Stored Procedure VS Programs units VS Attached Libraries

Hi all :)
I would be happy if someone could tell me the difference between Stored procedures and programs units and atached Library in term of efficiency??? because i think that maybe if i convert all my programs units and Library to stored procedura i will gain a lot of time when i access to these procedure via my Forms, am i right please!!!!
Best Regards,
Reda.

Stored procedures work on the database, program units/libraries on the application.
So if you want to do calculations of 10million rows of data do it on the database (as a stored procedure) and pass the results back to Forms.
If you want to do UI interation and application (rather than data) programming you would probably do this in the application as a program unit. (though you can share business logic by putting code in the database).
Its a balancing act - if the code is intensive on on a particular tier (client, application or database) then consider moving the code there.

  • Java Class - Oracle Stored Procedure - ABAP Program

    My client asked me to design a Java Class that calls a Oracle stored procedure. I was a Java developer so I can do that part. Now this Java Class will be called by a ABAP program. All the data that I got from Oracle Stored Procedure should be retuned to the calling ABAP program.
    In the past I did use JCA and SAP Connectors to get data from SAP R3 by calling BAPI programs.
    I would like to know if the ABAP program uses JCO or the latest JCA based SAP Connectors. Any advice on how I should structure my Java Program is welcome. I do know from pure Java side how to get data from Oracle database using JDBC.

    Hi venkat,
    This link(PDF) gives good info about JCO.
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/c63bca90-0201-0010-59ae-e0db32750209
    JCO is used as two way communication between JAVA and R/3. so for yours JCO may be the suitable one.

  • Calling Stored Procedure with parameters from a C program

    Hello, I need to call a PL/SQL stored procedure from a C program.
    Something like this sample program provided by Oracle -
    main()
    int i;
    EXEC SQL BEGIN DECLARE SECTION;
    */* Define type for null-terminated strings. */*
    EXEC SQL TYPE asciz IS STRING(20);

    EXEC SQL VAR job is STRING (21);
    float  salary[10];
    int    done_flag;
    int    array_size;
    int    num_ret;    / number of rows returned */*
    int    SQLCODE;
    EXEC SQL END DECLARE SECTION;
    */* Connect to Oracle. */*
    strcpy(username, "SCOTT");

    The question is - how is the Stored procedure get_employees declared ? Or more specifically, how is the salary parameter declared in get_employees ? Any help is highly appreciated.

    Hope following will help
    NOTE: Not tested
    Calling a stored procedure
    This program connects to ORACLE using the SCOTT/TIGER
    account. The program declares several host arrays, then
    calls a PL/SQL stored procedure (GET_EMPLOYEES in the
    CALLDEMO package) that fills the table OUT parameters. The
    PL/SQL procedure returns up to ASIZE values.
    It keeps calling GET_EMPLOYEES, getting ASIZE arrays
    each time, and printing the values, until all rows have been
    retrieved. GET_EMPLOYEES sets the done_flag to indicate "no
    more data."

    int buf_len, msg_len;
    EXEC SQL WHENEVER SQLERROR CONTINUE;
    buf_len = sizeof(msg);
    sqlglm(msg, &buf_len, &msg_len);
    printf("\nORACLE error detected:");
    printf("\n%.*s \n", msg_len, msg);
    EXEC SQL ROLLBACK WORK RELEASE;
    exit(1);
    Remember, the datatype of each actual parameter must be convertible to the datatype of its corresponding formal parameter. Also, before a stored procedure is exited, all OUT formal parameters must be assigned values. Otherwise, the values of corresponding actual parameters are indeterminate.
    SQLCHECK=SEMANTICS is required when using an anonymous PL/SQL block.

