Suggestions on File Naming

Hi Experts,
Will you please propose solution for File naming convention. When XI is generation a file. We can follow two approaches:
1.     Appending time stamp to file name
2.     Use of  number range created on ABAP stack of XI.
Which is better?
Regards,
Kavita

Hi Kavitha,
<i>Which is better?</i>
>>>It depends on the business requirement.
But i prefer timestamp, as it is provided by XI itself.
if you go with Number Range, then you need to do Jco connection with Application System or Integartion Server, where you maintained the number range.
But it is advisable in such cases where, you need to have some lookups so that you can generate new sequence number for each file generated by XI. So next time you will get new number , because of the numbe range object maintained.
Totally it depends on the requirements.

  • File naming problem; FCP won't regonize "-a" at the end of file names.

    i have a couple FCP project files named as follows:
    Family-Obesity-PSA_07-16-06-D.fcp
    Family-Obesity-PSA_07-17-06-A.fcp
    Family-Obesity-PSA_07-18-06-A.fcp

    Family-Obesity-PSA_07-18-06-C.fcp
    Family-Obesity-PSA_07-18-06.fcp
    Family-Obesity-PSA_07-19-06-A.fcp
    Family-Obesity-PSA_07-19-06.fcp
    and when I open most of the files, the tag on the label in the bin
    reads exactly as the file name does.
    BUT... if the files end in "-A" (like a few of the ones above) Final
    Cut Pro doesnt add the "-A" to the label in the bin, it just says
    "Family-Obesity-PSA_07-19-06" when it should say "Family-Obesity-
    PSA_07-19-06-A".
    Basically FCP ignores the "-A" suffix.
    This must be some weird bug. But funny that it only happens on the "-A" suffix...
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hey. It's not the clip name, it's the project name which is determined based on the file name. And I'm unaware of a way to change the project name. Is there a way?
    I don't think I know that David Marchese, but I'm sure there's some connection. My father's parents are from Sicily, but my father and I were both born and raised in America.

  • Dynamic file naming with File/FTP adapter

    Hi all,
    I have a requirement for writing files with names of the files based on a customer ID.... a dynamic name based on a value retrieved from the customer DB.
    I have already tried using the dynamic file naming suggestion in the bpel dev guide, it does not work. I followed the instructions, the process fails to compile and throws "part" and "undefined variables" errors etc.
    Has anyone succesfully used file/ftp adapter to write files with dynamic file names (using a varibale), not %SEQ% or %datetime% formats?
    Thanks,
    Hasan

    You can create a header variable that will allow you to set the outbound file name inside the process. This variable is a message type. From the type chooser select:
    Message Types
    Partner Links
    Outbound Partner Link
    Outbound wsdl
    Message Types
    Imported WSDL
    fileAdapterOutboundHeader.wsdl
    OutboundHeader_msg
    This variable will have a part filename.
    Set this part to whatever you wish your file to be named.
    Select the invoke to your outbound file/ftp partnerlink. Move to the adapters tab and select the header variable you created as the Input Header Variable.

  • Question on File naming

    When my users create a new file I create a file named untitled, what I would like to do is check for another file named untitled, if there is one I would like to name the file untitled1 sort of like Word or OpenOffice does.
    Anyone know how they do this?
    Is it by listing all the files checking for there names and then nameing it according
    //pseudo code
    get list[] of all files in directory
    walk thru files in the array checking for untitled
    for each one found increment the counter
    then name the file untitled+counter

    This is what I have so far, it works but I would like comments or suggestions.
    Thanks in advance.
    int counter = 0;
    newFile = true;
    File parentDir = new File("./App");
    File subDir = new File("./App/untitled");
    if(subDir.exists()){
        File files[] = parentDir.listFiles();
        for(int i = 0; i < files.length; i++){
            String fileName = files.getName();
    String name = fileName.substring(0, 3 );
    System.out.println(name);
    // not crazy about this, it works but I can forsee problems
    if( name.equals("unt"))
    counter++;
    subDir = new File("./App/untitled"+String.valueOf(counter));
    subDir.mkdir();
    else
    subDir.mkdir();

  • File naming issue/workflow help needed...

    I shoot weddings and am continually frustrated with A2's file naming. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated as it's killing my workflow.
    THE GOOD: I import the images with the file name I want and the metadata I want. I then edit out, deleting bad images and leaving borderline images (as outtakes) in the project while putting my selects together for the client in a smart album. I put the selects in a smart album based on their rating and keywords. The selects are not sequential, so I "select all" and make "batch change" putting them in sequence.
    THE BAD: Here is where I always encounter my first problem. Any images I have have worked on (in Photoshop) for my website now have different names. So when I export all in the album, the worked-on versions don't fit in sequentially. And some stacks have the edited image on top, and others do not.
    The other problem is when a bride places an order. I find the corresponding file and externally edit it. It now resides in the smart album with a different name than all the files around it. I put the print size in the exported version name and I have to open the dialog box for every single image and re-type the size in the custom name space. I have an order with 295 different images and it's killing me. The other problem is when the bride goes to re-order a print she has, the number on the back has no connection to the numbers on my site or the smart album.
    I find I'm going back to Photomechanic more often just to organize and name images because it actually changes the name of the file instead of "masking" it as A2 seems to do.
    Is there a way to keep A2 from doing this and how do I get the adjusted image to be the pick of the stack?
    Thanks-Kevin

    I happily paid the 20 bucks for 'A Better Finder Renamer' and was able to have it batch rename RAW files to my needs. It uses simple Boolean logic to cut or add to a file name and can read time stamps from the file.

