Stat collection for VLDB 10g
hi
have large data warehouse db , we create a new partition on monthly basis problem is we need to force stat collection for those new partitions on weekly basis and rebuild relevant indexes,
what are options and best practices for this particular release?
its version 10.2
thanks

thanksVLDB, so what is the size of database?
Is it possible to perform gather stats on whole database daily?
if no other option then go for Round-Robin stats, so that for the large objects, perform gather stats on partitions as per your convenience.

Comments on "Auto" Stats collection practice in 10g
We going to implement auto stat collection practice in our production env. Can someone on this forum comment on the results / experiences ? As per Tom Kytes he is sceptical on going with this practice because it uses AUTO method_opt option which actually can result in different stats being collected based on column usage and data distribution.
http://asktom.oracle.com/pls/asktom/f?p=100:11:0::::P11_QUESTION_ID:52288431326913.
Thank YouHi
Can someone on this forum comment on the results / experiences ?As for any "automatic feature" it works fine in many situations but not always. You have to test it to know if in your situation it is usable or not. IMHO it makes sense to give it a try...
can result in different stats being collected based on column usage
and data distribution.This is the purpose of AUTO. So, no news here.

10g Automatic Stats Collection -- AUTO ( METHOD_OPT)
I have implememted Oracle 10g Auto Stats collection feature. To generate new stats on 10g optimizer I deleted the schema stats and then scheduled the DBMS_SCHEDULER to collect stats in AUTO method_opt.
I see that the new 10g optimizer is collecting stats differently in different databases eben through they have the same data.
For exampl I see that it collected Histograms on 10 columns in one table in one environment but it generatd histograms only on 9 columns in another env.
I am concerned that the stats difference will result in the execution plan getting changed across different instances.
Can someone please clarify the cause of the same. How can I make sure tha the 10g optimizer is collecting stats uniformly across different envs.
Thank YouYou wrote:

and you should be concerned.
I would recommend not collecting stats the way you are but rather to use a nuanced approach where you collect only when they are stale or only when you know that changes have rendered old statistics invalid. -
Filter or Collection for Metadata State
When trying to save metadata, LR sometimes reports a conflict about a file having been changed by another program or other error. It is almost impossible to track down those conflicts as the only indicator of which images have the problem is the small indicator on the thumbnail.
I would like a filter or collection for metadata states. I am particularly interested in a) conflicts where LR believes the file was changed by another program, b) metadata not yet written to disk, c) any metadata errors.And since some of these conflicts put the images in a state of constantly flipping between a metadata state of "Up to Date" and "..." and thus producing a memory leak, I too would love to easily isolate these images. If I sort them by edit time this more than likely will find the conflicts (which are completely false by the way since I do not edit or even view the DNG files in any other program) more quickly but the last time it was of no help. I have had to turn off the automatically writing of XMP to stop the memory leak and remember to save after each session.

Installation error message for Oracle Database software for version 10g
Would someone be able to advise why I keep getting the following error message whilst installing Oracle trial Database software for version 10g Release 2 Standard Edition, Standard Edition One, and Enterprise Edition? Link listed below : -
http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle10g/index.html
Error message "Cannot create directory"C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_7\cfgtoollogs\dbca\projemp"
Below is the 12 steps that I go through, please advise what I'm doing wrong : -
1. (Operations) default is Create a database
2. (Database templetes) default is general purpose
3. (Database Identification) projemp.local for Global database name & projemp for SID
4. (Management options) default is "Configure the database with Enterprise manager, also the options button has been clicked for "Use database control for database management"
5. (Database Credentials) the options button has been clicked for "Use the same password for all accounts" so I've set up a new password, was that correct?
6. (Storage options) the options button is clicked for "File System - use the file system for database storage.
7. (Database file locations) the options button is clicked for "Use database file locations for template" Is this option correct? Other options are Use common location for all database files or use Oracle-managed files?
8. (Recovery configuration) the options button is clicked for "Specify flash recovery area
9. (Database content) nothing has been selected, the only option is "Sample schemas" should that be clicked?
10. (Initialization parameters) the options button is clicked for "Typical- allocate memory as a % of the total physical memory
11. (Database storage) no options available
12. (Creation options) the options button has been selected for "Create Database"
Click finish
I then get a screen stating General purpose, click OK then I get the following error message as stated at the start of this e-mail ""Cannot create directory"C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_7\cfgtoollogs\dbca\projemp".

I have been trying to install the "Oracle Database software for version 10g Release 2 Standard Edition, Standard Edition One, and Enterprise Edition" about six times with no success.Do you realize you just mentioned 3 different and distinct products? So which one are you installing?
>
I've gone through my courses instructions as listed above (1-12) and end up with the following error message"C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_7\cfgtoollogs\dbca\projemp".What course?
>
I've removed the software from my computer using control panel, programs & features then uninstall once but the other five times the software hasn't been listed. Whilst the Oracle was on my task bar I was able to install using Start > Programs > Oracle - HOME-NAME > Database Administration > Database Configuration Assistant.No you didn't. Database Configuration Assistant does not remove software. It can remove a database. As I mentioned before, there is a difference between the software and the objects that software manages. Deleting an Excel spreadsheet is not the same as deleting Microsoft Office. Deleting an Oracle database with Database configuration assistant is not the same as removing the Oracle software.
>
Now that oracle is not on my task bar I've unzipped the link below, clicked on db, Disk1, setup, changed the Database password (is that correct?) install and I get the following error message "Check complete. The overall result of this check is: Failed<<<<<
Problem: The install has detected that the primary IP address of the system is DHCP-assigned.
Recommendation: Oracle supports installations on systems with DHCP-assigned IP addresses;
However, before you can do this, you must configure the Microsoft LoopBack Adaptor to be the primary network adapter on the system. See the installation Guide for more details on installing the software on systems configured with DHCP."
So what did you do with the above error message? Did you follow up on what it said? Did you read the very fine Installation Guide that comes with the software? Did you read the section on networking considerations where it discussed DHCP assigned addresses and installing the loopback adapter?
http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle10g/index.html
Ok, that link takes us to the download page, which does not shed any light at all on your problems
I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium, 32 bit operating system, and my computer is saying I have 142 GB free space.
If you read the installation manual that came with the downloaded software, you'd have seen in the prerequisites that Home editions of Windows are NOT listed as supported platforms, whereas Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions specifically ARE listed as supportd.
Hope this is some help.And
I'm not to clever on computers so would you be able to advise how I get to the command window to issue the SET command please?
Also I've no idea what OS user I am, I'm taking an on-line Oracle course and been advised to install "Oracle Database software for version 10g Release 2 Standard Edition, Standard Edition One, and Enterprise Edition"
How do I find out if I'm part of an Administrator, ORA_DBA group ?
Can you walk me through how to create the directory from command line please?Ok, given the above statements from you, I'm not even sure where to begin. I don't want to be cruel, but this self-admitted lack of even the most rudimentary knowledge by someone attempting to learn about Oracle is truly astounding. What course are you taking? Why are you taking this course? -

I can reproduce the error in jdk1.5.0_03, jdk1.5.0_04 and jdk1.6.0-ea-b50. I am sure it's my program's fault, not the gc's. But as I have no knowledge of sun's JVM implementation, I don't know what may be the root cause. What error in JNI may cause the problem above?
Hope you can help me! Thanks ahead.
Best Regards,
Steven GongIt is a core dump. Hence i feel the problem is in
your native code. I think there is a null pointer
exception or any exception in your native code. Check
the native code. If it was java code problem, it
would have generated an exception.You mean there may be unhandled exceptions in native code that
may cause this problem? -
Doubt regarding automatic statistics collection in Oracle 10g
I am using Oracle 10g in Linux
Does statistic collection for tables throughout the database happen automatically or should we manually analyze the tables using
Analyze command or DBMS_STATS package ?
AWR collects statistics(snapshots) every 1 hr but does it mean it collects only session and database related statistics and not the table related statistics?I am using Oracle 10g in Linux Version and os name and version?
AWR collects statistics(snapshots) every 1 hr butIt's performance related statistics. Read about data gathering and AWR.
Note that AWR is an extra licensable feature thru Management packs. -

Errors using DBMS_SQLTUNE Advisors for Oracle 10g
I get errors trying to tune the below query for Oracle 10g using the DBMS_SQLTUNE advisors.
It happens when I wrap either a large block of PL/SQL code that uses bind variables or multiple nested subqueries with multiple JOIN conditions in a SELECT query statement that I wish to tune using the 10g SQLTUNE advisors.

benprusinskiHi, I was trying to use the DBMS_SQLTUNE package to tune my sql statements used in the huge procedure. I can successfully create a task and execute it. But when I run report tuning task, I'm always getting error like the one in below example. Two questions I have now.
1) Is this becuase I'm using bind, but not passing any values?
2) Can I able to use to this package to tune a procedures instead of sql statement?
Example output...

