String "&nbsp" crap in 'Java' style code post

<mx:Image xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" initialize="init()">
<mx:Script>

public function init():void {
this.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, loaded);
private function loaded(e:Event):void {
this.width = this.contentWidth;
this.height = this.contentHeight;

</mx:Script>
</mx:Image>
Let's see if this bug repeats itself... there should be &nbsp strings in the above pasted text instead of spaces (now, watch it work correctly this time..). Doing an EDIT of the post replaced them with spaces when I originally posted. So to insert readable 'Java' syntax code, I guess we have to post and then update the post to remove the Jive droppings that this crap forum inserted. (pathetic, Jive...pathetic)

Kath-H wrote:
I'm sure they haven't really thought about it. I've thought for a long time that users here are not typical Jive users. At all. Adobe didn't think this through when picking new forum software.
They didn't think anything through.
Jive was selected for its pretty face and has totally failed to provide the forum experience needed for a user-to-user support service.
Dual log-in was decided upon because it seemed like a good idea, but wasn't.
I could go on, but would rather not become another Ansury or Jhabrix.

• Java style and coding conventions

Hello All,
Most of my programming experience is in Java, and as such, I try to conform to the style and coding conventions that are used in all of the Sun tutorials, and to my understanding, the specification. I'm enrolled in my final semester of a bachelor's of computer science and engineering, and one of my courses is "Software Engineering". Our course assignment is to make a website, written in PHP. I don't really care for PHP, so I volunteered for the Code Quality Assurance team, thinking, I'm fairly consistent when it comes to adhering to the Java conventions, it should be reasonable to determine similar conventions for this project, and give my classmates pointers on how to improve the readability and layout of their source listings.
The problem is, my professor, absolutely, whole-heartedly hates Java. He despises everything about it. For example, I sent him a source listing that I felt was well written, readable, and adequately documented. Some of the things that I was "doing wrong" were:
1. Naming Conventions
All of the Classes were first-letter capitalized, subsequent first-letter of each word capitalized. FormLayoutManager was one particular example. All instance or primitive identifiers were first-letter lowercase, subsequent first-letter capitalized, so an instance of FormLayoutManager could be formLayoutManager, or menuLayoutManager, etc. All constants were all capitals, with underscores separating each word. MAXIMUM_POWER. All methods were first-letter lowercase, subsequent first-letter capitalized, showLoginComponents().
My Professor insists that the convention I (and most of the Java community as far as I can see) is terribly unreadable, and that all instances variables and method names be first-letter capitalized. I tried explaining that this sacrifices the ability to easily distinguish between a class type or interface, and an instance, and was ignored.
2. Declaration and Initialization
Also, supposedly declaring a local identifier and initializing it in the same line is some sort of abomination of everything sacred in programming. So I found myself constantly doing things like
public String info() {
StringBuilder info;
info = new StringBuilder(512);
// append a bunch of information to info
return info.toString();
}3. 80 Character line widths
He wants me to break any statement that is over 80 characters in width into multiple lines. I know a long statement wrapping around in your editor is a irritating, but 80 characters, seriously, who doesn't have an editor that can't handle more than 80 characters on a line?
4. this and argument names
In most of my constructors that accept arguments, I would usually do something like
public Student(String name, int age) {
this.name = name;
this.age = age;
}Which he thinks is horribly confusing, and should be
public Student(String n, int a) {
name = n;
age = a;
}5. singular collections / arrays identifiers
I had something like:
String[] keywords= new String[] { "new", "delete", "save", "quit" };
for (int i = 0; i < keywords.length; i++) {
System.out.println(keywords);
And he insisted that "keywords" be renamed "keyword", as in, the i-th keyword, which I think is kind of stupid because the array is an array of keywords, and having a singular identifier makes that less obvious.
It's driving me crazy. It's driving everyone else in the class crazy because they're all mostly used to Java style conventions as well. I've tried pleading my case and I can't even get him to acknowledge the benefits of the "alternative" styles that I've used in my programs up to this point.
Have any of you had to deal with either professors or bosses who have this type of attitude, whether it be towards Java or any other language? This guy has been involved with computer science for a while. I think he's used to Pascal (which I know nearly nothing about). You will find people who will disagree about this stuff all the time. I had a similar course and we read "Code Complete" which offers some style suggestions. Fortunately, my professor was intelligent enough to allow a discussion of these styles and I had a chance to argue against the "bracket every if statement" idea and other little things I didn't agree with. It was insightful conversation, rather than a "I'm the professor, you're a student, so listen to me".
Here's the important part: It doesn't matter what the standard is, only that there is one.
Unless I misunderstand, he allowed you to take on the responsibility of QA, so it is ultimately your decision. If the project suffers because of poor quality of code, it will be on your head. If, on the other hand, you give in to him and use a style that makes no sense and the project suffers because of poor code, it will still be on your head.
So he really has no position in this because he is not a stakeholder in this decision. Tell him that this is your responsibility and you need to make the choices that are right for your group, not right for him. If he's teaching you anything that can reasonably be called software engineering, he should understand that. Otherwise he's just teaching out of a book called "Software Engineering" and doesn't know anything (or so it seems from this small window you've given us).
caveat: If he's reviewing the code and he's particularly snarky about his "styles", you might want to consider giving in to his demands for the sake of your grade. Sad reality.

