Suppressing "reopen windows" dialog when restarting a crashed program

Hi All,
Is there any way of suppressing the alert dialog that pops up when restarting a crashed program? The alert's text reads:
"The last time you opened <app name>, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?"
I want the OS to just open the program without asking me this, since the computer is being used in a kiosk-type application.
Thanks,
c.

Yes, I still have access to the keyboard for a tty. It's just that X doesn't respond to any keyboard inputs.
I totally didn't know that you could run stuff on an X display from a tty. Worked with env DISPLAY=:0.0 xeyes
I think this is the most elegant solution.
The Ctrl+Alt+Bksp can no longer be activated with Option "DontZap" "false". There is a way to re-enable it with HAL or a setting in KDE/Gnome keyboard layout settings. It still kills everything in the X session though.
Thank you very much

  • Preventing Photoshop elements in Windows dialog when docked

    I am using an iPhone 3G, and have some more questions...
    When I've taken some new pictures with the iPhone and dock it to the computer. Two items automatically come up, Photoshop elements photograph downloader and a dialog from Windows asking what software I always want to run for this device (there is no option in that Dialog to do nothing).
    Is there a way to dock the iPhone without prompting any automatic software to start?
    Thanks.
    Bob

    For elements, right click the downloader icon in the system tray and choose disable (you can turn it back on again when you want to download photos). If that doesn't do it, go to Control Panel>Services and disable adobe active file monitor (this will cause you to lose the ability to have watched folders in PSE). Or you could upgrade to PSE 7, which just presents the downloader as an option in the windows dialog box, instead of as a separate program.

  • How to suppress Save As dialog when using the Close button on an editable pdf

    Environment: Windows 7, SDK 9, Adobe Acrobat Pro X, Visual Studio 2010 Professional
    Summary: when a document is opened for editing using automation, edited, then closed using the "Close" button, the confirmation dialog appears, "yes" is selected and then the "Save As" dialog appears.  It should save without the "Save As" dialog in the same way it does were the document opened from Adobe Acrobat directly.  My question is, is there any flag to set which governs whether the "Save As" dialog appears as part of the close document process.  It is behaving as if the document is read-only upon close. (it isn't)
    This is how the document is opened from C++:
    if(SUCCEEDED(hr = ::CoCreateInstance(__uuidof(Adobe9::Acrobat::CAcroAVDoc), 0, CLSCTX_ALL, IID_IUnknown, (void**)&pUnk))){
    hr = OleRun(pUnk);
    if (SUCCEEDED(hr)){
    if (SUCCEEDED(hr = pUnk->QueryInterface(&pAVDoc))){
    hr = pAVDoc->Open((BSTR)CComBSTR(strPath), strDocName, &bRet);
    Even when the plugin is removed from the plug_ins\AcrobatSDK directory, the behaviour is the same.
    Another reproduction is running the BasicIacVC sample, commenting out all lines from gAcroPdDoc->Close(); in InitInstance() and returning TRUE.  If an editable document is opened using the sample, edited then closed using the "X" button, the confirmation dialog is followed by a "Save As" dialog as if it were a read-only document which it is not.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Regards,
    Evan

    Yes, it does.  (as long as the pdf has been opened via a COM interface)

  • Suppress add-on dialog when launching Firefox

    When launching Firefox with new extensions installed, it comes up with a dialog box telling of the new extensions. I'd like a way to completely suppress this for our users, as we (in IT dept) already know it was installed and don't need our users to see anything about it.
    Is there a way to completely suppress the add-on dialog so it doesn't come up at all? Maybe a command-line switch, javascript extension, or setting in an ini file?
    Target is Debian and Ubuntu Linux with Firefox 3.6.
    thanks!

