String to byte[] help...please?

this might be a very easy task for you guys..but not for me....
please tell me how to convert a string to byte[] ????
i need to retrieve a string from a db. the data i need to retrieve is encode (base 64). that is why i need to use Base64() of rg.apache.commons.codec.binary..
please help me...any ideas will be very much appreciated....

A cursory search of "Free Java Base64 Decoder" got exactly what you are looking for on the first hit.

  • Why is the problem? String Manipulation. Help Please.

    Ok I have two while loops that run with two different String arrays. The problem that I have is that I have a String LeadPI that looks like this: "Dr. Ayusman Sen, Pennsylvania State University".
    I would like to separate the String where the first half "Dr. Ayusman Sen" = String investigator; and "Pennsylvania State University" = String institution;
    basically separate the string into two separate String variables.
    can I do this in 1 while loop, and why is my output not functioning correctly?
    Lead PI: Dr. Ayusman Sen, Pennsylvania State University //*** String to manipulate***//
    // what the output should look like.
    Institution: Pennsylvania State University //*** this should be institution ***//
    Investigator: Dr. Ayusman Sen //*** this should be investigator ***//
    // This is the current output!
    Institution: Dr. Ayusman Sen
    Institution: Pennsylvania State University //*** this should be institution ***//

    Cheers!
    One of the problems with the String's split method is that it will nto handle the spaces properly. You will still need to trim it.
    In the class, below, I have coded for you two methods that will do what you are asking for.
    The first method (split) uses the String's split method, but then has to go through and trim down the strings to remove the space after the comma.
    The second method, tokenize, does the same thing, but uses a string tokenizer.
    Both work - I was just trying to illustrate both methods. The tokenizer method is about three times faster than the split method (in my tests) - but the split method is a little cleaner (IMHO) - but we're talking sub-millisecond differences in one execution.
    You would get the name from the [0] index of the returned String array and the institution from the [1] index, like so:
    System.out.println( "Name: " + info[ 0 ] );
    System.out.println( "Institution: " + info[ 1 ] );There are some issues with this code... if there is a comma in the institution name or the person's name, if messes things up - if, for example, the persons' name is "Paul Leska, Jr." - the routine splits the string in between Leska and Jr.
    The same thing happens in the institution name - if, for example, the name of the place is "University of Minnesota, Duluth" - we tokenize or split between Minnesota and Duluth.
    You'll either need to (1) watch your data, (2) make these routines smarter or (3) Change your input to already be split (from the source, perhaps).
    Here's the code:
    import java.util.StringTokenizer;
    public class Splitter {
      public static String[] split( String s, char c ) {
        String[] chopped = s.split(String.valueOf( c ));
        for( int idx = 0; idx < chopped.length; idx++ ) {
          chopped[ idx ] = chopped[ idx ].trim();
        return chopped;
      public static String[] tokenize( String s, char c ) {
        StringTokenizer st = new StringTokenizer( s, String.valueOf( c ) );
        int count = st.countTokens();
        String[] chopped = new String[ count ];
        for( int idx = 0; idx < count; idx++ ) {
          chopped[ idx ] = st.nextToken().trim();
        return chopped;
      public static void main( String[] args ) {
        String[] info = tokenize( "Michael A. Riecken, Jumping Mouse Software", ',' );
        for( int idx = 0; idx < info.length; idx++ ) {
          System.out.println( info[idx] );
        info = split( "Michael A. Riecken, Jumping Mouse Software", ',' );
        for( int idx = 0; idx < info.length; idx++ ) {
          System.out.println( info[idx] );
    }

  • Comparing Strings with "If" statements : help please. :-)

    I have an assignment for class... and having lots of trouble trying to figure out what I did wrong. I cannot find a solution.. if anyone can help me with this, it'd be much appreciated.
    Assignment Write a program to allow the user to calculate the area and perimeter of a square, or the area and circumference of a circle, or the area of a triangle.
    To do this, the user will enter one of the following characters: S, C, or T. The program should then ask the user for the appropriate information in order to make the calculation, and should display the results of the calculation. See the example program execution shown in class.
    The program should use dialog boxes.
    When expecting an S, C, or T, the program should reject other characters with an appropriate message.
    Get extra points for allowing both the uppercase and lowercase versions of a valid character to work. Name the program ShapesCalc.java.My error codes are

    I will convert the == to equals() method.If you want to compare primitives (ints, chars etc) then using == is fine. Only when comparing objects do you use the equals method.

