Switched computers, how do I transfer my library

I have 40gig of songs on my laptop, and my work doesn't want me to have all my music on truly their laptop, so how do I now transfer my songs from my ipod to my new desktop computer. I downloaded i tunes on it, but when I plug in the ipod, there seems to be no way to transfer those songs to the new i tunes folder on my new computer. Help please!

How to copy and move your music files from one computer to another
This is the conceptual framework with related and important links. Apply it to your specific situation and resources.
The safest and best way (in my opinion) to move your Library to a new computer is to actually clone the entire ‘iTunes’ folder structure, rather than just copying the song files. By copying the entire ‘iTunes’ folder and all sub-folders, you capture not only the music files, but the all-important .ITL Library file (located directly in the ‘iTunes’ folder), which contains all the data about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, PlayCounts, LastPlayed, DateAdded, etc). See: What are the iTunes Library files?
Install iTunes on the new computer. Then go back to your old computer and move the "iTunes" folder which usually resides inside your "My Music" folder from the old computer to the exact same place on the new one. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will behave exactly the same way it did on the old, Play counts, ratings, comments and all!
It is usually safer moving files between computers with the same version of iTunes!!
This process works best when cloning exact versions of iTunes, your music files and the iTunes meta-data files.
Here's a list of methods to copy and move your music files from one computer to another:
1) Use an External Hard Drive (ExHD) to move the complete files and Folder structures from one computer to another (my preferred option). You can clone’ the entire ‘iTunes’ folder structure in one very easy step.
2) Connect the two computers through a router. Or use a Crossover (for PC-to-PC) or Direct (for Mac/Mac or Mac/PC) Ethernet cable (See: http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3001.html). Copy files between computers.
3) Connect the two computers via a USB-to-USB Network Bridge. See: here as an example.
4) Use the iPod as a transfer device, as this extensive Apple link explains. This well written process also works fine while using any other data transfer medium (ExHD, Flash Drive, DVD, CD, Zipp, Jazz, etc.). It will be a bit easier if your iPod (or copy medium) has a larger capacity than your music collection, otherwise you will need to perform multiple copy/move transfers.
5) Burn several DVDs (at 4.7GBs each) with your music data files and load them onto the new computer. Re-writable DVDs are more cost effective (if your DVD drive can manage these types).
6) Burn 6x more on CDs (at 700MB each) than in #5 above and load the files on the new computer. Re-writable CDs are more cost effective (if your CD drive can manage these types).
7) Use a larger USB Flash drive (1GB - 4GB) to move the files. Best if the flash drive is larger than your Library, otherwise you will need multiple copy/move transfers.

  • Switching Computers: How Do I Transfer My Library The Easy Way?

There are several parts to this question. So I'll try to be as clear as possible. Here's the story, I bought a new laptop over 1 year ago but I'm not able to transfer my library as it is exactly on the old one. So now I think it's high time I switched but I'd like to know if it is possible to:
    - Sync my iPod to the new computer and have playlist and all appear the same as the old computer (I tried this but it'll only sync back music I purchased from iTunes not my earlier stuff)? Or
    - Is there a way that I could copy the saved ".itl" file from my current iTunes music folder into the new one and copy my iTunes files physically to the new folder via an external drive and have my PLAYLISTS STAY the same? Or
    - Is there some other way that I can do this that I'm not thinking of?
My Library is a mess and my PLAYLISTs keep everything organized for me. I'll probably cry if I have to physically recreate them in the new computer because it's going to take YEARS. Besides, it means that everytime I change computers I'll have to go through the same thing over again.
I don't know if you can tell how much this means to me but I have a computer that's still brand new (and 4x more powerful than my current one) for over a year now just because I can't get my iLife in order.
SP PLEASE ANY AND ALL HELPFUL INFORMATION WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
Ps. I have iPod Classic 5 and latest iTunes 7.??

Digging around a little more, I found this http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173 and I think I'll answer my question.
    Thanks for looking,

  • Switching computers - how do I transfer my purchased Creative Suite?

