T43 & "Preparing to turn off the monitor"

A recently got a second-hand T43 (I will avoid the current shallowscreen laptops as long as I can!), and one thing that bugs me is that Fn+F3 "turn off screen" seldom works (Windows XP SP3). Usually I just get the dialog saying "Preparing to turn off the monitor", but nothing happens after that. I read somewhere that Windows Media Player can cause this when running, but it is not running. And why should it matter anyway? Is there any way to force the screen to be turned off despite running programs?
Also, it would be nice if this action locked the screen, or if it was available after locking the screen. Is this possible in any way?

Hi! This is completely Windows-specific, and I found it on a website, so I don't take credit for it. Hopefully you do know how to use JNI, so here's the C code you could try out (no I haven't tried it yet).
JNIEXPORT void JNICALL Java_JNative_turnOffMonitor (JNIEnv *env, jclass cls)
    SendMessage (HWND_BROADCAST, WM_SYSCOMMAND, SC_MONITORPOWER, 2);
}2 turns off the monitor, HWND_BROADCAST sends the message to all top-level windows, 1 sets the monitor to low power and -1 switches the monitor back on. Please use at own risk, and you'll probably want to have some more error handling in your code if you do plan to use it. You will need to include windows.h and user32.lib (unless you are dynamically linking) for the code to compile.
Hope it helps.
Cheers
P.S. Here's the website I found it in (note, the code's in Delphi, so I just took the API calls, and modified the first parameter to HWND_BROADCAST). http://chiragdalal.tripod.com/howto/monitor_on_off.html

  • Can I turn off the monitor for Mac Mini and use it as a music server?

I am in the process of upgrading my PC most likely to a Mac product. With the non-server version of Mac OS X, can I turn off the monitor connected to a Mac Mini and use it as a streaming server? Or I have to get the server version of OS X to do that?

I plan to run Logitech Media Server on the Mac to stream music to players. Each player interacts with the Logitech Media Server to select songs to stream. When I turn on a player, it will wake up the computer from the sleep mode.
Currently, this Logitech Media Server runs on a Windows Vista machine and it will keep the PC from entering sleep mode while playing the songs. After I play the last song, the PC will start the idle count down and then enter into sleep mode.
Do you see any problem with my intended use of a Mac Mini?

  • When mirroring - can I turn off the monitor on my Mac...?

I just set up my MacBook Pro with my AppleTV and everything is working nicely. However, It would be even better if I could get my computer monitor to turn off while I'm viewing on my TV.
    Is this possible?

    Actually, the answer is YES!
Thought it best to post here again because I discovered that while Mirroring, turning off the monitor on my MacBook Pro is possible (despite a few replies here that it cannot be done). Its super easy to do, just dim the monitor until it goes completely dark, and continue to use your computer as it is displayed on the TV. The trick is not to close the monitor down, that will put the computer to sleep.
While I was hoping I could also achieve the same result while my MacBook is connected to my Cinema display, it seems the dimming capability on the Cinema display is limited to getting very dim, but not turning off completely.
I'll keep researching this some more and if I have any more updates I will post back to share -- hopefully there are other users who will find this info helpful.
For now, I will be using my TV as my primary display while my MacBook Pro's monitor is turned off.

  • How can I turn off the monitor but not the computer on my touchsmart 310..

I leave my computer on at night to keep wireless network going, but I want to turn off just the monitor. All of the advice I've seen is to turn off the touchscreen feature -not the monitor itself. Thank you.

You can set the timing for the display to turn off.
    Try this:
    Click:
    Start.
    Control Panel.
    Hardware and Sound.
    Power Options.
On the left bar you'll find Choose when to turn off the display.
At Turn off the display:  there is a drop dowm menu to choose the number of minutes before the display turns off.  Make your selection.
Try that and see if it works for you.
I hope this is what you were looking for,

  • Turn off the monitoring

    Hi all,
Does anyone knows about how to turn off the BPM monitoring so that so many tickets will not be created.

    Hi,
that depends on the release u use ... For release <SPS15 u can unasighn the notification method via the TA rz21.
If u use CEN monitoring its easy to unassign --> just goto TA RZ21 --> start: Technical Infrstructure --> configure central systems --> assign central autoreactions
The new mask gives u the possibility in the bottom frame to unassign methods.
If u use lacal monitoring (that u will see when u start the assign central autoreaction and no method where assigned) --> than it will be more difficult u have to unassign every MTE from the auto react methode ... Or u modify the the auto react methode

  • Turning off the monitor

How do you turn the MacBook monitor off? I can't find it anywhere on Apple Support pages or Google.

Ohhh... I had been searching for that answer ever since I got my macbook. Thought would have preferred a direct shortcut (as there is one for entering sleep mode), but anyways, really simple and straightforward solution.

  • How do I turn off computer monitor when watching DVD movie on TV monitor?