OracleResultSet ors = (OracleResultSet) stmt.executeQuery("select rowId from t where t.col = 'XX'");
// The above query could return multiple rowIds.
String strVal1 = null;
String strVal2 = null;
if(ors.next())
strVal1 = ors.getROWID(1).stringValue();
if(ors.next())
strVal2 = ors.getROWID(1).stringValue();
ArrayList strList = new ArrayList();
strList.add(strVal1);
strList.add(strVal2);
Now I need to pass a list of rowId's from Java to PLSQL function f().
oracle.sql.ARRAY rowListArr = convertArrayListToRowPointerList(strList, conn) ;
OracleCallableStatement cstmt = (OracleCallableStatement)
cstmt.prepareCall("begin f(?); end;");
cstmt.setObject(1, rowListArr);
cstmt.execute();
where:-
static oracle.sql.ARRAY convertArrayListToRowPointerList(ArrayList arr, Connection conn)
throws SQLException {
oracle.sql.ArrayDescriptor stDesc = ArrayDescriptor.createDescriptor
("DBUSER.ROWPOINTERLIST", conn);
oracle.sql.Datum[] keyVals= new oracle.sql.Datum[arr.size()];
for(int i = 0; i < arr.size(); i++) {
keyVals[i] = new oracle.sql.CHAR((String) arr.get(i),
oracle.sql.CHAR.DEFAULT_CHARSET);
oracle.sql.ARRAY keyArr = new oracle.sql.ARRAY(stDesc, conn, keyVals);
return keyArr;
and
create or replace type DBUSER.ROWPOINTERLIST as table of varchar2(4000);
Will there be NLS issues in the above code, where I pass the rowId content
that I obtain from one query, as array of string bind variables to a subsequent PLSQL procedure? --- first approach
Or
do I need to pass the rowId list , as a array of oracle.sql.ROWID via bind variables? -- second approach
The problem I have in second approach is that in the DB we cannot define a type as a table of ROWID's. So currently I have RowPointerList as a table of varchar2's (note the length of list of rowId is not predetermined in my case, so I user table instead of varray).
However I was wondering if the first approach will have any NLS issues.
Will appreciate your comments.
Thanks

ROWIDs are represented as either hex-encoded values or base64 encoded values. Both encodings use pure ASCII, so there should be no NLS issues.
I am not very familiar with the oracle.sql.ARRAY type, but unless absolutely necessary, I would avoid the oracle.sql.CHAR datatype (assuming 10g drivers). Using java.lang.String is preferred.

