Substitution Variable problem in member formula

I'm using the following member formula for a member in a sparse dimension - Scenario.
@VAR("Actual",&PO_PriorLE->"Final");
I can get this to validate in Essbase, but when I try putting it into Planning, the refresh to Essbase bombs and the formula will not validate in Planning.
Version - 9.3.1
Thoughts?

Paul

Hi,
I have just tried it on 9.3.1 patch 10 and had no problems.
I take it the member assigned to &PO_PriorLE already exists ?
Have you tried replacing the substitution var for the real member name in the formula.
What is the error message when you try and validate?
Cheers

• Substitution variable - Problem

The requirement is to have numeric value to a substitution variable. In essbase there is a provision to set numeric value to a substitution variable . i tried out the below one its not working.
Create a sub variable and assigned value "12" and tried using the same sub variable in the MDX query but getting error. kindly let me know is it possible to set a numeric value to a sub variable and use the same in MDX formula. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have seen this note in dbag :
If a substitution variable value is numeric, different rules apply for how you enter the variable:
If it is not used in MDX statements, enclose a substitution variable value in quotation marks; for example, if the variable name is Month, and its corresponding value is 01 (corresponding to January), place quotation marks around 01 (“01”). Substitution variables usually are used with block storage databases; they are not used in MDX statements.
If it is used in MDX statements only, such as in formulas in aggregate storage outlines, and the value is numeric or a member name, do not enclose the value in quotation marks.
Note:
If a substitution variable value is numeric or a member name starting with a numeral or containing the special characters referred to above is to be used both in MDX and non-MDX situations, create two substitution variables, one without the value enclosed in quotation marks and one with the value in quotation marks.

• Substitution Variable & its usage in formulas

Hi, I have a requirement of using Substitution variable ,say "CurMonth" in the formula for @PTD("JAN":&CurMonth). If I can be able to do this then I can update my substitution variable every month & then change the value in the PTD function using the substitution variable. My question here is whether substitution variable can only be used in calc scripts & not in formulas , if so why & is there any way my requirement can be met. Your ideas & solutions appreciated very much. Thanks & Regards

Substitution variables cannot be used in the outline - only in a script. If you want to be able to use the function in a member formula, you will either have to hard-code the month range, or tag the proper months with UDAs, and use the @UDA function to select them. That way, you can just change the UDA's every month rather than the formula, but the change will be an equal amount of work for either solution.If you don't mind using a calc script, you can use a sub variable, but you won't be able to make it dynamic calc as you would a member formula.Hope that helps.Regards,Jade------------------------------------Jade ColeSenior Business Intelligence ConsultantClarity [email protected]

• Problem with member formulas and allocation

Hi guys,
I am experiencing a problem I am not currently able to solve. I'm building a planning application in which
volumes can be inputed in different units of measure (5 are currently available). For example a user can input in liter or KG, and the
system converts this data in all the different units of measure available, executing a script logic after
the input (for every bas member is also stored a conversion factor, which is used by the logic for conversion).
Two are the major issues of this approach:
1) storing 5 different volumes for every SKU is consuming in term of disk and DB space;
2) script logic must be executed every time the user sends data and in some cases this could be time-consuming.
The solution I'm trying is to use member formulas in order to calculate different units of measure, storing
only one of these. However, this way lead to another problem: when I try to input data with a top-down approach, using BPC
ALLOCATION ENGINE, I cannot use the correct unit of measure as a driver for the spread.
For example, if I input volumes is KG, and the unit of measure stored is only liter, I cannot use nor KG as a driver (because is not stored,
but only a member formula) neither liter, because the spread using this driver would lead to a wrong result.
What I would like to do is to give the user the possibility to input in the desired unit of measure at an aggregated level and spread data
using the existing mix, which must be volumes with the same unit of measure used for input.
Does anyone has an idea that could help me?

hi
i found a solution for the Problem in another Forum
http://businessintelligence.ittoolbox.com/groups/technical-functional/hyperion-admin-l/dynamic-calc-formulas-not-refreshed-1719379?cv=expanded
The suggestion is
1. change the Member from Dynamic Calc to Store
2. Refresh (After these Step the Formulas where still out of sync)
3. change the Member from Store to Dynamic Calc
4. Refresh
After these Steps the Formulas are in sync again.