  • How do I restore original file naming on an import

    Through a process of idiocy and confusion, I've ended up with TWO creation dates on my files, e.g. 20140112-20140112-Johnny at the beach.  I tried the step back, step back, step back system, or "undo, undo" but that didn't succeed.  I've tried creating a new catalogue to re-import the photos from iPhoto, but I've mislaid the File Renaming Panel that my Lightroom tutor's handout mentions as being on the right-hand side of the screen.  I can only see Histogram and Keyword list.
    When I try and rename the files individually, I don't get an option to merely remove one of the 201401112 key strings, I get a series of checkboxes.
    I know I've done wrong, but I want to undo it and not make it worse.  I'm scared that if I restore original settings, I'll delete all of my images - all 1400+ of them!
    Anyone who can give a solution gets a lovely cake.

    I suggest you stop Re-Naming your images on import and place them in folders by the date they were shot. Lightroom can do that for you on import from card or camera or you can do it yourself manually before you import them into LR. You could also put the Sub-folders by date in a top level folder by year or just in one folder named whatever you like.
    Not sure why people Re-Name their images when copying them from the card/camera to their hard drive. To me that makes no sense at all. If I have images that I want to separate from others I will manually re-name them and or assign a keyword or rating to them. You can also have collections of images by subject, location, date or whatever you like and those collections can be from any folder imported into LR.
    The only time I would even think about re-naming images on import, and or copying to my hard drive, is if I have 2 identical cameras. Which I have in the past. But even then I changed the file naming in the camera having one cameras files start with 1 and the other start with 2

  • INDCS3 File Naming

    Does anyone have any concrete info on how and why we should NOT use spaces in file names. I am getting mixed feelings from different people in our IT department. We save all our files on a server and have decided to eliminate spaces from file names and replace with "underscores".
    Anyone have anything to add?
    KPanthen, Albany, NY

    I believe that not all operating systems like spaces in file names as Peter has suggested about UNIX. If you remember back to DOS days you were limited to 8.3 file naming conventions (8 character name followed by a 3 character extension with no spaces). You are likely to eliminate one potential for file corruption by eliminating spaces, especially if you are working across multiple operating systems.

  • Aperture's file naming. Am I doing something wrong?

    I hate Aperture's file naming with every ounce of my being. It is so frustrating and this simple item kills my workflow. I am hoping it's me and I'm doing it wrong. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    1. I import the originals. File name is _dsc.0450.nef
    2. On import, I change the name to lapresle200909260450 and sort by image date.
    3. I edit.
    4. I move images around and group them visually by subject: the details, the groomsmen, etc...
    5. I rename the files sequentially. So file #450 might now be #575. The new name might be iconex090926prf0575 and sort by version name.
    The proofs go up and the client orders #575. I open the image in A2, edit with Photoshop and save. I go back to A2 and the stack now has two images, iconex090926prf0575 and lapresle200909260450. I export the client's retouched image to a folder on my desktop. My file naming presets are "version name_custom name" with the custom names being 4x6, 5x7, 8x10. When I'm ordering from my lab, each image has the print size in the name so I can keep big orders straight.
    After each image that gets an external edit, I have to go into the folder on my desktop and rename the file. Is there any way to have A2 export the image with the name that is visible? Going back in and highlighting and renaming every file to match the proof is so time consuming.
    Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
    Cheers-Kevin