    This is stupid. Not only is the way to install plugins now basically a hack (unzipping an xpi file into a dir? really?), but getting rid of the notification is as well. I came up with three ways around this problem: a) install all plugins right after a fresh install, before any profile dirs are created, b) remove all profile directories, or c) edit the prefs.js file for the desired profile. Option "a" is obviously easiest but not always doable.
    to fully automate on linux for option b (assuming kioskfox-0.4-fx.xpi is your extension file):
    mkdir kf
    unzip kioskfox-0.4-fx.xpi -d kf/
    sudo mv kf /usr/lib/firefox-addons/extensions/`cat kf/install.rdf |grep em:id|head -1 | cut -d '>' -f 2|cut -d '<' -f 1`
    rm -rf /home/*/.mozilla/firefox/*default
    alternate to an rm -rf for option c (if firefox has been started already, and this line appears in the prefs.js):
    mv /home/<user>/.mozilla/firefox/*default/prefs.js /home/<user>/.mozilla/firefox/*default/prefs.js.orig
    cat /home/<user>/.mozilla/firefox/*default/prefs.js.orig | grep -v "extensions.newAddons" > /home/<user>/.mozilla/firefox/*default/prefs.js
    dork around with it a bit to understand what I'm doing, to make sure you don't mess yourself up. obviously if you don't use the default profile, change *default to whatever the profile is named.

  • Options Startup Show my Windows & Tabs from last time,but upon exit FF doesn't ask to save tabs & windows. When restarting FF I have a home pape,but no Bookmark tabs show. Why

    Upon starting FF and going to my Home Page, I have no Bookmarks or Tabs showing. I have to Re-load the Bookmark Tabs. My options at Startup are "Show my Windows & Tabs from last time" Also using the Firefox exit,it does not ask to save tabs & windows on Exit. I'm getting tired of adding Bookmark Tabs each time I want to use FF.

    It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    Delete the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/sessionstore.js
    If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.<br />
    Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note).

  • How  to get rid of reopen window box on shutdown

    I want to have my Mac default to not opening windows previously opened and I want to get rid of the anoying default "reopen windows" box when I shut down. How do I do this?

    A permanent replacement for the "Reopen windows when logging back in" checkbox is as follows:
    1. Close all apps you don't want to open at startup.
    2. Open your user Library folder. It is normally invisible, so press the Option key while selecting the "Go" menu in the Finder then select "Library" to open it.
    3. Use the Get Info dialog "Locked" checkbox to lock this plist:
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.loginwindow.*.plist
    where "~" is your home folder and "*" is a sequence of characters (12 in my case). No need to lock the corresponding lockfile.
    This plist is where the System stores "reopen windows" info, so the System can't change/delete it if it is locked. This won't change the "Reopen windows..." checkbox setting, but that setting will no longer have any effect.

  • InDesign CS6 for Windows: Type tool crashes program and am getting missing plug-in msgs.

    Just installed InDesign CS6 for Windows. When I open the program, I receive three messages:
    (1) Paragraph Panel.APLN needs Justification Panel plugin;
    (2) Runin Styles Panell.APLN needs Find and Change Panel plug-in;
    (3) Objectstylesui.APLN needs Graphics Panel plug-in.
    To top it off, the type tool crashes the program.
    I couldn't locate any current forum postings that appeared to help. I have uninstalled and re-installed the software. I have done an update from Adobe.
    Advice? This is an educator's addition if that matters.
    Thanks,
    Julie

    Thank for your help Peter. My software is working just fine now.
    For others who might encounter these issues, here is how - with Peter Spier's help - I solved my problems. I uninstalled the previous CS6 version and re-booted. I disconnected from the Internet and then disabled my antivirus protection, antispyware and firewall. I had to do this in Norton as well as Windows (Windows Defender and Windows Firewall). Then I re-loaded the entire CS6 and re-booted. I opened InDesign. I no longer got the msgs about plug-ins missing. I then opened a new file and checked the Type tool. It worked fine. I opened an InDesign CS3 file, saved it as a new file in ID CS6. I was able to successfully edit text using the Type Tool.
    Thank you to Peter for your help!