  • Java stored procedures and referencing classes

    We are referencing to some classes/libraries which are not present in the database. In normal java world, you specify the libraries/classes needed to run your piece of code in the CLASSPATH and that forms part of your complete code.
    Can java stored procedures in the database refer to libraries or class files it requires on the file system rather than the database? Is it possible to make this happen?
    Thanks

    pshiva,
    Posting the same question to multiple forums usually doesn't increase your chances of getting an answer, and it just frustrates those wishing to answer you with the result being that any future questions you post may have less chance of being answered -- because of your uncourteous, initial behaviour.
    I have answered your other thread:
    java stored procedures and referencing classes
    In my opinion, that forum (the Database JVM forum) is the most appropriate for your question.

  • Oracle stored Procedure and Packages in CR4E

    Hi,
    I want to use Stored Procedure in CR4E. I don't know how to use Stored Procedures and packages in Crystal Reports for Eclipse. In the data source explorer I can only see the Tables, Views and Stored Procedures but not packages from my Schema and when I can only drag & drop the Tables and Views into the Field Explorer, I can't drag & Drop the Stored Procedures.
    I managed to attached the stored procedure from CR studio. I opened the report in CR4E and I can see the stored procedure and can preview the data. When I try to run the report and override the datasource, it throws oracle error saying "ORA-01008: Not all variables bound". When I tried to use the option

    Please advice if Stored procedures and packages are supported in CR4E ?

    Hi, Jack76,
    According to the [CR4E Release Notes|http://help.sap.com/businessobject/product_guides/cr4E/en/cr4e_relnotes_en.pdf] (available from the [CR4E Download page|http://www.businessobjects.com/campaigns/forms/downloads/crystal/eclipse/datasave.asp]), stored procedures are supported, as long as they don't use parameters that need null values.
    I don't see any references to packages.

  • Form based on Front End (Form based program Unit -Stored Procedure)

    Hi
    I have a form based on a front end package.
    Package spec:
    PACKAGE fpkg_csm_stud IS
    type stud_rec is record
    (s_id student.s_id%type
    ,s_last student.s_last%type
    ,s_first student.s_first%type);
    type stud_ref_cur is ref cursor return stud_rec;
    type stud_rec_tbl is table of stud_rec index by binary_integer;
    procedure sp_student_query(iotb_query IN OUT stud_ref_cur)
    END;
    Package Body
    PACKAGE BODY fpkg_csm_stud IS
    procedure sp_student_query(iotb_query IN OUT stud_ref_cur)is
    begin
         open iotb_query for
              Select s_id
              ,s_first
              ,s_last
              from student;
    end sp_student_query;
    END;
    I have a datablock, STUDENt based on "fpkg_csm_stud.sp_student_query"
    When I query the form I get an error, FRM-40505, on 9iAS.
    However, if I created the same package as a stored database object, and based my form datablock on the database stored procedure everything works fine. I cannot find a reason why.
    I know that forms can be based on front end based procedures OR backend based procs. Dont have a clue here, any help is great.
    Thanks
    Vijay

    Hello Vijay,
    as far as i know there is no way to base a block on a 'front end stored procedure',
    assumed that you mean a package in a library or form.
    But what should be the reason for doing so, or the other way 'round why not just use a database package?

  • Program Units or Call to DB Procedure ?

    Hi
    This is a general query -
    Which method is better - to write db procedures in the program units itself or
    write the procedure in the DB (SQL *PLUS), and then add the call to the procedure in the forms.
    Since, both method can be adopted, which is the better method.
    Thanks
    Deepa

    Hi!
    As a general rule you should put all database I/O into database PL/SQL objects.
    Simply because you limit communication between client and database.
    Put all cursors, all inserts, updates and deletes into database packages. This way you will create a transparent structure of layers in your application: database stuff goes into the database, forms stuff will be in forms (and PL/SQL libraries).
    Good Luck!

