Sybase 5.5 Migration to Oracle

Hoping for some input...
What is the best option for migrating application data only (will not be migrating the application and thus don't need the procedures, triggers, etc) into Oracle? We're on Sybase SQL Anywhere 5.5 with read-only privileges so it looks like the Conversion Toolkit or the Migration Workbench will work for us.
Thanks in advance.

Sorry - meant to say those options WILL NOT work for us.

  • Sybase System 11 Migration to Oracle 8i

We are trying to migrate a Sybase system 11 database to Oracle 8.1.5 using the Migration Workbench tool. Some tables contain more than 20 million records. Is it possible to break the data migration so that we can exclude som e tables from the migration. It would be quite helpfull saving the script that the Migration Tool uses and then customizing it.

Your best best is to use the SQL*Loader script generation facility in OMWB. It will create the bcp extract batch file, and an SQL*Loader batch file, along with the SQL*Loader .CTL control files. You can then edit the batch files to decide on which tables you wish to load.

  • Migrating Sybase "timestamp" data type to Oracle DB

    Hi,
We are migrating huge Application currently running on Sybase database
to Oracle 10.2.0.3 (500+ Tables and Stored Procedures).
Have following questions regarding this Migration.
    1) Many of the Sybase Tables have column which is of Sybase data type "timestamp".
Do you have any recommendation what is the data type to be used in Oracle for
migrating "timestamp" data type in Sybase?
    2) How should we migrate existing data and business logic residing in Sybase for
data columns of Sybase data type "timestamp" ?
Given below are details on how we use Sybase timestamp Column in our Application
and we are trying to arrive at the best Solution that is possible for migrating
all those Tables and related business logic to Oracle.
We have following Control Table in Sybase which has column of timestamp data type and
    some other Business keys.
sp_help EQP_IES_CRE_TIMESTAMP (This is similar to desc <table> command in Oracle)
    EQP_IES_CRE_TIMESTAMP,dbo,user table
    default,Nov 14 2001 10:39AM
    CRE_TIMESTAMP ,timestamp,8,,,0,,,,0
    REF_NUM ,char,30,,,0,,,,0
    REC_UPD_DT ,datetime,8,,,1,,,,0
    EQP_IES_CRE_TIMESTAMPI1,clustered, unique located on default, CRE_TIMESTAMP, REF_NUM, REC_UPD_DT,0,0,0,
Following is the overall logic used in Sybase
-- Step 1: Based on Event, populate Control Table with new Row.
-- CRE_TIMESTAMP timestamp Column gets auto-populated by Sybase
    insert EQP_IES_CRE_TIMESTAMP (REF_NUM, REC_UPD_DT)
    values (@uuid_ref_num, @event_cre_dt)
Since CRE_TIMESTAMP is auto-populated, it does not appear in above INSERT statement.
-- Step 2: Store timestamp value populated by Sybase in previous step,
-- to variable @event_timestamp. This value would be referenced
-- later in other SQL statements
    select @event_timestamp = CRE_TIMESTAMP
    from EQP_IES_CRE_TIMESTAMP
    where REF_NUM = @uuid_ref_num
    and REC_UPD_DT = @event_cre_dt
-- Sample value for @event_timestamp could be '001c0000182f2089'
-- It is not very readable or understandable
-- Step 3: Delete Control Table entry made in Step 1
    delete EQP_IES_CRE_TIMESTAMP from EQP_IES_CRE_TIMESTAMP
    where CRE_TIMESTAMP = @event_timestamp
-- Step 4: Make use of saved timestamp value from Step 2 to trigger queries
-- against other Tables that have timestamp Columns
-- Some sample queries are as shown below
    delete eqp_staging
    where event_timestamp > @event_timestamp;
    insert into eqp_movement values(@event_timestamp, ......other columns) ;
Any idea how above Table and logic could be migrated to Oracle DB
We would also like to know how data values that currently exist
in Sybase Tables should be populated in Oracle .
Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks
    Auroprem

    Hi All,
    Thanks for your responses.
We have decided on Solution to migrate "timestamp" Column from Sybase to Oracle, that is
    specific to our Application needs.
    Following is what we decided:
    1) Create RAW Column in Oracle which would contain data Replicated from Sybase "timestamp" Column as is.
    2) Create additional Column of INTEGER data type to store number equivalent of Sybase "timestamp" column
which would be more usable and consummable in Oracle as compared to RAW datatype.
    3) Write Row-Level INSERT/UPDATE Trigger on migrated Oracle Table to populate INTEGER Column using
    SQL Function TO_NUMBER(<raw_column_value>, 'xxxxxxxx').
    4) Applications that access this Table, upon migration to Oracle, will now start referencing INTEGER Column
newly defined, and populated via Trigger.
Please let us know if you see any issues with this approach

  • Can I use SQL developer for a Sybase IQ migration to Oracle?

    Hello,
Can I use SQL developer for a Sybase IQ migration to Oracle?
Currently in the supported list appears only Sybase Adaptive Server 12 and 15.

  • Migration from Sybase 11.9.1 to Oracle 7.3.4

Does the Oracle Migration Workbench 1.2.2 support database migration from Sybase 11.9.1 to Oracle 7.3.4?
If not, is there any work-around or any other tool? Can we still use Migration Workbench for this migration?
    Thanks.

It is probably best to use the latest version of the workbench (1.2.5.0.0). Migration to 7.3 is not supported but should work except for the newer features, for example use long instead of blob and clob, and do not use 8i temporary tables.