  • Use Native Windows Dialogs in Firefox 10

    I like to set Firefox 10 to use the original Native Windows Dialogs when Open, Save, Save as, etc. are called.
    I use Direct Folders to quickly navigate to any folder I need, this has been working fine until now, but not with this new version.
    I need to know what to set in "about:config" to use the old Windows Dialog boxes

    Hi,
    Firefox uses the Windows native dialog boxes by default. You can try to check this in [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe%20Mode Safe Mode].
    [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions Problematic Extensions]
    [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting%20extensions%20and%20themes Troubleshooting Extensions and Themes]
    [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons Uninstalling Add-ons]
    [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_toolbars Uninstalling Toolbars]
    Safe mode disables the installed '''Extensions''', and themes ('''Appearance''') in '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Add-ons'''. Hardware acceleration is also temporarily disabled - the manual setting is '''Tools''' > '''Options''' > '''Advanced''' > '''General''' > '''Use hardware acceleration when available'''. [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Options%20window%20-%20Advanced%20panel?as=u Options > Advanced]. All these settings/add-ons can also be individually or collectively disabled/enabled/changed in Firefox normal mode to check if an extension, theme or hardware acceleration is causing issues.
    [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Options%20window Options]
    If the problem persists, you may have to change the settings in Direct Folders or any other Windows enhancement/theme software.

    When I try to open iPhoto I get a window dialog that says...
    Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable
    Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.
    I have tried the reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keyes pressed.
    No change.
    I dee nothing but a blank page,
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Also hace back ups of all images on cd's. dvds and jump drives.
    Any advice is appreciated.

    Option 1
    Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
    Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
    This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
    Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Reopen Windows When Restarting Doesn't (Yosemite)

    When restarting an checkbox appears allowing open windows to be re-opened after restarting. This is a great idea, except that it does not do what it says. It allows open Applications to be re-opened after a restart, but not open Finder Windows. Is there a way to restore open Finder Windows after a restart?

    Just to record that I (and several other people I've seen with this problem) have the symptom Wayneswhirld describes without having apps set to 'Open at login' selected. I've created a StackExchange question describing the problem and suggested (but non-working) solutions I've found: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/39555/unchecking-restore-windows-when-q uitting-and-re-opening-apps-doesnt-work

  • Firefox crashes, then when restarts, it doesn't go to the page where it crashes. It is blank, so I have to reboot

    Firefox is crashing but restarting to a blank page. I then have to start all over again. Information on the crash is sent to Firefox on the crash, but it doesn't explain why it is not reopening to the place where the crash occurred. I am not getting the message that sorry we can't open this window and that shows the open tabs that can be closed.
    Recently upgraded to the 10.0.2 and this is when it started doing this.
    The help information doesn't say why FF is not reopening.

    Hey Bridgette,
    Have you tried starting Firefox in Safe Mode? Hold down "shift" while Firefox is starting up. If the crash doesn't happen in Safe Mode, you should read [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]].
    There is also a lot of useful stuff in the [[Firefox crashes]] Knowledge Base article. If you've recently upgraded, you might want to check out [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/latest-firefox-issues this article] as well.
    Hopefully this helps!

    To prevent application windows (not Finder windows) from reopening on restart, simply close all open applications, then use the Get Info dialog "Locked" checkbox to lock this plist (not the lockfile by the same name),
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.loginwindow.*.plist
    where "~" is your home folder, and "*" is a string of characters (12 in my case). This plist is where the System stores "reopen windows" info, so the System can't change/delete it if it is locked. Works fine for me and others.

  • How do I disable "reopen windows when logging back in"

    Everytime I shutdown the mac asks me "reopen windows when logging back in". In fact the default is to do reopen all open programs when I restart. he annoying thing with apple is that when you close a window like Safari and iPhoto the program itself is not closed unless you spend extra time to go and QUIT each program. So naturally at least Mail and Safari are up when I'm ready to shutdown. On a other days MS Word, Excel and iPhoto are open as well. This is annoying to have to remember to QUIT everything when I'm sleepy before shutting down. Mac is supposed to be convenient not tedious. Please stop asking me if I want to reopen on logging back in. And worse yest stop assuming that this is the default action. Someone please help!

    You can uncheck the option box on the shut down screen. Or you can use a terminal command to disable it completely. Or you can get in the habit of using Command+Q (No Caps on the Q, Command+q) to shut down programs that you no longer need running. And if you get in that habit of using Command+q you don't need to close the window or windows that are open for that program. Command+q will close the program and the active window/s.
    EDIT:
    Here is a site that give you the command to disable this annoying ?FEATURE?.