• Block creation problem in member formula

Hi,
I have a member formula as below :
IF(.....)
x = a/b;
ENDIF
where a,b have their own member formulas.
There is no issue with the calculations of x,a or b, but I am facing an issue with block creation of x.
Is there a way to handle block creation through member formulas? I know the way out through calc scripts, but i am trying to limit the use of calc scripts.
Thanks!
Note:The storage property of all three members is store. Also, a and b lie in the same intersection (same block), and x lies in another intersection.

In the following section of the dbag: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E12825_01/epm.111/esb_dbag/frameset.htm?dcaoptcs.htm...
Under the sub-section: In Equations in a Dense Dimension...
It states as follows:
In Equations in a Dense Dimension
When you use a cross-dimensional operator in an equation in a dense dimension, Essbase does not automatically create the required blocks if both of these conditions apply:
Resultant values are from a dense dimension.
The operand or operands are from a sparse dimension.
You can use the following techniques to create the blocks and avoid the performance issue.
Ensure that the results members are from a sparse dimension, not from a dense dimension. In this example, the results member Budget is from a sparse dimension:
FIX(Sales)
Budget = Actual * 1.1;
ENDFIX
FIX(Expenses)
Budget = Actual * .95;
ENDFIX
Use the DATACOPY calculation command to create and then calculate the required blocks. See Using DATACOPY to Copy Existing Blocks.
Use a member formula that contains the dense member equations:
FIX(Sales, Expenses)
Budget (Sales = Sales -> Actual 1.1;*
Expenses = Expenses -> Actual .95;)*
ENDFIX
The phrasing of that last part would lead me to believe that block creation via a member formula is possible. Though I'm not sure of the member to which that formula should be applied. Furthermore, the code looks funky in that we're fixing on Sales and fixing on Expenses, and them on the left side of the equation within the fix.
Thoughts anyone?

• How to use local variable in member formula?

Hi Expert,
We would like to use a {local variable} in a member formula, so that it can pick up the prompt from webform upon save. Would like to know if it is possible to do? If so, what is the correct syntax?
We attempted to use brace {scenario}, blacket [scenario], blacket with quote ["scenario"]. None of these work.
We are using 11.1.2.1 version, EPMA, Hyperion Planning.
Thanks in advance for your help!

One other pointer. Where did you define your variable? Hopefully you went into Calc Manager and selected <Tools>, <Variables>. From there, navigate to your application or database. Right-click on your application or database and select "New". In the bottom panel, you'll need to select your Variable Type. Make sure you select "Member", and not "Members". You cannot pass "Members" (plural) to a web input form. Also, if you want to define a variable for a custom dimension, you'll need to do it at the database level. Standard dimension member variables can be defined at the app level. (Not sure why this is the case, especially when my custom dimension exists in all plan types . . . . )
Anyway, hope this helps,
- Jake

• Financial Reporting (FR) using Substitution Variables with Quotes

HI all,
I've created a substitution variable, &CurWk, for a Period Dimension member. The member name, Dec Wk2, has an embedded space, so I enclose the member name in quotes when assigning it to the substitution variable in EAS. However, when I try to use that substitution variable in Financial Reporting, it does not recognize the Substitution variable. I've closed down and re-opened the FR Studio. If I remove the quotes around the member name when assigning it to the Substitution Variable, then FR will recognize the substitution variable. However, I get an error in the calc scripts if I try to reference the substitution variable if this member name is not enclosed in quotes. In my mind, this seems to be a bug in FR since quotes can be optional when referencing any member name. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a work-around? I'm using EPM 11.1.1. Thanks for your help!
Vince Kelly

