Temporary Tablespace Issues

Hi,
Temporary tablespace is getting full used.
Temp Tablespace details:
Size=110GB
I need to find out that how we can estimate actual size of Temporary tablespace.
Could you please guide me for the same.
Also PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET is defined as size of 7GB.

If you facing the size issue then create another temporary tablespace (lets call it TEMP2).
The next step would be to remove the temporary tablespace you want to resize from being the default temporary tablespace by making TEMP2 the default. perform these activities in off time .

Help!!! Temporary tablespace issue

10g
I had 2 tablespaces temp1 and temp2
temp1 was created as a normal tablespace as temporary.
temp2 was created as a temporary tablespace.
I queried and found out that the temporary tablespace for all the users are temp1(including system)
and hence I saw the error ORA-25153: Temporary Tablespace is Empty
So what I did is I drop the tablespace temp1 and tried assigning the users to temp2.
I am getting error
Now I am not able to create anything the database.
Please see below example
SQL> drop user test;

SQL> create user test identified by test;

Resizing temporary tablespace in oracle 8i

Please,
I some questions on oracle 8i.
1. how do I know on oracle 8i if the tablespace X is the temporary tablespace?
2. I have someone that increase the size of the temporary tablespace, so I have to decrease it to its normal size, my question is when I do the following command.
alter database tempfile '/u02/oradata/TESTDB/temp01.dbf' resize 250M;
alter database tempfile '/u02/oradata/TESTDB/temp01.dbf' resize 250M
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-03297: file contains used data beyond requested RESIZE value
Does someone show me how to solve this issue?

Problem with Temporary Tablespace in 8i

Hello friends,
I have the 8.1.7.4 version, with a 18GB Temporary Tablespace.
An external process (from Datawarehouse tool) is making a query over a 10.000.000 records.
It appeared the error:
SQL error 1652 occurred when accessing table XXX
It's supposed it occurs due to temporary tablespace is full
DWH tool makes different "big" queries.. but.. are the enough to grow up to 18GB???
Any idea?
[It's not possible to change sort_area_size or any other parameter in init.ora]
Apart form this: Which would be the best way to clean this temporary tablespace?

Jose, I think you are right and the problem is that Oracle was unable to obtain additional temp tablespace extents for the query since you mention the problem occurred on a query.
The question is was the lack of free temp due to the combination of tasks running at the time or is the plan for the query in question the issue?
If you resubmit the query does the 01652 error re-occur. If it does then I suggest grabbing a copy of the contents of v$sort_usage and resubmitting the query. Monitor the sort usage every 30 seconds, minute, or several minutes depending on how long the query runs before returning the error. This will give you an idea of how much temp space the query wants and maybe why (see following).
Also get the explain plan and see where temp is being used. One query may use multiple allocations of temp space at a time such as one chunk to support hash joins, one to support aggregation, and one to support order by so the total sort space necessary may be a lot more than you would think just based on the result set size.
In the case where the query in question is using too much temp you have to ask if the plan is the issue or if you really need more temp. When the plan is not efficient then converting to using nested loops over hash joins might be one way to eliminate excess temp space usage.

SYSTEM Tablespace issue (10.2.0.1 database)

Oracle database 10.2.0.1 (upgraded from 8.1.7.0 via 8.1.7.4)...successfully upgraded
Now when we open dbcontrol, we are getting alerts regarding the Tablespace.
It shows two critical alert messages as below :-
1) Tablesapace SYSTEM (dictionary managed) is 95.16 % full
2) 1 segment in SYSTEM tablespace is unable to extend.
Now how to deal with this type of issues ?
Can we extend the size of datafile of SYSTEM Tablespace which is dictionary managed ? or can we add another new datafile to system tablespace ? what is appropriate solution ?SYSTEM Tablespace
How to solve the point no. (2) as the TS is dictionary managed ?

