Text files showing up as binary in Yosemite

Anyone having trouble with text files?
I have a dumpster of text files in which I keep a lot of general information, including lots of knowledgebase items I keep handy.  I have my text files set to open with TextWrangler.   I've used this as the main way I work since 10.6 -- I search with Alfred/Spotlight, and GREP search text files with TextWrangler.  This is the way I keep lots and lots of general notes that I need to reference.
Well, with Yosemite, it previews all previous plain .txt files as binary, or at least that's what it looks like.  When I open and save them, they are now binary static/noise, and that's how they save.
If I create a brand new text file and save as a .txt file with TextWrangler, then everything is fine.
I don't think this is TextWrangler's fault, because previewing/opening files with other text editors, such as even TextEdit, still shows binary.
As described above, this is pretty much a baseball bat right into my spokes.  It makes Yosemite unusable for me.

The general approach at this time is to ask if you've checked for any problematic fonts (all languages) with Apple's Font Book (look in the Applications folder). Find and remove all duplicates also.
Start there to be sure all fonts that are in play come out with a clean bill of health.
Also, don't hesisate to perform wholesale deletion of old and/or little used fonts - be skeptical of anything that has come from Office 2008, including those related to an Equation Editor installation.
By all means be sure your 3rd party apps are Snow Leopard compatible and know the rumors are that 10.6.2 will be play better w/fonts in some cases.

  • Export to text file shows extra character at line 60, 120 so on

    Hi,
    I am using Crystal report 13 with .net 4.0 ( Visual Studio 2010)
    I have an issue while exporting from CR to Text file,
    After every 60 lines some special character is inserted in the text file. That might be the new page character.
    Is this the limitation of crystal report that the data is not shown is pages?
    If yes, if there any workaround for this?
    Can I set the pagination off for the report- either from .net code OR on the report itself so that I wonu2019t see the unwanted character?

  • Strange double identity issue in terminal, text files showing as unix terminal files [suspected 'workgroup' issue?]

    Hey everyone. Using Mavericks 10.9.2 but a few odd things that don't seem easy for me to pin down or change keep coming up. Hopefully most the things I'm concerned about people here can prove me wrong. Firstly over the last few weeks I've noticed that when I log into terminal half the time it says the correct thing, ie, garys-mac-pro:~ gary$
    But sometimes a totally different identity seems to start up, so the text changes from the above to sudo-seedling:~ gary$ and I noticed the following text in my sharing center in system prefs looks like this:
    Terminal: http://i60.tinypic.com/w814eq.png
    Sharing: http://oi60.tinypic.com/w814eq.jpg
    "Your computers name is: gary’s Mac Pro
    Computers on your local network can access your computer at:
    sudo-seedling.local"
    I'd've never changed the name myself, and wouldn't have used that either, which is what aroused my attention. One final thing that I'm not 100% sure is relevant or not is that of late I keep getting 'shared devices/servers', sometimes with names you might expect like BTHUB4 (why would they put a server with an admin password I've not been told in my local network though?) another called WorkGroup (again a server that I can not get any info or access from without a password) and a few times others called ADMIN. I live at home with one other person who doesn't even have a phone, let alone a computer. When these turn up there's no info I can get on them by right clicking get info (all identifiable info just has a perpetuating spinning white wheel), they don't even seem to be accessible though terminal, I tried for a while.
    [EDIT: A brand new 'shared' something has now popped up, is called home, same *** all the other ones (screencap http://i.imgur.com/fZTFsg3.png )
    I've also noticed two similarly "hidden" elusive drives/servers in my root directory called home and net with very odd properties:  they say always say they are zero bytes and created in 2001 =/ But the "date modified" date is always right up to date, and I get the same blank spinning wheels for any info from them.  just dont like having so many new, hidden, remote and unexpected things on my MAC.. So why can I not delete them? Anyone know what these are? Are they normal? See this picture http://oi62.tinypic.com/iyzyc1.jpg
    One final thing I noted that I have no clue about and defo did not set up are the settings in network center for WINS and DNS, the WINS has my 'so called' netbios name, and below that that I'm working in a workgroup called workgroup  http://i57.tinypic.com/jadxmh.png
    And towards DNS both boxes are greyed out and unchangeable, don't know if that is normal or not. Screncap http://oi60.tinypic.com/szbkmc.jpg

    I need to read binary file (actualy text file was

    After finished program, I must store this text file
    to binary format for use in next time. Anyone have
    any idea or suggestion will be usefull and great
    thanksLook, every bit of text stored in a computer is stored in a binary format. The familiar ASCII bytes format is merely the most common of them. But, to the filing system, it's just another binary file.
    Java deals with many different ways of encoding text as binary. Mostly these are called "character encodings". The second most common one is UTF-8 which stores non-latin chacters as multi byte sequences. Also java can store and retrieve text from mixed file formats in which only part of the data is text.
    You'll get nowhere unless you can find out what binary format the text is stored in.
    In general java handles binary using Stream objects and text using Reader and Writer objects.

