The new common forum

I am so irritated already by the forum's new habit of jumping to the most recent post that this common forum idea is probably the end of my participation.  I simply don't want to read through hundreds of Win subject lines to find something relevant to the Mac, or constantly open threads that turn out to be Win only. I have looked at it, but I am not happy. I'm stuck back at CS2, so many of the posts are not of any interest anyway. My plan to upgrade both computer and software is on indefinite hold until our new socialist man leaves office, and the new guy probably can't solve the problem either, so what's a boy to do?

I don't care about Windows issues and I don't care about Mac issues. I come to a Photoshop forum to discuss and learn about Photoshop.
As one that uses Photoshop on multiple platforms and pays attention to both the Mac and Windows forums, there is actually very little that is unique to a platform. If platform specific discussions are there, they have been easily ignored.
There is a certain decline of the Photoshop forums and I don't think it is due to banning some of the 'old-timers' or any restructuring of the forum. The internet has simply changed. 10 years ago, a forum or mailing list was the best place to learn about new tools and techniques. Now we have very capable search engines to find information on demand, podcasts/news sites/bloggers to keep us up-to-date, and YouTube/Lynda.com for tutorials. That leaves the Photoshop forums mostly for new users to come to holler "my Adobe is broken".  There is little reason for a forum regular to care about what happens to the forum structure. We've already been shuffling toward the exit.

  • How Do I Use the New Adobe Forums?

I know this thread will be moved somewhere else, but I have no clue where the "forum bugs" forum is, so I'm posting here in "Premiere" since that is where I hang out most of the time.
In the old forums I was able to get in, find the hot issues, either find an answer and get out.  Or I could quickly get in and find others who hadn't received help, yet, try to help and get back to work.  The primary sorting columns that made this possible were the "number of views" and number of replies.  Maybe it was the same column.  Either way, if I was wondering whether it was safe to go into the water with the latest release of Premiere Pro, I could quickly log in, sort by the number of repies (high to low) and discover the most vicious, recent bugs Adobe had introduced.  If I was feeling altruistic, I could log in, sort by replies (low to high) and find out what issues nobody had resolved, yet.  Maybe I could help; maybe I couldn't.  How can I get this column/view back in the new forums (or better, yet, revert to the old forum layout)?

    Unwanted Email notices
Click your avatar picture near the upper right corner (slightly to the left of the pencil) and select PREFERENCES then set all Email Preferences to OFF and click Save at the bottom left
    AND
Another new "feature" is that Jive7 is oriented toward social networking... so every time you start or reply to a message you are automatically added to a FOLLOW list... meaning you receive a notification of every subsequent message in that thread
Click the FOLLOW link at the upper right and select STOP FOLLOWING... and don't click the link again to check your status, as you will then be added to the CONNECTIONS STREAM and you will have to uncheck that option as well
And, after you post in a message thread and select Stop Following, you need to do it all over again the next time you add a reply to the same message thread, since EVERY POST adds you to the automatic Follow list

