"Switchport monitor" behavior

Hi Cisco Community,
I have a Q in regards to the behavior of a Nexus 5K port configured as Trunk and with the switchport monitor option enabled. Here's the configuration of that port:

My question is... what occurs to the port if I put the session in shutdown mode with a "monitor session 1 shutdown" command? Does it becomes an active trunk and starts forwarding traffic? I've been digging at Cisco documentation but have not found a clear response about this other than "Does not participate in spanning tree while the SPAN session is active." from the following document:

I'm interested on the behavior as recently we were hit by a Network Loop right after we shutdown a couple of monitoring sessions where the destination ports were connected to a third switch.

Sometime monitor problems can be due to a bad PRAM battery. How long has yours been in the machine? If you regularly disconnect your computer from the power supply a battery can only last a year or so. If your battery is more than a couple of years old it may need replacing.

If you have a digital multimeter you can check the condition of your present battery. It should read at least 3.2V if it is the 3.6V half-AA battery type.

  • Trashed windowserver plist files, now monitor behavior is totally erratic

    Hello,
    I followed advice posted in another topic which suggested deleting the windowserver plist files to address erratic display behavior. If I remember correctly, I deleted four such files (sorry, didn't record the exact file names).
    Upon rebooting, the system created two new windowserver plist files
    com.apple.windowserver.plist
    com.apple.windowserver.0016cba959d1.plist
    The monitor behavior is now totally erratic. Specifically, anytime my Mini goes to sleep, it doesn't recognize the monitor when I wake it up. Screen is black with a "no signal" message generated by the monitor. I have to reboot several times, reset PRAM or reset the PMU to get the display back. No specific sequence of steps seems to do the trick, but I can get the Mini to recognize the display after several attempts with the above-mentioned approach.
    Here is the system set-up:
    Mini 1.83 GHz Intel Duo Core
    Viewsonic VX2245wm (the one with the built in ipod dock)
    Did I delete windowserver plist files that I should not have deleted? Any other thoughts on troubleshooting this?

    PS: I'm using MAC OS X 10.4.1
    Also, what originally prompted me to trash the plist files was that the display behavior became erratic following Apple updates a couple weeks ago.

  • Odd dual monitor behavior in Photoshop CC 2014 on Mavericks

    I'm seeing some strange issues with a dual monitor setup (monitor 1 is MacBook Pro screen, monitor 2 is an external monitor) in Photoshop CC 2014. I have images open on both screens. If I use the eyedropper to try to pick a color from an inactive image window on one screen, it won't pick up the color unless I click on the image to make it the active image. I don't remember this behavior on dual monitors before.
    I'm also seeing that if I switch from another application back to Photoshop and start painting or erasing, nothing happens in the active window. I have to re-switch applications and try again. Sometimes that works, other times it doesn't.
    On another occasion, I was working on one monitor. When I returned to the main monitor and tried to access an item in the Edit menu, all of the menus were empty and white.
    I can't identify if this is a Mac OS issue or an Adobe issue. I'm wondering if other people have been experiencing this behavior and if so, how to correct it.

    Could be.  I tried restarting, closing and reopening Photoshop.  I just noticed this today, and I've been using CC 2014 since it came out.  I'm using it on a relatively new iMac, but I don't think it has happened before, though I could be wrong.  It's not the end of the world, but it is an annoyance.

  • Dual Monitor Behavior

    Hi All,
    New Mac Pro system with ATI 4870. Dual monitor setup, 23" cinema connected to mini display port and 30" cinema connected to DVI. The 23" is the default monitor during boot sequence with the 30" firing up after boot near complete. Any way to change this behavior, 30" followed by 23"?

    I just don't think it really matters unless your machine is not set for automatically logging in, or running verbose or single-user mode on boot-up. The login screen would just appear in the other (secondary) monitor. It might seem to be a hassle if you are constantly messing around with the boot sequence or constantly logging in and out, sleeping or screen-saver lock.
    If the 23" is your secondary (I'm assuming this is what you want) and the menubar is on the 30", I would leave well enough alone. Now if you wanted the 23" as the primary, you can use the Displays preference pane to move the menubar to the 23" (from the arrangement tab.) Just click and drag the little white bar. I'm pretty sure you know that but thought I would throw that out there.
    Performance-wise, there should not be any difference between the 2 displays.