  • Java stored procedure vs. PL-SQL vs. external java program

    Hi,
    I'm using a stored procedure for running a query and a few consequent updates. Currently I'm using Java stored procedure for that, which was my choice for simplicity on one hand, and running with the DB on the other.
    In my tests, strangely enough it came out that running as java stored procedure was 3-4 times slower than running as a java program outside the database. I don't know how to explain this, and I wonder if switching to PL/SQL will improve the performance of the code.
    Any experiences? recommendations?
    Thanks,
    Dawg

    In my tests, strangely enough it came out that running as java stored procedure was 3-4 times slower than running as a java program outside the database. I don't know how to explain this, and I wonder if switching to PL/SQL will improve the performance of the code.This isn't strange at all. See: Oracle's JVM (Aurora) is an independent Java Virtual Machine implementation, in accordance to specification. It implements all necessary parts of it (I think so). When you use an external JVM (I assume it's Sun's HotSpot JVM) you use completely different product. It is implemented in different way, it has many different code parts.
    One of the biggest differences between Oracle's JVM and Sun's JVM is [Just-in-Time compiler|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just-in-time_compilation]. Oracle has implemented it only in the 11g version of database, i.e. 2 years ago, while Sun performed it back in 2000 and continues to improve it for the last 9 years. That would explain obvious differences between Java program inside and outside the DB: they are executed in absolutely different worlds. Diffs could be up to 10x times or more - that's not unusual.
    If you are on 10g and want to compare performance of stored Java procedure vs external program, then you might use additional command-line instruction for external program to disable JIT:
    -XintPS. I wouldn't use Java for your task - that's a total overkill. Use simple SP instead.

  • Trigger Unix Program from a stored procedure

    Is it possible to start a Unix program as a background OS process from a stored procedure?
    In fact I want to call a stored procedure which starts a Unix process. After the termination of this process get the results of the programm (a text file) using UTL_FILE package from the stored procedure and produce an HTML document based on the output of the started process using the htp package.

    Whats the best way to start a host (Unix) program from a stored procedure or trigger without having to wait for a response from the program (i.e start it and forget it )The BEST way depends on your operating system and version of the Oracle database. If you are at Oracle 10g or higher, I would certainly suggest using dbms_scheduler. In 10gR2 you can set a program to execute on receipt of an event, and the trigger or stored procedure can be the cause of the event.

    this is becoming a mejor problem for me.And are you storing it as a blob?
    Oracle doesn't take varchars that big.
    And isn't LONG a deprecated field type for Oracle?
    From the Oracle docs......
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B13789_01/server.101/b10759/sql_elements001.htm#sthref164
    Oracle strongly recommends that you convert LONG RAW columns to binary LOB (BLOB) columns. LOB columns are subject to far fewer restrictions than LONG columns. See TO_LOB for more information.

  • How to fetch %ROWTYPE OUT param of  a stored procedure from Java program?

    I have a stored procedure that has IN / OUT parameter as table_name%ROWTYPE.
    From a java program how can I access this ROWTYPE variable?
    I tried all possible documentation and none of the explains whether or not this is supported.
    My use case expect exactly 1 record from the procedure and we would prefer not to use REF CURSOR.
    Is there a way to achieve this? If so, can someone help me with it by posting the sample code to achieve this?
    I tried all the possible OracleTypes to register the OutParameter and they all fail.
    Looks like there isn't any equivalent of %ROWTYPE in OracleTypes either.
    If you need, I can post my sample procedure that uses %ROWTYPE as OUT parameter.
    I really appreciate your help in this regard.
    - Karthik

    Hi,
    If "returning only 1 record" the showstopper for not using Ref Cursor, you might want to reconsider because as you probably know, the ref cursor is only a pointer and requires additional step to retrieve the data.

    qs

    I'm no expert on this, but I have a similar call where I fetch
    an Oracle REF CURSOR from a call to a stored function. If you
    fetch the cursor as an Object from your CallableStatement, you
    can then cast it to a ResultSet e.g.
    mystatement.executeUpdate();
    ResultSet rs = (ResultSet) mystatement.getObject(1);
    Then you should be able to loop through your ResultSet as usual.
    Good luck!
