Still no matrix calculations in Numbers

Disappointed that Numbers09 doesn't have matrix operations. Still stuck with excel.

they added over 150 more equations, and implemented dozens of other improvements to the program. Including subtotals, scripting (which is a BIG addition), and much much more. How much do you want in one version upgrade? If not enough people asked for it, then it goes on the list for next time, IF enough people keep asking for it. They DID add the stuff the MOST people asked for.
i.e. Go back and submit feedback again. And have your friends that would like to see it submit feedback.
Hope they got something you wanted in it,
Jason

I have an active creative cloud subscription, yet I am still being asked for serial numbers. How do I proceed?

How did you download the software? For Creative Cloud, you should download from http://creative.adobe.com (which will install through an application called AAM). If you have a trial installation, and bought Creative Cloud, that could be the cause.

  • How fast does Labview perform integer, float and matrix calculations?

What is the speed of a modern CPU? Ok it is 3Ghz, one to four cores etc. but how much work can I get done in one clock cycle at this speed?
This kind of questions have been in the back of my head for some time, so I decided to test it. Of course using Labview since it so easy to to use!
I wrote a really simple program that performed 10000 adds 3 to an 32 bit integer in a loop. It then repeats this until 1000ms has elapsed and calculates the MegaInts (or whatever I should call it). I then did the same thing by adding 3 to a matrix of 10000 32bit ints.
On and dual core 3Ghz PC from 2005 I got 261 Mints in a loop, and 1400 Mints in matrix. Only one core seems to be used, CPU load aorund 50%. So every two clock cycles or so I get some work done in a matrix calculation. Also older 1,8Ghz Celeron computers performs about the same in this test, even though they feel very slow in normal use.
On a newer 4/8 core 2,8Ghz PC from this year I got 830 Mints in a loop, and 5900 Mints in matrix. Only one core seems to be used, CPU load aorund 12%. So actually more than one add per clock cycle!
This indicates that either the compiler is smarter than me and does not to all integer adds, or the CPU is smart and do them very fast!
See this as not the complete benchmark of Labview in integer, float and matrix calculations, but as a teaser to make you do your own tests.
    Play around and have fun!

    That is not true.
A standard loop follows the clumping algorithm during compilation. Clumps can be distributed on any number of threads.
So, a standard loop CAN be distributed between several threads.
There are, however, some settings and structures which will result in a single thread per loop:
    - Setting the calling VI to "subroutine" priority (not recommended)
    - Using a Timed Loop instead of a standard one
    - AFAIK: Containing the loop in an InPlace Element Structure with "Data Value Reference" border nodes
There is at least one additional option, but it is so unlikely (as it messes up with most of LV!) that i will not point it out here.....

Why would we have parallellization options for a loop if it's already multithreaded? I'd love if loops would automatically parallellize.
If you mean the content inside the loop, then it'll follow ordinary optimization and use several threads if possible. In this case OP mentioned 1 cpu was at 100%.

  • Incorrect slope calculations in numbers

    Hi all,
I posted this question before last fall and ended up walking away to just use Excel for the task instead.
Now, I HATE excel. And I still haven't fixed this - so I am going to ask again to see if I can prompt a fix for this or see if Im doing something wrong.
I am looking for the rate of change in data I am collecting for my company - specifically oxygen readings that permeate across a membrane and into a wine bottle.
I have day duration values in the x-axis, and oxygen in milligrams in the y Axis.
If I run the SLOPE(Y,X) I get one number - lets use one of my data series - the function returns 2.143
If I make a scatter plot of the same cells, the equation shows up as 2.481E-5x+2.5404
    Very different numbers.
Using the same set of data in excel I get .089 in both the line equation as well as with the slope function.
The values in numbers niether match each-other, nor match the excel data.
I am tempted to trust the excel numbers because at least they are consistant.
I can email the sample numbers file to someone if they want to take a look at it.
I love how easy numbers is to use - but if it cant do the math right it is no use to me!

    I did a simple test
    X values = 2d , 4d, and 6d formatted as durations in column B
    Y values = 2, 4, 6 in column C
SLOPE function returns 1, which is correct as I see it
Charted linear fit has a slope of 1.157e-5 which means it is converting the days to seconds
I changed the X format to hours.
SLOPE remained as 1, which means it always converts to days.
The charted formula remained the same, which means it always converts to seconds
Going with days as the correct unit, I created a one-celled plain table with the formula
    ="y="&ROUND(SLOPE(Table 1 :: C,Table 1 :: B),4)&"x +"&ROUND(INTERCEPT(Table 1 :: C,Table 1 :: B),4)
and placed it over the chart then unchecked "show equation" for the trendline. I also removed the gridlines from this little table and set the table fill color (which is not the same thing as the cell fill color) to none.
You may want to calculate the slope and intercept in your original table instead of calculating them in the one-cell table. That way you can format the numbers to have trailing zeros (if you want them). Then the formula would be more like
    ="y="&Table 1::D2&"x+"&Table 1::E2

  • Simple math calculation in numbers

Hi I'm trying to do a simple calculation of 46.66*2 in numbers and i get a red triangle saying syntax error. Any light on this as what is wrong.

