Text file display options in console

Hi,
I have a real simple console app that reads in a text file and
prints it to the console. It is longer than the console is tall
so it is diplayed starting at the bottom and the user has to scroll up
to start reading at the top of the file.
Is there any way to have it display from the first line down?
The only way I have figured out so far is to break the file into seperate files,
read those in one by one and have the user hit enter to advance to the next page.
Here is how the file is read in:
Scanner fR = new Scanner(new FileReader(usrDbChoice + ".txt"));
if (usrDbChoice.equalsIgnoreCase("help")) {
          while (fR.hasNextLine()) {
              String helpFile = fR.nextLine();
              System.out.println(helpFile);
          }Thanks for any help
bill

This is what I came up with:
if (usrDbChoice.equalsIgnoreCase("help")) {
          boolean hlp=true;
          int cnt=0;
              while(hlp){
               cnt++;
              for(int i=0;i<30;i++){
               String helpFile = fR.nextLine();
              System.out.println(helpFile);
              sc.nextLine();
              if(cnt==3){
               hlp=false;
          }Thanks again :o)

  • Read from text file, display in textarea

    java newbie here - I'm trying to write a chat program that checks a text file every 1 second for new text, and then writes that text to a textArea. I've got the thread setup and running, and it checks and text file for new text - all that works and prints to system console - but I have no idea how to print that text to a textArea.
    I've tried textArea.append, but it seems this only works on the initial run - if I put it in the thread, it won't work. I can make textArea.append work if its in an ActionEvent - but how would I make an ActionEvent run only when my script detects new text from my text file?
    Any ideas on how to do this are appreciated.

    It doesn't matter if you call the textArea.append() when the ActionEvent is triggered or if you call textArea.append() directly from a thread or any other object, the text will be append to te text area. What could have happen is you somehow lost the reference pointing to the textArea that you add to your user interface.
    example:
    JTextArea txtArea = blah..blah..blah
    MyThread t = new myThread(txtArea);
    class MyThread extends Thread{
        private JTextArea txtArea;
        public MyThread(Thread textArea){
            this.textArea = textArea;
        public void run(){
            textArea = new JTextArea(); // opps..you lost the reference to the textArea in the main gui...what you have done is created a new JTextArea object and point to tat..and this textarea object is not visible.

  • Text File Database

    Hello,
    i am a student at The Open University "APEIRON" Travnik (www.out.edu.ba), i am pursuing a Masters degree in IT, we have one Exam called Java programming.
    My practical exam part is to create a program that should enable user to manipulate students grades. The app should allow these options:
    - Read students data,
    Read students data, needs to ask a user for students name and some ID (Surname etc.), and after that lists students grades and Courses.
    - Inserting of new grades,
    Inserting of new grades should have option to insert a new Course name, students name and grade for that Course.
    - Change of existing grades.
    Change of existing grades needs to ask for students name and/or ID, surname and the name of a Course and shows his present grade, Then it should have an option to change students grade for that Course.
    For this App all of validations should be done.
    All of the data (students names, Course names, Grades etc.), needs to be stored in text file database?! Now, i am a newb to Java, but i worked before with VB, and SQL, and i saw there are some similarities to acces and modify data in SQL database. But the problem is, i never worked with Flat text file databases and now i am stuck, i do not even know how to create a text database or even to connect Java to that database.
    Please, if anyone can help me i would be very grateful!?

    Please, if anyone can help me i would be very grateful!?You will need to invest some time in the basics of programming in Java and OOL. There are multiple tutorials available on reading/writing to text files. One thing to note: a text file is treated in the majority of cases like a wipe board. You can write a whole bunch of stuff on it, but if you decide you want to write a line in the middle, then unfortunately you need to read what is currently on the whiteboard, rewrite it, append your new message, then append the remainding text from the white board. IMHO a (RAF) is not applicable in this situation.

  • Writing in a text file at a given place

    Hello !
    Hier is my problem : i've got a text loaded from a text file, displayed into a jEditorPane. I select a part of this text, and I'd like to write a String text at the beginning (and end) of this selection, in the original text file.
    I can get the position of beginning and end of my selection with jEditorPane.getSelectionStart(), but how can I write any String in a .txt file at this given place ?
    Bastet

    Hi again
    if you try to insert html tag in your JEditorPane, you should use the defaults action that HTMLEditorKit & JEditorPane have, for example bold action, italic, underline, color font etc...
    but if you insist to insert tag manually you should use this
    JEditorPane jep;
    btn.actionPerformed(
    new ActionListener (){
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e){
    String st = jep.getSelectedText();
    int pos = jep.getSelectionStart();
    jep.replaceSelection("");
    (jep.getDocument()).insertString(pos,"<b>"+st+"</b>",null);
    this maybe could help you...
    by the way (without offending) that so followed you read the API of JAVA? you could find a lot of your answer

  • Send numeric value in relative time format to text file

    Hi, I'm trying to send a numeric value to a text file (.txt). However, this value must be in Relative Time format, which is displayed correctly in my front panel but not in my text file. The text file displays  it as an integer-.
    I know that this can be achieved by sending a string instead of a numeric value, but the thing is, I'm sending other numeric values along with this one, which means ALL the data must be numeric in order for Labview to send it, since it does not seem to accept a polimorphic array of data.
    Any suggestions?

