Stopping a infinite loop

I'm trying to write to a file by using a while loop. I read from the keyboard and then enter the while loop. I print to the file and then I read from the keyboard again. My problem is when I want to exit the loop by entering nothing I can't. The loop becomes infinite. Please help!!! Here is my code!!
inputline = keyboard.readLine();//read the keyboard
while ( inputline != null ){
DiskOut.println( inputline );
DiskOut.flush();
inputline = keyboard.readLine();//read the keyboard again
}//end while

They're right...look at the following
public static void doIt5() throws IOException
   BufferedReader stdIn = new BufferedReader(
      new InputStreamReader(System.in) );
   System.out.println( "type stuff...Press only ENTER to quit" );
   String input;
   //                1                    2           3
   while ( (input = stdIn.readLine()).equals("") == false )
      // do your thing...
      System.out.println( "echo: " + input );
      1 ---> assigning input from command line
      2 ---> comparing it to an empty string (if you just press ENTER, it
             will be empty)
      3 ---> however, if something was typed, "input" would be non-empty
   // Same thing with a for loop...
   //              1                       2 & 3                1
   for ( input = stdIn.readLine(); !input.equals(""); input = stdIn.readLine() )
      // do your thing...
      System.out.println( "echo: " + input );

    but seriously, as was suggested, download Darren's Abort.vi. It comes in very handy for these.

  • How to Stop an infinite loop

    I'm reading from the keyboard. I take the input and use it as a while statement's condition. However, I can't break out of the loop once i'm in it. I've tried everything, but nothing works. The loop should terminate after null is returned, but it doesn't. Here is my code:
    inputline = keyboard.readLine();//read the keyboard
    while( inputline = keyboard.readLine() )!= null){
    inputline = keyboard.readLine();//read the keyboard
    System.out.println(" i'm in the loop");
    DiskOut.println( inputline );
    DiskOut.flush();
    inputline = keyboard.readLine();//read the keyboard again
    }//end while
    Also, I have tried this while statement
    while( inputline =="\n" || inputline == "\r" || inputline == null)
    please help!!

    Your code won't even compile. The part between "while" and "{"
    has too many right-parentheses.
    What are "keyboard", "DiskOut", etc.? You'll probably need to provide
    more details, plus the actual code you're trying to debug, before anybody can help you.
    Assuming "inputline" is a String, then that alternative while expression wouldn't work anyway. You can't compare Strings with "==" (at least not in the way you probably mean).
    The following code does something which seems to be roughly what you want:
    import java.io.*;
    public class Foo {
      public static void main(String[] argv) {
        try {
          BufferedReader foo = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));
          String line;
          while((line = foo.readLine()) != null) {
            doSomething(line);
        } catch (IOException e) {
          e.printStackTrace();
      public static void doSomething(String it) {
        // do something here
    }But note that the while loop doesn't end when someone inputs a blank line; it ends when the stream ends, which in this case is when someone inputs EOT (in unix systems, Control-D).
    readLine() doesn't return null on blank lines.
    If that's what you're looking for, then maybe you want to end your while loop when inputline.length() == 0.

  • Stopping a Thread in Infinite Loop

    I've read several articles on how to stop Threads, and all of them point to using Thread.interrupt(). The problem right now is what happens when the thread is in an infinite loop. For example:
    class A implements Runnable
        public void run()
            while(!Thread.currentThread().isInterrupted())
                  while(true);
    //in other class's main method:
    Thread a = new Thread(new A());
    a.start();
    a.interrupt();The a.interrupt() call only sets the isInterrupted flag in Thread, but it does not terminate the thread as a.stop() would. However, stop() throws a ThreadDeath exception that I would not want to have to deal with. Is there any way to stop this infinite loop thread safely?
    Thanks in advance!

