Strange characters when writing files

I've made a program using a FileWriter. The program is coded and compiled on a Linux PC. I'm using the filewriter to dynamically write HTML-lines. I use "\r" to write returns. On my Linux PC and on my Windows XP sp2 laptop it works fine. On the PC of a friend it does not work correctly. It sees the "\r" as an unknown character. The browser also comments on that (illegal character). She also has Windows XP sp 2 installed running explorer 6. What could be the solution for this problem? Should I recompile on my friends PC? It is strange though. We use the same Java version (1.5).

I don't know why you aren't using a print writer (with a println) method.
Regardless with text files you will always find that they will render correctly on one system and not another because different systems have different line seperators and some software is pretty crappy when it comes to display and gets it's knickers in a knot when it sees line seperators it doesn't like. i.e. Notepad.

    When sending messages from Mail 2.1.2 , some of the recipients get strange characters when opening my messages
    I use a french keyboard with ponctuations that appears to the recipients as black diamond with ponctuation marks in the middle.
    Is it something from my end?

    Here is some info on the problem. Sending plain text instead of rich text is the easiest thing to try.

  • Strange characters when copy/paste from Word

    Hi,
    I have in Word u2018hellou2019 and when I paste it in the Notes of IR and save it, it turns into  018hello 019 so the apostrophes transform into these strange characters.
    I checked with Notepad, Excel and Wordpad and this issue does not occur, only for Word.
    Do you know why this happens ?
    It should be a Word/IE setting as this issue does not occur on a Terminal Server. Only on usersu2019
    workstations.
    Thank you

    Hi Shiva,
    Some styles for font of rich text aren't be kept when I copy the content from Word 2013 and paste into a wiki page from SharePoint 2010/2013(even SharePoint 2007 like this
    post) site as same as yours, it looks like a limitation.
    As a workaround, we can publish the Word content as a Blog article in SharePoint site, then copy the content from the blog page to the needed SharePoint page, it will keep the rich text content format, you can have a try.

  • Intermittent FileNotFoundException exception when writing files

    OS: Windows
    JRE 1.3.1
    I have an application that tries to write files to an existing folder (overwriting the files that are already there). This code is run very often at my site, and Ive never had a problem. At some customer sites, we get an intermittent exception:
    java.io.FileNotFoundException (Cannot create a file when that file already exists).
    Each time it is run and the exception occurs, a different file takes the hit. Sometimes running against one folder works and against another doesnt, on the same machine. I dont think file protections are an issue (if I try to reproduce the problem by marking a file to be written over as read-only, I get an access denied exception on that file consistently).
    Of course, it is intermittent at just a few sites, and I cant reproduce it myself.
    Im wondering if it is possible that some other process (say a virus scan or back-up utility) is temporarily locking files in a way such that when I do my FileOutputStream.write() I catch this exception. Has anyone seen or heard of anything like this?
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Are you sure you are not accidently trying to open an output stream on a directory? From the API docs:
    FileOutputStream
    public FileOutputStream(File file)
                     throws FileNotFoundExceptionCreates a file output stream to write to the file represented by the specified File object. A new FileDescriptor object is created to represent this file connection.
    First, if there is a security manager, its checkWrite method is called with the path represented by the file argument as its argument.
    If the file exists but is a directory rather than a regular file, does not exist but cannot be created, or cannot be opened for any other reason then a FileNotFoundException is thrown.
    Parameters:
    file - the file to be opened for writing.
    Throws:
    FileNotFoundException - if the file exists but is a directory rather than a regular file, does not exist but cannot be created, or cannot be opened for any other reason
    SecurityException - if a security manager exists and its checkWrite method denies write access to the file.
    See Also:
    File.getPath(), SecurityException, SecurityManager.checkWrite(java.lang.String)Note the case where a FileNotFoundException will be thrown.

  • Strange problem when copying files to NAS

    Hello all. I have a strange problem when trying to copy files from my intel iMac to my Seagate NAS. I am copying files from my HD and when the file is nearly copyied i get an error message saying that the file can't be copied because it is already in use by another application. Well... it surely isn't. I try copying them by ftp (Filezilla) and everything works fine. I can then access them through my media server but !!!! NOT THROUGH MY iMac!!!! It is like the files are not there!!!! But they definetely are! I tried fixing the disk permissions, rebooting NAS, iMac etc but nothing seems to solve the problem. Is there any suggestion of what might be wrong? I am under Mavericks and i am pretty sure that the problem started after the update. When copying from my external USB hard drive to my iMac HD everything works fine. The problem is from my iMac to my NAS.