  • Cannot publish from iWeb to .Mac, Help please!

    I am trying to publish to my site from here in Australia. I was able to publish in the country at the beggining of the trip, but can not now. I get the message "Publish Error - an error occurred while publishing file /Web/Site/iWeb/Site/Blog". I had updated two blog entries and changed the date on an entry. Since then in trying to fix the issue I deleted both of those entries. I have been through .mac support troubleshooting steps to ensure it is not a network error. I have been able to publish to a folder, but when I try to copy the Blog folder from that folder to my iDisk I get "The Finder cannont complete the operation because some data in "" could not be read or written (Error code -36)". Since then they asked that I try to publish from a trial .Mac account or from a new OS X user account on my machine. Both of those attempts failed as well, which they say indicates it's not a .mac account or OS X user set up issue. They asked that I put a copy of my domain file out in the public drive for them to look at, but when I try to do that it goes through and does the copying and then freezes at "Copying Domain.zip to Public, Copied 599.5MB of 599.5MB (Closing file...) - Please wait". Then I get the same error code -36 and am disconnected from iweb. Can anyone out there help please?
    Thanks!

    Thanks and Merry Christmas to you too! I have experienced both modem/network problems and was unable to publish in Tahiti and Cook Islands because of that and now these problems which have nothing to do with network it seems - so yours may or may not be network related. I was able to cheat and copied my "Site" folder from my hard drive to my iDisk rather then publishing. I can't remember if you've tried this or not (read a lot of strings today) but you can publish to a folder and then copy that folder to your iDisk at /Web/Sites/iWeb/Site as "Site" after first renaming the one that is out there now. Let me know if you have any questions on how to do it. It sounds like you are traveling like we are and anxious to communicate with friends and family back home. When you are bored, our site is web.mac.com/baganworldtour.
    At least we now have our first update out there in two weeks. But it took almost two hours to copy the folder and this won't work forever. Hopefully we, whether by the discussion room or .mac support next week, will be able to fix the problem for real.
    Thanks. Good Luck. Merry Christmas

  • How to get a string or byte array representation of an Image/BufferedImage?

    I have a java.awt.Image object that I want to transfer to a server application (.NET) through a http post request.
    To do that I would like to encode the Image to jpeg format and convert it to a string or byte array to be able to send it in a way that the receiver application (.NET) could handle. So, I've tried to do like this.
    private void send(Image image) {
        int width = image.getWidth(null);
        int height = image.getHeight(null);
        try {
            BufferedImage buffImage = new BufferedImage(width, height, BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_RGB);
            ImageIcon imageIcon = new ImageIcon(image);
            ImageObserver observer = imageIcon.getImageObserver();
            buffImage.getGraphics().setColor(new Color(255, 255, 255));
            buffImage.getGraphics().fillRect(0, 0, width, height);
            buffImage.getGraphics().drawImage(imageIcon.getImage(), 0, 0, observer);
            ByteArrayOutputStream stream = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
            JPEGImageEncoder jpeg = JPEGCodec.createJPEGEncoder(stream);
            jpeg.encode(buffImage);
            URL url = new URL(/* my url... */);
            URLConnection connection = url.openConnection();
            String boundary = "--------" + Long.toHexString(System.currentTimeMillis());
            connection.setRequestProperty("method", "POST");
            connection.setRequestProperty("Content-Type", "multipart/form-data; boundary=" + boundary);
            String output = "--" + boundary + "\r\n"
                          + "Content-Disposition: form-data; name=\"myImage\"; filename=\"myFilename.jpg\"\r\n"
                          + "Content-Type: image/jpeg\r\n"
                          + "Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64\r\n\r\n"
                          + new String(stream.toByteArray())
                          + "\r\n--" + boundary + "--\r\n";
            connection.setDoOutput(true);
            connection.getOutputStream().write(output.getBytes());
            connection.connect();
        } catch {
    }This code works, but the image I get when I save it from the receiver application is distorted. The width and height is correct, but the content and colors are really weird. I tried to set different image types (first line inside the try-block), and this gave me different distorsions, but no image type gave me the correct image.
    Maybe I should say that I can display the original Image object on screen correctly.
    I also realized that the Image object is an instance of BufferedImage, so I thought I could skip the first six lines inside the try-block, but that doesn't help. This way I don't have to set the image type in the constructor, but the result still is color distorted.
    Any ideas on how to get from an Image/BufferedImage to a string or byte array representation of the image in jpeg format?

