Step Type Problems with TestStand 3.5

I have a TestStand system where I have created some custom step types (Created originally in TestStand 2.0). I've
used these step types successfully in TestStand 3.1 projects with no problems.
With TestStand 3.5 I have a recurring problem that I cannot clear.
Once the custom steps have been added to the system, I re-load my Process model sequence files and resolve type
conflicts by selecting currently loaded types. (Since my process model utilises these steps and was developed under
3.1)
I save the Process Model and then load in my test programs, again resolving type conflicts by selecting currently
loaded types.
So far so good.
However, when I exit the sequence editor I'm ALWAYS being prompted that the NI_FlowControl.ini typepalette file has
been changed.
This happens even when I set the system to have NO Process Model selected and don't load a program! i.e. I open the
sequence editor and shut it down immediately.
1. Why isn't the Sequence editor prompting me that it's about to change the typepalette file?
2. Why is it changing the type? (And at what point is it happening?)
3. I have no indication as to what has changed within the type and where the conflict is coming from.
4. Why is saving the type having no effect whatsoever?
At one point with a configuration it kept telling me that the NI_DatabaseTypes.ini file had changed (and that it was
the only one to change) I experimented by removing that type palette entry (since I didn't use the database steps
with my process model) and it then started complaining about one of the other NI types as being changed! (Is this a
TestStand bug?) or is there a decent explanation?
I've even tried redefining the typepalette files of my step types to create a clean system, but it all falls apart
whenever I try and load an existing test program. No matter how careful I am, TestStand insists on changing loaded
types without telling me or giving me the option to choose what I want to do!! (Note - re-writing the test programs
is NOT an option!)
Any ideas would be welcomed....

Brian,
Have you modified the CommonResults data type?  What is the version that you have loaded?  I have seen this problem when you have a newer version of a data type than the engine loads on startup.  You can fix this problem by either reverting back to an older version of that type (the same as the engine version), or using the following workaround:
In TestStand, open your type palette window. In the Palette pull down ring select "Customize". Create a new type palette and make sure it is the top-most palette in the list. Name it whatever you like. Click "Ok". Now select your NI_DatabaseTypes.ini from the pull down. Go to the "Standard Data Types" tab, select the "CommonResults" type and copy it.
Select your newly created type palette from the pull down, and paste the "CommonResults" type into this palette. Save all of your palettes.
You should no longer be prompted to save your type palettes unless an actual change has been made.

  • Type problem with InDesign, especially CC.

    Hi. I'm experiencing a type problem with InDesign, especially CC. When I open a type box, the cursor appears in the top right hand corner. I can correct that by selecting 'range left' but when I paste or type in my copy, the final period of each paragraph appears at the beginning of the last line. This is drivning me up the wall as I can find a way of correcting it.
    Any ideas to solve this problem?
    Thanks

    Are you using a MENA (Middle East North Africa, Hebrew, Arabic, Farsi, …) version? Then restting woul not help.
    If not, you have to create a new document with the same Paragraph, Character and Object Styles (name should be identical) and import them into the other document to overwrite these style oddities.
    If you are working without styles? Create correct new styles and apply them.
    I doubt that resetting preferences will change here anything as paragraph properties from any existing document will not be changed when working with new preferences.

