String draw size, in a linux command environment

I need to get the string length as it displays on screen (for image generation). First i did this through a simple php script but i discovered that the standard method in php is way off by 200 +pixels. Thus i would  like to know if i can get the string draw size through java in the command environment. Or if there are other ways to get the size plz tell me i really need a sollution to this php bug.
Of course i tried to dig into the font class but it uses the X11 graphics which aren't available
any help is welcom

if you install the linux server as command prompt the X11 graphics (windows) arn't installed / started thus the java graphics awt is useless for it uses the X11 server
anyway i'll look into the font measuring for i'm getting wierd deviation in the counts of to scripts:
script 1 php based (first try)
1783 newwidth for str 2064 Fred Tanja
1806 newwidth for str 2064 <|>
1979 newwidth for str 2064 Plaats hier je bericht!
2002 newwidth for str 2064 <|>
2120 newwidth for str 2064 Martijn marcel
script 2 java based
1689 newwidth for str2064 Fred Tanja
1713 newwidth for str2064 <|>
1872 newwidth for str2064 Plaats hier je bericht!
1895 newwidth for str2064 <|>
2009 newwidth for str2064 Martijn marcel
see the wierd deviation of 120 pixels? the lengths where both gotten with php's imagepsbox (in java by calling an exernal script)
i just can't seem to figure out what is wrong it's the same string same font same size (those are read from the same config file ) anyway i'll get a clear head and try again tomorrow maybe its in the derived font

    can anybody help me to solve one problem i have.
    i want to capture the output of linux command "grep" in my java programme.but it is not working properly .(maybe this sub-process doesn't have permission to read files)

    Your code is probably good to run a program, that does not use terminal capabilities.
    Program "top" is a little bit more complicated - you have to run it with a real terminal.
    Try to run "xterm -e top". You can find an example how to run an external program
    from java code in cnd/gdb module on http://cnd.netbeans.org
    For example, take a look at openExternalProgramIOWindow() method on this page:
    http://cnd.netbeans.org/source/browse/cnd/gdb/src/org/netbeans/modules/cnd/debugger/gdb/proxy/Attic/GdbProxyCL.java?rev=1.1.2.6.2.5&only_with_tag=release551_fixes&view=markup
    It runs a command with external terminal.
    Thanks,

    I would expect error messages to be output on stderr not stdout and you only read stdout. You should read, digest and implement the recommendations in http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-12-2000/jw-1229-traps.html .

  • Executing a linux command through flash lite

    Hello All,
    i want to know one thing.. : is it possible to execute a linux command through flash lite?
    I mean, say, in linux at the command prompt if i want to change the date and time then i will execute command date 082110452009.00 to set
    21 August 2009, 11:45:00 .. i want to do this through actionscript2.. first i wil provide a UI asking the user to set date, time, year.. once he clicks OK i want to execute the above command with the user input..
    This is because currently i m running this application on an embedded linux device which doesn't have a real time clock.. i mean once i switch off and ON the device the date and time will set back to default value 01 Jan 1970 as it happens in linux..
    any suggestions?

    get the the inputStream of the runtime object after executing the command.
    now use the readLine() function until it becomes null.
    egs: with reference to ur code.
    InputStream is=p.getInputStream()
    while(is!=null)
    String s=is.readLine();
    if the command don't execute try giving the full path also like /sbin/ls -l

    Hi Nick,
    Thankx a lot, for suggestion,
    I wanted to make a page which gives me a text box to write a command and below it shows the result of that command,
    Say , I m in directory "/home/dhiraj"
    and I write in command text box : "pwd"
    it should give me the currrent path in result , which I can show in form of HTML as Results ,
    (may be in a String form..)
    same way if I write in command box : "ls -l"
    it should Return me (say a String) the directory listing of the current path in result,
    I have already tried the Runtime & Process class ,
    Runtime rt = Runtime.getRuntime();
    Process p =null;
    p = rt.exec("command here");
    p.waitFor();
    it has following problems:
    1) This way I m not able to get the result ..
    2) I tried to make a zip file via my program it did not threw any exception , but could not execute...
    I was confused is it 'coz of permission ( rights problem) or some programmatical error as the same program runs via a Java Class file ..
    desperately waiting for ur suggestions

  • Arch Linux Netboot Environment under grub legacy

    I am trying to boot under grub legacy with the following menu.lst entry:

    Indeed - more information is needed.
    What is your partitioning scheme, is sda6 your /boot parition?  Are your kernel and intrd in /boot/grub/?  This would be unusual, but it is what that entry implies.  Also, where is your root partition specified?
    You also don't need the boot command in the menu.lst.  I don't know if it would cause a problem, but I've never seen it there.  In addition to the links in cfr's signature, you should (have already) read the wiki page on grub legacy.

  • Executing sudo linux commands through a JSP page.

    Hi,
    I need to execute some superuser commands through a JSP page under Linux.
    I added users apache and tomcat to the /etc/sudoers file with no password prompting.
    My JSP page works fine with any usual linux command, but when I call a “sudo cmd” I have a message (when reading the ErrorStream instead of the InputStream) that “sudo can’t be executed because it needs a tty” even when I call the shell before the sudo command.
    Here is a piece of my code (very basic):
    String cmd="linux_cmd";
    Process proc = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd);
    InputStream stdin = proc.getInputStream();
    InputStreamReader isr = new InputStreamReader(stdin);
    BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(isr);
    String line = null;
    while ( (line = br.readLine()) != null)
    out.println(line);
    Is there any way I can make sudo calls from a JSP page ?
    I know that making root calls from a web application is a bad thing, but for now security is not my concern.
    Thank you for any tips.