I think this is really a Leopard question because it involves setting up 2 monitors in System Preferences within OSX. 1) I have a wide screen TV connected to my iMac (Intel White Late 2006) through the Mini-DVI port and a separate audio cable. This connection works fine. 2) The purpose of the TV screen is only to watch DVDs using the DVD player and iDVD in my iMac. 3) In System Preferences->Displays->Arrangement, both my computer monitor and the TV screen appear as separate monitors. I have the setting to mirror each other. With this setting, the DVD movie plays on both the iMac computer screen and on the TV screen. 4) FINALLY, MY QUESTION: When watching a DVD on the TV screen, I would like to turn off the monitor in my iMac so that the screen is dark (in sleep mode to save power, etc.); I want only the TV screen to display the movie. How do I turn off only the iMac screen? Thank you. Dale

That's impossible. It can only be done on a laptop but not on an iMac.

  • My user process crash when I turn on the monitor

I have a Mac Pro 2009 with a radeon 4870 and a Benq V2400W LCD monitor (24") connected with DVI. Since about 8 month, or about the same time I upgraded to 10.6, I began to notice that a random number of user process crash randomly when I turn on my monitor when the computer was already running. (Like when I am doing something else and close the monitor but leave the computer on). For example, I turn off the monitor, go to the grocery, come back, turn on the monitor and see Safari, Dock, Finder, WebUIserver crash all at the same time.
At the exact time I turned the monitor on !
It very random. I can only see one application that crash, or I can see nearly all my user process crash. I never saw any kernel panic nor admin process crash and if I don't turn off and on my monitor, my computer never crash !
6 month ago, it wasn't a problem since it occurred like once per 2 or 3 weeks, but in the last month it occurred like 2 times a day.
I tried to : -Reinstall OS 10.6 over my current installation
-Reformat & do a clean install
-Reformat & install nothing except few app (iLife & iWork)
    -Change my main HD
-Run Hardware test for hour and hours without any error
-Disable computer sleep, display sleep and HD sleep
    -Pray Steve Job.
Since 5 day, it run fine but I no longer turn off my monitor. I just set the energy saving setting to 5 min. for the display and it work like a charm.
Since a display can only receive the signal from the video card, I doubt it can make my process crash. Can it be my video card that have a "wake up" problem or it a OS 10.6 bug ?
I have read hundred of Console lines, but nothing occur when I turn on or off the screen.
    Thanks

It could be a problem with the video adapter, but there are other things to eliminate first. Does the monitor have a USB hub that's plugged into the Mac? Are you turning off the monitor with its power switch or are you actually removing power by unplugging the cord or turning off an outlet strip? Does it behave differently if you turn off the power using whatever method you haven't been?

  • Cannot turn off MBP monitor/display

I have a 15inch MBP running Boot Camp and XP. I am trying to use the "turn off monitor" setting in power options from the contol panel. However when the time is up it does not turn off the monitor...
Also when the "turn off monitor" feature is suppose to trigger, it disables my screensaver.
I don't want my computer to sleep, I just want to turn the monitor off. Right now I just dim the screen until it fades a little but I can still see my desktop screen so I know it is on.
Can anyone tell me how I can turn off the monitor?

Support are now quoting Apple's engineers as saying it is now "expected behaviour" under Lion for the MBP's internal display to reactivate upon opening the lid, even if you want to use only your external display. A new version of the clamshell mode-related knowledgebase article (replacing HT3131) is due shortly confirming this.
    This is despite:
    - the obvious temperature-related benefits that were achievable (under Snow Leopard) by opening your MBP lid whilst continuing to output solely to, say, a 27" cinema display
    - the waste of energy and inefficient use of graphics processing power in needlessly running two active screens (ie if running your MBP in clamshell mode would otherwise make it too hot and/or noisy)
    - the negative longer-term impact on the battery and other components from running the MBP any hotter than it needs to be.
If you would like to have the previous behaviour restored, please lobby Apple to change how Lion handles clamshell mode. Options available to them include changing Lion's expected behaviour or adding a user-selectable option within System Preferences.

    Hi,
    Power Button Lockout is displayed.
The monitor's Power Button Lockout function is enabled.
Press and hold the Power button for 10 seconds to unlock the Power button function.
If the above doesn't work then try a monitor reset.  Unplug the monitor’s power cord and hold down the monitor’s power button for 30-60 seconds. Plug the monitor back in and power it up.

miniDisplay to HDMI : How to turn off the Dual Monitor output when the adapter is attached and the TV is off ? And will keeping the adapter connected even if it is not in use, cause damage to the adapter ?

I have my external monitor/tv setup of the left. If I leave the adapter attached with the TV off, I am still able to cross the border/boundry of my MBP screen ! As instead of detecting a TV, the MBP is detecting the adapter as a screen. I do not want to damage my thunderbolt/miniDisplay port by plugging and unpluggin the unit each and every time.