  • Strange dual monitor behavior: mac pro + leopard + x1900xt + 2 dell 2001FPs

    I recently purchased a mac pro dual quad core with radeon x1900xt graphics card. Updated to 10.5.1. I have a dual monitor setup: 2 Dell 2001FPs connected to the x1900xt with dual-link DVI cables.
    Here's the problem:
    I want to use both monitors at their optimal resolution (1600x1200). I can get one monitor to run at 1600x1200 by changing the display preferences, but when I change the secondary monitor to something above 1280x1024, it goes dark, then doesn't come back on (the green light remains on, however). Occasionally while this is happening I will get a message on the black monitor telling me the computer is asleep. It obviously is not since I can see it is awake on the operating screen.
    Here's where it gets weird:
    I just found out that if I drag the mouse over into the darkened screen and then click a couple times, the monitor comes alive at the desired 1600x1200 resolution! If I restart from there, I get the primary monitor to come up upon startup, but I have to change the secondary monitor back down to 1280x1024, then back up to 1600x1200, then do the mystery clicking with the mouse!
    The problem occurs no matter which monitor is primary and no matter which slot is being used on the graphics card.
    To me this sounds like a driver problem, but I'm posting in the Mac Pro forum to see if any others have purchased the same configuration and have similar issues.

    It appears I have solved my problem...for the time being.
    1. rechecked all connections, replaced cable on secondary monitor with new (no change in behavior)

    The message above occurred each time I booted the mac pro and I think also when I changed resolutions on the monitors. This appeared to me to be a call to the specialized Apple Display extensions and preferences, not for non-apple displays.
    Resolution:
    I went into /System/Library/MonitorPanels/ and copied the AppleDisplay folder to the desktop and renamed it to XXXX.old. I deleted the AppleDisplay folder from its previous directory (I left behind the Arrange.monitorPanel, Display.monitorPanel, Profile.monitorPanel and VGADisplay.monitorPanel files). I then rebooted. No problems since. I can change resolutions all I want and my secondary monitor kicks right in, never staying black.
    Note: this seems to work for me because I am using Dell monitors on the mac pro with the x1900xt graphics card. I wouldn't do this if you have monitor trouble, especially if you have an Apple Display, as it seems these files are important for those.

    I have a Mac Pro w/ ATI X1900 XT. I replaced the GeForce 7300 GT that came w/ the pro with this X1900 XT as an upgrade from Apple, purchased after the initial system purchase.
    I have a 30" Cinema display and a 20" HP LP2065 LCD (very nice, LG/Philips S-IPS panel, just like the 30" ACD).

    I have some odd behavior on the HP secondary screen. I never sleep the Mac Pro, but do sleep its screens. When they wake, the ACD 30 lights up right away. The HP does sometimes - but about half the time it takes 2-5 minutes for it to light. The LED goes amber to green right away, but the screen is black (and unbacklit) for a few mins. Sometimes I see random blue lines across the blackish screen of the HP before it goes normal. Sometimes it lights fine but I see a "stuck" mouse pointer - either arrow or the spinning wheel - on that 2nd screen, but the REAL pointer that's tied to mouse control is on the ACD 30. Only when I move the mouse to push the real pointer to 2nd screen (HP) does the "stuck" pointer disappear.
    Not sure if this is a problem w/ the HP or if it's some odd ATI thing. I had a 20" ACD hooked up as a 2ndary, before going to the 20" HP, and it exhibited none of these issues.
    I am using the HP rotated, in portrait mode, as the X1900 drivers support this.

  • Strange monitor behavior

    My Apple menu has started listing everything twice:
    Shutdown

    Restart

    Sleep

    And everything I select on the desktop has a great big rectangle around it. What's up?

    Duh! It was universal access! Had speakers turned down so couldn't hear voice over. Must have inadvertantly turned on with +F5 shortcut.

    I had identical issue
    Two interfaces on two different FEXes were INACTIVE. I have two Nexus 5596 in vPC and A/A FEXes.
    I also use config-sync feature.
    Very same configuration was applied to other ports on other FEXes and they were working with no problems.

    I checked VLAN status associated with this profile and it was active (of course it was, other ports were ok).
    I solved it by removing port profile from this port and re-applied it... voila, port changed state to up!
    Very very strange.

  • New to Mac:  my monitor using Windows was fine; I'm having problems now

    I'm trying to figure out if the basic problem is that I need a monitor designed for a Mac vs PC: I have a new Westinghouse monitor, 1024x768x60, that worked fine w/PC. I've flailed around with both the Mac Display & the physical monitor display settings.
    Basically the issue that I didn't experience w/PC is that the fonts are really small (eg, Mail) -- not WYSIWYG, even tho the Mac stuff is large (eg: To, Cc, menus, etc.). Also, the display (again, not the Mac stuff) is blurry (eg, what I'm typing here).
    Since the whole point of the Mac Mini is that I wouldn't needlessly replicate my fairly new monitor & keyboard & mouse, I'm trying to understand how to maximize my existing hardware (I've already given up & am replacing my fairly new keyboard & mouse).
    Thanks for any help. Must add, the mac has eliminated my existing PC problems.