  • Intermittent problem with TestStand calling CVI DLL calling MSCV DLL

    Sorry about cross post, but I am not sure which group is best to address
    this issue.
    Setup:
    Windows 2000 SP1
    TestStand 2.01f
    CVI 6.0
    MSVC++ 6.0 SP5
    Problem:
    I have a CVI Test Library DLL that contains test functions called by
    TestStand using the C/CVI adapter. The CVI Test Library DLL in turn makes
    several calls to another DLL written in MSVC++. I am experiencing an
    intermittent problem with one of the MSVC functions. The problem ~appears~
    to be stack related, but I am not sure. Among other things, this MSVC
    function accepts a const char * argument that is a TestStand lookup string.
    The function uses this string to access the TestStand API.
    What happens is this: Everything works fine. I then recompile the CVI DLL
    after making some mod, then run. The MSVC++ DLL asserts that the const char
    * arg passed by the CVI DLL is NULL. However, this is not the case if I
    single step through the CVI code. It has happened both with passing
    variables as the const char * argument and as hardcoded strings literals, so
    its not that I am actually passing NULL. The other argument to this
    function is the TestStand sequence context dispatch pointer (LPDISPATCH
    pobjSequenceContextDisp) and it always ~appears~ to be passed correctly.
    The problem is frustrating and hard to debug because I can not
    deterministically reproduce it. The problem ~never~ appears when I debug my
    MSVC++ DLL in Visual Studio. And it only occasionally appears otherwise.
    The problem, when it appears, always appears on the first run after
    recompiling the CVI DLL, though the problem does not happen after ~every~
    recompilation. I'd say it happens 1 in 6 times after a recompile.
    Recompiling the exact same code does not always make the problem disappear.
    If I change the CVI code (code that has nothing to do with the argument
    itself though) and recompile the problem almost always goes away. Selecting
    'Mark all for compilation' and rebuilding does not make the problem go away.
    Only tweaking the CVI code and recompiling does (usually).
    Whats more, the problem appears:
    * With the CVI DLL built as Debug or Release mode.
    * With the CVI default calling convention set to __stdcall or __cdecl.
    * With the C/CVI TestStand adapter set to run in-process or external
    instance of CVI.
    The problem appears to be some sort of stack or argument passing problem
    between CVI and MSVC, though thats just a guess based on the symptoms. I
    have quadruple checked the calling conventions of all declared functions.
    The CVI DLL functions all use TX_TEST (which resolves to __cdecl). The MSVC
    DLL functions all explicitly use __stdcall. Is there a problem with calling
    __stdcall MSVC functions from a __cdecl CVI function?
    I can find no other memory leaks or indications of memory corruption
    elsewhere in either the CVI or MSVC DLLs. Its only this one function that
    exhibits this strange 'null const char *' problem.
    Can anyone offer any ideas about what may be causing this problem? Anything
    else I should check/verify?
    Regards,
    Joe

    I was under the impression that as long as everything was explicitly and
    consistently declared, you could safely mix cdecl and stdcall f
    unction
    calls. Is it bad to do this? Is this a known issue with the CVI compiler?
    I've never seen a problem with doing this under MSVC++.
    I'll try wrapping them in cdecl calls for CVI - though we have a
    depressingly large number of stdcall functions in the MSVC DLL ;-). They
    need to remain stdcall in the DLL because we also call them from Visual
    Basic.

    I verified that the MSVC DLLs were either ALL Debug or Release. I too have
    seen nasty problems when MSVC Debug and Release is mixed.
    One thing I had not thought of until your reply: What about mixing CVI Debug
    DLLs with MSVC Release DLLs? Have you ever seen issues with doing this?

  • "error 3194 and have tried all recommended steps, first problem with this iphone"

    Hi, for a few months now I've been using my brother's old iPhone 3GS as an iPod, and I haven't jailbreaken it or anything of the sort, and I've installed every update since, and today I installed the newest update and since it has been in recovery mode and whenever I connect it to iTunes and try to restore (I backed up a few days ago) I am greeted with an iTunes message saying "error 3194" and I've tried everything mentioned in the specific update article for it except for the one pertaining to a .ipsw because when I go to advanced settings I am unable to find anything of the sort. And it'd be much appreciated if any of you could help! Also, I am using a windows computer, not a mac, and have never had problems with this iPhone until this new update.

    It is usually given as a communication error between Apple, iTunes (your computer), iPhone. Somewhere they are not communicating, so the iOS you are trying to install cannot be approved by Apple. Trouble shooting steps include, making sure you have Current iTunes installed, make sure your Hosts file of computer is not blocking Apple. Try restoring on another computer.

  • Resizing problems with TestStand OI

    I've attached a number of bitmaps, along with some VIs to better illustrate my problem.  I recently update the Sequence File tab to contain two expression edit (ee) controls to the right of the SequenceView.  One ee is suposed to display the comment contained in the Sequence File properties and the other displays the comment associated with the selected sequence (main or sub).  The sequence file description was already being passed around to a number of VIs so I followed his lead and added references where necessary for the sequence description.
    When the TestStand splash screen shows up, the top level displays and the to ee boxes appear in their desired location.  However, as things start to load, etc, the Sequence File description seems to move underneath the Sequence File description, but they're offset enough that you can see the text (portions) of both.
    Could someone take a look and let me know if you see anything obvious that may be causing this.  P.S. I made significant changes to the Full OI-Resize Controls.vi and minor changes to the other attached files.
    Also, one of the bitmaps (Repeated Error) shows an error I receive every time I try to close my application.