    Here you go:
      private static void send(BufferedImage image) throws Exception
        ByteArrayOutputStream byteArrayOutputStream = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
        ImageIO.write(image, "jpeg", byteArrayOutputStream);
        byte[] imageByteArray = byteArrayOutputStream.toByteArray();
        URL url = new URL("http://<host>:<port>");
        HttpURLConnection connection = (HttpURLConnection) url.openConnection();
        connection.setDoOutput(true);
        connection.setRequestMethod("POST");
        OutputStream outputStream = connection.getOutputStream();
        outputStream.write(imageByteArray, 0, imageByteArray.length);
        outputStream.close();
        connection.connect();
        // alternative to connect is to get & close the input stream
        // connection.getInputStream().close();
      }

  • Conversion of String to byte[ ]

    Hi everybody
    I have a Byte[] value in one of our client database it seems like this -- 00033DB7FB87EC4EB371BCC9D3BF13EC
    when they import into CSV it became String
    I need to Dump into my database what ever you see in that Byte[].the value is already a conversion only so i need to dump as it is.
    now the real problem is how to convert the same String as Bytes
    if i use String.getBytes() it exceeding the Field Length
    my filed length in the database is Binary (16)
    Plz do the needful
    Thanks for ur Help in advance

    So System.out.println(theString) results in "00033DB7FB87EC4EB371BCC9D3BF13EC"?
    Then .getBytes() is not what you need. It will get the bytes representing this unicode string in a specific encoding (such as ISO-8859-1, UTF-8 or the like).
    You need to parse to digits each as hexadecimal numbers (using Integer.parseInt() for example, don't forget to specify the radix 16) and convert that to a byte[] array (the length of the byte array should be half the size of the String).
    Warning: because Java knows only signed ints, you'll have to jump through some hoops to get the correct value. Assuming String a contains 2 hexadecimal digits, you get the byte value like this:
    byte b = (byte) (Integer.parseInt(a,16) & 0xFF);

  • A little help please. Switch statement?

    Well hey there,
    I have some code and I would like to know why it keeps skipping to a certain part.
    I have made code for a cinema booking system and ticket prices are;
    Adult £5
    Student £4
    Child £3
    But no matter which I choose the price is £5?
                                            if ((input1 != null) && (input1.length() > 0)){
                                                char choice;
                                                choice = input1.toLowerCase().charAt(0);
                                                int selectedprice;
                                                switch(choice){
                                                    case 'a':
                                                        selectedprice = 5;
                                                    case 's':
                                                        selectedprice = 4;
                                                    case 'c':
                                                        selectedprice = 3;
                                                    default: selectedprice = 5;I know I have a default price of £5 but how can I make it so there is no default and it goes on what the user chooses? Thanks.

    if ((string2 != null) && (string1.length() > 0)){
                            Object[] possibilities3 = {"Adult", "Student", "Child"};
                                    String input1 = (String)JOptionPane.showInputDialog(
                                            frame, "Please Select Ticket Type: ",
                                            "Ticket Booking", JOptionPane.PLAIN_MESSAGE, null, possibilities3, "" );
                                            if ((input1 != null) && (input1.length() > 0)){