    Hi Fuija,
Happy to help, and strangely enough, I just got a fresh cup of coffee.
Most issues are easier to solve when enough information is presented. Keep that in mind when you have another question.
As to using , as the decimal separator, it's not a Mac thing. That's dependent on where you live and what regional settings you've made in System Preferences. If you'd normally write ten thousand four hundred twenty-three and five hundredths like this:
    10,423.05
Then your regional settings for numbers should show 1,234.56
and you should use a period as the decimal separator.
If you'd normally write that number this way:
    10.423,05
Then your regional settings for numbers should show 1.234,56
and you should use a comma as the decimal separator.
Pick whichever region is set to use the same separators as you would use when writing the number with pencil on paper.

    Barry

  • Preserving date in time calculations in Numbers

I've scoured the discussion forums and I'm stuck on this one.
When I enter a time in a cell (e.g., '3:00 PM' in A1) and do a calculation using TIME and TIMEVALUE which results in a value in B2, I noticed that the date changes. Without explicitly saying so, the date in A1 defaults to today's date. After doing the calculation, the date in B2 ends up as January 1, 1904. Any idea how the date can be retained, or, even better, completely ignored? The root problem is that when doing conditional formatting on a time value, the date is also taken into consideration. If the date is ignored, my time calcuations would be correct. Since the date is not ignored, my calculations are thrown off by the date constantly being changed back to 1/1/1904.
What I have done as a work around is to enter the original time as '=TIME(5,44,0)', which defaults the date to 1/1/1904. But, it would be nice if I could just enter '5:44:00' and not have to worry about the date component.
Alternately, if the date can be retained in the TIME and TIMEVALUE calculations, it would also solve my problem.

    Jinxed,
I'm not completely clear on your equations, based on your description. It would be better if you would quote your expressions exactly so we could examine them.
If you have a Date/Time value in A and write =TIMEVALUE (A) in B, there will be no date present in B whatsoever, so it won't change. You can still get it from A if you need it and B will contain the fraction of a day represented by the time of day in A.

  • I just upgraded to Lion but still can't buy Pages/Numbers!

I talked to three Apple Experts (online, in store, by phone) and was assured that once I paid $60 to upgrade from my OS X 10.5.8 system to OS X Lion (not Mountain Lion, apparently my system can't handle that one) I would be able to purchase and use the Pages and Numbers apps.
The whole reason I need this is that my Open Office program mashes and skews every Word doc and excel spreadsheet I open from work. I need something that is truly compatible so that I can edit documents at home for work.
I went ahead and bought both Snow Leopard and Lion. I went into the App Store and found something curious: The Pages and Numbers apps went from 9.99 to 19.99 AND when I try to buy them am told that they only work on OS X Mountain Lion. So what's the deal? Was I lied to or is there a secret trick making these programs work?

There are some features that only work in Mountain Lion, but the program itself should run in Lion. The requirements state 10.7.4 is required. Do you have that version of Lion installed?
If so, you need to use the support link on the main Mac App Store page.

I haven't noticed any major problems going back and forth with Word/Pages, but if your goal is as stated, I don't think Pages is the answer. Word is the only thing truly compatible with Word.

  • VAT calculations in numbers

i have summed a column and have a total whcih includes vat which is 20%.
lets say the total with vat is in h64 what is the formula to make h65 just h64 minus 20%
i know this must be obvoius but i've been looking on line in help and cant see the answer
and another easy one! how do i sum a column so the cell is alwys the sum of the column no matter how many more cells are added
ie id the cell formula =a1-a10 when a11 is added the cell is outdated

When I used to use the office calculator to check the totals on my spreadsheets another way of doing it was
    Divide  total h64 by 1.2   ie  = h64 ÷ 1.2
In the olden days when it was 17.5% you divided by 1.175 so this formula can be adapted to any strange VAT rate.

I have reset everything, deleted and tried again. Changed languages, changed regions, and spent hours pouring over posts after post. I read to contact the app developer so here I am.
As a proof things are working, I just downloaded the latest in fear I trust update and the pages app without issue. I still have almost 1.5Gb available.(not sure if it won't download because of this but I doubt it.)

With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • SSRS Matrix Issue. Expression calculating in row with no data.

I have a matrix with multiple column groups for different sales channels. With in each group there are several columns and some with expressions for calculations. The rows are based on sales reps. Now not every sales rep sells in every channel, so there
are some columns in which a rep will have no data. I want them be blank or show a 0. I can do both of those. The issue I am having is in the expressions for reps that have no data, it is still showing a calculation. It seems to populate that cell with whatever
the first result of an actual calculation is. See below. For rep D and E they have no calls or sales in this particular sales channel; however, the closing ratio is showing 30.23% (which is the closing ratio for rep A). I need this to be blank or 0 or N/A,
anything other that a wrong %. I have tried numerous iif and isnothing statements, e.g. =iif(Fields!count_of_customers.Value = 0,0,Fields!count_of_customers.Value/iif(Fields!Calls.Value = 0,1,Fields!Calls.Value)) plus other i have found on the internet
but none of them work. Can someone please help? Sorry it is not a picture of the report. They need to confirm my account before I can attach pictures. But this is the set up of the report.