  • Extra characters when writing to file

    Hello,
    I'm currently working on a datalogging system using XP and 8.2. Our program monitors CAN messages, saves values to local variables, and records to a text file based on several inputs from the front panel (file location, ms delay, and write ratio of fast update to slow update parameters). In the interest of saving disk space some variable are only written every "Write Ratio" times the fast variables are recorded.
    The file creation works fine, and the write to file works fairly well, but I get garbage characters at the beginning of most lines. You can see in the attached text file there is an extra "J" before my header (not a big deal) but there is also an extra character at the beginning of each line. Usually it's a square, but on lines which will eventually write all the variables it fluctuates between a space, ", or !. I've also gotten files with a * or ). Any idea why I'm getting these? My gut instinct says it's caused by the Write Counter >= Write Ratio Case structure or the EOL constant in the main concatenate strings. I've tried changing both the EOL constant and the false case write string with the same problems.
    While I've got the sample posted, is there a better way to implement my traveled distance function? The sequence structure seems...inelegant in this case. I could post my entire prototype VI if that would help, but I'm a bit secretive of its contents and simultaneously ashamed at its ham-handedness.
    Thanks
    Mark

    Tbob,
    Did you try saving the .txt file to your hard drive then opening from there in notepad?  Doing a open in new window from the browser gave me a blank screen, but saving the file and opening in notepad worked and looked like the attached.
    Mark,
    I don't know about the J.  But at the beginning of most lines in the .txt file I see a square.  Doing a copy and paste into a string constant in labview, then converting it from normal display to hex display,  it is the Hex character 13 which is decimal 19 or a Ctrl-S or DC3.  Maybe that will help you find the problem.
    One thing that is kind of odd about your write VI is that you are converting all the numbers to strings, but you are feeding that into a Write to Binary file VI rather than to a Write to Text file VI.  I bet that may be the source of the problem.
    Edit:  This may also explain why your "text" files are quite showing up in the browser.

  • Replacing Special Characters when writing to a file

    I am using the following to replace Muñoz  (the ñ with null) .  It should output as Muoz.
    This should be simple but it is not working.  209 and 241 represent the upper and lower case ñ.
    This statement is in a CFFILE.  I am generating the file but the ñ is still there.
    replace(LGL_NM,chr(209)&chr(241),'3','all')
    I also tried the following without success:
    <cfset x = ReplaceNoCase(#Object_query.LGL_NM#,"#chr(209)#", " ", "all")>
    <cfset LGL_NM = ReplaceNoCase(x,"#chr(241)#", " ", "all")>
    Please Help.
    Thanks!
    Bill

    I mean on the page itself, in the meta tag.  Not sure if it's what's causing the difference though.

  • Strange thing when moving files

    Since upgrading to lion have had no problems but today a really strange thing happened when moving a file by drag and drop to a usb stick.
    Dragged and dropped the file no problem then dropped the stick to unmount it.
    Removed the stick ok, then when looking at the desktop the stick was still there and the file was still over the stick.
    The only way i could get rid of these ghost files was to reboot.
    It happened everytime i did this
    Any idea what maybe happening.
    I tried to drag and drop the ghost files in the bin but they would not move

    Hi,
    this sounds like a customer support case. I am not sure this can be solved on the forum unless some other users have the same problem and know how to work around it. If this is due to a platform bug then the only solution is customer support to get this fixed.

