Starting tomcat issue

hello guys
I'm developing a servlet with JBuilder Enterprise but when I try to run it tomcat 5.5 doesn't start . The application raises this exception
"java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/catalina/startup/Bootstrap
I added the bootstrap.jar to the project's "required librairies"
I also added the path to that file to my windows PATH environment variable but I'm still getting that error.
I'm able to run tomcat independently however
What am I missing?
Thanks for any information

My prefered solution in your situation would be to ditch JBuilder and user Eclipse with the sysdeo Tomcat plugin, but maybe that's not an option.
The bootstrap.jar is required to start Tomcat, but should not be required by your project. I haven't used JBuilder for years now, but in Eclipse you definte a Run target and add bootstrap.jar to the run target's classpath
The main class to launch tomcat is org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap and you may need the following VM arguments
-Dcatalina.home="C:\Apps\jakarta-tomcat-5.5.4" -Djava.endorsed.dirs="C:\Apps\jakarta-tomcat-5.5.4\common\endorsed" -Dcatalina.base="C:\Apps\jakarta-tomcat-5.5.4" -Djava.io.tmpdir="C:\Apps\jakarta-tomcat-5.5.4\temp"
You'll probably need a load of other jars in your classpath too.

    Can't Start Tomcat 5 as a Service on XP, when I do
    tomcat5\bin\net start tomcat5
    I get "NET" is not recognized as an internal or external command
    where's that net command coming from? java or XP
    thanks

    You are trying to start the program called tomcat\bin\net which does not exist. The net command belongs to Windows. Just issuing "net start tomcat" or "net start tomcat5" should work from any directory.
    Or just go through the Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services dialog to start and stop Tomcat as a service.

  • Problem in Starting tomcat in new window

    I Have configured tomcat set environment and done all the stuff but while starting tomcat
    Another DOS window breifly opens and closes, (I can
    not read the message in
    that window), and the above window remains open.
    I do not get a new window or anything after this. I
    tried opening my browser
    and typing http://localhost:8080/ in the address
    line, but I get the
    "Cannot find server or DNS Error" from the browser.
    I tried changing the
    port to 80 instead of 8080, but that doesn't work
    either.
    I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone can help get me
    past this issue.

    I would suggest deleting all the log files under tomcat\logs and then try starting it up. When it fails go to the logs folder and look through all the files that were created and see if there is any error message. it should tell you why its not starting properly.

    Which file is it refer to ?
    Where is the propert file to set this?

    Hello,
    It looks like at one time or another, you tried setting up the Flash Access Reference Implementation License Server.  Part of that package is a packaging server (which interfaces with a Graphical UI to package content).  The error you're seeing below suggests something from the Reference Implementation is left behind.
    I suggest doing the following:
    1. Shut down your Flash Access license server
    2. Remove the following from your <tomcat installation directory>/webapps
         2a. (file) flashaccess-packager.war
         2b. (directory) flashaccess-packager
    3. Remove the directory <tomcat installation directory>/work/Catalina
    4. Remove the directory <tomcat installation directory>/conf/Catalina
    5. Start your server
    Also - something to note is that your logfile seems to indicate only an issue was found with the packager deployment.  If there are no issues around the flashaccessserver, then your license server should still work, as those 2 different services (packager server & license server) are independent of each other.
    cheers,
    /Eric.

  • Error while starting Tomcat

    Hi,
    This may be a very basic question on tomcat server:
    What is the difference between creating a server (through the server View provided in eclipse) and using the three icons (at the top, just below the main menu) to start tomcat? I am new to Tomcat and am developing a web appln on tomcat.
    Another question that i have is,
    1. To which folder is my application deployed in Tomcat? For.e.g in Jboss the application as a war file can be fond in Jboss/server/default(or all)/deploy.
    2. In Jboss i have an option to publish the project, if i start Tomcat by the 3 icon buttons provided at the top, how can i ensure that my latest code is published to the tomcat server.
    3. What is this Tomcat manager screen for? How can i make use of this?
    Apart from these, i am getting a few exceptions when i start tomcat (both by the 3 buttons and by creating a server in the server view), here is the list (from the console);

    Hi.
    In order to run a web project, you have first to create a server in eclipse. Normally, this is done only the first time: you don't have to do it for every project and/or run.
    To run your project in aserver, you hava to select the project in the package explorer, pick the middle-button :(green circle, play without overlays), and select Run As -> Run on server.
    There, you should select a server if you already configured one or create a new one.
    Now, I think that the error you're getting has nothing to do with JSF. It's more likely a Spring configuration error. You may have declared a JNDI DataSource for example named "service-name" in applicationContext.xml but not in your Container (Tomcat, JBoss, etc.).
    Regards.

    paths with spaces in them are a problem. surround them with quotes and see if that helps.

    I had the same problem reported to me. The error appeared when trying to debug a web application in JBuilder and was caused by trying to use debug features with JDK 1.2.2 without JPDA being available. Either change to use a later JDK (JPDA Is included from 1.3 on) or download JPDA from Sun and install it to clear the problem.

  • Problem in ant script (starting tomcat)...