    I import files as they are, no renaming. Then when I'm completely finished editing and organizing them within folders/projects/albums, + any additional editing in PS or other external editors, I relocate masters to my desk top and rename them then. A few seconds later I consolidate those same files back into the Aperture library and there they sit with new "file names." This method works for me but it helps to have tons of free space on the desktop and 16 cores rockin.
    Now why can't aperture export "file names" not version names but files names makes absolutely no sense! There is no preset for this and that needs to be fixed. I export custom name and index using the same exact name as the file name to put the images online or where ever. As long as nothing was moved or deleted this method sends images out matching the file names. You need to make sure that all your editing is done before you relocate and consolidate masters. My invoice from Paypal matches the files in my library. Perfect work flow if you never mess up the rough edit, if no body ever wants additional changes-lol, it's really a linear process, and is very limited*
    Editing images in apertures external editor or aperture dodge and burn is just stupid because they both create a additional tiff file in an attempt to force nondestructive editing. Where is the switch to turn this off! Please, we're professionals, lets' go manual.
    No switch, so I don't use it. It's a failed system like most other "round trip editing" attempts from apple like fcp, soundtrack, and others. I've used them all for years and they only work about half the time, removed from my work flow, end of story.
    Instead, prior to relocating and consolidating, I just export out the raw file as a 16 bit tiff and reimport it into aperture when editing is done in PS. Again, my computer does this in under a second, so it works for me.
    *Okay, rwboyer, has a very good approach to the problem. Do it the programs way instead of our way. Renaming the masters on import and only adding extensions later is really the way to go. All your searches will always hit the master name so all the extra stuff after the master name can personalize your client without ever changing the master name. He is also right regarding the use of metadata, it's really the reason why I'll forever be a aperture guy.
    Having said all that, I still think my way could be the fastest for all kinds of reasons with just two fixes.
    Add preset to export file names
    toggle switch, for editing raw files in Photoshop raw instead of creating new tiff files.
    Rwboyer, makes perfect sense, great approach.

  • No file named "f90servlet" on my machine

    Dear all,
    in Forms9iDS Version 9.0.2.7.0 on Windows 2000 Professional I am getting the following error
    FRM-92060 :Failed to connect to the server
    Bad machine specification :/forms90/190servlet:-1
    Still looking into this problem. I have discovered that there is no file named "f90servlet" on my machine. I assume this is the problem - or is the an alias for something else? I have tried re-installing Oracle9i DS without any change to the behaviour. Someone out there must know what is going on! Thanks for any help or suggestions!
    Any Suggestion will be appreciated
    Ahmed

    f90servlet and l90servlet are aliases for the Forms Servlet and the Forms Listener Servlet. For iDS these aliases are set in <iDS_HOME>\forms90\j2ee\forms90app\forms90web\WEB-INF\web.xml. They map to the classes oracle.forms.servlet.FormsServlet and oracle.forms.servlet.ListenerServlet respectively. These classes are contained in the f90srv.jar file in the \forms90\java directory.
    However, looking closely at the error message you are receiving, it says: Bad machine specification :/forms90/190servlet:-1
    This is showing the number one, rather than the letter L, as the first character in tha alias for the Listener Servlet. If this is the actual error message that you got, then the serverURL parameter has been incorrectly defined.
    This could come from the formsweb.cfg file (in \forms90\server), OR from the runtime preferences in Forms Builder (Edit > Preferences, Runtime Tab). So check both of those places to make sure that it doesn't incorrectly specify serverURL as 190servlet. In formsweb.cfg it should say:
    serverURL=/forms90/l90servlet
    Then you can click Set Default in the runtime preferences in Forms Builder, which should set things correctly.

  • How to add folder/project name to a File Naming preset

    Here's a tip to automatically add the name of the Project or its parent Folder to the filename during Import or Batch Change.
    I always used a custom field for adding my client's name to the filename upon Import or Batch Changing versions or masters. But often I would forget to change the custom name, and since it's auto-populated with the previous entry, I'd end up with a bunch of files with the wrong client's name on them. That looks kind of bad. So once I saw with Aperture 3 you can add the Project name or Folder name when relocating referenced files to the new folder structure, I was excited to be able to do the same for the filenames at import. Well, no such luck. They're not an option when you create a custom File Naming preset.
    However, I recently decided to poke around inside some plist files, and found a workaround. I discovered the format string for Folder Name is %F and Project Name is %P. The trick is getting the code into the Format Field where you create the preset.
    Create a new File Naming preset by choosing "edit" from the Version Name menu during Import or Batch Change. Drag everything you want in the name into the Format field, and enter %F or %P where you want the Folder or Project name. The tricky part is that you can't insert it between two existing criteria. It only works at the very end. After you have it in place, you can drag the criteria around to get it in the order you want.
    The alternative method is to insert the code directly into the plist. PLEASE, always make sure you're working with a copy and have a good backup when you're poking around in such things. If you have trouble getting the code to take from within Aperture, you can try this. Same as above, create a new preset, but this time, enter an F or P where you want the Folder or Project name. Give it a unique preset name and save it. Then Quit Aperture. Navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/FileNamingPresets.plist, and make a copy of the file, then open with Property List Editor. Dropdown the plist and then dropdown the item you want to edit. You should recognize it by the preset name. Now the easy part. Click in the FormatString field and insert the % character before the F or P you entered in the Format field. Save and you're done.
    I discovered later that while the Folder and Project name works just fine during import, for some reason only the Project name works during Batch Change. The Folder name simply creates a "-" in the filename.
    In case this is seen as a hack and gets deleted, I'm also submitting it to http://www.macosxhints.com/ and I suspect if anyone from MacCreate sees it, they'll steal it too, as they're known to do.

    I do not think there is an out of the box way to do this.
    The immediate solution that comes to mind is using a workflow, that runs everytime  a document is uploaded/item created, which may be too much for your scenario.