  • Filling an object ArrayList from a text file

    Hi all,
    I am developing a project (for university) which has a class named "SupplierAgent", which is required to keep database of custom objects of type "InventoryItem". Basically these consist of a String (for the name of the item), an int representing the quantity on hand, and an int representing the unit price (in cents). I wish to have this inventory loaded from a text file rather than a binary file - that way the user can add new items to the file before loading the agent.
    I have included the code below, which works provided the file is rigidly structured. The main problem is the user having to type the path to the file: I cannot guarantee the user will have the file in any folder, and so the user is required to type in the absolute path. Is there any way to make this less annoying? Or is there a better way of loading a preset inventory while allowing the user to edit that inventory at will?
    I have included the current code below. it's not exactly in accordance with coding standards, because we are using the JADE agent architecture (hence why the method is called "action") rather than something more informative.
    I should also mention that it uses a command line interface. The "io" class basically includes a scanner and the System.out.println method. Its "yesOrNo()" method is for convenience: it asks the user a question and allows them to select y or n.
    public void action() {
                boolean loadFromFile = io.yesOrNo("Would you like to load the inventory from a file?");
                if(loadFromFile) {
                    BufferedReader br = null;
                    boolean fileFound = false;
                    while(!fileFound) {
                        io.output("Please enter the absolute path to the file, including filename extension:  ");
                        inventoryFile = io.input();
                        try {
                            FileReader fr = new FileReader(inventoryFile);
                            br = new BufferedReader(fr);
                            fileFound = true;
                        catch (FileNotFoundException e) {
                            io.output("File not found.  ");
                    String fileLine = null;
                    int lineNumber = 1;
                    InventoryItem item = null;
                    try {
                        while((fileLine = br.readLine()) != null) {
                            switch((lineNumber % 4)) {
                            case 1: item = new InventoryItem();
                                    item.setName(fileLine); break;
                            case 2: item.setQuantity(Integer.parseInt(fileLine));
                            case 3: item.setPrice(Integer.parseInt(fileLine));
                            case 0: inventory.add(item);
                        io.output("Inventory loaded successfully\n");
                    catch(Exception e) {
                        io.output("Error at line " + lineNumber + " of inventory file\n");
                        io.output("Unable to fill inventory.  Please ensure file is structured correctly\n");
                        io.output("See readme for explanation of file structure requirements\n");
                        myAgent.doDelete();

    You can use JFileChooser to allow the user to navigate to the required file.

  • Text created in Premiere showing other text files in the timeline and exports.

    Hi,
    I'm creating slates with text generated in Premiere. For each new slate I am duplicating a text layer, Option + Dragging the duplicate file over the text I'd like to replace, then opening the new text layer in the text editor and updating the information.
    Things seem fine at first and then randomly text layers in the timeline will show text from other files in the timeline. If I open the text file up in the text editor I see the correct info but not in the timeline.
    The only fix I have found is to delete render files, move the text layer around in the timeline, quit and re-open. But still, sometimes when I export, the export preview window will show the wrong text and when I export the file I create shows the wrong text as well.
    It seems like Premiere is getting confused by multiple text files in the timeline and is pointing to the wrong cache files.
    Thoughts would be a huge help!

    Thanks for the tip Kevin. Anything I can do to avoid this in the future?
    I've had this happen on a number of projects. My media and project files are on a SAN, cache and previews are local.
    Thanks,
    Mike Brown

    When it was explained to me it didn't sound to hard of a task, I have no LabVIEW experience and the tutortial sucks.

    StevenD: FYI, I did NOT give you the one star rating. I would never do that!

    Well, this is an assignment, so it is probably homework.
    Why else would anyone give HIM such an assigment, after all he has no LabVIEW experience and the tutorials are too hard for him?
    This would make no sense unless all of it was just covered in class!
    This is not a free homework service with instant gratification.
    OK! Let's do it step by step. I assume you already have a VI with the digital indicators.
    "...but have no idea where to begin".
    open notepad.
    decide on a format, possibly one line per indicator.
    type the document.
    close notepad.
    open LabVIEW.
    Open the existing VI with all the indicators.
    (are you still following?)
    look at the diagram.
    Who made the program?
    Does the code make sense so far?
    Is it a statemachine or just a bunch of crisscrossed wires?
    Where do you want to add the file read?
    How should the file be read (after pressing a read button, at the start of the program ,etc.)
    See how far you get!