    In fact, I help supervising a student project who is supposed to write an admin application to offert graphical interfaces for some security and system tools under Linux (like fdisk, iptables etc) using J2EE, ... something like Webmin.
    As I said, I know that is has a huge security risk but this app has the only purpose of learning J2EE, no security issues are treated.If you want to say "I will leave my office door open because there's no security risk in doing that" then that's a valid statement. But what you are trying to do here isn't the equivalent of leaving your office door open. It's the equivalent of finding a master key for all the offices in the world. And as such it is in fact a serious security risk which should not be circumvented.
    And no, it's no good saying "But I'm only going to use this all-powerful master key to open my own office door". If you get the key then anybody else can get the key too.

  • Invoke a linux command from with in a java servlet

    Hi Everyone,
    I am kind of new to Linux and Tomcat server technology. I have been trying to run a servlet that would run a linux command using the "Runtime.getRuntime().exec( cmd );" in java. I tried running the command in an independent Java Program and it runs fine. I am trying to do the same thing in a servlet so that I could invoke and execute the linux command when I invoke a servlet URL. But it does not seem to work. I mean the servlet program compiles well and prints all the html text but the command does not get executed. It does not give any error messages either. The program is as follws:
    public class Example1 extends HttpServlet {
    public void doGet(HttpServletRequest request,
    HttpServletResponse response)
    throws IOException, ServletException
    PrintWriter output;
         response.setContentType ("text/html");
         output = response.getWriter();
         StringBuffer buf = new StringBuffer();
         buf.append ("<html>");
         buf.append ("<head>");
         buf.append ("<title>\n");
         buf.append ("A Simple Servlet Example \n");
         buf.append ("</title>");
         buf.append ("</head>");
         buf.append ("<body>\n");
         buf.append ("Welcome to Servlets in SSL Command \n");
         buf.append ("</body>");
         buf.append ("</html>");
         System.out.println("Hello Linux");
         String cmd = "";
         cmd = "cp file1.txt file2.txt";
         System.out.println(cmd);
         try
              Runtime.getRuntime().exec( cmd );
         catch( java.io.IOException e )
              System.out.println("\n " + e.toString());
         output.println(buf.toString());
         output.close();
    do you have any suggestions reagarding this. Thx in Advance.
    Regards
    nsk

    Read this before you do anything with Runtime.exec:
    http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-12-2000/jw-1229-traps.html
    I agree with Annie: it's a bad idea to put code like this in a servlet. Move it into a JavaBean that you can test off-line and then let your serlvet simply instantiate it and call its methods.
    This will tie your app into Linux, of course. Sure you absolutely have to do this? Write an interface and a factory method to hide this implementation detail. It'll give you a chance to chance implementations if you ever have to deploy on Windoze or something else.
    Merry Christmas, Annie. Don't spend the day at the forum, as helpful as you are.

  • Sending down Linux commands from database

    Hello
    Im working with Oracle 10.2.0.4.3 on Linux SuSE FUSE Version 2.3.0-RC0-SL0/SLES-9.
    Im currently doing an extract of BLOB files down to a directory on the server.
    When I do the extract the Oracle user becomes the owner of the files and my own user doesn't have the access (neither read or write) to the files.
    I cannot receive Oracle access due a security issue so Im wondering if its possible to send down a command from the database that does a
    $chmod a+rw my_directory/*.* ?
    Iv looked into the some forums and I didnt find anything in particulate that would help me, so Im wondering if any of you know if this is possible ?
    BR / SA

    Hello
    Thank you for your advice but the question was to send down Linux commands from the DB, not do anything in the Linux enviroment.
    Here is a good place to start that I found on the net.
    public class JShellCommand {
    public static int execute(String cmd) {
    try
    String[] shellCmd = { "/bin/sh", "-c", cmd };
    Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(shellCmd);
    int exitVal = process.waitFor();
    return (exitVal);
    catch (Exception e)
    return 1;
    load it into db with loadjava and wrap it with:
    CREATE OR REPLACE
    FUNCTION Shell_Command(
    p_CMD IN VARCHAR2
    RETURN NUMBER
    AS
    LANGUAGE JAVA
    NAME 'JShellCommand.execute(java.lang.String) return int';
    For OS command you can use:
    public class JCommand {
    public static int execute(String cmd) {
    try
    Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd);
    int exitVal = process.waitFor();
    return (exitVal);
    catch (Exception e)
    return 1;
    and
    CREATE OR REPLACE
    FUNCTION OS_Command(
    p_Cmd IN VARCHAR2
    RETURN NUMBER
    AS LANGUAGE JAVA
    NAME 'JCommand.execute(java.lang.String) return int';

    Hi All,
    An empty .txt file has to be created in FTP location(FTP loc c:\xyz\Customer20082910.txt) only after the .dat file has been created(FTP loc c:\xyz\Customer20082910.dat)
    Note:.dat has the actual data and .txt is an empty file and is created only after .dat is created
    I know that .txt empty file can be created using the After Message Processing Command Line...
    But confused which command to be given such that it will be created in the FTP location(c:\xyz\Customer20082910.txt)
    Can any one please give the Linux command for it...

    Hi Aamir,
    Thanks for the suggestion, I will ask my client to create a shell script at FTP server...
    And one more question,
    This is reverse side , now the .dat file is to be picked only if .txt exists at the FTP server (scenario File > XI>SAP) (earlier was SAP>XI>File)..
    So please can you suggest for this also...
    How can i check for the .txt and pick corresponding .dat file...
    i had posted question long back
    Need to pick .TXT file only if .CTL file is available

    Perhaps you can do the following:
    Go to Google.
    Type "working Linux command to grep date range in a log file"
    See what results you might get from that search.  ( I did, and got more than 600,000 search results.)
