TestStand Action Step Type
Hello, all--
I have a TS question on the Action step type, no adapter. In code I am maintaining, I see this step type used to output information to a custom report. The data/comment to output is put into StationGlobals.Measurement.String and StationGlobals.Measurement.ActionType is set to 1 or 2. The TS documentation tells me the action step is an NI step type, and it doesn't appear that this has been customized in any way. I cannot find any documentation either in built-in help or online explaining how to use the action step in this manner or what values are valid for .ActionType and what they signify.
Am I wrong? Is this a customized step type, or is this use just undocumented? If someone has knowledge about using action step like this, please reply. Thanks very much.

Look in your StationGlobals. Ctrl-G or View->StationGlobals. In there you should have a container (I'm assuming) called Measurements. If you expand that you should see String and ActionType. It should tell you the type in the Type column. It is probably Number since it's set to 1 or 2. Whoever set up your StationGlobals inserted this as I've never seen it before.
The Action Step Type is native to TS and they are probably using those StationGlobals to either get set or set a step property. Go to the step that is doing this and look at the properties. Look in the Expressions and see if they are using them there. They could also be used in the Precondition or PostAction.

The type library information for 'TestStand IVI Step Types' was not found (Error code: -18351)
Hi,
I get the error in the message subject when I add an IVI-C step (no matter IVI Power Supply, IVI Dmm or others) and try to edit the step by pressing Ctrl+E (or double-click the step and click "Edit IVI Power Supply" for instance).
I have installed 2 IVI-C libraries that I downloaded from 'NI idnet' both with IVI technology (namely agn330xa_MS.msi and agn6700_MS.msi). They can both be seen in Add/Remove programs under "NI IVI Specific Drivers" group.
The error message says "Make sure the server is registered".
Does anybody know what server is it complaining about and how can the registration be done?

I believe this error is occurring because the ActiveX components that are used by the IVI step types are either not properly installed or not properly registered. I would recommend first making sure that the IVI compliance package and NI-VISA are installed on the system. If both of these are already installed, I would recommend running the TestStand Version Selector because this should re-register the ActiveX components used by the IVI step type. The TestStand Version Selector can be found by going to the Start Menu>>Programs>>National Instruments>>TestStand 3.5. You will need to select the version of TestStand you want to use and click the "Make Active" button. I have also pasted links below to VISA and the IVI compliance package. Hope this helps!

Latest IVI Class Step Types in TestStand
IVI instrument classes have recently been defined for RF Signal Generator, Spectrum Analyzer and Power Meter. There are IVI drivers for these classes available for download from the Instrument Driver network. However, TestStand3 does no contain step types for accessing these drivers. Does anyone know when NI plans to add support for these to TestStand? Has anyone created step types for these classes, or have an example of how to do this?

There is no documentation on the low-level workings of the TestStand IVI step types. As with many of the step types that have source code, it is available as examples of developing a step type in various languages.
The additional work to add the a new class to the TestStand IVI step types is not small, that is why to date we have not done it. The amount of work could be divided into the following areas:
* Update the TsIviStepTypes to add the new class to the enumeration.
* Create the new step type definition (subproperty structure) based on the IVI spec.
* Upcate the TSIviStep and TSIviSFP code to allow you to edit and perform the work to process the expressions and initiate the various IVI class operations.
* Add low level
IVI class layer logic to talk to the IVI class driver. This piece was previously done in a VB ActiveX control written by the Measurement Studio group in NI.
The last two items are the biggest and they would take some time. That is why I was suggesting creating specific Action steps that call into custom code modules to talk to IVI directly, that is, no edit dialog box, no SFP, etc.

Does IVI Step Type support NI PXIe-4112?

I have a PXIe-4112 and four of PXI-4130. When I try to configure my PXIe-4112 with the PowerSupply IVI Step Type, an error occurred.
An error occurred calling 'RunStep' in 'ISubstep' of 'zNI TestStand Ivi Step Types'
An error occurred while executing the step.
Component Works IVI Control Error: The IVI Configure operation failed for logical name '4112'.

Surely I disabled the 'OVP Enabled' check box at the Edit IVI Power Supply Step Dialog. My system configuration is,

My PXI-4130s are working well with the IVI Step type. Does IVI Step Type support NI PXIe-4112? Or am I doing something wrong about it?

