SWF file only opens in Player, not Application

I am new to Flash and I am working on updating a website that was created by co-workers in 2009. I was not here when it was created and those people are no longer here to help me out. The website is www.vintageresidential.com. I am simply trying to update a few of the photos in the flash file that plays on a few of the pages. We recently upgraded from CS2 to CS5.5 and I am working on a PC. When I try to open the SWF file in the Flash Application, it only lets me play it through the player and I'm not granted access to any of the editing tools(see image). I recently found a photoshop file where it looks like they created the animation, but I'm confused how they saved it as an SWF file.

An .swf is a compiled Flash flash file. It can't be opened in Flash. There are a number of Flash decompilers available that you can use to get into that file if you really need to. Do you not have the original .fla file that was used to create the .swf?
There is no direct way to export from Photoshop to a Flash .swf. You can import Photoshop layers into a Flash movie, though I don't think that you could do that in Flash CS2.

SWF File in Adobe Flash Player

I've created a flash animation (the backgroung is moving horizontally and vertically according to the movement of the mouse), the problem is that when I open my SWF file in Adobe Flash Player 10.0 the whole animation is shaking. (In Adobe Flash in preview mode it looks fine)

Hi,
When you mean by shaking does it mean that the animation does not run smooth or it actually cuts frames? You might want to check if the same thing happens to the animation if you export it as an html(File--> Preview--> HTML). If that is happening it can be three things:
Video Card Driver problem: maybe update your video card drivers or something might be going on with the video rendering software
Computer Speed(which I really don't think)
Flash Driver problems: try uninstalling the flash player program and installing the latest version(I also don't think you will have problems there)

I offered this solution based upon similar successful advice which was given to another poster who solved this problem:Long story short I ended up reinstalling Mac OS X using Archive and Install. When I first used the computer following reinstalling Mac OS X, I was able to access the System Preferences by selecting them under the Apple in the menu bar. However, I have now updated my software using Software Update, and now I can't access System Preferences when I click on them under the Apple in the menu. The computer just acts like I never selected System Preferences.
Where have System Preferences gone??? provides another example of Previous Systems folder interfering with System Preferences.
Applications don't work after reinstalling Mac OS X explains a different problem with a Previous Systems folder: Example 1: You downgrade by performing an Archive and Install installation, but do not update to a later version of Mac OS X. The Previous Systems folder contains later versions of applications that may contribute to this issue.If you have proper backups, I recommend trashing the Previous Systems folder as soon as you can determine that the new system is functioning properly. The Previous Systems folders will either take up too much space or contribute to unexplained system problems.

You can try right clicking on one of your xls files select get info then select open with, select other then choose office excel and check the box to say always open this file type.

My updated help file only opens the TOC/Index/Search

I have to update an old project that uses WinHelp, so I installed RH X5 on an old XP machine. The original help file always opened in a 2-pane window with the ToC on the left and the default topic on the right. My "updated" help file only opens the ToC/Index/Search screen in a single pane. How do I get SWF files to open in Flash Player?

Currently they have no program associated to the extension. When I try 'Open With...' I cannot find Flash Player at all and opening in IE causes a loop between opening an IE window and the 'Open File, Save File, ect' window.
I'm currently running Windows 7, Mozilla Firefox, and have no other isses with things playing on my PC.

You can either try associating .swf files with a browser so they open the SWF directly, or else you can download the standalone (aka "projector") flash player and associate the files with that.

.cer files only open in notes

I have a new N95 and am trying to install a .cer file but it will only open in Notes on the phone. I am on a mac so do not have the Nokia pc connection program. However the .cer file is showing on my phone memory card but will not install.

You can try right clicking on one of your xls files select get info then select open with, select other then choose office excel and check the box to say always open this file type.

Swf file plays in IE8 but not Firefox or Safari

I've inserted an swf file in my webpage using Dreamweaver CS4's Insert/Media/swf function. It plays fine in IE8 but won't work at all in Firefox or Safari. I can view flash files in other websites using these browsers and I've updated my version of flash so I can only put it down to a coding thing. Website is www.201.com.au and the Dreamweaver code follows. Any suggestions??

SWF files work in browsers, but not local?

I can view flash content from the net in web browsers, but
the swf files I have on my local hard drive do not work. They are
asking for 'open With' but when I look for the flash folder in
programs files its not there. I have have also looked in system32
folder can find it anywhere. Can anybody please help, this is
driving me up the wall.