Hi Vince,
For the Calc scripts add & to the front of the sub var and surround the sub var with [ ], for example:
where sub vars are ReptQTR, ReptYR, ReptScenario:
CASE
When (Is(QTR.Currentmember,[&REPTQTR]) and (IS(FY.Currentmember,[&REPTYR]))) then
CASE
When ((ISUDA(L000.CurrentMember,"NC"))) then
CASE
WHEN (ISUDA(L000.CurrentMember,"Expense")) THEN
(([&REPTPYR],[ACT]) - [&REPTSCENARIO])
ELSE
([&REPTSCENARIO] - ([&REPTPYR],[ACT]))
END
END

• Issue with rule file and Substitution variable

Hi All,
I am using Essbase 9.3.3
I created a rule file with 5 dimensions in which 3 dimensions I defined in columns and two dimensions I gave it as header in data column with comma seperated.
Among those two dimension members, one is an account member with "/" in it within quotes and other is a substitution variable.
The member assigned for that Substitution variable has a space in between and is updated within quotes in variables list.
When I try loading data, I am getting an error saying that two members are not valid.
Eg: "Tax/Unit",&Scenario is not valid.
&Scenario - "Budget Q1"
Can some one please suggest on the issue.
I am not facing any problem in calc scripts or reports scripts using the substition variable.
Thanks in advance

Mark,
Modifying the default files is dangerous and ill advised. You could always just add a style sheet (inline or linked) to your application that overrides that one setting while you wait on the permanent fix.

• Substitution variable in Load rule Header Essbase 11.1.1.3

Think its obvious you can use substitution variable as a Header definition on Load rules, does version 11.1.1.3 has any issues' with it, i am running into Unexpected Essbase error 1019026.
Error:
Unknown member [Mgmt Actual,Base,No Vertical,No Customer] found while processing string [Mgmt Actual","Base","No Vertical","No Customer]
Unexpected Essbase error 1019026
I want to copy Actual data into other scenario's in ASO cube so thought will use substitution variables to eliminate duplication on load rules.
Mgmt Actual is a scenario set thru Substitution variable at the DB level
i.e *&CurScen="Mgmt Actual" (set at DB level)*
Header Definition on load rule *&CurScen,"Base","No Vertical","No Customer"*
Data load work fine If i replace substitution variable with original member *"Mgmt Actual","Base","No Vertical","No Customer"*.
I did notice some users complaining erratic behavior when substitution variables are placed in load rule header at the End on multiple members, i have tried all places End, First and Middle.
tried using single Load rule with EAS and MAXl same results.
i want to keep altering scenarios on header definition and use same rule files.
alter database AppName.DbName set variable CurScen '"Mgmt Actual"';
Running out of ideas any help!

Possible Problems
Analytic Services does not recognize the listed string as a member of the outline.
Possible Solutions
Make sure that the member name is valid. The member name is in the rules file.
* Are you using the correct rules file?
* Is the rules file connected to the correct outline?
* Can you validate the rules file?
* Are member names or variable names enclosed in quotation marks where necessary?
* Does the member exist in the outline? If not, you can add the member by modifying the outline during the dimension build or add the member in the Outline Editor.
* Make sure that the member is not specified as a header in the rules file.

• Problem in taking correct Substitution variable in MDX Formula

Hi,
We have MDX Formula which takes Substitution Variable as input . Previously we used Hyperion Essbase 9.3.1.3 version and working fine currently we upgraded to 11.1.1.3 version After Upgrade this formula is not taking correct updated value. Its taking previously updated value . To Take the Correct value we are bouncing the Essbase Services then only new Formula is picking the latest Updated value. This is happening only for one formula and rest everything is working fine. Can you please tell us is there any bug or where is the problem is ?