The PowerSupply IVI step will not currently work with the 4112.
The 4112 does not support OVP. If the NIDCPOWER_ATTR_OVP_ENABLED attribute is set to True, the error that you described is expected. If it is set to False, no error should be generated. However, an error is generated when it is set to false. This is incorrect behavior in the driver and has already been documented under Corrective Action Report (CAR) #437105. This issue will likely be rectified in a future version of NI-DCPower.
The PowerSupply IVI step is hard-coded to set the attribute to true or false, based on the value of the check box in the Limit tab. The workaround to this problem is to replace your PowerSupply IVI step with a step based on a code module that doesn't try to set the OVP_ENABLED attribute at all.

Creating numeric limit step types
Hello,
I'm new in TestStand and I'm trying to create my own step types.
Right now I need a step type that reads the voltage from one channel on my MIO board and reads one Digital IO from my DIO board.
I was able to create one step type - run VI and EDIT VI (to choose the channel), but my problem is that my step type is not a numeric step type (so it is not returning a value) and I don't know how to change it!
1. Are there these kind of step types (DAQ) available anywhere?
2. How do I set the type of my step type (I think the ones I'm creating are allways action step types and not tests)?

The easies why to create your NumericLimit type is to select your step type and right mouse click and select create useing then select the NumericLimit type.
This will create a new step type combining your step type with a Numeric Limit step type.
Before you start just rename your step type to someother name by just appending "_1". Then when the new combined step type is created. You can then rename this step type to your original name and easily delete your "_1" named step type.

When i run the sequence with ivi step types in simulation mode i get the error Types do not mathc. The step that generates this error is an IviScope step type and is configured as a measurement. Th weird thing is that in real mode is working perfectly. I have three measure steps and i get the error in all of them. The exact error message is:

Can someone tell me how to fix this problem?. It seems to me that the simulation generates a diferent type of measurement of that generated in real mode.Update:
The simulation driver appears to be raising the error. By switching to specific driver simulation the error does not occur. This may be a problem in either the class simulation driver or the specific driver.

Add-on step types for TestStand?
I am almost certainly reinventing some wheels with Teststand by creating some basic test types.
For example, I just wrote a custom step type for taking an analog measurement from a DAQmx instrument. Surely someone has done this before, and surely someone will want to do it again. There's nothing proprietary about code that simple, and I'd be happy to give it away if there was a place to post it.
Two questions:
1. Is there an open-source repository for sharing custom step types?
2. Are there add-ons for purchase with canned step types beyond those which come with TestStand?

I looked at Averna.com, and I don't see any add-ins available on their website. It looks like they offer services mostly.
It's a good point about TS projects being so varied and customized. However, if custom step types are well architected, as the built-in step types are, then they ought to be reusable by others.
You're right also that I can accomplish my DAQmx steps easily using an Action step with the LV adapter. My motivation for the custom step is to improve the interface for setting up such an action. In particular, when using an IO channel in TS, I have to manually type in a text string for the DeviceName value, whereas I'd like to choose from a list of global names (e.g. with the global channel list control in LV). I can get this affect by using an Enum in a wrapper VI, which maps to an array of channel constants; but this is fragile if the available channels are changed (e.g. added, removed or renamed in MAX).
Additionally, a custom step type is better than a step template for my purposes, because I can propagate changes in the step type to instances of steps throughout the test. This is incredibly valuable to me during development and debugging. It saves me time when I want to update a step that I've used many times throughout a test sequence. Although TS isn't itself a programming language, I find that I expect it to share certain traits with programming languages to facilitate development, such as type abstractions and a strict enforcement of congruency between types and instances. But I digress....

I used a method LoadPrototypeFromMetaDataToken(token,options) to load the return type parameters. I am unable to set the value field in the return parameters for an action step in teststand sequence file programatically using C#.How can I do that.

Certainly it is unusual that you can still see the tables available in your MS Access database but cannot see the columns? I am assuming you are configuring an Open Statement step and are trying to use the ring-control to select columns from your table?
Can you tell me more about the changes you made to your file when you 'changed' it with MS Access? What version of Access are you using? What happens if you try and manually type in an 'Open Statement Dialog's SQL string such as...
"SELECT UUT_RESULT.TEST_SOCKET_INDEX, UUT_RESULT.UUT_STATUS, UUT_RESULT.START_DATE_TIME FROM UUT_RESULT"
Is it able to find the columns even if it can't display them? I am worried that maybe you are using a version of MS Access that is too new for the version of TestSt
and you are running. Has anything else changed aside from the file you are editing?