    No need to get snitty. You certainly did not make clear that you are not a newbie at programming. Plenty of newbies who barely have a grasp of the language fundamentals post thread questions here. I thought I did address the question at hand. It seems I misunderstood what you were asking.
    The only way to safely stop that inner loop is like so: while (...) {
       while (!done) {
    }where done is volatile, or all access to it is sychronized on the same lock (meaning you'd sync the !done check above as well).
    If you can't do that, and it's stuck at while (true) and you can't modify the body of the inner loop to check done, then you're SOL.
    (I suppose it's conceivable that 1.6 or 6.0 or whatever it's called will introduce some new safe way to stop that thread, but I haven't heard anything about it.)

  • Apple TV 1st gen stuck in infinite loop

    Hi
    This has probably been covered a few times but the only answers I could find was from an archived discussion.
    The other day I was given an Apple TV 1st gen, it had not been used for quite some time, and decided to upgrade the software, when I noticed it still had old pictures and music on from the previous user, not wanting to keep these pictures, I decided to reset the machine to factory settings, which it did, but on the restart it was stuck at a loop giving me a code to enter into iTunes, and then resetting and giving me a different code.
    i've tried several resets of the settings, holding menu and - together, but still having no joy.
    Its never been tampered with, but its really annoying me.
    Can anyone help? this is a very old product so figure something might have been done during this time
    Cheers
    Dave

    sounddave,
    I have been in the middle of the same problem for months.
    I think the problem is with the software version that the older 40GB Apple TV's revert to after the factory restore.  Mine reverted to version 1.0, and that is when the loop started happening.  Since when did a factory restore become a factory paper weight creator!
    I read somewhere that the Apple TV looks at an Apple server and the older software doesn't play well with the updated server causing it to keep rebooting.  I'll try to find a link about this if I can find it again.  I remember reading that it happened to a bunch of people with older Apple TV software on a particular day that Apple upgraded their server.
    If you don't let your Apple TV connect to the internet, it will stop the infinite loop, but it also means you can't upgrade your software.  I haven't tried it yet, but it also might be an issue with newer versions of iTunes.
    I tested this by unplugging my router, and the Apple TV stopped looping.
    I tried to fix this before without success, but I am really determined this time.

  • Neep help with infinite loop! Please Help

    I currently have a program that allows a user to enter a password protected site and it will return all the images on that page.
    Im trying to allow the user to type in the root URL, i.e. http://stage.diabetescontrolforlife.com/ and have the program pull all the images in all of the child directories. i.e. http://stage.diabetescontrolforlife.com/tool.aspx
    I got an inner class similar to the one pulling the <IMG> tag, that pulls the <A> tag. The class adds all the links to a linkList Arraylist. In my main method I call image.getInfo(image.getLinkList()); hoping that I can just pass all the links back through the program and find all the <IMG> tags.
    The problem is that, I get the desired output but it displays in an infinite loop, and the program never ends as it searches linkList over and over for <IMG> tags.
    So, I tried to adding two different Do, While loops.
    Main Method:
    do
                image.getInfo(image.getLinkList());
                test=1;
    }while(test != 1);This one does not change the output. Infinite loop continues.
    Inner Class:
    HTMLEditorKit.ParserCallback callback;
    callback = new HTMLEditorKit.ParserCallback ()
               public void handleStartTag(HTML.Tag tag, MutableAttributeSet attributes, int position)
                            do
                                        if (tag == HTML.Tag.A)
                                                    link = (String)attributes.getAttribute (HTML.Attribute.HREF);
                                                   if(link != null && !link.startsWith("javascript") && !link.startsWith("#") &&        link.startsWith("/"))
                                                                link = root + link;
                                                                linkList.add(link);
                                                               test=1;
                    }while(test!=1);
    public void handleSimpleTag (HTML.Tag tag,MutableAttributeSet aset,int pos)
    {if (tag == HTML.Tag.IMG )This one never allows the first URL to be checked, and the program just sits there.
    Do you see anything Im doing wrong, or anyway I can stop the infinite loop?
    I think the problem is that both of the searching tag classes are inner classes but I dont know how to make them their own classes without messing up the whole password checking.
    Any advice would be helpful!