    Sorry I'm just beginning coding and I'm still a noob. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

    Ok, so if I'm following this correctly you should be able to just loop through all of the files in that folder whose file name matches the pattern and then read the first 22 lines, recording only the first and the last.
    Exactly how you store the animal data probably depends on how you are going to display it and what else you are going to do with it.  Is there anything other than name and cage number that should be associated with each animal?
    You might want to make a dataset with a datatable to describe the animal, or you might write a class, or you might just use something generic like a Tuple.  Here's a simple class example:
    Public Class Animal
    Public Property Name As String
    Public Property Cage As String
    Public Overrides Function ToString() As String
    Return String.Format("{0} - {1}", Name, Cage)
    End Function
    End Class
    With that you can use a routine like the following to loop through all of the files and read each one:
    Dim animals As New List(Of Animal)
    Dim folderPath As String = "E:\Furry Friends Animal Shelter Solution\Furry Friends Animal Shelter\"
    For Each filePath As String In System.IO.Directory.GetFiles(folderPath, "Report Q?.txt")
    Using reader As New System.IO.StreamReader(filePath)
    Dim lineIndex As Integer = 0
    Dim currentAnimal As New Animal
    While Not reader.EndOfStream
    Dim line As String = reader.ReadLine
    If lineIndex = 0 Then
    currentAnimal.Name = line
    ElseIf lineIndex = 22 Then
    currentAnimal.Cage = line
    Exit While
    End If
    lineIndex += 1
    End While
    animals.Add(currentAnimal)
    End Using
    Next
    'do something to display the animals list
    Then you might bind the animals list to a ListBox, or loop through the list and populate a ListView.  If you decided to fill a datatable instead of making Animal instances, then you might bind the resulting table to a DataGridView.
    There are lots of options depending on what you want and what all you need to do.

  • "Open in Dashboard" option not available on text files

    I'm trying to web clip a text file that contains some reference information that I update from time to time.
    I've created a simple text file, put it in the Public folder of DropBox and have a URL that when I open in safari, displays the contents of this text file (extension is .txt).  Once that page is up, however, the option to "Open in Dashboard..." is greyed out and disabled.
    If I change the extension to .html it works fine but I don't want to format it in html.
    Is this by design to prevent text files from opening as a web clipped widget in Dashboard?  Any way around it?

    Hi Mike,
    Try to add the PWA URL to the compatibility sites. Also press F12 (developer tool) and set the default browser as IE8 or 9.
    Then you can refer to this

    There was a basic problem in the logic of that code, that resulted in the assumption (by the JRE) that every file the user attempted to load, was located in the 'current directory'. It was fixed by abandoning the String based file name of the file, and instead setting openFile to the selected file in the chooser. I also demolished the loading code by replacing the JTextArea with a JEditorPane (much easier).

  • Please help! I defragged my hard drive and now Illustrator CS6 is trying to open all of my complex Illustrator files with a "Text Import Options" box as if they are text files, and they are not opening!

    Please help! Illustrator CS6 started trying to open all of my complex.ai files with a "Text Import Options" box as if they were text files, and they are not opening!  Help!