    I've also struggled with getting my monitor (Viewsonic VX2245wm 1600x1050) to work seemlessly with my Mini. The Mini wouldn't always detect the monitor and I would get a non-native resolution that would look stretched or fuzzy when I restarted or woke-up the Mini. That was if I didn't get a blank screen with a "no signal" message.
    I'm not sure if this will solve your problem, but here are the steps I followed most recently to get the Mini to recognize the monitor and provide the native resolution required (caveat - I'm not an expert, but this is what I've pieced together through reading other posts and following advice given to me in regard to questions I've posted. There are a many more knowledgable people that might chime-in so take my recommendations/explanations with a grain of salt. And as far as I can tell, you won't break anything following these steps):
    1. Use Finder to search for a couple plist files with the term windowserver in the title (use windowserver as a search term). One will have alphnumeric characters. Here are examples from my Mini:

    com.apple.windowserver.plist
    Apparently, these files store display related preferences and can cause erratic display behavior. Move these files to the trash and empty the trash. They'll be recreated when you restart your Mini. (search other posts for this and you'll find more details....it's a commonly recommended step for fixing display behavior)
    2. Shut down the Mini and reset the PMU. Search the support pages and discussion board for the exact steps.
    3. Reset the PRAM when restarting (after following the steps to reset the PMU). You'll find the exact steps in the Apple support section. Just search on PRAM.
    4. Use finder to search for your windowserver plist files to confirm that new ones were in fact created according to the date/time stamp.
    When I restarted my Mini after following these steps the Mini was recognizing the display as indicated by the presence of the monitor type at the top of the Displays window in System Preferences. I had to try these steps a couple times to get the Mini to recognize the display (maybe I screwed up somewhere the first time), but since then it's been working flawlessly which is nice because the monitor behavior was driving me nuts.
    Again, I'm not an expert and you may get different recommendations or better explanations regarding exactly how these steps reset the display preferences, but I don't think the above mentioned steps will cause any problems outside of possibly resetting the time to some default.
    One other option I'm exploring is an application called SwitchResX which apparently allows you to manually control the display settings and add resolutions not provided by the Mini. Haven't had to resort to that since going through the steps above.
    Good luck and please share your results if you follow the steps above as I'm trying to develop a better understanding of what else I might try should the problem surface again.

  • What exactly does monitor calibration do?

    I have used a monitor calibration software (with a hardware colorimeter). I know it makes the display image "better". But I want to know more detail.
    There seems to be two stages of improvement.
    The first stage benefits everything that displays anything, including photos in browsers.
    The second stage benefits only software with color management like photoshop.
    What are the benefits for the for the first stage?
    It changes the gamma or linearity of the display to 2.2 (for PC)
    It removes color cast so that grey do not have a color tint.
    Anything else?
    I assume it is at the second stage (inside color managed software) that a photo would look the same across different computers and different monitors.
    Why not turn on color management in windows so that all software are automatically color managed?
    Does this also mean that inside a non color managed web browser (which is most of them), the same photo on a web page could look differently on different monitors, even if they are all calibrated by the same calibration software? But they still look more similar to each other than if they were displayed on un-calibrated monitors, right?

    The correct terms for what you described as first and second are Monitor Calibration  and Monitor Characterization or Profiling.
    Calibration brings the monitor to a desired state by changing the behavior of the monitor or said in other words, alters how the monitor displays colors.
    During the calibration process the monitor calibration software first changes directly or through the user all that is possible with the hardware controls of the monitor to bring its display to the desired state and then whatever was not possible with the hardware controls will be accomplished automatically also as much as possible by using the video card.
    Profiling is first checking and then describing the display characteristics of the monitor in a monitor profile file. A monitor profile file, among other things, describes how the monitor displays color values like the RGB numbers. Profiling doesn't change the monitor behavior. The profile file is used by the color managed programs to change the color appearance of the images they use by sending the appropriate color values to the video card. These color values may be different from the actual color values of the image.
    On theory, you don't need calibration in order to have properly characterized monitor. All the color managed programs need, is a monitor profile that describes how the monitor displays color values. However on practice if the monitor is calibrated as much as possible to a desired state, it can have much more and better display capabilities than a monitor without calibration. A desired state of a monitor is when its full capabilities can be used with certain display targets. These targets are specified by the user and are usually the white and black points, color temperature, and gamma.
    To illustrate how a monitor without calibration can be a problem, I will give the following example. If you reduce only one of the RGB signals significantly, lets say the Blue, by using the hardware controls of the monitor then all neutral colors will become yellowish. With such monitor display, to get neutral colors, the color managed programs have to reduce also the other two signals Red and Green using the video card to the lowest denominator of the reduced Blue and this in general will limit the range of the entire color space available on your monitor. And since color management is about simulating on your monitor other color spaces (device and non-device specific) if you have limited display capabilities your monitor will not be able to adequately simulate other color spaces no matter how well the color managed programs try to achieve that. And also, as you already guessed that, in this example the non-color managed programs will display everything yellowish on such monitor because they don't have color management capabilities to correct it.