    HTMLEditorKit.ParserCallback callback;
              callback = new HTMLEditorKit.ParserCallback ()

  • How to Stop Message Driven Beans to go into an infinite loop

    hi,
    Am kiran peddireddy, have the following problem. When i sent a chunk of 50 messages to the MessageDrivenBean, let us say 25 have passed and at the 26th message there was a problem and could not deliver. so, it throws an exception due this the MDB goes into an infinite loop. Can anyone suggest how to stop the MDB from infinite loop. I need help for this ASAP.
    thanks,
    Kiran Peddireddy.

    To Crackers,
    You have to let the container deal with the message - expire/cancel the message after a certain number of tries. This is easy to manage in the WLS console. Which version of Weblogic has this option? 7.0 or 8.1 ?
    I didnt see this option in Weblogic 7.0!!!!!!
    Corect me if I am wrong.

  • Start/Stop Buttons and infinite loop exit

    I am trying to make a GUI with a Start/Stop and an Exit button. Initially the button will have the label "Start". When i push it, its label should become "Stop" and an infinite loop function will begin. I want the loop to run until i press the Stop or Exit button.
    The problem is that when the loop starts i can't press neither of the buttons. The "Start" button changes its label into "Stop" only if i make the loop finite and it ends.

  • Satellite A100-998: Blue Screen error - nv4_disp.dll infinite loop

    I bought this laptop a month ago and I have a serious problem with 3d applications, 3ds max and video games. I receive a blue screen saying

    I downloaded the latest drivers for my nvidia display Forceware 84.68 (GeForce Go 7300, 512ram)from Toshiba but nothing changed. Any suggestions ? What is the problem? the performance is really good until the blue screen appears, so i don't see why this happens...
    The laptop came with windows xp media center edition.
    Thanks in advance.

    Did you ever get an answer? When i took my laptop home, the first thing i did once it was setup was test various 3d programs, because i bought it to do my 3d work on as well as having something mobile for work. I got that stop error, called toshiba and was told to uninstall and reinstall the graphics driver. Sounded like a fob but i did it anyway, and it had no effect. It seems like there's nothing i can do as Nvidia says they don't support it, it's a toshiba problem, and toshiba swears it can't be their fault.
    I used to see it on my desktop (before it went to computer heaven) until i updated the driver (a new one came out), and then i never got it again. From what toshiba tech support told me, it sounds like they won't be updating the driver for the go 7300 as it's regarded as too old? I'm pretty disappointed as my search of reviews of the product never revealed this flaw.
    One person who i talked to advised me to disable Hardware Acceleration, but wihout that i might as well saved money and gotten a cheapy graphics card. The price difference between a notebook with this card and one with the onboard intel type was huge.
    The first notebook i bought had a faulty dvd drive and i returned it for this one. I cringe at the thought of calling toshiba again and having them tell me to return it to them as if it was a hardware failure, when it sounds like a poorly written driver is causing the STOP.

  • Why am I getting an infinite loop?

    I have a for loop that never stops as the question suggests. If the boolean expression is true the loop does not stop. I tried tracing the loop and still cant figure out the solution. Please help. The code where the error is below with comments where the error is encountered:
        public static void printGame()
             //DECLARING
             //User input, height of wall
             int height = 0;
             //User input, how much R2-D2 climbs each day
             int climb;
             //User input, how much R2-D2 slips each day
             int slip;
             //Count of how many days it takes for R2-D2 leaves
             int count = 1;
             //Total after each day which is total + climb - slip
             int total = 0;
             //User input, play again option
             char plyagn;
             //Gameplay
             System.out.println("Please type in the height of the wall");
             //Height input
             height = In.getInt();
             System.out.println("Please type in how much R2-D2 climbs each day");
             //Climb input
             climb = In.getInt();
             System.out.println("Please type in how much R2-D2 slips each day");
             //Slip input
             slip = In.getInt();
             //Evaluation
             for( ; height != total; count++) //<----My ERROR which is an infinite loop that never exits
                  total = total + climb - slip;
                  System.out.println(total); //I tried tracing the error
                  System.out.println(height); //I tried tracing the error
              //Printing the result of the evaluation
             System.out.println("R2-D2 will leave on the " + count + " day");
             System.out.println("Press Enter to continue");
             In.getChar();
             clear();
             System.out.println("Do you want to play again? (y/n)");
             plyagn = In.getChar();
             //If statment, prints appropriate message if or if not to play again
             if(plyagn == 'y' || plyagn == 'Y')
                  printMenu();
             //If n or any other value end program
             else
                  printEnd();
        }//End of printGame method