Best approach to store collection for html:options
I am using struts to develop my web application. I am trying to figure out the best way to store a Collection for html:options inside a html:select element.
My JSP page has a html:select statement which lists all the groups in a system. I have a member variable called getGroupNames() in my ActionForm class. When the JSP page is first requested, I populate the groupNames attribute of ActionForm class with a list of names. The html:options reads the groupNames attribute and lists all the group names.
The problem: Once the user selects a group name and then submits, if there is any validation problems in other fields in the JSP, I build ActionErrors object and forward the request back to the same JSP. However, now I get an error saying the groupNames is NULL.
Option1: One way to avoid this error is to AGAIN populate the groupNames list if there is a validation problem.
Option 2: Another way is to store the list of groupnames in a seperate bean (and NOT as an attrib of the ActionForm) and store it in the REQUEST scope. This way I think the I don't have reload the groupName list in case of a validation failure.
Could someone please help me in deciding which will be the right approach.
ThanksHi,
1,2 billion rows and each row of 50 bytes - approximately 56 GB around. Huge segment. As you stated it's an OLTP database, can you check across what is the percentage or maximum number of queries with developers - important column which they are querying across and application dealt with.
Based on the input of the above question we can check how best we can partition and columns we are dealing. Perhaps you have stated across historical data. From this kindly verify across what is the % of users check or go-back to historical information - based on that we can estimate the number of partitions we can create on segment and looking forward, you must estimate the % of increase of new/incoming data and day/month wise. so that you might be plan what can we do the old historical data.

Stats collection running long in 11g
Oracle11.2.0.1
Sun Solaris.
Stats collection running long for almost 12 hours from 6PM to 6AM daily and stats collection autotask is getting STOPPED after the window duration.
DBA_TABLES.last_analyzed is not getting updated after 2AM in the morning. I believe it is scanning some big tables, but not able to pin point the table/index.
And we've some a bunch of 100GB tables in the DB. Is there a way to find out which table it's gathering stats between 2AM and 6AM and not getting completed?
Thanks for your time!moreajays wrote:
Hi,
I would suggest to find out those tables with huge Table & last_analyzed is Null , these tables would be possible tables responsible for long run.
Only AWR ot other SQL Hist stats tables can help you to get details.
To fix this issue you should run stats gathering manually in day time (not in maintenance window) either with auto stats or with little estimate_percent (10 or 5)
After getting first successful analyze (manually) , maintenance stats will pick up new incremental stats thereafter
Ajay,
I don't think that your statement that after the gathering the statistics manually, it would be next done incrmentally is correct. The incremental statistics are introduced only for partitioned tables AFAIK. Can you post a link from the documentation that your mentioned behavior exists?

Bulk Collect for Uncertain columns
Hi Experts,
how to use bulk collect for uncertain number of columns of select statement.
Master table structure:
Create table tabmst
(id number,
cls_input varchar2(2000),
price number);
insert into tabmst(1,'select product, prod_price from product',500);
insert into tabmst(2,'select product, prod_price,purchase_dt from product',100);
insert into tabmst(3,'select * from product',1000);
Currently I want to store Select statement of cls_input column in a local variable like
dyn_qry:= cls_input; by using a cursor.
Now my question is how to use Bulk Collect by using "Execute Immediate" in Bulk collect variable as there is not certainity of the number of columns from "Select Statment". Please suggest.
Sample code:
I created TYPE variable for Bulk Collect also support blk_var;
Declare
dyn_qry varchar2(3000);
v_id number;
v_prod_price number;
v_product number;
cursor c1 is select * from tabmst;
begin
for i in c1 loop
v_id:=i.id;
dyn_qry:= i.cls_input;
Execute immediate dyn_qry into blk_var;
(Here I want to store the columns values from "blk_var" in local variables "v_prod_price" ; "v_product" ;. But it is uncertains of the columns of "Select statement")
End Loop;
End;
Now I want to store values of Each "Select statements columns" which is executing by dynamic SQL. but it is uncertain that how many columns will return from dynamic SQL.
Please suggest the approach on the same. Thanks in advance.Hi,
please do not post duplicated questions. Close (marking as answered and putting a note) your other thread regarding the same topic: {message:id=10890093}.
Additionally when you put some code or output please enclose it between two lines starting with {noformat}{noformat}

'auto optimizer stats collection' in em12cr3
During installation of EM 12cR3 the OUI noted to 'disable stats gathering job', and indicated it would disable for me.
After installation I look at dba_auto_task and see that 'auto optimizer stats collection' is enabled.
The install docs Overview of the EM Prerequisite Kit also say to disable this for the install and upgrade.
What is not clear to me is: "is this only for the install/upgrade? should the collection be enabled after the install is complete?"Hi Sherrie,
auto optimizer stats needs to be disable only during install and upgrade of 12c cloud control
Once its done you can enable the auto optimizer stats collection at Repos DB level

I am thinking as the plan shows some FTS steps for those views (base tables for which stats were collected in 2004) and as there are indexes on those tables, the plan might change after stats collection.
I appreciate your inputs in this.
Thanks

RajivTxI am trying the INDEX hint
INDEX(table [index]) Forces an index scan of the specified table using the specified index(s). If a list of indexes is specified, the optimizer chooses the one with the lowest cost. If no index is specified then the optimizer chooses the available index for the table with the lowest cost.
I am confused whether I need to use the above hint or
/*+ hint(view_name.table_in_view) */
as I have views in the FROM clause.
Thanks
Rajiv