    Hello,
I installed "Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Design Premium Student and Teacher Edition" on my Mac a couple years ago (purchased from Adobe's web store). I am now thinking of purchasing a new laptop. Will I be able to use my Creative Suite 5.5 on my new computer? And what if the new computer is not a Mac?

And what if the new computer is not a Mac?
It better be or else you would need to buy an upgrade to CS6 (or a new S&T license, if you are still eligible) and make the platform switch. Otherwise it's as simple as running Help --> Deactivate on the old machine and installing on the new one...

  • New Computer!  How do I transfer my library?

I'm assuming I download iTunes to the new computer (Dell Inspirion 6000 Notebook). Then how do I transfer the library from my iTunes on my desktop to the iTunes on my notebook?
Is there an easy way to do this?
Also, if I do have to download iTunes on my notebook - should I try to aviod iTunes 5 - since there seem to be so many problems, or have they been fixed?
    Thanks.

iTunes 4: How to copy music between authorized computers
Though it refers to iTMS purchased music, it applies to all your tracks. And if you happen to also own an iPod:

If you have tracks that you purchased from the iTunes Music Store on your old system and you won't be using that system once you move the tracks, don't forget to deauthorize the system before you dispose of it.

  • Help Please..Until recently I have owed 2 iPod Classics - 2007 80gb and 2009 160gb (which has since been returned). How do I transfer the library from the 160 to the 80gb in iTunes using Windows Vista (ie merge the 2 libraries)? Thanks

Until recently I have owed 2 iPod Classics - 2007 80gb and 2009 160gb (which has since been returned as it had a very noisy hard drive).
How do I transfer the library from the 160gb  to the 80gb in iTunes using Windows Vista.
Nothing seems to help on the Apple support pages, so any help would be appreciated
    Thanks

Thanks for the reply, but not actually sure how to sync a second iPod with the library of the first, as I thought it would not recognise a new iPod for copyright reasons.
Also, the files are in a location on the pc but I had to do lots of formatting amendments in iTunes as most of the stuff was on mp3 files and the formatting was all over the place. I did not want to loose any of the work by simply asking the new iPod to look at the original file and would rather copy en masse from one device to another.
Any help or pointers greatly appreciated
    Thanks

  • I have the computer with my itunes library on it but no longer have access to the email account the library was set up with. How can I transfer the library to a new appleid/email?

I have the computer that holds my itunes library. However, I no longer have access to the email account (and therefore apple account) it was set up with so can't sync/update etc. How can I transfer the library to my new apple id? Any help gratefully received as searched the internet but can't find the answer!
Have ipod touch 4th gen, ipod touch 5th gen and ipod nano 7th gen all to sync to library.

    Hi Stillme,
You cannot transfer purchases from one Apple ID to another. You need to go into the old Apple ID and change it to the new email address instead of using a new Apple ID altogether.
    Apple - My Apple ID
If you can't remember the password to the old ID, then click on Reset your Password, and answer the Security Questions. If you can't remember the Security Questions, contact iTunes Support and have them reset:
    APPLE ID SECURITY CONTACT NUMBERS
Once you get into your old account, Edit the Apple ID to your new email address. Before you will be able to do that you are going to have to change the email address on the new Apple ID to something else.

just install on your new computer.  if you need the installation file(s), see below.
because you're limited to two concurrent installations and activations, you may need to deactivate on your old computer.  open your program>click help>deactivate.  or, if you no longer need your software on your old computer, deactivate it.

  • How do I transfer my library from my iPhone to my new Macbook Air?

How do I transfer my photos from my iPhone or IPad to my new Macbook Air?  I last synced to my old Macbook Pro, and have since had a major issue with the library on that computer.  The library on my iPhone and iPad are good and would like to import those to my iPhoto on my Macbook Air and just start from there.  Any suggestions?  Thank you!!! Craig

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

How do I transfer my itunes library from this MacBook Pro to a new one?  I am using an iPod Touch...

the simplest way, assuming all your media files are in the default location, would be to connect the two Macs with a firewire cable, boot the source Mac in Target Disk Mode, and copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) from <MacintoshHD>/users/yourname/music on the source to <MacintoshHD>/users/yourname/music on the target (overwriting the iTunes folder in place there).