  • Showing Text file as external table without trimming spaces

    Hi all:
    I am trying to display a text file from db sever with original spacing.
    Well it's not entirely related to APEX.
    This is how external table is created:
    create table u_x
      (rowline varchar2(255))
         ORGANIZATION EXTERNAL
           TYPE ORACLE_LOADER
           DEFAULT DIRECTORY ext_tab         <-- this is a dir i have created
           access parameters
           records delimited by newline
           fields notrim
           LOCATION ('aaa.txt')
    REJECT LIMIT UNLIMITED;
    on the first line of the aaa.text (its a report), it shows something like:
    Sat Dec 29                                                                Page 1
    but when I do select * from u_x , the result shows:
    Sat Dec 29 Page 1
    all above is done in sql workshop /sql command in APEX 4.2.1 (db 10.2.0.5)
    Is there any way to preserve the spaces between "29" and "Page"?
    (the result compressed all spaces in-between to 1 space).
    I think the ideal way is to invoke client's notepad to open the server's text file.
    anyway to generate the link?
    Thanks
    John

    Well, I have tried to download the file using below procedure.
    create or replace PROCEDURE download_bfile (

          file_in        IN   VARCHAR2
       AS
          lob_loc    BFILE;
          v_mime     VARCHAR2 (48);
          v_length   NUMBER(16);
       BEGIN
          lob_loc := BFILENAME (UPPER (directory_in), file_in);
          v_length := DBMS_LOB.getlength (lob_loc);
          -- set up HTTP header
          -- use an NVL around the mime type and
          -- if it is a null set it to application/octect
          -- application/octect may launch a download window from windows
          OWA_UTIL.mime_header (nvl(v_mime, 'application/octet'), FALSE);
          -- set the size so the browser knows how much to download
          HTP.p ('Content-length: ' || v_length);
          -- the filename will be used by the browser if the users does a save as
          HTP.p (   'Content-Disposition:attachment; filename="'
                 || SUBSTR (file_in, INSTR (file_in, '/') + 1)
                 || '";'
          -- close the headers
          OWA_UTIL.http_header_close;
          -- download the BLOB
          WPG_DOCLOAD.download_file (lob_loc);
          apex_application.stop_apex_engine;
       END download_bfile;
    I run it inside sql command in apex, but it does not show a pop window to save the file,
    it displays the whole text content of the file in the result window.
    Any idea why the save-as window does not pop up?
    thanks,
    John.

  • Uploading data to BW from a TEXT file , string fields show error

    I am trying to upload a TEXT file to SAP BW:
    City     Value   Date
    City1    100.00   20060101
    City2    200.00   20060102
    City3    300.00   20060103
    The text file has 3 fields:
    City (CHAR -STRING)
    Value (Numc)
    Date   (Dats)
    I have defined a file source system, the infosource and the datasource in order to upload the text file to BW.
    When uploading the infopackage of the text file, an error appears for the infoobject of type CHAR (STRING).
    The PSA is loading the record but it is in RED status showing that the characters are not allowed in the CITY field.
    The upload is made right if i substitute the string with a number, then the upload shows the green light.
    I need to upload string values to the CITY infoobject in my infocube, but the infopackage shows the red light when the text file includes characters like 'City1', it only permits numbers in the CHAR field.
    Please help me in order to upload a text file with CHAR (string) values to BW.
    Thanks in advance for your valuable help.
    I am working with CSV files.

    Hi Cempro,
    Always remember, the input file should have upper case letters. In your case, you have given in lowercase , so please change to upper case and run the Infopackage again. This should go fine.
    note: If the input file has lowercase letters, it need a different approach, meaning, you need to check few boxes. So, to avoid all thet, just change in your input file and just run the Infopackage.
    Remember, to do an ENTER at the "input file" section in the "external data" tab in Infopackage screen. This way, you are instructing the Infopackage to use the newly changed file.
    Thanks,
    Raj

  • Loading from a Flat file: Binary and Text File

    Hi,
    Does anyone know what the difference is between loading from a binary file or text file?
    Ramon

