Template vs include
what is easier, or maybe I should say, what would make it easier for me while designing a site? Build my pages from a template, or building a bunch of pages that I can include into i.e. include_once header, Navigation, footer, aside.....
I started with a template but many said it is better to include instead. The problem for me is that I am fairly new at using Dreamweaver 2014.1 and still learning. what would anyone suggest I start with and can modify later on for something more efficient once I have grasped the fundamentals of Dreamweaver?
I recommend experimenting with both approaches. I myself find Dreamweaver's template system to be robust and very reliable. I use it all the time on small sites. Working with includes is preferred for large sites. For this you'll want to setup your development environment: Setting up a PHP development environment for Dreamweaver | Adobe Developer Connection

Modify existing Template to include SQL Query
How do you modify the existing 1099 Template to include sql query that will pull latest address information rather than primary address?
Hi,
If I were doing a custom field in the material master I would load thru the
idoc MATMAS and extend it to include my custom field, populate that field
thru a user exit in the IDoc processing function then set up my material
master data load in the LSMW to use the IDoc instead of the custom program.
For me this would be the easiest way and you don't have to fiddle with the
standard Direct Input program.
Reward if found helpfull,
Cheers,
Chaitanya. -
The code below works assuming you have a list template setup called "GenTasksTemplate".
The problem is that even though the check box to include content was checked during the creation of the template, the task items in the new list do not get populated. What am I missing?
using System;
using System.Linq;
using Microsoft.SharePoint.Client;
protected void createSPlist(object sender, EventArgs e)
ClientContext context = new ClientContext("https://sharepointServer/sites/devcollection/");
var web = context.Web;
ListTemplateCollection ltc = context.Site.GetCustomListTemplates(context.Web);
ListCollection siteListsColection = web.Lists;
context.Load(ltc);
context.ExecuteQuery();
ListCreationInformation listCreationInfo = new ListCreationInformation
Title = "New Task from Template",
Description = "Tasks created from custom template"
Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.ListTemplate listTemplate = ltc.First(listTemp => listTemp.Name == "GenTasksTemplate");
listCreationInfo.TemplateFeatureId = listTemplate.FeatureId;
listCreationInfo.TemplateType = listTemplate.ListTemplateTypeKind;
listCreationInfo.DocumentTemplateType = listTemplate.ListTemplateTypeKind;
//listCreationInfo.CustomSchemaXml =
siteListsColection.Add(listCreationInfo);
context.Load(siteListsColection);
context.ExecuteQuery();
http://www.net4geeks.com Who said I was a geek?Yes. I can create a list with the template using the UI. I can also create list programmatically using the Microsoft.SharePoint library within a Windows Forms Application. If I do create a provider-hosted app referencing Microsoft.SharePoint,
it results in a 64bit / 32bit mismatch error. I am running SharePoint 2013 on a 64 bit Windows 2012 Server.
The problem is that with a provider-hosted SharePoint App, I am limited to only using the Microsoft.SharePoint.Client library which is very limited.

How can I customize a Pages template to include a photo frame and text area?
I am putting together a reference notebook for volunteers at our local zoo.
I am attempting to format every info sheet the same. Each page will include a photo of the featured creature along with text including description, feeding habits, range etc.
The only program I have to publish with is Pages. I've tried to put in a "photo box" so that each photo is the same size and in the same location on the page etc. I just can't seem to find all the tools I need to do this.
I'd appreciate some guidance. Thanks so much.You need to create your own default template. Open the blank template & insert a photo, any photo. Now select the photo & resize it using the metrics inspector. Now, with photo selected, go to Format > Advanced & select Define as Media Placeholder. Then again go to Format > Advanced & select define as default image style. While you're at it set the amount of extra space in the wrap inspector, etc. You can do similar settings with text boxes, tables, shapes, etc.
I suggest downloading the Pages User Guide from the Help menu & reading more about placeholders & about capturing pages (sorry, it's not something I can remember doing). -
Dreamweaver Templates and Include files
Hi,
I am using dreamweaver templates so that my users can create
new pages on our Intranet using Contribute.
When I create a template and try and use an inculde file for
the menu systems I get an error. I am trying to use the following
code to inculde the asp file:
<!--#include file="/includes/menu.asp" -->
And I get the following error when saving the template:
Unbalanced body tag
I have checked and I definetly have opening and closing body
tags in the HTML. So I am wondering whether the error is caused by
the fact that the file is a dwt and not as asp.
So, is there anyway of using include files in a dreamweaver
template?
Thanks in advance for any help.That's the wrong syntax for a file include. It should be
either of these -
<!--#include virtual="/includes/menu.asp" -->
or
<!--#include file="includes/menu.asp" -->