Plz add the datafile to the system tablespace tp increase its size , and the conver the system tablespace from dictionary managed to local.
To Change SYSTEM tablespaces to locally managed follow the below procedures:
Before the SYSTEM tablespace can be migrated to locally managed format, you should ensure the following:
The database has a default temporary tablespace which is not SYSTEM
There are not any rollback segments in dictionary managed tablespaces
There is at least one online rollback segment in a locally managed tablespace, or an undo tablespace (if using automatic undo management mode) should be online.
All tablespaces other than the tablespace containing the undo space (undo tablespace or the tablespace containing the rollback segment) and the default temporary tablespace are in read-only mode.
There is a complete backup of the system.
The system is in restricted mode.
Notr, that we already have an UNDO Tablespace. The following query determines whether the SYSTEM tablespace is locally managed:
SQL> SELECT ts# FROM ts$ WHERE ts# = 0 AND bitmapped <> 0;
If 0 rows are returned, then the SYSTEM tablespace is dictionary managed. Otherwise, the SYSTEM tablespace is locally managed.
Steps to change SYSTEM tablespaces to locally managed

Temporary tablespace groups - all available temp files not used

We have a temporary tablespace group TEMP_GROUP made of the following pre-existing temp files. I have placed the size in MB in brackets. Names have been changed to protect our privacy. NLS is spanish
SQL> select * from dba_tablespace_groups;

TEMP_GROUP TEMP2 --(2000)
TEMP_GROUP TEMP3 --(8048)
This tablespace group is the default temp tablespace of this database, and is the default temp tablespace of sys in the example that follows

alter INDEX schema1.idx1 rebuild

NOTE that the message refers to the tempfile TEMP1 and not the TEMP_GROUP, which has 11GB of space available
The size of the index is small enough to be handled by this TEMP_GROUP, although quite large to be handled by TEMP1 on its own.

What appears to be happening is that when the rebuild index has used all the space available in TEMP1 tempfile, it does not go on to use the space available in the other two tempfiles that make up the TEMP_GROUP. This seems to be contrary to the very idea of having set up a TEMP_GROUP.
This suposition is born out by the repitition of the operation using the owner of the index, whose default temp file is not TEMP_GROUP as a whole, but the component tempfile TEMP_3 which has 8048MB available

My questions are
1. ¿Why does the original operation fail out when it has reached the limit of tempfile TEMP1 instead of using the further space availbel within TEMP_GROUP? ¿Isn´t the point of temporary tablespace groups the explicit avoidance of this type of issue?
2. Depending on the answer to #1, and asuming that the behaviour is normal (ie, that a rebuild index should not be expected to take place using more than one temp file), does anyone have any idea ¿what dicatates the order of usage of the component temp files in a group?. ¿Is it alphabetical order of tempfile name?, ¿file create time? or ¿something else?
3. As I mentioned the group was created out of existing tempfiles, rather than creating some temp file specifically to form the group. ¿Could this fact explain the inability of the operation to move onto the next temp file, once the first is exhausted. There is nothing in the documentation to suggest that there should be any difference in behaviour between a temp group created with new temp files, or the inclusion of existing temp files when creating a temp group.
As you can see, we have worked round this problem, but it is an issue of importance given that it may affect other operations that leverage this temp file group. Any information or pointers to documented instances of similar occurances would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Half solved. This thread seems to suggest that there should be n expectation that a sort operation will begin to use the n+1 member of a temp tablespace group once it has exhausted member n.

But this does not answer my secondary question as to how to determine which temp tablespace member is used first. I guess the solution would be to drop the the group and recreate it with three adequatly sized temp tablespaces.

I've tried to find out but not successful. Can I create BIGFILE TEMPORARY TABLESPACE like I've created normal BIGFILE TABLESPACE.
Secondly, If it is not possible then will creating multiple temporary files will effect performance will doing the sorting?