    Problem solved - sort of.  I don't know why these two controls were overlapping, but I ended up moving them underneath the SequenceView control and things worked out much better.

  • Currency Translation Type - Problem with Posting Period (0FISCPER3)

    Hi Gurus,
    We are currently working on an Implementation project in Integrated Planning (BI 7.0) and are having issues with Currency Conversion for each Month. The requirement is that Client will maintain Currency Exchange rates on a month on month basis for Exchange rate type P.
    In all the Info providers we have used Posting Period 0FISCPER3 as a Time characteristic and NOT 0FISCPER ( Fiscal Year / Period ). Eventhough 0FISCPER appears as a Standard time characteristic in all Info providers , we have not even considered the same in all the Aggregation levels.
    When we are now defining a Currency Translation Type thru RSCUR transaction , we select Variable Time Reference as "Beginning of Period" and the ONLY Standard Info Object available there is 0FISCPER and not the Posting Period 0FISCPER3.
    Is there anyway that we can include 0FISCPER3 also as a Standard Info Object !!!!! If not , is there any way out ..... Do we have to include 0FISCPER necessarily as a characteristic in the Aggregation Level ? Please advise.
    Regards,
    Venkat.

    Hi,
    In the IP modeler you can also use the FOX formula for conversion.
    CURC(<amount>, <d>, <exchange rate type>, <curr_from>, <curr_to>)
    This reads the RSCUR table, and you can write your own date from fiscal or calander. So it is most flexibel.
    Maybe this helps.

  • File type problem with email attachments

    Hi,
    I'm using SO_DOCUMENT_SEND_API1 to send email with an attachment. This attachment is a random file uploaded by the user on an ITS web site and sent to my FM.
    It is all working fine as long as I tell SO_DOCUMENT_SEND_API1 that the doc_type is 'PDF'. When I say it's 'JPG' I get an error "Message cannot be processed as it cannot be converted".
    It's not the actual file that is the problem, I can send jpg-images or any other file as long as I say t_packing_list-doc_type   =  'PDF'. However this leads to the attached file being called *.PDF instead of *.JPG, and the receiver has to rename it.
    The relevant code is
      t_packing_list-doc_type   =  ld_format.
      t_packing_list-obj_descr  =  ld_attdescription.
      t_packing_list-obj_name   =  ld_attfilename.
    where
    - ld_format is the file extension (e.g. 'jpg', 'pdf', ...)
    - ld_attdescription = ' ' (1 space)
    - ld_attfilename is the file name without extension (e.g. 'image001')
    My FM has to work with any file extension. It receives the file name and the file extension (jpg, pdf, doc, whatever) as an input parameter along with the file, and I just need to be able to email this file with the originale file name and extension no matter what that extension is. Any suggestions? Tia.

    hi Filip Camerman,
    i am giving you the sample code try this as such.

    it_packing_list-body_start = 1.

  • The type library information for 'TestStand IVI Step Types' was not found (Error code: -18351)

    Hi,
    I get the error in the message subject when I add an IVI-C step (no matter IVI Power Supply, IVI Dmm or others) and try to edit the step by pressing Ctrl+E (or double-click the step and click "Edit IVI Power Supply" for instance).
    I have installed 2 IVI-C libraries that I downloaded from 'NI idnet' both with IVI technology (namely agn330xa_MS.msi and agn6700_MS.msi). They can both be seen in Add/Remove programs under "NI IVI Specific Drivers" group.

    Hi ebalci,
    I believe this error is occurring because the ActiveX components that are used by the IVI step types are either not properly installed or not properly registered.  I would recommend first making sure that the IVI compliance package and NI-VISA are installed on the system.  If both of these are already installed, I would recommend running the TestStand Version Selector because this should re-register the ActiveX components used by the IVI step type.  The TestStand Version Selector can be found by going to the Start Menu>>Programs>>National Instruments>>TestStand 3.5.  You will need to select the version of TestStand you want to use and click the "Make Active" button.  I have also pasted links below to VISA and the IVI compliance package.  Hope this helps!

