Surround variable with quotes

Question

String SQL = "SELECT * FROM customer WHERE cust_name = " + combo;
combo is an object not a string to run this SQL command the variable combo needs to be surround by quotes how do I do this?

        }When i do that I get error "unreported exception java.sql.SQLException; must be caught or declared to be thrown"