  • Observations on the "New & Improved" Forum

I've now lived with the new forum for a bit. I've been posting and replying to similar threads in the Adobe Premiere Video Lounge, since the changeover, but after some reflection, realize that this is a better place to, er-r-r vent. Still, there are some good points, so I'll list those first.
Ah, the new fora. Still getting used to them. Here are some reflections on the Pros & Cons, as I see them with IE7:
    Pros:
1.) The general layout is nice
2.) Being able to add a link quickly, is a real positive
3.) The indentation of replies, to other than the OP. (More on this in the Cons section)
4.) The formatting capabilities are great, and easy to set, plus apply
5.) Ease of adding screen-caps, etc., is greatly appreciated.
    Cons:
1.) Sometimes really slow, but could just be server overload, or maintenance?
2.) Sometimes the server will jump fora. You will be replying to a post in, say the PrPro CS4 forum, get the editing window, and hit Post Reply, to see that it went to some thread in the Acrobat forum.
3.) The slight color differentiation between "read," [updated] and "unread" threads on the main page, could be much better.
4.) The loss of the "red flags," is greatly missed
5.) The "New" banner on new posts is greatly missed
6.) The expansion of all replies, when opening an older thread is bothersome. I do like the Reply to and the indentation in Threaded View (not available in Flattened View, though now you get the post numbers, which are good for referencing in later posts). On the Chowhound (food and wine) forum, one has the ability to Reply To and the Replies are indented, as here. The biggest difference is that when one goes to an article for the first time, all replies are open and threaded, like here. Once they have visited that thread once, however, on the next visit all replies and Replies To will be closed. It's very easy to see the new posts since the last visit. Each reply has an "Expand" button, should you need to read it, and there is also an "Expand All" button at the top of the article page. This does away with the need for the old "New" banners from the previous forum. I do have to say that I was one, who championed the Reply To and indentions. I just did not expect it to be quite like this. Be careful what you wish for...
7.) Learning to NOT use Back, once I’ve posted, is coming along slowly
8.) Searching the old fora was pretty easy, if limited. The new Search *starts out* looking good, until you try to limit the Search to just one (or a group) of forum. Then, you have to scroll down a list of every product (and also many languages) that Adobe has ever made. You cannot override the drop-down (that I can find), and just type in "Encore," or "Premiere." The additon of "People" is good, but it seems that the search engine can't find most of them, even some of the forum MOD's.
9.) When a forum has multiple pages and you are past #1, going back to "Discussion" always takes me back to page #1. There has got to be some navigational trick that will get me back to page #X, regardless of whether I’ve posted, or am just reading. When you are doing anything on a subsequently later page, in a multi-page forum, you cannot stay there, even if all you do is read one reply. You are ALWAYS taken back to page 1.
10.) The loss of many stickies, especially some of the FAQ’s and instruction on posting good questions with proper info. Seems that the various MOD's are working overtime on getting many of these back. I applaud their efforts. It is not being missed.
11.) The inability for the cookies to be recognized, when entering the forum and logging-in is a hassle. A bigger hassle is getting logged-out, even if you just posted 40 sec. before. For all longer posts, I’ve taken to using a wordprocessor, as so many of my posts have been lost, because I got logged-out in the process. I have used the "Recover Previous," that in some cases saved having to re-type everything, but like an AutoSave in Premiere, you could still have lost a lot of editing.
I will have to say that often I have been amazed, as I’ve gone three full days and each visit I’ve been logged-in fine. Other times, I will have to manually do it for each and every session.
Just some personal observations, with more in the works, as I explore.

    Thank you for your comments,
I was happy with the former forum's layout.  This doesn't add anything of value and wastes lots of space on-screen, which can be mitigated with scripts.
I liked the old format as well. There are some features, however, that I like in the new forum format. The "More Like This" frame, for instance. I could have lived with the old, but this aspect of the new is not all bad, IMHO.
Now we have an icon to do it easily, agreed.  But was it really so difficult to type <a href="URL">text</a>?
Well, for things like this, I had a "cheat sheet" of the various HTML code. I think the simple icon is an improvement.
I never want to post in Arial.  The formatting choices often change by themselves from what you have selected, also.  Very quirky editor.  Formatting is definitely easier now, I will admit.
I guess that I spend too much of my time doing titles for video, so Arial is a font that gets used a lot.
True, but using Pixentral for those wasn't exactly a big deal.
I find the new method much easier, and far quicker. I can create and add a screen-cap in moments. The biggest time consuming step is usually opening PrPro and PS, to do the cap, caption it, then Save to my Adobe Forum images folder - click and it's linked.
Agreed, but this is a minor issue.
I do not know how minor. When designing a site (or an ad), readibility is a big point.
This isn't a bug — it's a feature!  It discourages users from following long and complex threads and thereby makes threads simple and short, so that questions get asked, answered, and moved on.  Why should Adobe encourage people to engage in lengthy discussions about color management, JPEG inaccuracy, or other esoteric topics using its servers?  Why not simply facilitate asking and answering?  A user forum isn't a BBS; it's a substitute for a paid help desk!
I'm not so sure on Adobe's motive then, per your statements. It would seem that a software company, such as Adobe, would be most interested in the clients getting the most our of their software purchases. If they can learn color for print, video or the Web, from the forum, it would be in Adobe's best interest to support that sort of discussion. Heck, it would save having to discuss it on Adobe TV. If what you say is the Adobe "party line," why do so many of the fora have "Lounges?" I mean, what would be the purpose of that?
Go back to the top of the page and click on "Up to Discussions in Forum comments".  It will take you to the last page of the forum topic list you were on.  I asked repeatedly that a copy of this link be added to the bottom of the page and was, predictably, ignored.  I have read that once you have done this, you can use the back button to get to the same page, but I have not verified when and whether this works.
Unfortunately, on IE7, that takes one to the first page, of a multi-page forum. So does every other operation, unless you click back up the hierarchy, and then you go up a level in the fora, say from PrPro CS4 to the main PrPro level. Maybe it's my browser, but everything takes you to page 1, or up a level, never to the page you're on.
The comment about the Back button was specific to the view of the page with one's recently posted reply. In the old forum, Back took you to the forum article page, one level up from the thread that you just posted to. Now, it takes you "back" to a blank reply editing screen. I was just so used to hitting Back from the old days, that it's a habit I have to break 100%.
I haven't had the log-out problem during a session, but I haven't been nearly as active here since Jive.  The cookie good for only 24 hours is a PITA.
I've had days, when I did not get logged-out, but too many more, where it happens all of the time.
    Again, thanks for the comments,
    Hunt