    Hi,
    in my ant script (build.xml) I have some targets to start/stop tomcat:
        <!-- ================================ -->
        <!-- start/stop tomcat servlet engine -->
        <!-- ================================ -->
        <!-- check whether server is already running -->
        <target name="-started">
            <condition property="server.started">
                <and>
                    <socket port="${tomcat.port}" server="${tomcat.server}"/>
                </and>
            </condition>
        </target>
        <!-- start tomcat -->
        <target name="start" depends="-started" description="start tomcat server"
            unless="server.started">
            <echo message="Starting tomcat servlet engine..."/>
                <java classname="org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap" fork="yes">

                <jvmarg value="-Djava.io.tmpdir=${catalina.dir}/temp"/>
                <arg value="start"/>

                </classpath>
            </java>

                    <pathelement location="${catalina.dir}/bin/bootstrap.jar"/>
                </classpath>
            </java>
        </target>The problem I have is, when using another target which depends on the tomcat start target, for example my list target:
        <target name="list" depends="start" description="list installed web applications">
            <list url="${url}" username="${username}"
                password="${password}"/>
        </target>When executing the list target, tomcat starts up correctly but the list target is not executed.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Best regards
    - Stephan

    No, I don't think that's the problem.
    In my opinion, the problem has something to do with
    fork="yes"in the start target.
    But how can I tell ant to first execute another target (the target that starts tomcat) and then execute for example the list target (which lists all the installed web apps)? When using the depends attribute it doesn't work:
    <target name="list" depends="start">
        <list url=.../>
    </target>When executing the list target, tomcat starts automatically (start target) but the list target is not executed after that :-(
    Any ideas?
    Best regards

  • How to start tomcat at boot on 10.8

    I have been trying for days to get Tomcat to start on system boot. I have it working fine as an launch daemon when I log on, but I want it to start when the system starts.  I have installed the plist to start tomcat in /System/Library, changed the ownership to root:wheel, ensured that the script it runs is accessible and workable, but no luck.  Where am I going wrong.

  • MAJOR Start-up Issues:  Can my imac be saved?

    Hello all-
    I sure hope someone can help me. I am really worried about the state of my imac. It is only ONE YEAR old and has always been maintained with the latest updates.
    Quick background: A few weeks ago, while in screensaver mode, I returned to my mac to find a white screen with a folder and a question mark. I had never seen this before! It was frozen. I had to force shut down by holding the button on back. Since that time, the same thing has sporadically happened when the computer was in screensaver mode. In the last few days the problem has worsened with start up issues. Yesterday, when i started up the computer I kept getting just a blank white screen and what sounded like "a slow revving" of the disc several times and then nothing. After continually trying to restart (including in Safe Mode) eventually I got the apple logo and it started. When that happened, I immediately backed up everything for fear my hard drive is dying and then began to troubleshoot.
    What I've tried: After looking through the threads I have tried a number of suggestions.
    - I repaired the Disk using First Aid (it says all was Okay)
    - I repaired permissions
    - I disconnected all cords & reset the SMC
    - I booted from the disc & ran the Extended Apple Hardware Test (it said all appears Okay)
    After doing these things last night, the computer started up several times just fine so I shut it down for the night.... which brings me to this morning!
    Start up was MUCH worse than yesterday. Same slow revving sound, white screen and nothing (at least 10 times) - even when trying Safe Mode. Then it worsened to a black screen and no sound at all - as if nothing was happening. I thought it was dead! I unplugged the power cord for 15 seconds and tried again - this changed it back to the white screen and a sound of more revving power. After about 3 tries, I got the apple logo and the spinning wheel for about 2 minutes - then it started!
    This is where I am now. I am afraid to turn it off and not sure what else to try. I thought after all I did last night, the problem was fixed. Why does the hardware test and repair disc say all is fine? And why after doing those things last night did it start up numerous times? (and speedy too!) But then this morning I'm back where i started.... ? How can I troubleshoot this problem further?
    I would really like to try everything before resorting to taking it in. Money is tight right now.
    GREATLY appreciate any advice!
    Thanks a lot,
    Karen

    Warning!! ** (See bottom of post)
    New Development: From Disk Utility, I chose to run "verify disk" again. (Somewhere I had read that sometimes, it needs to be run a few times before it will find a problem with the disk).
    Sure enough! This time I got errors and it suggested I repair the disk!
    Errors in verify mode were in RED as follows:
    Invalid index key
    The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired
    Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed
    I then restarted with the system disc, opened First Aid and chose Repair.
    The following showed up in RED during the repair process:
    Invalid index key
    Incorrect number of thread records
    Invalid directory item count
    volume bit map needs minor repair
    Invalid free block count
    volume header needs minor repair
    And finally in GREEN (after 10 min):
    HD Repaired Successfully
    ** After doing this, and trying to restart, i get the white screen and the spinning wheel indefinitely. (even when i try Safe Mode) It appears I can no longer boot my HD. I wanted to share the errors above incase it brings anyone to any further insight, but I'm not so sure it helped my situation.
    Suggestions?

  • Eclipse 3.0 can't start Tomcat 5.0...

    Hi,
    I've installed Tomcat 5.0, Eclipse 3.0 and Sysdeo-Plugin ( com.sysdeo.eclipse.tomcat_3.0.0).
    After opening Eclipse I've tried to start Tomcat within Eclipse.
    I got the following error-message:
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/catalina/startup/Bootstrap
    Next a pop-up-alert was displayed with the following content:
    Java Virtual Machine Launcher: Could not find the main class. Program will exit.
    After trying to start Tomcat agin, errLog showed the following 2 errors:

    Do you have any idea, in order to fix the bug...?

  • Start Tomcat 5.5 with Security Manager

    Recently, i have installed Tomcat version 5.5.8 but i have problem to start tomcat with a Securiy manager.
    For Tomcat version 4.xx we could start Tomcat with SecurityManager by using the "-security" option at "%CATALINA_HOME%\bin\startup.bat" after configured the catalina.policy file.
    But i couldn't do so at Tomcat 5.5.8. Any idea? Many Thanks.

    Start it yourself with
    java -Dcatalina.home=$CATALINA_HOME -Djava.security.manager -Djava.security.policy=="your.policy" -cp your.classpath org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap
    Cheers,
    Arnaud