  • Problems with upgrading interfaces of custom step types

    This question is about configuration management of custom step types.
    Here at Cummins, we have defined our own custom step types (CSTs) using MyTypes.ini. People all over the company use these CSTs in their seq files.
    All these CSTs are calls to individual sequences in a seq file (for simplicity, we'll call this file "Source.seq"). An example CST would be MyStep which calls the sequence MyStep_sequence in the file Source.seq.
    What we want to do going forward is: add one more parameter to the interface of this CST. That means, we will add one more parameter to the sequence MyStep_sequence and then upgrade the definition of the step in MyTypes.ini. We don't want to break existing users, and want the future users of this CST to be able to use this new parameter for newer functionality (ofcourse I did think about creating a new CST all together, but that seemed more maintenance in the future).
    In order to achieve this, my idea was to check mark the box "Use Default" in MyTypes.ini for the new parameter (I propose this because very few of the new users will want to care about this new parameter). At the same time, increment the version number of the step. So now, when an old file is brought up that was using this step, it should be usable just as is without any modifications (ofcourse it will need to be re-saved). When this step is used now by a new person, he will be able to see the new parameter and either not care about it (leave it checked as "Use Default") or pass a desired input to it.
    First question :, does this sound like a good long term approach for maintaining backward compatibility and CM control? Or are there any percieved issues with doing this due to which its recommended to just go ahead and create a new step?
    Second question: this seems to work only if the new parameter is added as a the last parameter in the sequence. if I move things around, (for ex: make this new parameter the first parameter of the sequence), it seems to mess things up. I am okay with making the new interface parameter the last one, but just wanted to throw out this observation I made and see if people had any comments..
    Third question: to make things a little more complex, some of the other sequences in Source.seq also USE MyStep. But I've realized that the only implication this has is, I'll have to open up Source.seq and re-save it beofore I send it out to the users..?

    Hi Anuj,
    Answer 1: Yes, this is a good long term approach in regard to compatibility, maintenance, and control.
    Answer 2: Yes, as of TestStand 4.0 this is expected behavior, as the programmatic reordering of prototypes is not a supported code generation teqnique.
    Answer 3: In short, yes you much open and save every sequence that contains your new CST. Be sure to save your step type first, making sure to increment your version number. This method will ensure that the step type conflict is automatically resolved in files that load this new type. If you forget to increment your version number you will have to manually resolve this conflict.

  • When i run a sequence with ivi step types in simulation mode i get the error code number BFFA0015 - Types do not match.

    When i run the sequence with ivi step types in simulation mode i get the error Types do not mathc. The step that generates this error is an IviScope step type and is configured as a measurement. Th weird thing is that in real mode is working perfectly. I have three measure steps and i get the error in all of them. The exact error message is:

    ) Types do not match. [IVI Error Code: BFFA0015] Source: TSIviStepTypes [Error Code: -30721, User-defined error code.]
    Can someone tell me how to fix this problem?. It seems to me that the simulation generates a diferent type of measurement of that generated in real mode.

    Update:
    The simulation driver appears to be raising the error. By switching to specific driver simulation the error does not occur. This may be a problem in either the class simulation driver or the specific driver.

  • Problems with Custom Data Types when converting from TS 1.0 to 3.0.

    I am currently involved in the process of converting a test environment from TestStand 1.0, LabVIEW 5.1, and Windows NT to TestStand 3.0, LabVIEW 7.0, and Windows XP. We use a custom Operator Interface developed in LV. Based on the entered Model and Serial number, the appropriate Test Sequence is called. We also use a custom Process Model. The steps in the Test Sequence are either LV code modules or DLLs created in C++. We have LV SubVIs and C++ API functions that allow the developers of the test steps to add data to various Custom Data Types. For example, a developer may set up a test to add a note (Step.Result.Notes[x].String) when the test fails. Step.Result.Notes is a container for an array of strings. The attempt to set a note first attempts to use SetDimensions to redimension the array, then SetValString to set the value. These notes are added to the report. On the old system, everything worked fine. A note could be added to any result. On the new system, if a note is added to say the 5th result, but results 1-4 do not have a note, the test sequence ends and the Operator Interface returns to waiting for data entry (as if no test ever happened). No report is generated. The LabVIEW libraries have been modified to solve this problem by calling SetDimensions to incrementally increase the array size by one, and populating the unused TestStand array elements with an empty array of LabVIEW strings using the SetValString call . In other words, based on the previous example, if the user wants to set a note for the 5th result, the notes for results 1-4 must first be sent an empty array of strings. The report will only display the note for Result 5 (as desired). In addition to this being cumbersome, attempting to implement the same workaround in the C++ API has been unsuccessful because even though the note arrays for unwanted notes (1-4) is initialized with nothing, it is still displayed as a note (empty) on the report. If anybody knows what is wrong and what the solution is, it will be appreciated.