  • Using the new-look forums, asking for positive comments

    Dear Fellow Users,
I am starting a discussion on how to make the most of this revised website for Apple Support Communities. Please keep this discussion positive. Please confine complaints to one of the many negative threads.
Remember that many of these changes are the result of feedback to Apple. We may have got what we wished for.
    Gains:
    - Spell checker in the Reply box;
    New ways of working:
    - The blue dot has gone. I can't tell which discussions I have or haven't read.
Tip by deggie. In the home page of a forum, click to the right of the address bar of your browser, add /content at the end of the URL. Press enter. You will see three options across the page just above the threads: All Content, User Tips and Discussions. Click on Discussions. Threads with new content will have titles that are in bold. Now save that page in your browser bookmarks. For example, my bookmark for the 'Using Apple Support Communities' forum, shows this URL:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/using_apple_support_communities/content? filterID=contentstatus%5Bpublished%5D~objecttype~objecttype%5Bthread%5D
And the view is Bold for unread
    - The forums keep logging me off after a period of inactivity.
Good. That may stop the spammers posting multiple messages that have nothing to do with the purpose of a forum.
    More gains or workarounds, anyone?
    Regards,
    Ian.

You guys are worse than the complainers we get with iOS or OSX updates (and this is not directed specifically at you PV - you were just the last post). As Yellowbox indicated, there are already a plethora of negative posts about the changes. So, go there and complain.
People don't like change, OK, I get that. But seriously, when it is foist upon you, ******** and moaning isn't going to put it back the way it was. Why not spend all that energy in trying to figure out the way to make the most out of what you have been given. Not everything about the new site is horrible. Sure there are improvements to be made, but we are supposed to be people with creative minds, interest in challenges, abilities to suss out the more esoteric aspects of things.
As I indicated in one of my earlier posts, because I have a catholic approach to reading the boards, I am not seeing some of the issues that folks who like to support specific communities are having. But, for my purposes, I find it much easier to move back and forth from current posts, posts that I have responded to, posts that I have authored. When looking at Content>All, I am not having any difficulty seeing what the current posts are, and if I want to see if a post I have been involved with is updated, it is a quick click to the Participated link to see which of those posts have been updated recently, and which I have already responded to after they have been updated.
I would like to see some enhancements and changes made, and I think that the valid issues that people are having need to be addressed. But I would like to see more tips like the ones deggie has provided coming from all of us. The whining and complaining is just boring....
    Just my 2 cents....

  • HT1364 Can I use this procedure to consolidate my iTunes media folder along with my wife's, both in a new, common location?

