Still Exception in Thread Main

The error message is as follows (from earlier post)
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: DataWatch/Start
Exception in thread "main"
Everything compiles fine. I have included the code with the correct formatting
I've tried the suggestions from my earlier post but to no avail. This is a sample of what I have...I'll try to make it as precise and short as possible
//generic import calls
public class MainMenu extends JFrame{
public static MainMenu app;
MainMenu(){
//stuff to create a window
//other stuff to finish the class
Then I have this class...it has been renamed since I've posted the original message due to a comment
//generic import calls
public class Start{
public static Start parent;
Start (){} //empty constructor
void init() throws IOException{
MainMenu app = new MainMenu();
public static void main (string args[]) throws IOException{
parent = new Start();
parent.init();
}Part of my class path is: C:\j2sdk1.4.2_03\bin;C:\j2sdk1.4.2_03\jre\bin
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

c:\javapro> java -cp . pack.Foo
Note the lack of "\pack" in the current path.
Classpath contains "." , the current directory. Soit
will look in "." for pack\Foo.class.I will try this when I get back tonight. I will try
to run some small java code today on another machine.
If everything goes good today, then I know it has
something to do with my class path (like you've been
saying). I will then re-install java and go from
there. Do you have any suggestions on what package I
should download? Your help is greatly
appreciated...probably more that you will ever know.
Thanks.If the above works, I don't think you necessarily need to reinstall. It seems that up to this point you and I have each misunderstood certain details of what the other has said.
The above example is nothing special or mysterious. It's the way things should be done all the time, just stripped down to the bare bones simplest case. I (and others here) generally advocate specifying the classpath with the -cp or -classpath arg rather than with the CLASSPATH evnironment variable.
If the above works, then probably your install is fine, and you can build on that. Read some of the below, write some code, ask some questions until you get a better handle on classpath. If you take the above to "the next step" complexity-wise (whatever that would be) and it doesn't work, then maybe you've made a mistake, or maybe there is a problem with your installation. At this point, the latter seems unlkely.
One or more of the following should have some good explanations and examples of how classpath and packages work.

  • HELP Needed with this error:   Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClass

    Folks,
    I am having a problem connecting to my MSDE SQL 2000 DB on a WindowsXP pro. environment. I am learning Java and writing a small test prgm to connect the the database. The code compiles ok, but when I try to execute it i keep getting this error:
    "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Test1"
    I am using the Microsoft jdbc driver and my CLASSPATH is setup correctly, I've also noticed that several people have complained about this error, but have not seen any solutions....can someone help ?
    Here is the one of the test programs that I am using:
    import java.sql.*;
    * Microsoft SQL Server JDBC test program
    public class Test1 {
    public Test1() throws Exception {
    // Get connection
    DriverManager.registerDriver(new
    com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver());
    Connection connection = DriverManager.getConnection(
    "jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://LAPTOP01:1433","sa","sqladmin");
    if (connection != null) {
    System.out.println();
    System.out.println("Successfully connected");
    System.out.println();
    // Meta data
    DatabaseMetaData meta = connection.getMetaData();
    System.out.println("\nDriver Information");
    System.out.println("Driver Name: "
    + meta.getDriverName());
    System.out.println("Driver Version: "
    + meta.getDriverVersion());
    System.out.println("\nDatabase Information ");
    System.out.println("Database Name: "
    + meta.getDatabaseProductName());
    System.out.println("Database Version: "+
    meta.getDatabaseProductVersion());
    } // Test
    public static void main (String args[]) throws Exception {
    Test1 test = new Test1();

    I want to say that there was nothing wrong
    with my classpath config., I am still not sure why
    that didn't work, there is what I did to resolved
    this issue.You can say that all you like but if you are getting NoClassDefFound errors, that's because the class associated with the error is not in your classpath.
    (For future reference: you will find it easier to solve problems if you assume that the problem is your fault, instead of trying to blame something else. It almost always is your fault -- at least that's been my experience.)
    1. I had to set my DB connection protocol to TCP/IP
    (this was not the default), this was done by running
    the
    file "svrnetcn.exe" and then in the SQL Server Network
    Utility window, enable TCP/IP and set the port to
    1433.Irrelevant to the classpath problem.
    2. I then copied all three of the Microsoft JDBC
    driver files to the ..\jre\lib\ext dir of my jdk
    installed dir.The classpath always includes all jar files in this directory. That's why doing that fixed your problem. My bet is that you didn't have the jar file containing the driver in your classpath before, you just had the directory containing that jar file.
    3. Updated my OS path to located these files
    and....BINGO! (that simple)Unnecessary for solving classpath problems.
    4. Took a crash course on JDBC & basic Java and now I
    have created my database, all tables, scripts,
    stored procedures and can read/write and do all kinds
    of neat stuff.All's well that ends well. After a few months you'll wonder what all the fuss was about.

  • Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: oracle.jdbc.dr

    Hi
    I am trying to use type 4 driver to connect to my Oracle 9i Rel2 database. I downloaded the odbc14.jar from oracle and added in the C:\Oracle9i\jdbc\lib path. As on the website, I setup my environment:
    Setting Up Your Environment
    On Win95/Win98/NT:
    - Add [ORACLE_HOME]\jdbc\lib\classes111.zip and
    [ORACLE_HOME]\jdbc\lib\nls_charset11.zip to your CLASSPATH.
    (Add classes12.zip and nls_charset12.zip if JDK 1.2.x or 1.3 is
    used. Add ojdbc14.jar and nls_charset12.zip if JDK 1.4 is used.)
    - Make sure [ORACLE_HOME]\bin is in your PATH.

    i read in this forum about -Xms und Xmx but this Commands don't go on my system.
    thx for help!!!

    Hi Warren,
    Still I am not clear with your question. But generally this out of memoryspace error can be rectified by changing the properties which comes in the menubar of your command prompt. Then increasing the virtual memory over there. I hope this will help you.

  • How to solve this problem"exception in thread "main" java.lang.noclassdeff"

    I am a tyro of java programming .
    i downloaded the j2sdk-1_4_2_09-windows-i586-p.exe from www.java.sun.com and installed it at the defaulted path C:\j2sdk1.4.2_09,
    then i wrote down my first java program as follow:
    public class hello
    public static void main (String args[])
    System.out.println("hello,!");
    }and stored it at C:\Javasmp\ch01\hello.java.
    after that i opened dos commind window and compiled it :
    c:\javac C:\Javasmp\ch01\hello.java. and obtained file hello.class (C:\Javasmp\ch01\hello.class)
    but when running it (c:\java C:\Javasmp\ch01\hello) there was a mistake:
    exception in thread "main"java.lang.noclassdeffounderror:C:\Javasmp\ch01\hello
    i searched on the internet and found out the solution is set enviroment viriable ,so i set the "CLASSPATH" as".;C:\j2sdk1.4.2_09\lib;C:\j2sdk1.4.2_09\lib\tools.jar" ,"PATH" as"C:\j2sdk1.4.2_09\bin;C:\Windows\system32;c:\windows\system32\Wbem" and "JAVA_HOME" as "C:\j2sdk1.4.2_09\bin;C:\j2sdk1.4.2_09\jre\bin"
    afer that, i opened a new dos command window and run it again ,but the problem was still unsolved.
    in addition,my os is "windows xp"

    But unfortunately, by running the code on my local computer, I got an NoInitialContextException (Exception in thread "main" javax.naming.NoInitialContextException: Need to ...Application resource file: java.naming.factory.initial). After searching on the Internet, I discovered I need to configure some JNDI values. But, also after passing on the variables to the class by parameter (-Djava.naming.factory.initial=com.sun.enterprise.naming.SerialInitContextFactory), I still get the same error.
    What have I forgotten? Hope someone can help. Thanks!

    Ashutosh,
    I am not sure weather it will resolve your problem but you can give a try to it.
    If you have the access for tcode "<b>SICF</b>" then
    1. Run tcode SICF, and press F8 button.
    2. default_host>sap>xi.
    3. Now check the below mentioned are activated (activated services will be in black) or not, if not then just right click and activate the service:
         i). adapter_plain
        ii). cache
       iii). cache_gui
        iv). cache_ssl
         v). docu_apperror
        vi). docu_syserror
       vii). engine
      viii). simulation

  • Exception in thread "main" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError(please help me )