    Hi Monika,
    I have spent the last two or three days trying to do what you suggested.  I uninstalled Adobe 6 from Windows.  Some files that CS6 placed on my system during installation remained, including fonts and .dll files.
    I had to abandon the Cleaner Tool you suggested because in one screen it allowed me to specify removing CS6 only, but on the following screen it only gave on option to remove ALL Adobe programs.  I could not do that because I didn't have the serial number handy for CS3 in case I want to reinstall it at some point.
    I tried to get technical help with the Cleaner Tool problem but no definitive help was available, so I reinstalled CS6 again without having the benefit of the Cleaner Tool.  I tried to get the serial number for CS3 so I could use the Cleaner Tool but spent 2 wasted hours in chat.  Even though I had a customer number, order number, order date, place of purchase, the email address used AND 16 digits of the serial number, in two hours the agent couldn't give me the serial number.  After two hours I had nothing but instructions to wait another 20 minutes for a case number.
    Illustrator CS6 is still trying to open some backups as Text and otherNone of the problems have been fixed.  I have tried to open/use the .ai files in CS6 installed on another system and am getting the same result, so I don't think the software was damaged by the cleaner.  The hard drive cleaner is well-known and I've run it many times without any problem to previous versions of Illustrator or any other programs.
    When I ordered, the sale rep promised good technical support and gave me an 800 number, but after I paid the $2000, I learned that the 800 number she gave me doesn't support CS6 and hangs up on me.  Adobe doesn't call it a current product even though they just sold it to me about 3 weeks ago.
    Would appreciate any help you experts can offer.  If I can't solve this, the last backup I can use was from June and I will have lost HUNDREDS of hours of work and assets that I cannot replace.

  • Text File Data not Displaying completely

    Hi All,
    Have one issue. The program correctly extracts the data & export to Excel. All column /field data's are dispalying.However while saving this data in a text file in Aplications server file path, though all column/ field data are extracting bit it is not displaying complete column/field data's i.e last 3 or 4 column data's are not displaying after 257 character space  (but actually it extracts data.It is just not dispalying while i am checking text file via AL11).
    What could be the reason of not dipslaying the all column/filed values in text file wherea as while exporting to excel it is displaying? is there any character length constraint for text file?
    Thanks

    There is no restriction on the file size which you can upload on the app server. AL11 is nothing but a report program & there is a limitation on the max number of characters displayed on the page.

    We have used "Rich text box" in Infopath Form which is not displaying option to get images from Computer.

    can you please help me out to get this option.

    Hi,
    From your description, there is no “From Computer” option to get images with rich text box in InfoPath form.
    Per my knowledge, by design there are “From Address” and “From SharePoint” options without “From Computer” option in rich text box in InfoPath form. As a workaround, you can develop a custom InfoPath Rich Text box to do it.
    About developing a custom InfoPath control, I suggest you create a new thread on the forum “Visual Studio Tools for Office”, more experts will assist you with InfoPath development.

  • How to display a text file in a html page?

    I have written a servlet that executes a batch file whose output is saved to a txt file. I am attempting to display content of the text file as a html page from the servlet but am struggling I have attempted to read the file and output it as shown below but it is not displaying the correct data
    Appreciate some help
    Thanks in advance
    Amjad
    Runtime r = Runtime.getRuntime();
    Process p = r.exec("C:\\Condor\\test\\QueStatus.bat");
    PrintWriter out;
    String title = "Que Status";
    response.setContentType("text/html");
    out = response.getWriter();
    FileReader fr = new FileReader ("C:\\Condor\\test\\output.txt");
    for (int chr = fr.read(); chr != -1; chr = fr.read()){
         out.print(chr);
    }

    Couple of things. First you should search the forums for how to properly exec a dos batch file. There are some problems you may run into especially with io. I suspect you may not actually be running that batch file at all.
    I would test outputing a text file separately from execing the batch file.
    Here is some code so you don't have to output 1 char at a time. Setting the content length and closing the output stream might help.
    File downloadFile = new File("c:\\blah\\blah\\blah");
    response.setContentLength((int)downloadFile.length());
    response.setContentType("text/html");
    ServletOutputStream out = response.getOutputStream();
    FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream(downloadFile);
    byte[] buffer = new byte[1024];
    int bytesRead;
    while ((bytesRead = fis.read(buffer)) != -1) {
    out.write(buffer, 0, bytesRead);
    fis.close();
    out.close();

    It's not possible to read from a file without using classes from the core API*. You'll have to get clarification from your instructor as to which classes are and are not allowed.

    *Unless you write a bunch of JNI code to replicate what the java.io classes are doing.

  • The right-click link menu in Firefox 29.0.1 on Mac OSX 10.9.3 does not fully display options (cuts off text)

    When I right click on a link, the usual menu I used to get in older versions of firefox still shows up. However, it shows up in a box that's much, much smaller than the size of the box in previous versions. The text gets cut off and while I can scroll up and down, I can't scroll left to right to read the text of the option. Actually, I've noticed that this happens with most right click menus now.
    For example, if I right-click on a link, I get:
    Open Li...
    Open Li...
    Open Li...
    (down facing arrow to hover over to see the rest of the options)
    All of the system and Firefox fontsize, menu size etc. are at their default. I haven't changed anything.

    You can check for problems caused by a corrupted localstore.rdf file.
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Corrupt_localstore.rdf
    You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
    *Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
    Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.
    See "Creating a profile":
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
    If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem
