StatsCollector, monitor a non-Mac server with BigTop ?

Hello,
I just discovered the new BigTop a few days ago, and I would like to know if anybody knows how to (if it's possible) monitor a Linux or BSD server with this great tool.
I know it uses statsCollector to collect data, is this tool open-source ? (I don't know where to look for such things)
If it is, is there any chance to be able to install it by hand ?
Thank you in advance,
Julien
PS: Please excuse my english

What's BigTop?
The only reference I know of it is for monitoring load balancers from F5, but I doubt that's where you're looking.
google doesn't appear to offer any clues, either.

  • Using unix 'diff' command to publish iweb to non .mac server

It is a common problem that you can't upload incremental changes to a website a web server that is not a .mac. Recently I found that the unix (shell) 'diff -qr' works nicely for this.
However I can't seem to get this to work in automator. That is where I need some help.
    What I did :
I have an iweb website in my directory
    Documents/website
I made a second directory where I store my uploaded version of the website:
    Documents/websiteonserver
Using a shell script I want to compare the differences between these two directories using the diff command in a shell script. When I run 'diff -qr websiteonserver website' in a terminal window, it gives a nice overview of which files are changed and which ones are new. When workin with iWeb this saves me a lot of time uploading my homepage to a non .mac server. I can only upload the changed files, which is usually only a few. Diff does not look at timestamps (which are useless in the iweb case) but it actually looks into a file and with the -q option it stops when it finds a difference. With the -r added (-qr) it also looks through all subdirectories and compares files with the same name.
I like to automate this process so that my wife can update our family homepage with just one mouseclick (or as few as possible)
Unfortunately the diff command in automator gives an error, and there's no info on why it does this.
    The commands I gave:
    cd Documents
    diff -qr websiteonserver website
(using PWD i verified that the path is correct like this). The only stumbling block for automator seems to be the diff command. Anybody any suggestions on this?
The next challenge is to take the diff output and use that to upload only changed/new files to a ftp server.
Any help / ideas are welcome
    Greetings,
    Adriaan

    Dear Cyclosaurus,
I used a single command as us specified. It really helped to add the path to the directories I wanted to compare. So now at least I got it two work partly:
It seems to work only if I compare two files. Comparing directories still does not work. Maybe diff generates some kind of error code when doing this??? It does not do that in the shell.
If I compare all files in directories + subdirectories , the workflow does not work. It seems as if it only accepts a single output line or so from the diff function. If there is more output (or maybe some newline character) the workflow halts. Very peculiar.
mmm.... I will try to make a shell script which I can run in automator. In the script file I will then generate a txt file. Then the automator can run the script and then it can open the resulting file in a text editor. See if that works.
mmm nope. I made a script like this:
    #!/bin/bash
    diff -qr ~/Documents/websiteon_theserver/ ~/Documents/website/ > ~/Documents/logfile.txt
I modified the atributes to executable and I could run it from the command line. The logfile.txt was created and has the correct info. I could not run it from automator...
I did copy the last line from the script into automator. And also there it does create the logfile, but the automator still says there was an error and stops.
maybe I should try Applescript, were it not that I am totally clueless on that language...

  • Non mac server publishing

When publishing to a non .mac server certain features do not work... any way to get them to work. rss for one
Are there any other features that I need to know about that may not work?
    Thanks
Mac Book Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Iweb 1.1.2

RSS should definitely work. It's just a matter of entering the correct domain name in the "Publish to Folder" dialog box and also uploading the correct items to your server. I can help you with this if you desire.
As far as other .Mac only features that won't work for you... these include blog commenting, search, password protection, the enhanced photo template slideshows, .Mac counters, etc.
Of course, you can find replacements for all of these features...
Blog comments: iComment/Haloscan combination from Chad Brantley
    Search: Google site search box
    Password Protection: htaccess files
    Slideshows: take your pick
    Hit counters: StatCounter.com

  • Comments Not Working on Website - published to non-.mac server

Hi there. I've read on a few non-apple sites of users having trouble with Comments and some other functions of their websites, built in iWeb, not working when they publish to a non-.mac server. I've built my website in iWeb, published via CyberDuck to a BlueHost server -- but now users can not post comments on my blog.
Has anyone found a way to fix this issue??
It seems incredibly pointless to even now have my own domain. I'm super close to giving up on iWeb all together because of this ridiculous issue.
    Thanks in advance.
    www.kellerowski.com

Unfortunately, blog comments are a MobileMe only feature along with the hit counter etc.
You have to publish to MobileMe if you want these features.
There are workarounds however. If you want to continue to use an iWeb blog, then you can use a third party comments feature. Take a look here http://www.intensedebate.com. It is free to set up on the site and all you then do is copy and paste the code into an html snippet on the page you want comments to appear in whatever format you want them.
Your other option is to ditch iWeb and if it is just a blog you want, use something like http://www.wordpress.com. This is free and you don't need a domain name and the blog is published on WordPress servers.
Your other option for a blog is http://www.posterous.com.
The iWeb blog system is not that good, so you might look into changing if a blog is what you want rather than a website.

  • We just moved from a Windows server to a Mac server with our Macs -problem!

We just moved from a Windows server to a Mac server with our Mac Network!!!
    Problem:
Now, when we create files from our personal computers, no one else can write them. We can all read these files, but when we make changes we have to save a version! This wasn't happening on the Windows server, so I can only guess that it's a setting on the Mac? (G4 Laptop running 10.4.5)
Can anyone help me figure out what setting needs to be changed?
Thank you very much in advance!
    -Alex

This is normal behavior, and is a result of the POSIX umask. Newly created files have their POSIX permissions (owner, group, and everyone fields) set such that only the owner can read and write.
The best way to solve this problem is to use an ACL entry to define desired permissions for a folder, specifying inheritance (e.g., permissions apply to this folder and any newly-created files or folders inside of that).
Please see my ACL Tips version 2 link for more information, including a more detailed explanation of POSIX and ACL permissions and how they work together: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1732788

  • Can you post Web-Gallery to a non .Mac server?

iPhoto 08 and web gallery look pretty neat.
Do you have to post the Web Galleries to .Mac or can you use a different server.
Would like to continue post our college sports photos to our campus (OS X) server using web-gallery.

Jack, I don't think you can post web galleries to a non .Mac server. There seems to be a lot of support behind the scenes that makes Web Gallery work as it does. Normal HTML doesn't work like that.
What you could do, which would bring some of the reflections-on-black look, is send the photos to iWeb and use the export HTML option (not sure what it's called) in the File menu to create a gallery that you could host on a non-.Mac server. It wouldn't look exactly the same but you'd get whatever is possible without the .Mac-supplied functionality.

  • Access Mail on Mac Server with non-Apple device

I currently have a Windows server with Exchange installed and am considering replacing it with a Mac Server. IF I do that, can my non-Apple Windoes 7 & XP computers access Mail on the Mac Server as they now do with Exchange?

Yes and no.  You will be able to access mail via IMAP but you will have a dickens of a time getting Address Book and Calendars to work.  Apple uses CardDAV and CalDAV respectively for these services.  Your options on WIndows are limited.  See here for options:
    http://caldav.calconnect.org/implementations/clients.html

If you are looking for something to "replace" Exchange, then check out Kerio Connect.

  • How do I use my own domain name  with Mac server with iWeb

For a number of years I have had my own domain name that when typed into a browser it would redirect the browser to my site on the .Mac server. I hear with iLife ’08 I can have my own domain name hosted by .Mac so I know longer have to have the long addresses for each pages the I have now for my site (i.e. the http://web.mac.com/thewildhearts/WildheartPhotography/NatureGalleries.html). How do I go about getting my domain name (wildheartphotography.com) so that Mac will host it and do I need to notify the current host that Mac will be hosting my site now?
Thanks. I really appreciate the help I get from this forum.
    Pat

It's very easy, really. You go to your domain control and redirect the address. IPower, for example points the domain name very easily: you just type in the URL of your site and it will point to your mac server.
I've used GoDaddy before and it is a bit more difficult to "point".

  • Best DNS setup for public-facing Mac server with no NAT?

What's the best way to set up the DNS server as a member of an existing domain with nameservers elsewhere for a public-facing server with no NAT?
We own the domain myexample.com and it's name servers and zone files are on a hosted linux server with mail/web server services.
We now have a Mac server hosted elsewhere and we want it to be a subdomain of our myexample.com i.e. macserver.myexample.com.
We haven't enabled NAT or DHCP so the Mac server host network IP is a public IP. There is no LAN.
When setting up the DNS server, what should the primary zone be? macserver.myexample.com, or myexample.com?
Any advice would be great. Mr Hoffman....are you out there?

You do need valid DNS services.  But you don't need to provide DNS on the same server.  And if you're not dealing with NAT, things can get easier.
The easiest approach available is to not run your own DNS services here.   This assumes the OS X Server box is configured on a static IP address, but then that's something OS X Server needs/wants/ expects.
Use the DNS provided by your domain registrar, and your ISP.    Or maybe on that Linux box, if that's publicly authoritative for the domain.
Enter the host name and the IP address into the public DNS services that you have configured for the domain, or that you have at your registrar or ISP, or on that Linux box.
You will need to have your ISP for the static IP configure a PTR record (reverse DNS) for the server, particularly if you're planning to run mail or related.