• Protecting java source code

I heard about the possibilty of decompiling the java code and getting back the source code, is this flaw specific to java or is it common among all programming langauges?
how is it possible to protect the source code? and how expensive is the solution?
thank you

Back to poster: To my knowledge, the ability tode-compile back to valid source code is unique to
Java.
No it's not. Any program files can be decompiledback
to source code.
If not their original C or C++ code, then at least
assembly code.You cannot decompile C or C++ code to anything but
assembler language. Which even when written by a good
programmer is considered obfuscated by others. I
doubt that anyone has lifted C or C++ code from
another application using a decompiler.yes you can, all binaries can be reverse compiled, logically speaking they have to be!
However, the readability of the output is not going to be as high as that obtained from decompiled java.
>
I would say that de-compilation is not a flaw in Javawhen compared to
powerful features it has to offer. Of course it's a flaw (so I disagree with you here).
People don't want this behavior, but it exists. As I
stated earlier (and I'm agreeing with you on this
one), it was an issue of priorites, and the
developers of Java decided that it was OK because it
allowed "powerful features"...it is a feature - whether it is a desirable feature is another argument entirely.
>
Here's a list of projects where the developers arenot interested in
hiding the source code from you, in fact they let youhave it for free:
Notice the words developers, not software companies.
I believe in open source and participate in it when
not bound by non-disclosure which is 99% of the time.
But I would stand by my statement that there are no
o software companies selling retail software that
believe the ability to decompile Java back to Java
source code is OK or good for them in anyway. I would
gently suggest that providing open source code, and
providing the ability to decompile to source code
really don't belong in the same discussion...Protecting code is not the job of programmers, it is the job of the Law.
rob,

• For ESS - Travel ABAP WD do we need to deploy the Java WD code in the EHP

We currently have ESS - Trips and Expenses Java WD version. We are in the process of implementing the ABAP WD for Trips and Expenses.
According to the documentation at
http://help.sap.com/erp2005_ehp_04/helpdata/EN/46/95288c46f619ace10000000a11466f/content.htm
if we turn on the Travel Management (FIN_TRAVEL_1) business function Java WD should stop working. We turned on the business function but our Java WD is still working. The buttons (Create Expense Report, Copy, Change, Delete, Display Form) on the My Trips and Expenses ABAP WD version do not work.
We have not deployed the Java WD code that was in the EHP. Is it required?
Thanks.

Hi All,

1. In the interface [1] not the implementation[2] have u defined the method test?
2. If it is implemented, Change the bundle version in bnd file and make a new build. Then from felix console verify the latest version reflected in the bundles.
If 2 works & you are going to make lot of frequent changes then give the version as snapshot till it get stable.

• Using File I/O to Reformat Java Source Code

Encountered another problem. Essentially, I have to create code that will take a file formatted with next-line braces and convert it to end-of-line braces. I thought of changing the delimiter (from /p(javaWhitespace)+ to "\\r") so that I can catch the next-line braces.
My dummy code remains intact in the second file, except for ugly squares where my carriage return used to be (when opened in Notepad), or no change at all (when opened in NetBeans).
Question: any suggestions on a better delimiter? Or maybe the replace() arguments should be changed?
public class ReformattingJavaCode {
public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
java.io.File file1 = new java.io.File(args[0]);
java.io.File file2 = new java.io.File(args[1]);
java.util.Scanner input = new java.util.Scanner(file1);
//Change default delimiter to carriage return to catch next-line brace
input.useDelimiter("\\r");
String output = "";
while (input.hasNext()) {
String firstString = input.next();
//Replace next-line brace with end-of-line brace
firstString.replace("\\r{", " {");
output += firstString;
java.io.PrintWriter outputFile = new java.io.PrintWriter(file2);
outputFile.print(output);
input.close();
outputFile.close();
}Thanks for all your help.

public class ReformattingJavaCode {
public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
java.io.File file1 = new java.io.File(args[0]);
java.io.File file2 = new java.io.File(args[1]);
java.util.Scanner input = new java.util.Scanner(file1);
//Change default delimiter to carriage return to catch next-line brace
input.useDelimiter("\\u000D");
String output = "";
while (input.hasNext()) {
String firstString = input.next();
//Replace next-line brace with end-of-line brace
firstString.replace("\\u000D\\u007B", "\\u0020\\u007B");
output += firstString;
java.io.PrintWriter outputFile = new java.io.PrintWriter(file2);
outputFile.print(output);
input.close();
outputFile.close();
}I just made a very minor correction to my code - specifying the delimiter as a carriage return in unicode, and so forth.
For most of the other I/O exercises in Prof. Liang's book, I don't seem to have a problem translating them into code. I'm still wondering why my code doesn't output correctly. Thanks for the patience.