• Problems using substitution variable in Web Analysis

Dear all,
I have a Web Analysis report that I need to show a raking table with the current month.
For that I create a variable in Essbase that is updated with that date (E.g.: varCurrentMonth).
After that I use it as my substitution variable to filter my date dimension in a report data source (E.g.: Scr5, row: product, column: date dimension & measure):
2008 (current month)
Product $ qty.
AAA 100 10
BBB 90 7
CCC 80 5
The problem is that in our cube we need to use an alias in every dimension not to have duplicate members (E.g.: DT.Date, MS.Measure, PD.Product, etc). And when we use it we need to set up the variable in Essbase using that alias (E.g.: DT.Feb/05/08). And if we use that variable as a substitution variable in the report data source the label displayed is the DT.2008 and not 2008 as expected.
Does anybody have an idea how to solve that?
Many thanks,
Thiago Gabriel

You usually get this error message if you are trying to assign a value from a sub var to a member that does not exist.
e.g. trying to put FY08 which is a year member against a period dimension
or trying to use a sub var of FY09 which does not yet exist in the essbase, so say you added a new year in planning FY09 and used the sub var in the form but have not refreshed the database then it would fail because the year would not have been pushed down to essbase yet.
or the value of the subvar does not match a member name exactly
or using a sub var name that does not exist in essbase, e.g. using &nextYear but the sub var has not been created in essbase.
You can definitely use subsitution variables in columns in the version you are using and prior version.

• Peculiar problem with Essbase (Calc Script) - substitution variable / UDAs

This is odd but I have a script like :
VAR iloop=1,break=0;
FIX(<required POV>)
Loop (20,break)
VAR Country_total1,Country_total2,Country_total3;
FIX (@UDA(Entity,@ALIAS(@CONCATENATE("&Country",iloop)))) // &Country1, &Country2 - are substitution variables with UDAs stored as strings
Statements;
/* +<statements for calculating total values.. for that country and stored against variables>+ */
Country_total1=Country_total1+ +<Calculation>+
ENDFIX
/* Second part : Now again the calculations stored in the variables are to be stored against specific entities */
FIX (@UDA(Entity,@ALIAS(@CONCATENATE("&Country",iloop))))
FIX(@ISUDA(Entity,<Check1>)
..... Assign to relevant account
ENDFIX
ENDFIX
ENDLOOP
ENDFIX
Now the problem is that the first fix statement works just fine, but the FIX statement in the 'second part' throws an error
Error: 1200354 Error parsing formula for [FIX STATEMENT] (line 66): expected type [STRING] found [EXTVAR] ([iloop]) in function [@CONCATENATE]
If I hard code the 'second part' FIX statement to the substitution variable directly - it works just fine.
How can the first statement work and not the second one ? They are exactly the same.

Glenn, thanks - I hadn't thought of that :).
But it still does not entirely solve my problem (please see my previous post depicting a requirement similar to ours )
- We have lots of countries (50-60+ might be much more) and each country can have multiple entities (3-4 on an average - can go unto 7-8)
- so good guess would be around 200 entities
- So say I have to do it for 2 countries only (two entity types). Then I need 4 variables - 2 for each country ('country 1 ET1 total', 'Country 1 ET2 Total')
When the list is 20 counties - variables become 40 :(.
- Still leaving aside the 40 variables for a bit -
There are subsequent steps of calculations which needs to be done based on these totals (which are exactly the same for all countries) - just that we need the correct totals to begin with and the rest is already stored in the DB
So since I have a different variable for each country - I cannot write one single calculation block to use the variables sequentially one by one (can I ?)
I might have to write a separate calculation block for each of these countries. (20 separate blocks)
That's what I was trying to avoid and simplify with the substitution variable (but is not working)
- Create substitution variables - which would store the alias of the required countries (2/10/20 as many required)
- Loop through these substitution variables - using them one by one
- So I just need one single block of calculation with all the variable in the calc script being reused after each country calculation is done
- and the user need not go into the script, as the only thing that will change are the countries. And he can change it easily through the substitution variable.

• How to compare substitution variable name to static member names (not data)?