    Hi All
    here my java class trying to read a txt file(which is having size of 60MB).and putting each line into a Vector class. problem is ,upto certain number of line it is reading properly and putting into vector..after that it is giving error like Exception in thread "main" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError..what is the problem and how to rectify this one..anybody help me on this.
    actual situation is one txt is there in that 80 lakhs of lines of content is there..java file trying to read each line and put it into vector or stringbuffer and split it into two lines like key=value and put it into hashmap object.then finally iam creating new file(.properties) and writing these hashmap data on it. if you want clearly..please look into below code..
    package test.utf8; import java.io.*; import java.util.*; public class AssetUtils
    //static StringBuffer stringbuffer = new StringBuffer();
    public AssetUtils()
    public static void main(String args[]) throws IOException
    BufferedReader bufferedreader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(new FileInputStream("D:\\list.txt")));
    Vector vector = new Vector(0x30D40, 50000);
    System.out.println(vector.capacity());
    Object obj = null;
    int n=0;
    System.out.println("Reading list:" + new Date(System.currentTimeMillis()));
    do
    String s = bufferedreader.readLine();
    //System.out.println("line no: "+ ++n);
    if(s == null)
    break;
    vector.add(s);
    } while(true);
    System.out.println("List Read complete:" + new Date(System.currentTimeMillis()));
    String s1 = args[0];
    System.out.println("S1: "+s1);
    System.out.println(vector.capacity());
    HashMap hashmap = new HashMap();
    System.out.println( "Vector.Size..>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.."+vector.size());
    for(int i = 0; i < vector.size(); i++)
    System.out.println("i value:"+i);
    String s2 = (String)vector.get(i);
    //System.out.println("S2: "+s2);
    if(s2.indexOf("/") != -1)
    String s3 = s2.substring(s1.length(), s2.length());
    //System.out.println("S3: "+s3);
    if(s3.indexOf("/") != -1) {
    String s4 = s3.substring(0, s3.lastIndexOf("/"));
    //System.out.println("S4: "+s4);
    String s6 = s3.substring(s3.lastIndexOf("/") + 1, s3.length());
    //System.out.println("S6: "+s6);
    StringBuffer stringbuffer=null;
    stringbuffer = new StringBuffer();
    String s8 = (String)hashmap.get(s4);
    //System.out.println("S8: "+s8);
    if(s8 != null) stringbuffer.append(s8 + "," + s6);
    else
    stringbuffer.append(s6);
    hashmap.put(s4, stringbuffer.toString());
    //stringbuffer.delete(0,stringbuffer.length());
    stringbuffer=null;
    System.out.println("Opening asset.properties:" + new Date(System.currentTimeMillis()));
    File file = new File("D:\\asset.properties");
    PrintWriter printwriter = new PrintWriter(new FileOutputStream(file));
    String s5;
    String s7;
    for(Iterator iterator = hashmap.keySet().iterator(); iterator.hasNext(); printwriter.println(s5 + "=" + s7))
    { s5 = (String)iterator.next(); s7 = (String)hashmap.get(s5); } printwriter.close();
    System.out.println("Closing asset.properties:" + new Date(System.currentTimeMillis()));

    Theres a number of ways you can improve your memory usage:
    1) Build you map as you read in your file.
    2) Use StringBuffers in your map - do not use "asshaj" + "ashaskj" This is very memory intensive
    If you still run out of memory try running the JVM using -Xms128m -Xmx512m or higher

    The class the error message is referring to is defined with a SWC that my project links to. However, I've even tried to define a class with that same name (and location) within my project and it still fails to find it.
    Why am I able to Project->Clean and run this project within the desktop AIR player (or on the device in debug mode) but unable to export it as a release build?
    I have found a couple of threads mentioning a similar error but none of them have been marked as resolved.

    At this point I feel I am talking to myself, but I will share my work-around in case it helps another who may stumble across this post.
    In my particular case, both my main AIR application and my ANE wrapper library were referencing the same external Flex library (same revision). Both projects had the library linkage set to merge. Changing the linkage to "External" on one of the 2 libraries (it doesn't seem to matter which) and leaving the other as "Merged into code" enabled the export to complete without the bizarre "Unable to find named traits" error.

    I deleted ListGames.class, ListGames$Games.class, and MysqlConnection.class but still the same thing.Then you didn't delete the version of ListGames.class which is actually being used when you run your application. This suggests that your classpath is pointing to an old version as well as to the version produced currently by the compiler. Or that there's an old version which you put into the Java extensions directory.
