Temporarily embed linked photos in catalog (collection)

I use LR3 on two machines, my mac pro desktop and macbook pro laptop. I primarily use the laptop on shoots, to capture, annotate, etc., while the desktop in the studio is for serious editing because not only is it much faster, but it has lots of attached SATA drives. I have a master catalog which I sync between the machines via chronosync which works great. I can see all the photo previews on my laptop which is convenient and when I use the catalog on my desktop, I can do all that plus edit them. Anyway, what I'd love to be able to do is temporarily embed the master files in my catalog. Copy the catalog and previews to my laptop and continue editing them at home. Then when I copy the catalog back to my desktop, I'd like to move the embedded files back to their original locations, which are often scattered across different drives and folders. I know I LR3 let's me export a collection or catalog and all its associated files to a location of my choosing. But there is no way to put the files back where I'd ultimately like them to be stored without manually keeping track of the original file locations.

OK, good point. And anchored images can't be on a different layer, so the problem becomes a lot more complex -- right up your alley.
Y-e-e-e-e-h well, maybe "no". You cannot move an inline image to another layer, so what one could do is to copy the image to the image layer instead and delete the image--but not its frame!--from the original position. There is a *huge* drawback, though, to this method: if the text reflows, the now-empty 'placeholder' frame will move along with the text but the copy containing the actual image will stay on its place. It kind of defeats the idea of having a single editable document for both purposes.
I suggest opening a copy of the document, then running this little Javascript:
var images = app.activeDocument.allGraphics;
for(var i=0;i<images.length;i++)
    images[i].remove();
which will remove all images without touching their frames. Export the document to PDF and then throw it away -- there is no good reason to save this copy somewhere, as you should always be working with the original file. Saving the emptied-out file somewhere will inevitably lead to confusion and errors.

  • Can I build a plugin that allows my clients to export a photos or a collection as a catalog?

All I want to know is if I can invoke the export as catalog feature (file>export as catalog) from a plugin. For a example, I want my users to put their photo on any collection created under my plugin and allow them to export their selection as a catalog. So I can receive their catalog on the destination site, I dont want to receive individual photos, I want to be able to receive the catalog.
    Is that possible?

    Hi,
John R. Ellis  what I need to know is if the exporting services provided by SDK  and the API somehow would allow me to export a collection or a group of collections as a catalog, so I can take advantage from the smart previews. I would like to perform this action as a comand, i.e. Right click send to melvin.
I know that the API provides a function to build smart previews, but am I able to export those smart previews without the catalog? If so, would I be able to edit those files on other computer and then import them back ?
Rob Cole when you say Keyboard stuffing, those that means that I can program and execute those shorcuts ? or teach the user the shortcuts so the can execute them from their keyboard?

  • Lost link to Lightroom Catalog

My kids were playing with my PC and accidently renamed my main storage drive. I renamed the drive and didnt think much of it until I opened Lightroom.
It has obviously lost the link with my catalog and is now asking to upgrade to catalog to work with LR4. I am concerned that if I go with this option I will lose all the the changes I have made to my images.
I have 55000 photos in the catalog so this would be pretty bad. I have been importing all of my files as DNG for quite a few years now and I am sure I had it set in preferences to embed changes into the DNG Files.
Can anyone advise on the best course of action from here.

Nothing in the upgrade process will cause you to lose your changes.
However, something else is wrong here. You shouldn't have to upgrade a catalog, so apparently you haven't renamed the disk properly, otherwise LR would know your catalog location.
Can't you find the catalog file on your hard disk? Use your operating system to search for files that end with LRCAT, and double click on it when you find it.

  • How best to use catalogs, collections etc

I wonder if anyone can help out on a newbie question about how best to use catalogs, collections, etc
Let's say I shoot an event A.  I take loads of photographs, which I import into Lightroom.  I choose some that I like and I flag them.  So far so good.
Then I do the same for events B to Z.
Now time passes and I would like to go back to all of the photographs from event C, and just select them for further processing.
Is this what collections are for?  Should I be making "All Of Event C" into a collection, then in the future I can come back and just ask to show the photographs from a given collection?
    Many thanks,
    regards,
    /alan

You can do it that way.
    >Should I be making "All Of Event C" into a collection, then in the future I can come back and just ask to show the photographs from a given collection?
That would work. Or you could include a specific job identifier into the
metadata (I believe there's an IPTC field specifically for that), and
then make a smart collection that isolates just that value of "Event C".
If you use the same star ratings for all jobs - 1 is finished, 2 is
further work needed, 3 is review, etc - you could further winnow it
down. And that way, you don't have to worry about removing photos from
one collection or another; the smart collection will automatically add
or remove them from view, based on the criteria and the current values
    of the photos.
With collection sets, you could have a set called "Event 1". And within
this set could be the various collection criteria mentioned above.

  • Difficulty Linking Photos moved to new EHD to LR

I am having difficulty locating files in Lightroom 3.2.  I just moved my files to a larger new EHD, so LR3 no longer  finds them in the usual place on my old EHD, and I get the usual question mark on my images asking me to locate them.
The problem I am having is the files on the EHD are in multiple folders and sub folders.  All my photos are in collections in LR and these photos are located in different folders/subfolders. When I go to a photo in a collection in LR, click on the question mark and locate the appropriate folder/subfolder on my new EHD, and I do have find nearby missing photos checked,  it only locates that one photo or the couple of nearby photos in that folder/subfolder.  Going through all the collections and photos and selecting the correct folders/subfolders is a tedious task at best.
Is there any way to locate all of them more easily?  I tried checking “all photographs” under Catalog, but that didn’t work either.  Any suggestion?
    Thanks,
    Matthew Kraus

As far as I can tell in Lightroom you can only move 1 folder at a
time so with hundreds of folders......well.
Or can anyone give a solution?
Point to the top level folder and move that ... all subfolders will move with it.
If the top level folder doesn't appear in your Lightroom Folder Panel, right-click on any folder and select "Show Parent Folder".

