say {localhost : 8001 }. If you want both domain to run on same port then go for virtual IP's to be plumbed on your physical network interface and configure as,
    domain1 - { ip1 : 7001 }
    domain2 - { ip2 : 7001 }
    this way you will can access both domain admin console on same port.
    Remember, Weblogic resources cannot be shared between domain, however a single nodemanager will be enough to monitor both the domains.

  • Multiple instances of mplayer with jack

    "_R_ealtime software mixing ?!?! wtf thats awesome--actually im not a studio junkie, i just need sound on one of them"
    i understand that the casual nature of my involvement with jackd suggests a less-than-appropriate level of respect and diligence for what this almighty app is capable of serving up.  i just need to level audio volume on multiple instances of mplayer with software mixing (my sound card is cheap).
    all my jackd configs are vanilla from the wiki as stated below.  if anyone has another solution or a request for information in regard to this solution please reply.  as always, thanks in advance
    --here is some err... background
    i have a some files that i would like to run with mplayer and a video file [with its own audio] that i would like to run concurrently.  it should be possible to use jackd to let one instance of mplayer show video with no sound while permitting the audio from the other instance to play at arbitrary volume.  without jack, i cannot control sound independantly since both instances seem to use the same device (PCM0).  furthermore i have found that starting multiple instances of mplayer leads to weird artifacts which persist after all running instances of mplayer concurrent with artifact appearance have been closed.
    so i installed jack-audio-connection-kit following the wiki verbatim.  then i installed qjackctl.  starting jackd as root and qjackctl with sudo allowed me to see the first instance of mplayer but not the second.
    what is the difference between running mplayer through alsa and running mplayer through jack through alsa (not sure if the objects are accurately laid out there but whatever)?  the wiki basically provides an out of the box solution for software mixing a bunch of inputs (i have friends who do sound professionally though not with linux and im envisioning way more complicated stuff than my humble pair of mplayers

    If you run one file with '-ao null' and the other one with '-vo null' you can manipulate them independently, there's no sound mixing involved, it just allows you "to add visuals to an audio feed spontaneously". They can both be run with 'af scaletempo' to speed up / slow down etc.
    Hmm, wonder if that's what the OP was looking for?

  • Multiple instances of an air app

    Is there a way to create an AIR app that can have multiple instances of itself running on the same windows machine?

    Ahh.  So you're saying in the air application descriptor under
    <!-- The application identifier string, unique to this application. Required. -->
    <id>YourAppId</id>
    if this is different you can start multiple instances?
    Let's see... [tests]
    Yep, it works.
    Not a lot of fun having to do this manually each time in FB, but at least it's possible.

  • "Updates" in Mac App Store contains multiple instances of same patch?

    I started with a newly opened MacBook Air (mid-2013) with Mountain Lion.  I used the Mac App Store to install Mavericks and the few subsequent OS patches.  In "Updates", I see multiple instances of the same patch, listed a few times:
    MacBook Air SMC Firmware Update v1.9 (3 times)
    Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update v4.09 (2 times)
    MacBook Air EFI Firmware Update v2.7 (1 time)
    iPhoto v9.5 (1 time)
    I haven't noticed anything wrong with the system, but it's weird to see a patch "installed" multiple times?  Anyone know why this is?
    Thanks!

    Yes, seen that little occurrence more than a few times, eventually it will vanish from what I've seen.
    If you installed it fine, no worries.

  • Disallow running multiple instances of the same web start application..

    on the client? I have an application that is launched on the client by clicking on the link to the JNLP file. The problem is that I don't want the application to launch twice if the user clicks the link twice. Is there a way to keep web start from running multiple instances of the same app?
    I don't want to just disable the button after it is clicked because then the user won't be able to get back in if they need to.
    Any help out there?
    Thanks,
    Melanie

    The way I do this is to try connect to an obscure port number on the localhost at startup.
    if this connection succeeds I assume the app is already running. otherwise the program continues and registers as a server at that port number.
    I actually take this a little bit further by registering a web server at this port (I use the Brazil server), That way if the program finds an instance of itself running it can send a message to the web server and ask the program to do something (like start another window if,for instance you wanted to allow this but only within the same VM).

  • Does multiple instances of DAQmx start task result in error?

    I am trying to read voltages from pressure transducers and LVDTs in two separate While Loops. But when running the program there is an error regarding DAQmx Start Task.vi. So I was wondering if multiple instances of DAQmx Start task results in error. I have attached the vi.

    Thank you for the reply. New to Labview so I didn't know that we had to search using the error code, I tried searching using text though. Will do that from the next time, thanks.
    I do not have the problem with the write tasks but only with the read tasks. Right now I have one start task for all the input from the pressure transducers and LVDTs and three start tasks for the three analogue outputs and the program seems to run fine.

  • Contribute multiple instances of the same connection appear on login/start screen

    I am administering a series of sub-websites under one primary umbrella.
    - The Primary Umbrella site does not run under the Contribute Publishing Server
    - The secondary (child) sites are managed by the Contribute Publishing Server
    - We recently added a user to several of these subsites
    - After we added the user, we've had a problem with other user profiles.
    - Multiple instances of the same connection will appear upon login on the start screen ( about:startscreen ). However the user seems to only be able to credential to one of them, not both.
    I have gone into the user profile directory within Windows directory structure and removed both site dirs. However when restarting and reconnecting, both appear again.
    Anyone else have this issue and what is the remedy and fix?

    I tried to add a screenshot, however it would not let me upload.
    I get: An error occurred while trying to submit your post. Please try again.
