Template margins and content?

I have a few questions about templates that I cannot find an answer to:
1.) I created a template based on a html page w/css, and a horizontal spry bar attached; when I designate some of the text as editable regions the page shifts, along with margins etc. (I have attached a before & after page of one section I tried to designate, and what it looks like after *I only selected the text as the editable region)
2.) Why can't a div tag or heading tag be designated as an editable region?
3.) Since I created the template off a html page, why is it that if I make changes to (lets say) the template that the html page changes too....I thought that even though I created the template from a html page that Dreamweaver would still recognize the 2 as being completely different pages and would not change both?
I have bought the essential guide to Dreamweaver cs4 w/ajax, and php but it doesn't (along with any other book I looked at) give insight to quirky details like this. Is there a website that has details to questions like this?

Remember that the Design View is not a WYSIWYG browser.You can get closer with Live View, but that's not a browser either.
If you have designated areas as editable regions on your Template and have Invisible Elements showing ... like the blue tab at the top of each editable region...alignment of your divs will APPEAR to be displaced. Those blue tabs DO take up a little bit of real estate, you know! Turn off the Invisible Elements, and your layout will "snap" back into place.
Why do you think a div cannot be designated as an editable region? You can either include the whole div, tags and all...in which case the tags will become editable...or include just the contents of the div, which will protect the div tag from harm. Same with a heading tag. You just have to be careful of your nesting, and not include the open tag in the editable region if you have not also included the closing tag.
You can also designate attributes of tags as editable.
If you have created a Template and indicated when you saved it as a Template that you wanted pages updated when the Template changes (one of the more obvious reasons for using a Template, by the way), yes, changes to the Template will propagate to the child pages made from that Template. The only parts that will change on the child page, though, will be in the ineditable regions.
The deal with a Template is that it is not, strictly speaking, a PAGE, it is a Template for creating pages. Two different beasts altogether. LIke the difference between a cookie cutter and a cookie. They may both be the same shape, but only one of them is a cookie.
I think you would enjoy running through some of the tutorials here on the Adobe site. They will give you additional insight into the workings of Dreamweaver CS4. The tutorials and the Adobe TV videos are well worth the time you take to do and view them.

Having problems when aligning footer div and content div close together, in the browsers they are wi

My problem is when I paste text or paste anything in div tag. I have a container that contains everything. I have a content div that contains content. I also have a footer. When I align the footer at the end to content div which is in the container, it looks good until I look at it in a the different browsers, the content and footer are so wide apart. I've tried everything I could to make the browsers look as close as what I do in dreamweaver cs4. Is there a solution to this problem?

Absolutely positioned divisions are NOT a good primary layout method. Here's why:

You should use a CSS with default CSS positioning (which is no positioning at all). And then use margins, padding and floats to align elements on the page. Also, if you want the page height to flex to content (as it should), remove the height property from divisions containing text.

Error after updating field and content type

Hi,
I have a feature with a custom list and content type.
I changed one field type from Text to Note, and made the same change in my Schema.xml file.
But after deploying I get an error when I visit my list.
"The file name you specified could not be used. It may be the name of an
existing file or directory, or you may not have permission to access
the file".
I have several sites with the same list, and all gives the same error.
What I understand from the ULS logs it can't find my schema file, but when I look at the 14 hive it is there.
ULS
Failed to open the file 'schema.xml'.
Failed to retrieve the list schema for feature {4D3315CB-7F20-4DB3-9CB3-258AC110F9BC}, list template 21973; expected to find it at: "".
Any ideas about how to fix this?
The text expected to find it at: "" can be the problem as I have my schema file in a folder named Correspondence List.
And in the 14 hive I find the schema at 14\TEMPLATE\FEATURES\my feature\Correspondence List\Schema.xml