• Java Source Code to UML Class Diagram

Can anyone tell me exactly which kinds of relationships may be identified for a UML CLass diagram, directly from 'static' source code..
Note that I am developing my own case tool which will convert from java to uml..
At the moment, I have only managed to get Inheritance and Association relationships..
Where Association is identified by looking at the types of all variables belonging to a class (excluding method variables etc) and if the type of the variable is non-primitive, than I have deduced it is an association relationship with that class.
Would this be the right approach?
Secondly I have noticed in JBuilder, it models dependency relationships by getting all the Imports at the top of the java source file, is this right?? also I have read that a dependency can be modelled by the variable types in operation arguments (paremeterS ?)..
I would also appreciate if someone could clarify the difference betweeen Composition and Aggregation for me and explain if it is possible to identify the two relationships directly from java source code..
Last but not least, what about multiplicity ? am I right in thinking that an instance variable is 0-1, an array declaration is seen as 0-n (fixed number) and a Vector/ data collection.. is seen as 0 - * (any number)..
Thanks for any help,
Regards
Tony.

although this post is way old it could do with a decent answer.
some guidance can be taken from JSR26: UML Mapping for EJB
find it a www.jcp.org
also this research paper on consistency of reverse engineering between uml tools
http://citeseer.nj.nec.com/545406.html
Where Association is identified by looking at the types of all variables belonging >to a class (excluding method variables etc) and if the type of the variable is >non-primitive, than I have deduced it is an association relationship with that >class.
Would this be the right approach?Yes. You could also say that if it is a java.* type then it would also be an attribute.
Secondly I have noticed in JBuilder, it models dependency relationships by getting >all the Imports at the top of the java source file, is this right?? also I have >read that a dependency can be modelled by the variable types in operation >arguments (paremeterS ?)..JBuilder would be consistent with JSR26, and that's how i intend to implement in ArgoUml.
I would also appreciate if someone could clarify the difference betweeen >Composition and Aggregation for me and explain if it is possible to identify the >two relationships directly from java source code..Composition is a stronger form of ownership. the composed class is owned only by 1 class. Its lifetime is strongly linked to its owner - ie. it is not created before its owner and it is destroyed before its owner is.
eg. leg of a table.
Agregation is weak ownership. the owned class may be owned by several classes.
eg. a company is owned by many shareholders.
Last but not least, what about multiplicity ? am I right in thinking that an >instance variable is 0-1, an array declaration is seen as 0-n (fixed number) and a >Vector/ data collection.. is seen as 0 - * (any number)..sound right.

• How to read the Java source code (in Netbeans)

I use OS X10.5.5, NetBeans 6.1 and JSE 6 on a 64 bit mac.
When I downloaded NB6.1 it had JSE 5 as it's default (and only) java platform. I ran Software Update to get Java 6 from Apple, used the Java Prefrences utitlity to set JSE6 as default. In NB I added the JDK6 platform, registered the JDK6 javadocs and noticed that I also have the option of registering the Java source code.
I have three questions:
1) How do I make JDK6 the default in NetBeans. The JDK5 keeps being default after I did the steps above and I don't see anywhere to change that.
2) How do I read the Java 6 source code? I can see sun provides [source code| http://download.java.net/jdk6/] for their supported platforms. I dont see Apple doing the same for its JDK port. What would I need to do to get to read the java SE6 sources? or is it actually hiding somewhere in the /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Home hierarchy?
3) Where does the JVM look for the binary code to run when I make a call to, say java.util.ArrayList or any other library. In my naivety I would have assumed it would be a .class file somewhere in the java Home folder, but I don't see anything like it.
thanks in advance,
chris