    Hi,
    the difference is that text files contain lines (or records) of text and each of these has an end-of-line marker automatically appended to the end of it whenever you indicate that you have reached the end of a line.
    So what happens when we read from a text file is that the end-of-line character for the operating system that we are using gets converted into a low value end-of-string indicator and when we write to a file the appropriate end-of-line character(s) get written when we indicate the end of the line. This makes the reading and writing of text files much easier because the appropriate end-of-line markers are handled for us.
    With a binary file none of these conversions take place. When we read a binary file the end-of-line characters for our operating system will be read into the string and treated no different than any other character. When we write to a binary file the only end-of-line markers that are written will be those that we code into the output ourselves and hence will be exactly as we code it regardless of the operating system that we are running on. This makes it much easier for us when the file does not contain straight text and the end-of-line marker does not separate lines of text but rather appears as part of the non-text data content of the file.

  • How can I convert Binary File to Normal Text File?

    Hi,
    I need to read a binary file and need to conevrt as normal text file. The binary file contains some number & String (Names) with fixed length. It is the combination of Char, String, Integer, Byte & Single Bit.
    I used DataInputStream but I didnt get the expected output. Can anybody help me in reading a binary file?
    Thanks & Regards,

    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/essential/io/dataIO.html provides an example of using DataInputStream to do what you want.

  • Binary search in text files

    Hi all,
    I'm thinking about how to implement a binary sort to get,given a key, a value from a text file with a list of words in order. I saw randomaccessfile for j2se and I know that this work it's usually done by seek functions but how to do the seek work without the File class , with only the InputStream and Reader? I'm talking about the j2me midp 2 cldc 1.1 api, is there some methods or class to use for this thing? How could be implemented a binary search in a text file resident in the /res dir or the JAR or which could be the problems that cannot make possible this staff? If there was something like seek one way could be that one of decide a common length of words to read so going to the half of the text file it's possible with simply multiplication, and the do the binary search things.But for now I haven't found any resources or help.
    I hope you can help me to understand, thank you

    Hallo all,
    it is NOT the problem to locate the text I need to find in the fmb, or fmx.
    The problem is that since I want to change not only the text but also some more code around I want to do this in Form Builder - Object Navigator. And I'm not able to discover in which trigger or procedure the text appears.
    I do not want to edit fmx, or fmb in a text editor because I suupose theer are some checksums hidden for the format.
    -duro
    BTW in FMT there is no code seen (only some binary) for v6i as it was in v4.5.

  • Show Select query result in the text file.

    Hi all,
    i want to show my select statment records in the text file.
    thanks in advance.
    Mob.

    you cannot do a select in a stored procedure.
    you could do something like
    SQL> set serverout on
    SQL> spool output.txt
    SQL> declare
           x varchar2(40);
         begin
           select * into x from dual;
           dbms_output.put_line(x);
         end;
    X
    SQL> spool offor use the utl_file package (more powerfull, less secure, write on the db-server instead of the sqlplus-client)

  • Binary search in a text file.

    Is it possible to carry out binary search directly in the text file without passing the file data into a List data, in order to save RAM?

    If the file is sorted, and if you know what byte position each record begins at, then, yes, using RandomAccessFile you can do this.
    I don't know if it's really the best approach though. If the file's not all that big, or if the relevant parts of its content can be represented in more compact form, then sorting in memory will be simpler and quicker.

  • What are the text files that suddenly showed up in the Preferences folder?

    I just noticed a group of text files in the Preferences folder that I haven't noticed before. All of them were created within a 3-minute period on 12/31/2008. The names are in sets of 4 or 5 that follow this scheme:
    np_334572current
    np_334572services
    np_334572servicesnew
    np_334572sets
    np_334572system
    The default app to open these is Property List Editor.
    They haven't been modified since they were created, even though I've been adding, deleting, and modifying apps and their preferences since then. Anybody know what they are? Can or should I delete these?
    Thanks in advance.

    Dick,
    To be honest I don't know what program they are related to. However If the files are located in ~/Library/Preferences (Where is ~ = your home directory) Then You should be safe in moving/deleting them, at worst you will have to reset the settings in one of your apps. What that folder is mainly used for is say for example you have your dock show/hide it self. That will be saved to a plist file in the preferences folder. If you delete or move the dock's plist out of there your dock on your next login will go back to the default view of Mac OS.
    Now To be honest you don't have to move/delete those files that are there, especially since at most you will probably reset some of the preferences you set in an application. But its up to you. Also you could always move it first to see what app it is and either move it back or delete it later.
    Hope that helps,
    Weston