  • Opening CS4 fIles on a second monitor, the way it worked in CS3.

    This drove me nuts for well over a year. I guess this is a "tip" of sorts for dual monitor users who recently switched from CS3 to CS4 and expect files to open on the 2nd monitor.
    With the advent of CS4, the ability to automatically open a few dozen files across my 2nd monitor became impossible unless the Application Frame was set to cover the 2nd monitor with its opaque grey background. What I missed was the ability to have a totally unencumbered view of the 2nd monitor's desktop..the way it worked in CS3 and earlier….and most importantly: to have anything I opened, appear on the 2nd monitor.
    Without the Application Frame active and positioned to cover my 2nd monitor, loading files would always appear under the Palettes on my 1st (smaller) monitor. (It's the way I work. 30" 2nd monitor on my left and main 24" in front of the keyboard).
    A couple of days ago, I accidentally clicked the yellow "Hide" button in the corner of the Application Frame. As expected, it hid the Application Frame into the Dock and left the window free.
    Here's the unexpected thing: Loading a file (or multiple files) continue to tile diagonally down the 2nd monitor, the way they do when the Application Frame was visible.
    It's almost perfect…the tiling spacing is still larger than it was in CS3 and the tiling starts where the bottom of the Application Frame's menu bar was positioned before it was hidden. But it's as close to CS3 dual monitor behavior workaround as I've found.
    It'd sure be nice if Adobe implemented a "Hide Application Frame" View Menu item in CS5.

    The screen dimensions are "right," but I don't want it to use up any more space on-screen than is in the window.

  • Monitoring Performance - HTTP 500

    I have a system load testing and have been getting more than a 2:1 ratio of
    Error 500's:
    Error 500--Internal Server Error
    From RFC 2068 Hypertext Transfer Protocol -- HTTP/1.1:
    10.5.1 500 Internal Server Error
    The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from
    fulfilling the request.
    I am watching my default execute queue and it appears fine (a large
    percentage of idle threads).. My default execute queue has 50 threads with
    60% dedicated to socket connections (I have been playing around with this
    number) - My test environment has 40 simultaneous threads making HTTP
    requests with a 1 second delay between requests..
    Other than viewing the results of my test, how can I detect when WLS is
    returning an error and not processing a request (through JMX)?
    The monitoring behavior I expected when I saw this error was a huge
    utilization of threads in the execute queue - equal to 60% * 50 threads =
    30, but I consistently have 35 - 40 threads idle.. Any ideas?
    Furthermore I don't see any other database errors being generated in my log
    files (and I have my servlet entry-point coded to throw a ServletException
    when that occurs - so I should see that).
    One last note, in my tests I have a request that does not invoke any
    Servlets or JSP (strictly HTTP) and it is not generating this error..

    Look in the weblogic.log file for a stack trace. That should tell you exactly

  • How to tell if VLAN added to 6248s?

    We are working to solve a connectivity problem with virtual machines on a Distributed Virtual Switch.
    They are connected to a distributed port group that is configured with a VLAN, and the VLAN ID is entered in the distributed port group's properties as you would expect.
    When I look in UCS Manager, I see the VLAN exists and of course this maps to the VLAN on the distributed virtual port group in vSphere.
    The VMs still have no connectivity, even though things look right in vCenter and in UCS Manager.
    How can I check on the 6248s to see if the VLAN has been added to the trunk down from the upstream switches? 
    And/or is there any other way I can verify the VLAN is accessible?

    Glad to see issue is figured out already, just to add a detail for future reference in case you want to see VLANs allowed for a particular uplink.
    You can find out allowed VLANs on a vEthernet interface with the following commands:
    A# connect  nxos a/b  <<< a OR b depending on which FI you want to investigate
    A(nxos)# sh pinning border-interfaces  << Will show uplink interface(s) each vEth is pinned to to get to the outside world