This is taken from the help included with netbeans. In response to question 1.
By default, the IDE uses the version of the Java SE platform (JDK) with which the IDE runs as the default Java platform
for compilation, execution, and debugging. You can view your IDE's JDK version by choosing Help > About and clicking the
Detail tab. The JDK version is listed in the Java field.
You can run the IDE with a different JDK version by starting the IDE with the --jdkhome jdk-home-dir switch on the command line
or in your IDE-HOME/etc/netbeans.conf file. For more information, see IDE Startup Parameters.
In the IDE, you can register multiple Java platforms and attach Javadoc and source code to each platform. For example, if you
want to work with the new features introduced in JDK 5.0, you would either run the IDE on JDK 5.0 or register JDK 5.0 as a
platform and attach the source code and Javadoc to the platform.
In , you can switch the target JDK in the Project Properties dialog box. In , you have to set the target JDK in the Ant script itself,
then specify the source/binary format in the Project Properties dialog box.
To register a new Java platform:
Choose Tools > Java Platforms from the main window.
Click New Platform and select the directory that contains the Java platform. Java platform directories are marked with a
in the file chooser.
Use the Sources and Javadoc tabs to attach Javadoc documentation and source code for debugging to the platform.
Click Close.
To set the default Java platform for a standard project:
Right-click the project's root node in the Projects window and choose Properties.
In the Project Properties dialog box, select the Libraries node in the left pane.
Choose the desired Java platform in the Java Platform combo box.
Switching the target JDK for a standard project does the following:
Offers the new target JDK's classes for code completion.
If available, displays the target JDK's source code and Javadoc documentation.
Uses the target JDK's executables (javac and java) to compile and execute your application.
Compiles your source code against the target JDK's libraries.
If you want to register additional Java platforms with the IDE, you can do so by clicking the Manage Platforms button.
Then click the Add Platform button and navigate to the desired platform.
To set the target Java platform for a free-form project:
In your Ant script, set the target JDK as desired in the javac, java, and javadoc tasks.
Right-click the project's root node in the Projects window and choose Properties.
In the Sources panel, set the level of JDK you want your application to be run on in the Source/Binary Format combo box.
When you access Javadoc or source code for JDK classes, the IDE searches the Java platforms registered in the
Java Platform Manager for a platform with a matching version number. If no matching platform is found, the IDE's default platform is used instead.

• BAPI_ACC_DOCUMENT_POST- Cross Company-Code Posting problem

Hi,
I am using BAPI_ACC_DOCUMENT_POST in a program to post a GL document.
The program works fine for single company code posting.
For cross company-code posting, i.e. when my upload file contain more
than 3 company code,
The document gets posted and uploaded in SAP but the posting result i.e
for clearing accounts is incorrect.(clearing accounts of post in company is not generated)
FYI, There is no error message returned from BAPI.
Am I possible to do this with bapi, so I have to split my doc and post

• Cross company code posting

hi
while posting cross company code posting in F-02 for customer,the open item is not cleared
ex: com.code:1000 have customer debit balance
the customer paid to com.code 2000
in f-02, 40 bank in com.code:2000
15 cus. in com.code:1000 has been taken in new com.code option
but open item is not cleared?
how can i post?
next in company code 1000- 2000 company balance will be there and same com.code 2000 also will have 1000 com.code balance , how can i clear this
regard
sowmya

you can use F-30 for the clearing at the same time as the posting.
But it may be better to have the repsonsible person in the customer's company to do the clearing, so he/she knows the payment has been received (although in the same company).
Current accounts between companies should be "cleared" at regular intervals. ie. offsett asset & liabitily side. It's a business decision on when to clear the balances.

You could use Google. I know, it means you need to do some research yourself. But an exe will only work on a Windows platform. Try looking for a tutorial on jar files instead.

• Error in compiling java source code in a package

hi all...
am having a problem in compiling a java source code:
i have a class named 'Test' in the package 'packone'....
i have another class named 'getTest' in the same package....
in the class getTest i am taking a reference to Test class...
on compiling i am getting the following error....
cannot resolve symbol
symbol : class Test
The source code for the two classes are :
package packone;
public class Test{
and
package packone;
public class getTest{
public void me(){
Test t = new Test();
i have included the directory path in the classpath....
still its not compiling .....
please help
thanks....

Assume the current directory structure:
C:\
C:\packone...and that your classes are named Test & GetTest.
My guess is that you're compiling within the directory C:\packone using the command "javac GetTest.java", which is wrong; You must use a path corresponding to the package-name.
Move your command-line cursor to C:\ and type "javac packone\GetTest.java" and you'll be fine...
