Storage Grid - One Large Shared ASM Pool

We're looking into options/methods to take advantage of the "storage grid". We want to create a large diskgroup for data and fra and have these accessible to all our lower region servers (dev, qa, ...). These servers are all non-rac and non-clustered.
Is this concept possible without installing Oracle Clusterware?
If clusterware is required, it requires an additional NIC for the private network, since this is a non-production environment we are discussing the possibility to assign both public and private IPs to the same nic (save some hardware $$). Since we'd never failover b/c we are not running RAC, do you see any issues running this way? Or is there another way to share storage between many nodes?

I believe you are going to have to at least cluster the ASM. Each machine sharing the ASM storage will need an ASM instance that contains your large diskgroups.

MS Project Very Slow and Project Files Large when Using Shared Resource Pool

We are using MS Project 2010 Professional in our organization and using a shared resource pool so we can easily identify resource conflicts. When we started this process many months ago the resource pool worked great. Now that we have nearly
all of our projects (~40) using the resource pool, it has become essentially unusable. Each project file that is sharing the resource pool is 12 MB or greater in file size, and most of the project files contain less than 100 lines. Saving any file
takes ~4 minutes. As a result, many of the resource managers and project managers are starting to avoid using MS Project which is undermining our original intent.
Any thoughts on what we could try to regain the usability, make the file sizes smaller, improve save times, etc.? Will MS Project Server fix all of these issues?

If any of your PMs renamed, moved or over-wrote their project file whilst linked to the Resource Pool or a master, then the file may well have corrupted itself or the pool or both. With 40 files, you can guarantee one or more PMs will do one of the above,
so file corruption is a when, not if (2days or 2 years or more).
For 40 projects Project Server or any solution that copies data to a database so the resource data can be consolidated is needed. Project Server is not a simple application, it's a full server and requires proper training and processes to add value. And
it needs configuring by someone who knows what they're doing!
In the mean time try unattaching all project files from the pool, then create a new blank pool and re-attach.You will also need to File, Save as to repair each project file if needed. For bad corruption save as to a .xml format then re-import to a blank
project.
Or, create a new master each time by inserting all projects into a new blank project, but deselecting the Link option. All tasks are then copied and the resource data consolidated. Record a macro to make creating this very quick and easy (provided your network
isn't too slow).

Resource Management of Shared Resource Pool at the Project Level

I am having difficulty figuring out how to implement our resource management process. Currently we have one "Resource Pool" project that has all the shared resources. It is connected to both a "master portfolio" plan that has some task
detail in it and other individual project plans that have their own WBS (for larger projects).
The difficulty arises because we want to do resource allocation at a project level, but the resource usage view shows the WBS/task level detail. I've tried grouping the resources assignments by resource and then project, but since everything is
in the "Resource Pool" project, they all group under that project. I've tried adding the "Project" field and it does show as the source project, but it doesn't group on that field, but rather the "Resource Pool" project
only.
How can I see resource allocation/usage at just the project level so our managers can do planning, negotiation, and re-allocation on a periodic basis with one simple view?
My best current idea is to disconnect all the sub-tasks from the sharer, eliminate the WBS below the project level in the master plan and attach resources at that single line project in that master plan. Then, we would have to manually alter the "Max"
available time in the individual sub-plans as we altered allocations. That essentially disconnects individual plans from both the master plan and the shared resource pool.
Is there a better way?

Yeah, I think there is a better way. Having a linked structure the contains both a pool file and a dynamic master is tenuous enough (i.e. prone to corruption), but if you start disconnecting from the pool and and messing with the master, you will most certainly
invite trouble.
But here is an approach that might work. I tested it on a sample pool file with two sharer files and I think it might give you what you want.
1. First, either manually copy or use VBA to copy the contents of the Project field to a custom text field in each sharer file
2. In the pool file display the Resource Usage view
3. Create a group that first groups on the Resource Name and then on the Text1 field, and select "group assignments, not resource"
4. Change the Text1 group field to be "assignment"
Does that give you what you want?
To help visualize, here is a screenshot of my test file. After grouping I applied a filter to Text1 with the option to also show summary tasks:

I created two Aperture libraries from one large library. Some of the photos I want to keep in library #2 are in the trash of library #1. If I empty the trash of library #1, will it affect the same photos that were moved to library #2? I moved over 2,000 photos to create library #2. Their names are showing in the trash of library #1.

Are your images referenced or managed? If your partial libraries are referencing the same original files as the library you exported them from, be careful. Deleting the orignal on one library #1can delete it from the library #2. But if your originals are managed by Aperture inside the Aperture library, you can delete them.
I moved over 2,000 photos to create library #2. Their names are showing in the trash of library #1.
If you are not sure about referenced or managed, select one of the images you want to keep in the library where they are not in the Trash, then use the command "File > Show in Finder". If you can reveal them in the Finder, they are referenced and probably are shared between your libraries.
Or turn on "badge referenced files" in the Preferences > Appearance settings. Then your referenced images will show arrow badges.