RegardsBigfile tablespaces are supported only for locally managed tablespaces with automatic segment space management, with three exceptions: locally managed undo tablespaces, temporary tablespaces, and the SYSTEM tablespace.
There is no performance overhead if you have multiple datafiles in a tablespace. That is structure of Oracle: Tablespace may consist of multiple datafiles.

How big for the temporary tablespace is proper?

I get the error several times per month:
ORA-1652: unable to extend temp segment by 256 in tablespace temp
The size of this temporary tablespace is 1G. Of couse I can inrease to 2G or 10G.
questions:
How to determine the new size for this tablespace properly?
what factors will be considered for it?

I think more than one 1GB for a 6GB is acceptable. I agree the temp size is not determied by database size, but satistically it should be in a range compared with database size, right?
Well, what I did in this situation is to create a scheduled job, get information from v$sort_usage and kepp it in a table. This job run in every 5 mins. I let it run a couple of days, then I can know which SQL consumes too much temp space. After that, I tune this SQL to resolve the issue. Hopefully it would be help to you.

Temporary tablespace usage is always 0%

I have this strange issue. My Oracle 9iR2 database always show temp tablespace usage as 0% no matter how much sorting is going on, it is never used.

Problem shrinking a temporary tablespace

I have a temporary tablespace in 10.1.0.3 I need to shrink. I need to shrink the database.
1. I change all users that user that temporary tablespace to a new temporary tablespace
2. Tried to shrink it but got
ERROR at line 1:

I take this to mean there are open transactions using this temporary tablespace? How do I find who currently is using this temporary tablespace? do i need to kill those sessions?

Hi,
There may be one issue, if there are transactions open and the old temp tbsp is currently used (for sorting, etc), you will not be able to drop it without crashing the sessions. It will be nice if you check which user sessions are using the old temp and either gracefully abort the session (by asking them) or wait until they are done. Otherwise you may create the new temp and make it default (tablespace as well as user's temp tablespace name) so that no new user session will connect to the old temp and you can monitor it to stop its usage.

You will only need to worry if you start to see errors in the alert log file. If you don't then temp being full is not an issue.

Drop Temporary Tablespace!

Hi All,
I have tried dropping my old temporary tablespace TEMP after making new TEMP2 as default.
All the users (checked in dba_users) are using TEMP2 as default temporary tablespace.
Now, issue is when I am trying to take TEMP offline and dropping it some of the users are not able to open the forms.
Please suggest, is it necessary that I must do this activity after taking a proper downtime or I can do it in business hours.

Actually issue was
You cannot drop a tablespace if it contains any rollback segments holding active transactions.*
Try to check whether any one using the temp segments or not on query "v$sort_usage"*
If it returns the rows, the sessions are using the temp tablespace. Once the Sessions Closes then the the command execution will be completed, else you and go head and kill the session with respect to session Id.*
Which was been explained to me by Pavan in General Database Forum!
I have killed the active session and it was success!

Swap, temporary tablespace and sort operations

Hello.
I have an Oracle 8.1.7 on Linux RH7.1. I see a very interesting situation: when users begin to execute large selects with many sorts operation swapping grows, but temporary tablespace does'nt grow. As I know, when Oracle has no memory to use as "sort_area_size" it uses temporary tablespace. But looks like that when Oracle ask for memory Linux begin to swap (in order to give memory for Oracle). I mean that Oracle don't use temporary tablespace but use swap instead of it. Is it true? Is it problem? Is it Oracle, Linux or my own configuration bug? Is it better to use swap or to use temporary tablespace? What is faster?

login to your database as DBA (SYS AS SYSDBA) and issue the following query:
SQL> select name, value from v$parameter where name = 'sga_max_size' ;
see the value defined for this parameter. If this is larger than what you have configured as your SGA size,
Oracle will assume that it can expand the SGA to "sga_max_size" value, and will try to expand the SGA when
required. This will result in Oracle asking more memory from the linux kernel and then linux starts to use
the swap space.
Try changing the value of this parameter and see if it helps.