  • Can i control when ios numbers does calculations?

Calculations on a data entry tab are slowed down by calculations on another tab of a relatively large spreadsheet. Can I turn calculations off on the calculation tab unless I select it?

    Hi LOE,
Numbers '09 (for Mac) has no setting to sut off auto calculation, a feature that slows down documents with large tables. I suspect that's also true for Numbers for iOS, and will request this discussion be transferred to the iWork for iOS community, where you'll likely receive a more certain answer.
To make a request to Apple to include a shut off of auto calculation in Numbers for iOS, use the Feedback channel fo this app. Here's a link: Feedback: Numbers for iOS

      have no success with this:     e33 has 1,  f33 has 2,  g33 has 3.    k22 has 4,  k25 has 5,  k32 has 6.       expecting (1x4) + (2x5) + (3x6) = 4+10+18= 32
        it's the outer product in matrix algebra.     in apl it's 1 2 3 +.x 4 5 6 = 32
how is a random list or range  of  values entered?     thanks.     don mattern

I could be wrong, but I do not believe numbers has the power to make matrix calculations.  I might suggest excel if that is an option.
This is how I would say that you need to do matrix multiplication.  I am going to assume you know all the rules for multiplying matrices.  First you need to have 4 separate tables with no header rows, no footer rows, nor header columns.
I will demonstrate with a (3x3)(3x3).  The first two tables are the Matrices that you are multiplying.
    1
    2
    3
    4
    5
    6
    7
    8

    8
    7
    6
    5
    4
    3
    2
    1
The third is the Transpose of Table 2.  In row 1 column A, place this formula =INDEX(TRANSPOSE(Table 2::$A$1:$C$3),ROW(),COLUMN()), and then fill it all the way out. And this is your result:
    9
    6
    3
    8
    5
    2
    7
    4
    1
Now in the fourth table, in row 1 column A place this formula: =SUMPRODUCT(OFFSET(Table 1::$A$1,ROW()−1,0,1,3),OFFSET(Transpose of Table 2::$A$1,COLUMN()−1,0,1,3)) and fill out to the rest of the table.

This is a slight doozy, but I will explain when I have it written up in a few.

  • Y-intercept calculation problem: "A2:A7" isn't a valid reference

This is actually a problem I have with many calculations in Numbers but I will use the following as an example:
I am trying to calculate the y-intercept and slope for a set of data. Table 1 contains the raw data with each data point in triplicate. In Table 2, column 1 is the ordinate value and column 2 is the abscissa value, which is the average of the triplicates. I would like to place the calculation for the y-intercept in column 3 and the slope in column 4, but always get the error, "A2:A7" isn't a valid reference" for a result. Instead, I have to have a third table for just the y-int and slope. Why isn't A2:A7 a valid reference?

No, I didn't; I only had a 5 rows but I made it 7 rows - so it was a 4 column x 7 row table - and then the formulas worked. The odd thing is that there was still only data in the first 5 rows and, after I set up the formulas, I reduced the table back to 4x7 and the formulas remained unchanged. Thanks for the help.

  • Query: Making pct. calculations on cumulated rows.

    Hi Experts
I have a problem in a query. See the query below. The problem is that column 8 shows the same result as column 7 What I find strange is that column 6 is just right - it shows the YTD-deviation, which I would like to show in pct in culumn 8.
Does anybody know how I can make the %Dev on the YTD numbers in column 8?
    Rows:
    - Calendar month2 (monthnumbers: "1", "2"..."12")
    Columns (Units sold):
    1. Actual Month: current calendar year, billed quantity
    2. Actual Month LY:current calendar year -1, billed quantity
    3. Actual Year To Date: current calendar year, billed quantity (cumulated)
    4. Actual Year To Date LY: current calendar year -1, billed quantity (cumulated)
    5. Dev Month: Actual Month - Actual Month LY
    6. Dev Year To Date: Actual Year To Date - Actual Year To Date LY<b>(OK)</b>
    7. %Dev Month: Actual Month % Actual Month LY
    8. %Dev Year To Date: Actual Year To Date % Actual Year To Date LY<b>(NOT OK)</b>
Kind regards and thanks in advance,
    Torben

    Torben,
The cumulation for the KF is done only in the front end and hence the cumulated value is not available to the OLAp processor and hence you cannot use the cumulated value in another formula.
This basically means that even if you use a cumulated figure in another formula you will still get the calculation on the basic value..
    for example :
    char|Basic Value|CUmulated Value|Cumulated value *2
    A|1|1|2
    A|2|3|4
    A|3|6|6
If you notice row two it is taking the base value into 2 and not the cumulated value..
The only option for the same is to use a macro if the query is in excel or use the table modifier to change the displayed value..
    Arun
    Hope it helps...