    Steven,
You could try SQL Developer Migration Workbench
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/migration/workbench/index.html
    Oracle Migration Workbench
The Oracle Migration Workbench is a tool that simplifies the process of migrating Sybase, Informix, and DB2 databases to the Oracle platform (Oracle9i and Oracle10g)*. The Oracle Migration Workbench migrates the entire database schema, including triggers and stored procedures, in an integrated, environment

  • Sql server migration to oracle -Sample vs actual dump

I am able to successfully migrate the sample data provided in the demo for 'offline captured' option. My original SQL-server file is with extension .BAK which I am able restore in SQL server. How can I create the file in the same format as sample from SQL server data base? in order to simulate the same steps for migration to oracle..
    demo
    Thanks,
    Hesh.

    Hesh,
I am still not sure what you mean by using a .BAK file.
The OCP file is generated from SQL*Developer as follows -
    2.6.2 Offline Capture
To perform an offline capture of an IBM DB2, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, or
Sybase Adaptive Server database, you create a set of offline capture scripts, run these
scripts outside SQL Developer to create the script output (a dump of the third party
metadata tables), and load the script output (the .ocp file containing the converted
    model) using SQL Developer.
    ■ To create the script file (a Windows .bat file or a Linux or UNIX .sh file) and
related files, click Tools, then Migration, then Third Party Database Offline
Capture, then Create Database Capture Scripts.
When this operation completes, you are notified that several files (.bat, .sql, .ocp)
have been created, one of which is the controlling script. You must run the
controlling script (outside SQL Developer) to populate the object capture
properties (.ocp) file with information about the converted model.
    ■ To load the converted model from the object capture properties (.ocp) file
generated by the offline capture controlling script, click Tools, then Migration,
then Third Party Database Offline Capture, then Load Database Capture Script
    Output.
This is all detailed in the SQL*Developer User Guide referred to earlier.
Have you referred to the documentation ?
If you can explain again exactly what you are trying to do and the steps you have done so far then we can help further.

    Mike

  • Migration from Oracle 9i 32 bit to Oracle 10G 64 bit on Windows 2003 Server

I am working on migrating Oracle 9i 32 bit to Oracle 10G 64 bit on Windows 2003 from Old server to new server. We have db around 500 GB and 3 schemas. I installed Oracle 10G on new server, created tablespaces, schema's blah blah and now doing export and import at schema level from old server to new server.
Import is taking more than 4 to 5 hours on new server. My manager is saying, window time is bit longer and he wants me to try possiblities to make this process faster. Can some one help me on this, to use the best possible method to complete this process faster?
Will below step work, if I try?
If I install, oracle 9i and 10g both on new server in different home directories and take the hot backup from old machine and restore on new machine in 9i home directory and use the upgrade configuration assistant from 10g and do the upgrade? Pls advice.

    It looks good.
I have one question in below steps:
To migrate an Oracle9i or older database to an Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1) database for 64-bit Windows:
    1 Perform steps 1 - 11 in "Migrating an Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1) Database".
2 Shut down the database on the 64-bit computer:
    SQL> SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE;
    3 Start the database migration:
    SQL> STARTUP MIGRATE;
4 Migrate the database as described in Chapter 3, "Upgrading a Database to the New Oracle Database 10g Release" in Oracle Database Upgrade Guide.
In step 4, it says, migrate database as described in chapter 3. In chapter 3, it says, to do the upgrade the process using dbca or manually. Pls confirm whether do the upgrade process after issuing startup migrate or not.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Difference between upgrdae and migration about oracle database

Difference between upgrdae and migration about oracle database
    please give the comments

Well, the question is almost philosophic...<br>
In 9i, there is a Migration Guide whereas in 10g there is a Upgrade Guide.<br>
Furthermore, in 9i, there is the command line startup migrate whereas in 10g that's startup upgrade.
Somebody think upgrade when go to new release, and migration when go to new version.<br>
Others think upgrade when new version replace database in place, and migration when new version include a move of database.<br>
Another point of view is : upgrade is for technical, and migration for application/data.<br>
    <br>
Well, after these explanations, your upgrade/migratation notion will not be more clear, but I think that is not very important, only a terminology game. The most important is to know what you need : new version or new release.<br>

  • Migration from Oracle App Server 10.1.3.5 to WebLogic 12 - Expected issues?

    Hi all,
the company I work for wants to migrate its Oracle Application Server 10.1.3.5 (with JRE 1.6) to WebLogic 12 and we need to guess which kind of remediation could be needed to have all web-apps still working.
The concerned applications are using dated technologies:
    direct JDBC connections to db
    JPA 1.0
connection pools with Oracle JDBC drivers
some apps are compiled with Java 1.4, some others with Java 1.6
    servlet 2.3
    JSP 2.0
We do not expect to come accross big issues but I'm not skilled on this kind of matters so I would like to receive seggestions or alerts from experts. Any remark will be appreciated.
    Thank you all.

  • What are the Issues in Migration from oracle 8i to oracle 10g

    Hi,
Can you let me know what are the issues that i face when i migrate from oracle 8i to oracle 10g. I will be very thankful if you give me a list of issues that you face while migrating from 8i to 10g

In addition to Max's reply, you must be aware that you have to test your applications agains 10g database before you actually upgrade the database.
If you use CBO, it may produce different execution plans for one query when you run it in 8i and 10g. This may affect your application performances, which you don't like to happen.
Also you have to decide how much downtime you can afford during the migration. Can you afford some downtime and how much? If you can't than this makes the situation more complicated.
How big is your database? You may end up only with simple export/import solution using export import utility.
The bottom line is, whatever you decide, you must test your applications running against 10g database before you actually upgrade your database.