  • ORA-29283 when writing file to server

    I am trying to setup procedure that writes the result of a query to a file on the database server. I am currently testing the writing of file using some generic code.
    The database is on Red Hat Linux. The directory was created on the server as the mfts_user account and the oracle user granted read/write access. This was verified by logging into the server as oracle and creating a file via "touch test.txt".
    The following 2 procedures/functions were created to test utl_file:
    create or replace FUNCTION dump_csv ( p_query IN VARCHAR2
    , p_separator IN VARCHAR2 DEFAULT ','
    , p_dir IN VARCHAR2
    , p_filename IN VARCHAR2)
    RETURN NUMBER
    AS
    l_output utl_file.file_type;
    l_thecursor INTEGER DEFAULT dbms_sql.open_cursor;
    l_columnvalue VARCHAR2(2000);
    l_status INTEGER;
    l_colcnt NUMBER DEFAULT 0;
    l_separator VARCHAR2(10) DEFAULT '';
    l_cnt NUMBER DEFAULT 0;
    BEGIN
    l_output := utl_file.fopen(p_dir, p_filename, 'w');
    dbms_sql.parse(l_thecursor, p_query, dbms_sql.native);
    FOR i IN 1 .. 255
    LOOP
    BEGIN
    dbms_sql.define_column(l_thecursor, i, l_columnvalue, 2000);
    l_colcnt := i;
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN others
    THEN
    IF(SQLCODE = -1007) THEN
    EXIT;
    ELSE
    RAISE;
    END IF;
    END;
    END LOOP;
    dbms_sql.define_column(l_thecursor, 1, l_columnvalue, 2000);
    l_status := dbms_sql.EXECUTE(l_thecursor);
    LOOP
    EXIT WHEN(dbms_sql.fetch_rows(l_thecursor) <= 0);
    l_separator := '';
    FOR i IN 1 .. l_colcnt
    LOOP
    dbms_sql.column_value(l_thecursor, i, l_columnvalue);
    utl_file.put(l_output, l_separator || l_columnvalue);
    l_separator := p_separator;
    END LOOP;
    utl_file.new_line(l_output);
    l_cnt := l_cnt + 1;
    END LOOP;
    dbms_sql.close_cursor(l_thecursor);
    utl_file.fclose(l_output);
    RETURN l_cnt;
    END dump_csv;
    create or replace PROCEDURE TEST_DUMP_CSV
    AS
    l_count NUMBER;
    l_fn VARCHAR2(30);
    BEGIN
    SELECT TO_CHAR(SYSDATE,'YYYYMMDDHH24MISS') INTO l_fn FROM DUAL;
    l_count := dump_csv( p_query => 'select * from coreq',
    p_separator => ',',
    p_dir => 'OUTBOUND_NEW_DIR',
    p_filename => 'dump_csv' || l_fn || '.csv' );
    dbms_output.put_line( to_char(l_count) || ' rows extracted to file dump_csv' || l_fn || '.csv.' );
    END TEST_DUMP_CSV;
    To test utl_file, I execute as the MAXIMO user:
    CREATE OR REPLACE DIRECTORY outbound_new_dir AS '/home/mfts_user/Maximo/outbound_new';
    select dump_csv('select * from coreq', ',', 'OUTBOUND_NEW_DIR', 'dump_csv.csv' ) from dual;
    Here is the error I get:
    ORA-29283: invalid file operation
    ORA-06515: at "SYS.UTL_FILE", line 449
    ORA-29283: invalid file operation
    ORA-06512: at "MAXIMO.DUMP_CSV", line 15
    ORA-06512: at line 1
    This same setup works on Windows XP when logged in as an Admin user, which tells me that the syntax and logic is correct.
    What could be wrong with the Linux setup?

    Yes. I read that read/write is automatically granted to the user that creates the DIRECTORY object.
    The result of the query you gave was 2 records:
    GRANTOR GRANTEE TABLE_SCHEMA TABLE_NAME PRIVILEGE GRANTABLE HIERARCHY
    SYS     MAXIMO     SYS     OUTBOUND_NEW_DIR     READ     YES     NO
    SYS     MAXIMO     SYS     OUTBOUND_NEW_DIR     WRITE     YES     NO

  • Strange characters in downloaded file names

    Everytime I download a file that has a space or some kind of accent in it's name, I get some bizarre characters. For instance I get a %20% instead of every space in the file name...
    I guess it's an encoding problem but I haven't been able to find what the cause of the problem is or how to fix it. I've tried changing the default encoding in the Preference but doesn't change anything. I also tried to change the Language in the International System Preference panel, with no results.
    I've had this problem forever, but it's really frustrating to get this with what is supposed to be the most advanced operating system in the world. I've been bragging to my PC friends (well, they're not really friends, more like acquaintances) since 1984 about having no problems with accents, spaces, etc. in file names... and now...
    Please help.