Business Catalyst templates not containing content in Muse built site

I am currently upgrading a clients website and have recently got into designing using Muse and thought I would try out the BUsiness Catalyst system to host it all etc. I wanted to use muse for the more static opages and the the blog for case studies and the ecommerce section for the product catalogue (even though we will not be selling online).
All was going swimmingly until I found the pages I had created for the main template pages {tag_pagecontent} or any other module on that note. The site search results was doing it too if the results can over a certain length. Its seemed that the page would be stuck at a standard height. I have dragged the content box down to meet the footer guide so in theory it expands the page when it has to but for some reason this isnt working for me. I am not sure if it is how I have sut up the footer or the page or the way I have the master pages working or something. I have tried various options but am about to give up. I either have to bin business catalyst or just use muse to create the whole catalogue but with over 200 products this could take some time.
I woudld appreciated some help from some more experienced users or techincal heads. I hope it is an easy fix or there is some way around it.

It took too long to get an answer so I am now using another system that doesnt have this problem. Hopefully when I use Muse again I wont have this problem. Sorry.

Using differnent templates for same content

Hi all,
I have an issue where we have a Page Group with lots of pages/sub-pages.
There are three different User Groups, Internal, Customer and Supplier.
I need to display the same content but with different templates (look and feel), one for the Internal, one for the customer and one for the supplier.
Can this be done using Oracle Portal 10.1.14? If so, how?

If you mean an HTML templates, you could use a CSS-based design and include logic in "oracle" tags in your HTML template that chooses the CSS based on group membership. You could use the wwsec_api.is_user_in_group function to check for group membership and display the appropriate CSS as a result.
If you're talking about three different portal templates, I'd recommend publishing your content as page portlets, and putting those portlets on three different pages, each having a different view privilege.
Or perhaps some combination of techniques would work.
I'm not sure what that has to do with having lots of pages/sub-pages". Are you trying to reuse more content and lower the number of pages?

Can LiveCycle Designer produce a flat PDF, not form, as a template for dynamic content?

Yes that means LiveCycle Designer .....the XDP is an XML file that describes the template that you want. It is turned into a PDF by the Designer as well as the LC Server I mentioned. The Designer creates interactive content (not what you asked for), the server can do the same as well as flat PDFs. I mentioned the batch mode because that is how people generally use it or they use it for real time creation of the reports but it tends to be high volume (it is a server product so it will bepriced that way). You can create an XDP that has text and "floating fields" on it. Floating Fields are special in that you can merge data with the template and once the data is put into the field it is turned into text (non-interactive). This woudl be useful for testing (requires a hands on approach) but if there is any kind of volume that you are looking for this will not be useful. The server side can be automated so that no human intervention is required.

0 margins and 0 padding still not displaying correctly in Internet Explorer

Hi I have designed a page for my site that works perfectly in safari and firefox but of course in internet explorer it doesn't. The content under the slideshow is meant to line up with the edge of the slideshow. This is the linkhttp://www.kimberleywebdesign.com.au/Links.html.
The divs and the tags within them, have 0 margins and 0 padding with the exception of top and bottom padding, so even if internet explorer doubled my margins - double nothing is nothinng ?? I am trying to understand why the problem occurred?

My understanding is that IE misinterprets text-align:center in the #wrapper div.
Change:
#wrapper {

to
#wrapper {
width:48.75em;/*780px*/
margin: 0 auto;
text-align:center;}
Then add text-align: left to each div where the text needs to be left aligned
e.g.

and so on. Worked OK for me in IE8.

Add this tip, taken from the link above, for good measure:
"This gets IE up to scratch. However this is the step I always forget. In Mozilla, if you reduce the size of the browser window, half of your centred div hangs off the left of the page. XML Parser and Content-type/encoding problem

Can I create multiple presentation templates against one content item?

I want to create multiple presentation templates that publish the same content item in different ways.
As far as I can tell from the publisher GUI this is not possible.
Am I missing something?

It may not be feasible to have two PT associated with a DT technically. But there is a workaround / solution for your requirement. thats what i meant in my prev post.
To accomplish your requirement in a simple fashion try doing this
1) copy the contents of all PT, DT and Content Items with all its folders in the _NEWS (portlet templates) folder to a new folder called 'PortletA' (or) make use of the News portlet template to create a portlet
2) Now modify the DT's and PT's according to your requirement.
3) Create a portlet using "Published Content" webservice and configure the 'Main' to your portlet.
4) if you create and pblish new article, you can find two html's are getting published.
If this doesn't resolve your requirement,
Create two sets of Dt & Pt's. In the article PT, try to add the other Pt as "related items to publish", so on publishing one the other one gets published.