                                                choice = input1.toLowerCase().charAt(0);

                                                 String input2 = JOptionPane.showInputDialog(frame, "Please Enter Number of Tickets: ");
                                                 Integer quantity = Integer.parseInt(input2);
                                                 TicketPrice total = new TicketPrice(selectedprice, quantity);
                                                 if ((input2 != null) && (quantity <= screen1.getCapacity()) ){
                                                     JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(frame, "Booking Confirmed! Payment of £" + total.getTotal() + " Transacted");

                                                     JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(frame, "Booking Not Possible!");This is most of the code, it always says the price is £5 for any ticket? Please help.

    I have a similar problem. I am writing a program to read the class names from database and instantiate several classes which extends from ServiceThread (an abstract class extending from Thread).
    rs = pStmt.executeQuery();
    while(rs.next()) {
    String threadclassname = rs.getString("classname").trim();
    try{
    ServiceThread threadinstance = (ServiceThread)Class.forName(threadclassname).newInstance();
    }catch ...
    So far, only the first class is ever instantiated and runs fine. But subsequent classes do not even get pass the "... ... Class.forName(...).newInstance();" line.
    Funny thing is that there are also no exceptions. The JVM just seem to hang there.

  • Tomcat won't work after XP SP2 install?? help, please

    Help please!
    Hi, I installed a fresh JDK (1_5_0_02-windows-i586-p), JRE (1.5.0_01), J2EE (1.4_2005Q1), Apache web server (2.0.53-win32-x86-no_ssl) and Tomcat (5.5.7) . Everything seemed to work. I installed XP Service Pack 2 and now Tomcat won't compile JSPs. (I don't know if the SP2 install was the cause).
    The service Starts okay, but when I try to hit a jsp, Tomcat takes over my processor (at like 80%) and it starts writing to the stdout log (stdout was set to auto), repeatedly. After being up for like 20 min the log was well over 1 GB in size. It showed the below exceptions repeating ad infinitum.
    I uninstalled and reinstalled Tomcat, repaired the Apache installation (that shouldn't matter, should it?), and I am going to try reinstalling JDK/JRE/J2EE, but does anyone have any ideas of how I can fix this?

    Is it possible this is resulting from classpaths not
    being setup correctly? Could someone please tell me
    what my CLASSPATH and PATH enviro variables should be
    fod JDK, J2EE, JRE, etc...? Both in general and
    specifically to be found by Tomcat. They are
    installed in:
    C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_02
    C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02
    C:\Sun\AppServer
    Thanks!Could be.
    I think installing anything in directories whose path has spaces in it is a terrible idea. I'd reinstall the JDK to c:\SDKs or something like that.
    There's no need for a system CLASSPATH - ever. You shouldn't have one. Use -classpath when you run javac.exe and java.exe to set the CLASSPATH. Tomcat has its own class loaders. You should deploy your Web apps in WAR files - they'll have the CLASSPATH set for you that way.
    Your PATH should include the JAVA_HOME\bin.
    set JAVA_HOME=C:\SDKs
    set CATALINA_HOME=c:\Tools\Tomcat, or wherever you installed Tomcat.

  • Servlet not inserting into Access Databse. help please

    I have the following code which is inserting three fields into a database. The database name is contacts.mdb, and the table is contacts. I have setup the ODBC connection on the server, of which I have both IIS and Tomcat running. The form.html that I am accessing is on the tomcat server root and that code is below as well. After hitting the submit button on the form I get forwarded to the servlet, and the page is blank. However, when I open the database, no updates have occured. Please help. I hope I have provided enough detail. Thanks so much.

    the code execute with no error or exception , the message that i recieve is "1 rows deleted" and i want delete just one row, it's ok until the moment but whene i read the table i see that the row is not deleted.
    I use dBase database, help please !!!
    Thanks

    Don't trust the return value.
    Because you got no exception it means that the SQL executed. SQL can execute without deleting anything however if the where clause does not match.
    As posted your code is not valid java so anything else is meaningless.