In DS 1.3, is it still a best practice to have one large generic Data Source ? Or is having multiple smaller Data Sources a better solution ?
Minimizing the number of Data Sources remains a golden rule, but what is the best solution :
One large generic Data Source : and using setDataSource
or
Multiple smaller Data Sources : and using Load in Script and Background Processing

It depends on your application and how much the data is pulling in and how you want to present that to the user/consumer of the application.
At TechEd Las Vegas last year, SAP showed a 9 dashboards (3 per row) with background processing for each row.

Is it possible to make OSX see the internal and external HDD's as one large drive? For instance, hypothetically, could I have a Mac Mini Server with 2TB of internal storage and 2 external 4TB Thunderbolt HDD's, and make the OS see them all as one large 10TB drive?

Yes it is possible to do this, but this is not recommended since a disconnection of the external drives would lead to a destabilized system. Its best to do this only with internal drives, or secondarily with only external drives that are set up separately from the boot drive.
However, if you do wish to do this then you can combine any local set of volumes into one large "spanned" hard drive using Apple's CoreStorage volume management service. It does take a few steps to set up and requires use of the Terminal and Disk Utility. I want to delete the row after the display of table control. I have created push button as delete row. If I click on this push button, the selected row should get deleted.

How can I use the print module to print different size images on one large "canvas"? An example would be in Photoshop, go to file>new, and create the size paper I want, and move images of different sizes onto it.
I was thinking the print module would do this automatically for me.

You can't, at present. It's been a requested feature, so we'll see if it shows up in a future version, but it's not there at present.

Would like to mix MP3s into one large music mix..with transitions...

I have seen some OS X mixing programs, but they are mostly for live mixing. I would like a program that I can load in several MP3s...work on the transitions..have the program seamlessly blend them..then export to one large MP3. I have explored Logic Studio and have not found an automated way to do this..so now looking for an external program. Or can Logic do this? Do I need a program?

Sure, Logic can do that. Import all mp3's, put each on a different track, automate your transitions from one into another - volume, eq, verb, anything - and then bounce to one long track. Should be quite easy actually.

Don't know any 'automatic' way - but, i have "Fetch Headers only" set on each of my 'secondary accounts'.
With varying internet service, manual "Get Messages" is probably the "Best Practice" because you will know how good your service is before you even try.
maybe set "Check for new messages every 'n' minutes" to different times

The Photos app doesn't currently support subfolders, it only has the one level of folder/album. You will either need to change your folder structure on your computer to be just one level, see if there is a third-party photo app in the store that copes with subfolders, or just make do. Do you mean the "View" controls are missing in your Toolbar?
To add these controls back to the Toolbar, use the View menu and select "Customize Toolbar". Drag the View Controls back to the Toolbar.

Two small drive or one large drive

Hi All, this is closely related to the previous question but there were some subtleties I wanted to bring up. i was wondering if i could get your take on whether I should get one large drive or two smaller ones. I'm looking to use the external drive as my startup volume. is it true that using a larger drive can actually lower the performance of your computer? I the G3 500 only has one firewire 400 port but it's about time for me to upgrade anyway. the iomega triple interface (black) drives get pretty good reviews so I'm either gonna go for two 250 GB or one 400GB. for safety reasons, i thought that two drives would be better but it turns out that the 400GB has a 8mb cache while the 250GB has only 2mb of cache. is this going to make much difference to the performance of my computer?

• A FireWire drive as a startup disk on a FW 400 port is going to perform slower than your internal hard drive, regardless of the size of the drive. However, you may not notice that much of a difference, other than a slower boot. Cache size will make a bit of difference, but so will rotational speed. You want fast drives (7200 RPM+) and lots of cache (8 MB is nice) for best performance.
• One can find 250 GB FireWire drives with 8 MB cache. I buy all my FireWire drives from Other World Computing (OWC). I've been very happy with the drives and their service. I'd recommend them over Iomega any day of the week.
• One drive vs. two: One drive = all your eggs in one basket. Two FireWire drives gives you the option of having redundant backups on each. Something to consider.

Append PDF files to create one large file

This is what I would like to do:
I have a .rar folder with numerous files in it.
Within the main folder, there are about 10 subfolders.
Each of these subfolders has about 15 PDF documents in them.
I would like to take all 150 (15 PDF's x 10 subfolders) PDF documents and append them into one large PDF document.
They are all in order. How could I accomplish this in LabVIEW?

I made this one a while ago.
Enter the path to the directory containing your pdf files.
Enter a pattern (ex. *.pdf).
Enter a name for the file to be created.
Run the VI. It'll fill the array with the files that match your pattern.
Enter the page numbers from each file that you want in in the output file into the Pages controls.
Hit "Go". It'll build your pdf with the selected pages using pdftk and System Exec.
You'll need to modify it to handle your use-case, but it should be easy (unless .rar indicates you're not working in Windows!)

Do you want to show just 2 rows, one for an "Adjusted AC_41AB" and one for "AC_41ABC"?
If so, could you not just choose AC_41AB and AC_41ABC as the Dimension Members, then create a local member to be the "Adjusted AC_41AB" which is a calculation of AC_41AB minus AC_41ABC. Then you could hide the non-adjusted AC_41AB row so that it's not visible?
If I get a chance I will test it and let you know.