Templates Deleting and Customizing

I would like to delete all of the templates from the template list that appears in Template Chooser and substitute several templates that I have developed for our office. I am able to add templates to My Templates, but I am unable to create new groups or subgroups in the Template Chooser and I can't delete the default templates that came with the application.
Any help or instructions would be greatly appreciated?

Pages' templates are buried deep inside the package file. You can get to them by navigating like this: control-click on Pages icon in the Finder, then navigate through these folders -- Contents > Resources > Templates. I would strongly advise you not to delete the blank templates.
Regarding subgroups in the template chooser, I think you can nest folders in the My Templates folder.

Template page and CSS dialog box.

Basically, this is an issue/bug for me. I had something working on Dreamweaver CS6 (CS3, 4 and 5 also... oh and Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 too) that doesn't work in Dreamweaver CC.
Please, consider that an answer like "it's the new way that it should run now" will not be accepted (and will NOT solve the problem).
Case : page based on a template. Somewhen I want to edit a css-selector: I highlight it and press the button "modify CSS rule" in the properties panel.
All I obtain is a dialog box "this is part of the code which is protected because it's based on a template". Then nada. Of course, the css-selector I want
to edit is located in a external file. And of course the part of the code that <link> to the files is protected as part of the template.
So I'm pretty ok with the message warning me. I had the same with DW CS6. BUT after warning me, DW CS6 (and previous) provides the panel. Which makes sense,
because the file itself is in no way protected as a part ot the template. And it seems pretty dumb not to be able to edit a css because you use a template-based page.
I just want DW CC to do the same as previous versions. Period.
Hope this will be patched soon. Cause it's a bug.

The thing which is going on is a bug.
So far, that's where we disagree. I don't see any evidence it's a bug since the behavior you are describing is not consistent with my experience. For example -

In the child page, I click in the ID foo and I see it appear in the Targeted Rule field of the Property inspector. I click the button for Edit Rule, and change the font size to 18px. There is no prompt at all, even though the link to the external stylesheet is in a non-editable region of the template, and the stylesheet is changed according to my edit. So what am I doing wrong?

Changes on room template in Coll - Content inconsistent !

Hi Collaboration experts,
I have a question on Collaboration Rooms again.
I have created a Java WebDynpro Wizard to create a new room, which works perfectly fine. I offer the possibilty to choose one of several room templates I have created for certain purposes ( BI context ). Then I use the ITemplate to get the related parameters I have defined when creating the template ( Portal -> Content-Admin -> Collaboration-Content ). The user can now enter values for those parameters. I have, for example, an iView in my template that displays an url and it works perfectly well that the user can choose any url to be displayed during my room creation wizard.
But when I change anything on the parameters, e.g. the description, in the template designer in Portal -> Content-Admin -> Collaboration-Content, the chnages are not consistent. When I run my wizard and get the parameters of the related template via ITemplate, I still get the former description, although it has been changed in the portal.
Can anyone tell if this is an error? Or am I missing something?

Hi Thierry,
for each room you create also a group is created. The group name contains cryptical characters but also ROOM. Search in "User Administration" for room and you will find the group.
Check if the user is in this group.
The user normally will be added to this group if you add a room member in the room administration part.
The user needs also rights for the KM Content parts of the room. I don't know now where exactly but this is pretty fine described in the How to's.

Unexpected margin on content div

I've created a new document 'twoColElstLtHdr.html', from the
options given in DW CS4 I have given container and content
background colours, done nothing else, and viewed the page in
browsers IE7 and Firefox. In design view and in Firefox there is a
margin above and below the content div, but not in IE7. How can I
stop this happening? I've heard of 'margin collapse, but don't
understand it.