Swf files only play after FLash CS5.5 is loaded

I click on a swf file in a folder and for a while it said it was a shockwave file (after I downlaoded and installed Shockwave, I don't know why, had nothing to do I guess). So I realized that shockwave wasn't the answer and uninstalled it.
Then when I click on a swf file, nothing happens. I've right clicked on it and tried to put an association with it but I don't know where the flash player 11.1.152 resides in orderr to make the association.
I had cs4 D,P, and cs5,D,P, which I just recently uninstalled becaues adobe told me it was ok to uninstall the Design Premium since I recently purchased cs5.5 master collection. I usually don't fool around with files like this but
I must have been bored. Now I'm not.
t Since I don't know wha t to associate my swf files with, I associated it (file association, I get there by right clicking on a swf file and a small window opens and asks what prorgram it should use to open the swf file). I know it's FLASH but
I don't know where the file resides... in windows? In program files? In program data?? Where?? Once I find it, I will be able to chooes it and make the file association. and I am sure it will work then. I have an adobe case # with this issue
but it's taking them 2 days now to find an answer. they suggested I come here, so here I am. PLease assist!! Thanks in advance! doug

So, I finally figured out how to do it. And here is the code for anyone who is trying to do the same.
First thing first when you are exporting captivate file to flash it creates a "com" folder, you will need that folder to access the rdSoundHandler.
And then simply use the following code to play/pause the swf. This code will not work for swf file created in flash.
This is the answer to problem I found, if anyone find a better way then please keep posted.

Double click on 3.1 swf file in 4.0 is not working

We recently migrated 3.1 SP2 stuff into 4.0 SP2 and found some problems and I was unable to solve it. Can anyone help me...
1) When I double click on Flash file, its not opening dashboard and its doing nothing. This is when I go into Folders and then double click. If I right click and select view on the 3.1 dashboard in 4.0 then it is working fine. Funny thing is, in BI Launch pad Home, if I double click any migrated dashboards on latest documents section then it is working. Any idea on whats going on?
2) WRE 99998 & LO 26315 errors. Some of the migrated dashboards are giving these errors.. When I try to establish new connection using Live office and select particular Web I document then I am getting WRE 99998 error. If I open migrated dashboard in Dashboard designer and when I modify particular WebI object then it is giving LO26315 error. If I save the WebI report in Launch Pad as Refresh on Open then I can able to open it in LO as a new connection and also I can able to modify and refresh the existing connection... I am not sure whats going on here... Any ideas or help?

1) This might be a browser thing, what version are you using? Are you saying that doulbe clicking a new dashboard that has been exported the the repoository from new Xcelsius works? The other swf files, are these just saved to the repository as flash files, or exported from withing Xcelsius?
2) I have no helpful answer, sorry. Only the suggestion to not use LiveOffice. BI Services is the future.

Help for PowerPoint 2007 crash when running embedded SWF file with latest Flash Player?

I have developed in Xcelsius 2008 SP4 a dashboard with only Excel as the source. I output to PowerPoint and then save it as a PowerPoint 2003 PPS file. On more than a few machines that have PowerPoint 2007, PowerPoint crashes when I attempt to run the presentation. This happens only with later versions of Flash Player. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling the latest Flash Player but it still crashes. However, when I revert back to Flash Player 10.1.159..., in PP 2007 the presentation runs perfectly.
With regard to the error I receive in PowerPoint 2007, it is as follows:

on the first glance I see these: data="file:///Macintosh HD/Users/user/Documents/Website/Working.swf", what means the path to your swf file is pointing to your local hard drive which nobody can see except you. Please replace all thes pathes with the correct ones and load up your file(s) again.
If the problem remains, please send a link to your website in question, no matter how it looks like..

Swf. file only shows skin and no video! Please Help!

I've created a flash video that tests great in flash, in its folder with its skin and flv. component and even in Dreamweaver test. But when I upload all of the files onto my server it will show only the empty player with the skin progress bar looking green hash-marked. Does anyone know what is wrong? For some reason it looks like it can't find the .flv.
I've the latest version of Flash and Dreamweaver and the .swf file works great until it is actually uploaded on my site. All the files are in their own folder, in my site folder.
Is there a proper way to put these 3 files on the site? I usually just pull the files into the folder on my computer and refresh and then upload. My other videos appear to work but this is a re-ocurring problem!

The Flash will not likely be able to load the file from your harddrive if it is on the server... hopefully your browser would prevent any online file from being able to access files on your harddrive.
You will know if the file is dynamically loaded or not if you physically placed the flv contents into the Flash files (manual) or you just provide the name of the file for the Flash file to load (dynamic).

Exporting to swf file targeted to Flash Player version 9

I am trying to create a swf file targetted to version 9 of Flash Player, but when I export to the swf format from InDesign CS5, there doesn't seem to be an option to change the targeted version, and I get files targetted to version 10 instead.
I need to be able to target to version 9 to run in the zmags environment.
Does amyone know if there is there any way to do this from InDesign?

Thank you kindly for your answer. I knew it was possible to do in Flash and I'm finishing it this time around using Flash Professional, but my client owns only InDesign at this point. I was hoping to discover how to do it with software she already has.
If it's the case that there's no way to do from InDesign alone, then that would be the answer. Before I share that unhappy news with her, though, I wanted to be certain there was no way to do it from within InDesign.