Automatically Installing Custom Step Types in TestStand 4.2
We have developed Custom Step types that needs to be integrated in a deployed TestStand System (customized UI with TestStand RunTime Engine) . We can customize the palette manually and add the related INI file. We also understand that the information gets saved in Testexec.ini in Cfg folder @ C:\ProgramData\National Instruments\TestStand 4.2\Cfg. What I am curious is how this process can be automated.

I want to first set your expectations for the forums. This is not a place for people to review and rewrite your code for you; this is a place for specific and general questions. I am not saying your question in this thread is inappropriate, because it is a good questions. We should just not post code and ask others to fix it here. If you are looking for this type of service we have alliance members that can help you write your TestStand Operator Interface (www.ni.com/alliance).
As for you question about getting the sequence names for a sequence file that is not the currently running sequence file, you will need to open a reference to that sequence files and then use the API calls that I mentioned in my previous posts. You can use the Enigine.GetSequenceFileEx function to open a reference to sequence file, and you will need to close the reference with the Engine.ReleaseSequenceFile function when you are done using it. After you have a reference to this external Sequence File, you can use the example dll and sequence I previously sent you. I also attach a new sequence file (SeqFile2.seq) plus an updated GetNames.seq to illustrate how to use the above mentioned functions. I hope this helps. Have a great day!

Teststand open database step type modification using DotNet
Dear all,
I am currently looking at ways to change the default means by which TestStand manages database connections and operations to a SQL database. By default, TestStand uses Oledb to connect to any database. However, I would like to use .Net class sqlconnection to open/close and manage connections because of its performance advantage over Oledb.
I have been looking at the provided source code for the database step types (written in CVI) and also researching on how to appropriately call managed code/methods (.Net C#) into unmanaged code (CVI). I would like to (ideally) be able to open a connection via Class Sqlconnection(from .Net), somehow maintain the instance of the class created, and close the connection when the appropriate operations are complete. Marshalling the required object is not possible between managed and unmanaged codes (CVI is not object oriented?) so i would like to find an alternative means of maybe creating a handle for the class and keeping it alive in memory until i manually free it.
Should i be looking also at the DotNet wrappers that come with test stand? any suggestion on a better way of doing this?
I may be totally heading in the wrong direction so any guidance would be most appreciated.

Our company is a custom automation solutions provider and we are tailoring a medical test application for a client in the medical field. We are integrating biometrics identification and authentication into our solution in order to be 21 CFR Part 11 compliant. Part of the compliance means that there cannot be any clear text username/password used in any part of our solution.
So what we hope to do is to change the default process model of test stand to restrict what it can and cannot do. We would like to prevent the test stand sequence writers (our client will write their own test sequences) to have any means of bypassing biometric authentication (i.e via username/password). This means we would either need to completely remove test stand's current open/close connection step types (and rewrite our own in .Net), or, modify the current implementation of test stand database step types (as per my previous post description).
.Net sqlconnection class provides the necessary option of using windows identification to open a sql connection. It also (by my understanding) executes 2.5 times faster compared to Oledb connections.
We are an Alliance member and our Alliance coordinator is Jeremy Taylor. I am posting on this developer forum to gain input from anyone who might have experience in this area and for whoever who will be doing similar projects to ours in the future.

I try to build a step type . this step type specifies an adapter of DLL, which is developed under CVI. I want to use Teststand API functions in CVI to fulfill the following functions.
1, insert a specified built-in or custom step type into current sequence;
2, insert a specified built-in or custom step type into another sequence.

I have done this,dynamically creating a sequence file in teststand programatically through c#.
Problem is
1.I created an action step and object Reference variable for the step, but i am not able to pass parameter values to the objectReference
2.I am not able to load the sequence in to the main Sequence of the sequence file in the teststand. How can I do these two things.Hi,

Currently, functionality for retrieving the Metadata Token for a class constructor or member is not fully provided in the TestStand .NET Adapter API. The DotNetModule.GetConstructorMetadataToken() and DotNetModule.GetMetadataToken() methods only return the correct Metadata Token when the member/constructor prototypes have already been loaded. Thus, in the case of your code, when you call DotNetModule.GetMetadataToken(), the method is returning -1 because the member prototype for the Step you are referring to has not yet been loaded.
That means have to do a workaround for your stuff.