WSP Template not included the rights
Hi;
I have a subsite which contain several librairies with custom rights (each lib it its proper autorizations and users groups) and when I generate a WSP template in using the function "save site as template" (I have selected the option : included
the content) and I create a new subsite from this template all the autorizations librairies not are inclucded. into the new subset ?
Can be I must to use the CMP format to create all my subsites with the rights included ?
Regards;List templates do not include:
Security settings, such as a list of users or groups with permissions to the list from which the template was created.
Lookup field links. Although lists can contain lookup fields that reference data in another list, the other list (and its data) is not included when you save a list template.

Can a template NOT include the body?
This may be as much a coding question as a DW one. I'm an
novice with html and css etc. but can plow my way through usually.
I also have studied quite a number of web sites to learn
techniques. One that I like is to put an ID with a <body>
statement so I can address that page separately in CSS if there's
something unique about the page.
I also use templates almost entirely for common navigation
code (e.g. top menu, footer, etc.) along with most of the common
<head> records.
I decided to see if I could use both the <body id="x">
technique and the template but DW didn't seem to want to make a
template without the <body> statement which defeats the
purpuse of the body ID.
Is there an approach in DW (or just general site and page
design) which allows for the use of the body ID technique for
individual page formatting AND the ability to create "standard"
parts of a page (i.e. template)?
Thanks

No. Your external stylesheets will be cached in either case.
The main
difference is that by using the @import function, you can
link to a single
stylesheet that @imports multiple other stylesheets. This
would be for
convenience and clarity - you avoid encumbering your page
with (potentially)
oodles of links to other stylesheets.

I don't understand your thinking here. A linked stylesheet
must always be
on the server, whether it is a standard link or an @import
link.

Is it me or does the iWorks templates shown at the Apple site are not included?
I can't seem to find any of them.
Pages is shown with one titled "kite lines" - flight of fancy
also with the rest of the apps...
strange.I agree, Alex.
Could anyone please help answer if templates were removed and are not included in the most recent versions of Pages 5.1 and Keynote 6.1?
Specifically:
1) Did Pages 5.0 have a template for "Grove Surfboards?"
2) Did Keynote 6.0 have a template for a presentation titled, "The History of Pigments?"
I recently upgraded from Pages 4.3 to 5.1 and Keynote 5.3 to 6.1, and unfortunately, I am worried that I missed out on the above creative templates.
Any help clarifying would be much appreciated!
Thank you,

Trouble with templates that include JavaScript and jquery information.
I built a page that includes a JavaScript gallery and tried to save that as my main template since the majority of my pages will have variations of that gallery. Everything seems fine until I try to add an editable region. Regardless of where I add one (like for my content div tag - so I can edit everything in my content region), I lose my gallery. I was able to keep it working on one try but I couldn't edit the javascript in subsequent pages. For example, one of my pages that didn't have the gallery still had the scripts for it in the uneditable template code, so a blaring "fatal error" comes up whenever I try to view that page in a browser. Once I tried to deal with that by making the header editable (so I could add or delete scripts) I once again lost my gallery.
So my question is, how do I make those areas of my template code editable without losing my gallery? Sorry if I'm not explaining this well, or using incorrect terms. All I know about CSS I've learned in the last two weeks through Lynda.com tutorials and scouring the web for other help. My brain's pretty fried from all this and at this point I'd love some assistance. Thanks in advance for any help.
Oh, I'm on a Mac Pro using Dreamweaver CS5. Files are HTML5 and CSS3.
Here's the code for the page minus any editable regions (this is from the page I made to use as my template). This works perfectly for me in all the browsers I've tried. Until I try to make it a template with editable regions. I've shortened it where I can:

if (a[i].indexOf("#")!=0){ d.MM_p[j]=new Image; d.MM_p[j++].src=a[i];}}

After composing a first draft of a reply I went into my pages to make a couple of tweaks and throw them up so you can see them live. While I was doing that I noticed that there was no link referencing the galleria.twelve.css file, so I added that line:
<link href="galleria/themes/twelve/galleria.twelve.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen, projection">
and WHAMO, it suddenly started showing up when using the template. The scripts are/were loading after the css, so that wasn't it, but it's your response and my having another look at the css and javascript code in the header that helped me find the problem.
I guess sometimes you just need to step away for awhile and clear your head. So now everything is showing up properly and all the areas I wanted to be editable are editable. I will sleep very well tonight, hahaha.
Here's the page anyways. Kindly ignore the pages that it links to - most of them are ancient as is the work on them. Thanks so much for your help!

Why woudl you use a dreamweaver template versus an include
for say the top nav and side nav? I feel like templates are more of
a hassle because you ahve to update all the pages then reupload all
the affected pages rather then just updating the include and
uploading that. Please help me out here.Templates do make your life much easier. I use the following
scheme....
First, I mentally separate the page layout into three
sections:
1. Stuff that will not change for the life of the site (i.e.,
the basic
structural elements)
2. Stuff that *could* change from time to time (e.g.,
navigation elements,
burst advertisements, section-specific navigation, etc.)
3. Stuff that *will* change from one page to the next
Then I create a template containing all class1 elements. Next
I create
server-side include files containing all class 2 elements and
place them on
the template as needed. Note - some of the class 2 elements
may be
"section-specific elements", and their placement on the
template will be
subject to the next item. Finally, I insert editable regions
to cover the
class 3 items, INCLUDING the section-specific navigation.
This allows me to just cookie-cut the rest of the site. I
estimate that
even for fairly large sites, about 80% of my work goes into
planning and
creating this template file.
Templates save me from the situation where I am adding
content to a
previously built page - to build out a new page, and
inadvertantly save the
page with the new content using the old file name.... For
even something as
trivial as that, it's worth it....

CSWP Display Template Item - Include Like / Rating SharePoint control
I'm working with the Content Search Web Part to bring details from Announcements lists up to the home page. Each of these lists has the Like / Rating Social elements enabled and I would like to surface this on the Item Display Template but can't find
out how.
Is there a SharePoint control or JavaScript that I can use to surface this content?
ThanksOk, after searching I've found a solution for this. It will be a 2 stage solution, the first simply displaying the rating or number of likes, the second actually updating them.
So, stage 1:
1. You need to login to your Central Administration site and go to your Search Service Application. Once there, under "Queries and Results", click "Search Schema". You can apply a filter to help find the relevant managed property, so filter
on "Like" or "Rating". In this example I wanted to use the number of likes, so after filtering on "Like" I clicked to edit the "LikesCount" managed property. From the edit page, located the "Main characteristics" heading and ensure that the "Searchable"
checkbox is ticked. Click "Ok" and run a "Full Crawl" on your content source.
2. Once this has been done, locate the Display Item Content Template that will be used for the Content Search Web Part. At the top of this file you will find an <mso:ManagedPropertyMapping /> tag. In this you want to register the
LikesCount managed property from earlier. This can be done by copying something similar to below:
'Likes Count'{Likes Count}:'LikesCount'
Further down the template, within the <div> where you can define content you need to setup a variable that reads the LikesCount value. I also had some trouble reading this value when there were no Likes on an item, == null and isNaN() didn't
seem to work so I added an if statement to check for 0 items.
var likesCount = $getItemValue(ctx, "Likes Count");
if (!(likesCount > 0)) {
likesCount = 0;
Finally, you can surface this variable into your content by simply using the normal notation. i.e.
_#= likesCount =#_
I hope this has been of use to some people. I will be posting an update once I've figured out if it's possible to like the source list item from the CSWP. -
Here is the scenario. (SharePoint 2013)
In Dev/Test/Prod any Site that we Save as Template and include content and then, Download and try to use in a new Site Collection errors out upon use "List does not exist" error.
This occurs with ANY Site, even OOB Team Site template that is immediately "Saved as Template".
We can do this in any other environment (we have several test labs 1 in O365 and 1 in VM that is very OOB)
We can take the site solution from the environments we're having the issue in and use them successfully in our Lab environments (on prem or in the cloud).
We have also tried taking Site solution from lab environment (where we know it works fine) and tried to use these in Dev/Test/Prod and they also error on us.
In the Dev/Test/Prod environments that have the issue if we DO NOT include content, the template works just fine to create a new site collection with the template.
Keep in mind we're talking about environment with no 3rd party apps, no custom code, just 2013 SharePoint with all patches and CU up to June 2013, AND this is ANY template even a vanilla OOB template without anything in it.
You can always save site as template including content, download/upload it to new site collection solutions gallery and activate it without any issue... it's only if you try to use these templates to create a site that the error occurs.
Any thoughts on this?
JI also experiencing the same issue. I also tried to create a new site-collection using publishing site template, resulting in "list not found" error.
Later I tried just a team-site (with content) -> the same error.
The error appears on two different (post SP1) farms. That's why I tested the site-collection creation on an old (pre SP1) farm: the error doesn't exist. Site-Collections are created properly.
My conclusion is: either SharePoint SP1 or a later CU causing the error.