    Aaron,
    Thanks for your reply. I will attempt to clarify. I am working with a single step. The step calls a DLL. The DLL performs many 'checks' on the UUT (e.g. Model Number Check, Serial Number Check, Calibration Constants Check, etc.). Under the Type Palette - MyTypes.ini, we have a Step Type called TEST_DLL with a container in it called Results. In the Results container are a number of things, but I will only list the important ones:
    Notes (Array of Type 'Notes'; Type 'Notes' is a Custom Data Type (container, Type Definition)containing an array of strings called 'String')
    -Notes are generally set when on of the checks fails, otherwise no Note is set for the check.
    Val (Array of Type 'Val'; Type 'Val' is Custom Data Type (container, Type Definition) containing a Boolean called 'Boolean')
    -Val indicates whether the check passed of failed
    Pseudocode example:
    //Model Number Check
    check# = 0;
    resultBOOL = ModelNumberCheck();
    SetDimensions("Step.Result.Val", 0, "[0]", check#);
    SetValBoolean("Step.Result.Val[check#].Boolean", 0, resultBOOL);
    if(resultBOOL == FAIL)
    Note# = 0;
    SetDimensions("Step.Result.Notes", 0, "[0]", check#);
    SetDimensions(Step.Result.Notes[check#].String, 0, "[0]", Note#);
    SetValString("Step.Result.Notes[check#].String[Note#]", 0, "Model Number Check failed");
    Note# = 1;
    SetDimensions(Step.Result.Notes[check#].String, 0, "[0]", Note#);
    SetValString("Step.Result.Notes[check#].String[Note#]", 0, "Model Number = 1234");
    //Serial Number Check
    check# = 1;
    resultBOOL = SerialNumberCheck();
    SetDimensions("Step.Result.Val", 0, "[0]", check#);
    SetValBoolean("Step.Result.Val[check#].Boolean", 0, resultBOOL);
    if(resultBOOL == FAIL)
    Note# = 0;
    SetDimensions("Step.Result.Notes", 0, "[0]", check#);
    SetDimensions(Step.Result.Notes[check#].String, 0, "[0]", Note#);
    SetValString("Step.Result.Notes[check#].String[Note#]", 0, "Serial Number does not match expected");
    More Checks
    As you can see above, the "Step.Result.Val" array is redimensioned for every check. The "Step.Result.Notes" array is only redimensioned when a note needs to be added for a failing check. If the entire step executes and no check adds a note, the sequence is fine. If every check fails and therefore every check adds a note, the sequence is fine. However, if there are any gaps (e.g. check 0 adds a note, check 1 does not add a note, and check 2 tries to add a note), the sequence will stop. If I add blank notes for every check that would otherwise not have a note, the sequence completes, but the report shows the blank note.
    Also, the exact code that is causing these problems runs fine on our old systems (TestStand 1.0). I hope that I clarified the problem and thanks again for the help.

  • Know steps names of called sequence file using sequence call step type in TestStand

    Hi,
        I have a problem in accessing step names in called sequence file using "Sequence call"step type in TestStand 4.0.
    I would list out all step names of called sequence file. Is it possible to do through C#.NET? If, yes, Please explain to me in detail with possible example.
    Thank you,
    regards
    RKK

    Hey RKK,
    I want to first set your expectations for the forums.  This is not a place for people to review and rewrite your code for you; this is a place for specific and general questions.  I am not saying your question in this thread is inappropriate, because it is a good questions.  We should just not post code and ask others to fix it here.  If you are looking for this type of service we have alliance members that can help you write your TestStand Operator Interface (www.ni.com/alliance).
    As for you question about getting the sequence names for a sequence file that is not the currently running sequence file, you will need to open a reference to that sequence files and then use the API calls that I mentioned in my previous posts.  You can use the Enigine.GetSequenceFileEx function to open a reference to sequence file, and you will need to close the reference with the Engine.ReleaseSequenceFile function when you are done using it.  After you have a reference to this external Sequence File, you can use the example dll and sequence I previously sent you.  I also attach a new sequence file (SeqFile2.seq) plus an updated GetNames.seq to illustrate how to use the above mentioned functions.  I hope this helps.  Have a great day!