    Lets say th variables have these values
    height = 10
    climb = 4
    slip = 1 which effectively adds 3 to total at each step.
    So total is 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 etc
    Total will always be not equal to height.
    So change your condition. Also, why are you using a for loop instead of a while loop.Flounder, I was hoping you would answer my question as you always provide good answers. Continuing, I feel so dumb for missing that error. Oh and as for using the for loop instead of a while loop is something i was meaning to change. Anyhow, Thank You.

  • ****How to come out of the  infinite loop by passing a perticular message

    Hi all,
    Can You Pl expalin me in detail "How to come out of the  infinite loop by passing a perticular message in BPM Scenarios"
    Thanks,
    Srinivasa

    Hi Potharaju,
    For this al you need to do is define an IP with two branches. One of the branch receives message of a particular type only. And the other branch is used for stopping the message processing. This is achieved using the correlation. Correlation makes sure that the message of the first type goes to the first branch only and that the message of second type should go to the second branch only. Now when the message of the second type is received, the control comes out of the infinite loop.
    Hope it makesit clear.

    Sanjeev.

  • PL/SQL Function in an infinite Loop, how to destroy?

    Hi,
    My Apex is using a PL/SQL function and there is an infinite loop. How can I stop it so I can recompile the PL/SQL again? Thanks.

    the less obvious is whos session exactly.
    I had the same problem - wrong thinking, wrong loop , visible effects of infinitive loop (statistics of the db) . I was trying to kill sessions of the : user , who owns DAD and a user in who's schema runs nasty plsql code - without efect. Kill was confirmed but there was no change. I was made to reboot my server. Probably there is more efective way to do solve this (in my case - I have solved loop-problem after reebot).
    Would it be better to kill apache session under OS ? (restart it)
    Restart oracle's listner under OS ?
    Some ideas ?

  • Mail step in workflow is in infinite loop.

    Dear All,
           I have created a workflow with deadline monitoring feature.In the workflow created,I have defined a mail step in a loop with loop condition priority = 8 and three minute for deadline.When the workflow gets triggered , the mail step is in infinite loop and as a result the recipient is receiving the mail every three minutes once.
          Now I want to stop the workflow from infinite loop.Please provide me the solution for which I will be grateful.
    Thanks and regards,

  • Empty trash stuck in infinite loop....

    I just upgraded to Mtn Lion and I have a hard drive with time machine back up from a leopard machine, I wanted to delete that, and use the drive with Mtn lion, I put the backups folder into trash and tried to empty it, it is stuck in an infinite loop, the items to delete is in -ve......anybody else seen this? how to recover, if I stop the process, the files are still there...any solutions?

    Stop the process. Remove the files from Trash and put them back on the disk they came from.
    Next, open Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app), choose the hard disk that you were trying to delete the files from. Click the 'Erase' tab and then 'Erase...'.

    Hi, I have a question follow up on this.
    For example:
    I have 5 pages:
    Page 1
    Page 2
    Page 3
    Page 4
    Page 5
    In Page 1, I have an VBA that look like this:
    if something then GoToPage 2
    if otherthing then GoToPage 4.
    But I only want when the page get to Page 3, then this iteration is finished and don't want to keep going to Page 4 and Page 5.
    How do I stop it or restart another iteration, start all over from Page 1?
    I have tried "RSWApp.StopIteration", look up some end, exit, etc, doesn't seems work.
    Thanks