Is there a way to write a BSO member formula that compares a substitution variable against the name of a static member (not the data value of the member)
For example, I have a BSO database that has the sub variable &CurrMth (which is set the real current month), and I am trying to use it in the Q1/Q2/Q3/Q4 member formulas
IF(&CurrMnth <> "Jan" AND &CurrMnth <> "Feb")
"Mar";
The intention of the above is: if &CurrMnth is neither Jan nor Feb, then the Mar value will be used. However, the system is actually comparing the values of &CurrMnth and Jan/Feb, rather than the names/text string of "Jan"/"Feb".
I have been looking around the tech references, but I was unable to find any functions that will compare the text strings of member names as they all appear to compare against the data itself.
Please let me know if there are any ways to compare the member names themselves in a member formula, not the data values.
Thanks!

Thanks Celvin, that looks like it works!
However, I do need to do the same function in the equivalent quarter members in our ASO cube as well. Do happen know know if there's a similar MDX function I could use in the ASO cube to acheive the same result? I was using the following to achieve this in ASO (which obviously did not work):
IIF([Time Periods].[Jan] <> &CurrMth AND [Time Periods].[Feb] <> &CurrMth,
[Mar],

• How to use user variable in Member Formula

Hi All
I have to write a member formula for %linearity quarter for a weekly application.This member will be used in reports and we do not want to do this calculation in reports, hence need to write member formula. The formula is
Week1 of Q1 forecast / Q1 Total Forecast , Week2 of Q1 Forecast/ Q1 Forecast.............,Week15 of Q2 forecast/ Q2Total Forecast.......and so on.
According to me it should work in the below mentioned manner , but need help in improvising the formula.
If(@ismbr("Weeks1") or @ismbr("Weeks2") or @ismbr("Weeks3") or @ismbr("Weeks4") or @ismbr("Weeks5") or @ismbr("Weeks6") or @ismbr("Weeks7") or @ismbr("Weeks8") or @ismbr("Weeks9") or @ismbr("Weeks10") or @ismbr("Weeks11") or @ismbr("Weeks12") or @ismbr("Weeks13") or @ismbr("Weeks14") )
"Current_Forecast"/"Q1"->"Current_Forecast";......
If anybody can help in suggesting how can i use user variable in this formula to achieve the required result.
Thanks

Hi
Thanks for the suggestion and it would be a better idea to use ISIDESC as compared to ISMBR.
I also wanted to ask if in the below mentioned formula if the result of first line is true than will the second line pick the current_forecast value of the respective member of Q1 and divide it by the current_forecast value of Q1.
IF(@ISIDESC("Q1"))
"Current_Forecast"/"Q1"->"Current_Forecast";
Also i need to know how can i write a member formula for week YOY% using user variables.The general formula is
Week 1 of FY13 - Week 1 of FY12/Weeks 1 of FY12
Week 2 of FY13 - Week 2 of FY12/Weeks 2 of FY13 and so on till week 53.

• Member formula restriction problem

I have made a customized form in Capex the layout of the form is that on row side i have Line Item dimension with 5 members and their parent and on coloumn side i have account dimension with 7 members selected.
I am using a member formula on the parent of the line item member on row side and in that member formula i have restricted one of the 7 account dimension member on the column with the help of IF statement. My problem is that if i dont use that if statment the member formula works fine but it also works on the other 6 members of the account dimension (on column) and if i use the IF statment then the member fornmula does not work at all.
My requirement is that the member formula should work on the combination of that 1 member of account dimension and parent of line item on row side.
Can anybody help me with that?

Hi Nilanjan,
1) all the members are in the same hierarchy (in fact, there is only one hierarchy)
2) all these members come from different branches of the hierarchy, they are not siblings, some are parents of others, however.
The values I specified are real values which I actually get when putting the accounts in an EVDRE report. Therefore, separately in EVDRE I see the calculated value 6 for account A and the fixed value 1 for account C. So, I expect to see also the value 1 for the account B and instead I see 2 meaning that for BPC 6 <= 1.
That is why I assume that BPC does not recalculate the account A used in the account B. And that is why I assume that solve_order is the problem. And I can not make this solve_order work in any way. What are the rules of SolveOrder's usage?
Thanks for help.