  • Temporarily unable to repair corrupt catalog

i'm running the current version of lightroom. it is giving me a dialog box that says:
temporarily unable to repair corrupt catalog
lightroom encountered problems reading or writing from disk when attempting to repair catalog
the operation may succeed in future attemps
if you wish to try again, please first check available disk space and close all other applications
each time i try, the same dialog box appears.
the corrupt catalog is located on a 1tb drive, 554gb used / 357gb free
what can i do to fix this?

    I presume you don't have a recent-enough catalog backup (?)
I bet you won't let that happen again..
Anyway, depending on what's wrong with the catalog, you may be able to recover develop settings (only) via a plugin called WreckHover (free, by me).
In addition to catalog, settings may be stored in:
    * xmp if you've saved metadata (if not, I bet you won't let that happen again either) - recovered when importing new photos, or reading metadata (Library menu) of already-imported photos.
    * exported versions (if exported with all metadata) - you can recover settings from those via the same plugin: WreckHover.
Note: you'll need to restore a backup catalog first, or start a new one if no backups (really?).
    Good luck,
    Rob

  • How do I add photos from another collection to my saved Book?

    Hi,
In my lightroom library I have created a collection set called "Wedding". As I have 1000 photos from my wedding, within this Collection Set I have created 10 or more Collections to organise these photos (Ceremony, Reception, First Dance, etc.).
I have created a new 'Book' which as expected, has created a new Collection within my 'Wedding' collection set.
When I first create the book (before saving it) it seems like I can click on a page, then browse my Collections and add the photo that I desire to the page.
After I have saved the book, I can't so this. I want to work on my book later, and use my existing organisation of photos, and add photos to my books from these collections.
I know I am missing something basic (I am new to lightroom). I don't understand why I can't add a photo to my book after I have saved it.
Each time I click on one of my other collections, a new unsaved book appears in the main project window.
I have worked out that if I copy all my wedding photos into the new "Book" collection, then my photos are available for use - but this defeats the purpose of organising my photos into separate collections, and it doesn't seem like you can create a sub-collection within the Book project.
I also can't seem to find any documentation to explain this properly.
Any help would be apreciated - or if I coud be pointed to a good resource.
    Cheers,
    Mandy.

    Thanks for the response.
I saw these discussions previously, but not of them seem to answer my question (nor confirm that what I am trying to do cannot be done).
If I want to create a "Wedding Album" book, do I have to firstly use the Library module to drag ALL the photos I may want to use into my "Wedding Album" collection (saved book) ?
This seems annoying as I have already categorisied my 1000+ wedding photos into separate Collections using the Library (so that I can find the one I want easier).
It seems as though the Book module would function much better if you could create a book, choose a page that you want to add a photo to, then browse through your pre-configured collection sets & collections, and add photos to the book from the navigation panel on the left when you have the "Book" module open. (Rather than having to copy the photo first into the "Book" 's Collection, then adding it to the page that you want)

In Lightroom mobile how can move photos within the collection????

What you can do is to move (or copy) a photo form one collection to another. This can be triggered via the top right app menu item from grid view. Same menu is available when you open up an image for editing. Hope that helps. -Guido

  • How do I move all photos and catalog (PE 6)  from local computer drive to network server drive?

I'm using PE 6. I have about 40 GB of photos all organized and cataloged on my local PC's hard drive. I have just installed a home server that is networked and want to move/migrate all the photos and catalog information/organization from my local PC drive to the home server's hard drive. Basically, just moving everything to a new drive. I then need to point PE 6 to this new location for the photos and catalog information. All advice on how to do this would be appreciated?

I just got done doing this and I'm not so sure I'd recommend it.
#1 reason: The #$%%#$ Organizer has REAL PROBLEMS figuring out network path names. It has this really nasty habit of thinking, say, \\homeserv\photos, \\Homeserv\Photos, and \\HOMESERV\PHOTOS are DIFFERENT paths. And depending on how you use it to navigate, or drag and drop files onto it, or teach it to watch a folder on a network drive or whatever, it uses variants on these kinds of path names. This leads to problems like duplicate imports that are really the same file.
    What a ***.
You MIGHT have better luck if you use a mapped drive letter to make this work. Sad. The rules for writing WinApps to NOT NEED mapped drive letters have been common knowledge to developers for a decade. Just not Adobe developers, apparently. Beyond sad. Pathetic.

When I am trying to package my artwork in Adobe Illustrator CC, it is not capturing my images and fonts. How do I make sure my linked photos and fonts are captured?

Not all fonts can be packaged depending on their licensing. Some fonts are set to not allow packaging. For those you would have to manually locate them on your computer and add them to the folder where the packaging occurred.
For the images have you checked the "copy links" option?

  • How do I see which albums a specific photo in Moments/Collections have been added to?

How do I see which albums a specific photo in Moments/Collections have been added to?

In addition, it seems like Photos distinguish between the way pictures is managed in 'Albums' vs. 'Shared albums'. It seems like, removing a picture in Moments/Collections will remove the picture in the corresponding Albums (which I think is great) but not removing the picture in 'Shared albums'. In other words, a duplicate picture seems to be created when adding a picture to a shared album (instead of a reference picture like for 'Albums'). Am I correct? This is very confusing.
In that case, I assume I need to remove my original picture each time I add a picture to a 'Shared album' in order to avoid duplicates and reach some kind of "master" management of my pictures?