Email created from template doesn't include changes
I originally asked this question here:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2013_release-outlook/email-created-from-template-doesnt-include-changes/a0300d60-6649-479b-bb2d-8ed61d54e908
And was told to post here since I'm working on an Exchange Server configuration.
So the issue is essentially this: I create an email template and then create a new email with that template. When I send the email, it sends only the template and none of the changes or additions made to the email. This is also the case if I save the email
as a draft rather than send it.
Thanks,
BrianHi,
Please switch to Exchange Online Mode, can you send/save the changes to the template?
Since you mentioned in the previous thread, you created a new profile and this issue's gone then, I suggest you repair the data file(.ost) to check the result:

I hope this can be helpful.

<20INCLUDE...> includes are used in the report template.
I applied solution in note: 1496130, (i.e.: putting a non hidden paragraph mark after include symbol) but problem persists.Hello Martinez,
I hope you would have gone through all the topics related to Include of MSDS. But still listing out some of the check points for your reference if you have missed out anything:
- Do notuse included templates within repeating groups because this has a negative impact on performance.
-If you change a template or cancel the release, this can also affect the templates in which the template has been included. To inform you that the affected templates need to be checked again, the system makes the following status changes:
If you edit a template, all templates with the status In Workin which the edited template is included directly or indirectly are given the status For Checking.
If you cancel the release of a template, all templates with the status In Workor Releasedin which the no longer released template is included directly or indirectly are given the status For Checking.
-When the system expands an included template during report generation, it uses the Microsoft Word function for inserting files. The possibilities and constraints for this function therefore also apply to the inclusion of document templates. This means:
If the template into which the template is included has a header and footer, the system does not transfer the header and footer from the included template. If the template into which the template is included does not have a header and footer, the system transfers the header and footer from the included template.
-In Microsoft Word, documents cannot be inserted in other documents in certain cases. For example, a document that contains a text box or other drawing objects cannot be inserted in text boxes, legends, comments, footnotes, and endnotes. In these cases, including document templates is also not possible and errors occur during report generation.

Hi,
Thanks to help received here I am now using includes and a
new PMM navigation...both are working very well.
Now I am deciding whether to shift another page style
strategy from a template to includes. The page will not have major
navigation...just "home" and back to page of origin. It will have
several (5) headings and paragraphs with info below each. Is it
better to create an include for each heading (mostly for future
changes more than saving code) or use a template? The paragraph
content is what will vary from the outset and the format will need
to be the same for any future changes...adds etc.
Thanks, pbsueI think this is doomed. Honestly, I have never seen SSI used
in that
fashion (INSIDE a tag). That doesn't mean anything, really,
but it's my
experience....
Why not do this with javascript, or with some server
scripting?