  • RSS button on non mac server

    Greetings,
Very new at this. I want to install an RSS button on my blog. The mac button doesn't work on Yahoo. Any suggestion?
Any reaction as well regarding the Technorati button?
    Counting button?
    Many thanks.

I'm not sure why you are saying that the RSS subscribe button isn't working at Yahoo. This is most likely due to the fact that you entered the incorrect host address in the "Publish to Folder" dialog window.
For example...if your hosting account is accessed by typing in http://www.yourdomain.com then you must type this into the URL box of the "Publish to Folder" dialog window. Then when you upload to your host, you must upload the two items that iWeb puts into the folder....
    My Folder
    \__ index.html
    \__ mysite folder
Don't upload the enclosing folder (My Folder)....just upload the index.html file and the mysite folder, so that your server directory structure looks like...
    http://www.mydomain.com
    \__ index.html
    \__ mysite folder
It is important to keep the relationship between the index.html file and the mysite folder intact as published by iWeb....otherwise your RSS feed URL will not work.
On a non-.Mac button, the RSS feed and Podcast subscribe buttons should work fine. The Apple counter does not work on non-.Mac servers. You will have to look into other services like http://www.statcounter.com for that.

  • Vm fusion and quickbooks on mac server with pc in office, vm fusion and quickbooks on mac server with pc in office

My Problem is our small company MUST use the windows version of QuickBooks and I would like to switch our windows environment over to a Mac server environment with all imacs and airs running VM Fusion with windows 7 and windows version of Quickbooks with the ability to access the Quickbooks from all computers.
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to do this?
    We currently have :
windows small business server, 3 windows computers, 2 ipads, 2 iphones. This all works ( we all can access the files at the same time )  but is getting dated and its time to upgrade
Would like to switch all of the windows computers and the server to imacs & lion server if we can still use the windows quickbooks with VM Fusion.
Any help would be much appreciated.
P.s. My wife is our in house IT person now but is not familliar with macs at all so I really need help to one up her on this
    Thanks,
    Chris

You do not actually need to have OS X server.  Just the client OS X is fine if you are not doing anything fancy Mac wise.
    1. Install fusion on each machine.  You will create a new VM, install your M$ client.  Check to see what the minimum requirement is for the version of QB you are using.
    2. Stop the MS machine and go into the VM hardware>network and make sure it is set to bridged with default adapter.  By default it does something else which creates a seperate subnet.  Bridged means the VM will see the same network the Mac is on.  This is also done on each machine.  I manually setup the IP on the M$ machines for reliability reasons.  Make sure and do all the M$ updates and register it.
    3. Now the M$ machines will see each other on the same subnet as the Mac's.  Setup QB according to their instructions.

  • Bridge Mac server with Windows possible?

    Hello Everyone,
Well I was tossed a big issue on my lap. Our servers are running Windows Server 2003 with a domain name of nt_domain which you could tell off the back it has an invaild character with the _ . A gentlemen before me found a bandaid of using this program called Likewise which allowed the Mac's to join the domain with the illegal character. He left me with an image of 10.7 with the Mac already configured. Well the new iMac's do not support 10.7 which my image is now worthless and 10.8 doesnt seem to like the Likewise program. The program gets an error when trying to join the domain and completely locks me out of the Mac and I mean LOCKS ME OUT because no reset password method works which forces me to reload the OS. I have no idea what to do because our network team doesn't seem to care about the issue so they will no change the domain name. We have a Mac Server 10.6 and I was told that I could make my own domain on the server and bridge it to the Windows domain so the users could still have access to the network drives. Any suggestions????
    Thanks

You probably have inadvertently set up SACL's.
    In server admin
    Select the server.
Click the Access button at the top.
    Click the services button.
Make sure that all services are available for all users.
Or if you're keen, make sure that you have allowed access to SMB for the users in question.

  • MAC server with emulator

I have a mac server at our office and we are trying to upgrade the mac server. apparently that's not possible because we do not have intel integrated processor.
we need to install an emulator on all separate computers and also on the server and use a program that is only accessible on windows.
its costly to buy a new server. that huge thing and i was browsing online and i'm wondering if it possible to use a mac mini as a server and was wondering how to and what would be the difference between using a server OS X Server X5 and using a mac mini as a server.
also, if i was to run the emulator on the server and all separate computers that are connected to the server, it would be accessible all at the same time right?