    Everytime I download a file that has a space or some
    kind of accent in it's name, I get some bizarre
    characters. For instance I get a %20% instead of
    every space in the file name...
    It's not an encoding or language problem. Spaces are not allowed in urls, they must be replaced by %20, which is the escaped Unicode value for that character. Many servers do not accept spaces in the names of uploaded files, so the people uploading them delete spaces or replace them by underscores. But some servers do accept spaces in uploads and then replace them by %20. The same goes for accented characters.
    I don't think that there is anything unusual about what you are seeing, or that there is anything you can do about it.

  • Photoshop 5.1 strange crashes when opening files

    Hi there
    I'd be grateful for any help with the following scenario:
    I'm using Win 7 64bit, and have run Photoshop 64bit CS4 without issue since first owning the computer (2 years or so), along with the rest of CS4 Productions Studio etc; I've now upgraded to CS5.5 Production Studio
    Now using Photoshop 5.1 64bit, I'm having trouble with Photoshop crashing when opening certain files - I get the 'Photoshop has stopped responding' windows message.
    The problem is intermittent - but when it happens, re-oppening Photoshop and then trying to open the same file causes Photoshop to crash again, in the same way, over and over.  The workaround seems to be that if you open several files at once, including the one that Photoshop crashed while openig, the files load ok - but this doesn't always work.
    I've disabled openGL drawing in Photoshop, I have no 3rd party plugins installed, I've turned off all scratch disks except the C: drive, and I've tried loading the files from different hard drives, without effect.  Once openned, I've re-saved the files in different loactions wih different names, to no effect.
    I've also had a 'DDE Server Window:Photoshop.exe Application Error message a couple of times when closing Photoshop
    There was also a day a couple of weeks back when workig on a particular file that contained a complex text layout, Photoshop 5.1 would repeatedly crash when trying to use the type tool - I have used a 'font fixer' program to check the fidelity of my fonts, and they're fine
    Overall, given the amount I've actually used 5.1 since I installed it, it seems very unstable - not what I've come to expect from Photoshop at all (I've been using it since version 3.0)
    If anyone could shed some light on any of this, and how I might get Photoshop stable like CS4 was, that would be really great, otherwise I'm going to have to step back a version
    Thanks
    Jon

    A good possibility is that the latest version of Photoshop is demanding things of your display driver that it hasn't been asked to do before.  Display driver updates do solve a LOT of issues...  I suggest you visit the web site of the maker of your video card and see if they offer an updated display driver you can download and install.
    Your mention of the type tool issues implies a possibly corrupted or badly formed font.   Chris Cox just the other day shared a neat link to a handy font troubleshooting page...  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/843/cpsid_84363.html
    Lastly, it never hurts to set all Photoshop preferences back to defaults and then reconfigure only the things you know you need to change...  Do this by pressing and holding Control - Shift - Alt when cold-starting Photoshop.  You have to be very quick, and if you're quick enough Photoshop will prompt you to confirm the deletion of the current preferences.
    Good luck!
    -Noel
    P.S., At the moment, on my system Photoshop CS5 seems very stable.  I had some periods of instability, and display driver updates from ATI seem to have solved that completely.  Currently I'm using Catalyst 11.9, which may be interesting to you if you're using an ATI card.

  • Strange characters appearing in File Info

    Using Adobe Bridge CS5 to caption images, I enter metadata into the desired fields (copyright, description etc) but upon opening the same images on a PC running Photoshop CS2 some of the text is converted to garbage. This seems to happen when using quotation marks and copyright symbols.
    EG: My original line of text typed into CS5 might read, John said: "Hello, nice day"
    But in CS2 on the PC it reads, John said:  â?oHello, nice dayâ?
    And the copyright symbol changes from this,
    © Fred Bloggs
    to
    © Fred Bloggs
    Does anyone know why this is happening and if there's any way of preventing it?
    THANKS

    Try setting your NLS_LANG variable to the characterset the data was created in. Doing this allows Oracle to properly convert the data. Assuming this data was created on a Windows computer, I'll assume the codepage on that computer is 1252. You can verify this by looking in the registry settings. If the codepage is 1252, then you need to set your NLS_LANG = AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8MSWIN1252. Even if you copy the file to a UNIX server before loading the data into the database. It's simply a matter of letting the database know what language you are speaking in so it can properly translate it. Now, if the characterset of the database does not contain that character's code, you would still end up with the inverted '?'.
    I hope this helps.