Previously we have both kept our music folders independent. I now want to use the procedure described in HT1364 to move both of our music folders into a single, common location. The idea is to use the same media folder but still keep each of our iTunes users separate so that each can maintain its own playlists, etc.
We share the same home PC but each of us has its own user and as such, each of us have a separate iTunes.  This way we can each keep sync'ing music to each of our separate iDevices but share the same source music folders.
FWIW, we both use the same appleID for purchases, but each of us have individual AppleIDs for iCloud syncing. We mostly have differents songs, but I estimate that we have about 10% duplicate songs/albums, both form iTunes purchases and uploads from CD's.
The procedure above describes how to change the location of your music files. Using this procedure I will move my media files to the new, common location. I wil then switch to my wife's iTunes user and will repeat the process.  While doing my wifes procedure I'm wondering what will happen when it detects the duplicates... will it just ignore them? ask me if I want to replace the song file, or just crash and mess up either or both of our libraries?
I assume that this is the proper way to set up a family Apple ecosystem.  This way when a new member of the family begins collecting music he/she can join the "family music library" and sync only the songs she wants and so on.
I will welcome your comments and implications of doing procedure above. And also, your comments on the proper way to configure a family ecosystem, if this is not the proper way to do it.
Merry Christmas to all of you.

  • Examples of scenes rendered by the new LV 3D picture control (2)

According to NI News august 6, 2004, there is a new :
    8. Download LabVIEW 3D Picture Control Evaluation Software With the new LabVIEW 3D Picture Control evaluation software for LabVIEW 7.1, you can model and render basic 3D scenes for advanced visualization in LabVIEW. Download the software at:

I've downloaded it for evaluation, but couldn't install since I run LV 7.0 Express, so I stated the previous request for some samples of scenes
    Any help would be appreciated

Unfortunately the dedicated topic for the 3D Picture Control tools was lost in the transition. The old forums had the concept of a "topic", which was different from a typical question or other thread, and they were not migrated.
One of most useful parts of that thread was a link to the download page for the tools, which I will post here.
LabVIEW 3D Picture Control Evaluation Software
Additionally, I have created a new dedicated forum post for these items. The new dedicated forum for these 3D tools is here.

  • What are the most common questions in the forums?

I have my own ideas about what are the questions we see asked over and over and over again in here. Everyone post your ideas here so we can compile a FAQ and maybe post it somewhere (Virum, your new site? :) )

Please do my homework/coursework/think for me
This has to be by far the most common type of question asked on the forums.
    Classpath questions
    HashCode questions
Pointer vs Reference Debate (totally spurious but people spew 100's of pages arguing about something that is perfectly obvious)
A very good Thread that is probably 1000's of entries long by now is the
"How to get your questions answered promptly" one (or however this is called). A recap of that published somewhere would be of tremendous value, especially if it was presented as a page you had to go through before landing in the forums to post your latest "Java Challenge" aka "do my coursework" on the boards.

It's just you. Remember, there are lots of people who purchase the MacBook Air that are using it without issue. These forums are like a hospital emergency room - the people you see here are the ones that need help. The rest are all out there enjoying their MBAs. Very few people come here to post that everything is working perfectly.

  • Trying to install SL on a new hard-drive for my iMac, when asked which disk to install on it gave me no options, i followed advice from another forum and created a partition, now can't boot from the new drive at all. Help?

I've had **** with my iMac, the hard-drive failed so i replaced it with a new 1TB Samsung drive. Then when i tried to install SL from the install disk, all went to plan until it asked me which drive i wanted to install it on, where it came up with a box where my options should have been, but instead it didn't give me any options to install it on any drive i.e. it asked which drive i wanted to install it on but no drives came up to select.
So i followed the advice from another forum, look at the 'Extended Hard-drive preparation' response
    ( https://discussions.apple.com/message/10576009#10576009 )
After following these instructions i have now got a new partition, but when i restarted my computer to install SL on the drive, the option to boot from the drive is now not available, now i must boot from the install disk, whereas before i was able to boot from either the install disk or the hard drive. The hard drive is still visible in disk utility as it always has been, but i am now unable to boot from it, let alone install SL.
Please help my iMac has been broken for months and i've been trying to fix it for so long and am getting problem after problem. Thank you!

    Hi db2
That off the shelf MS-DOS / FAT-32 drive needs to re-partitioned GUID Partition Table / Mac OS Extended (Journaled) before you can install OS X and Startup your Intel iMac from it.
    1. Boot from your original install or retail SL DVD and open Disk Utility.
    2. Highlight the new HD in the list of drives and select the Partition tab.
    3. Under Volume Scheme select 1 Partition and click on the Options... button.
    4. Select GUID Partition Table in the drop down window and click OK.
    5. Set the Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Apply button.
    6. Once thats done, then you can do a clean SL Install, Restore from TM , your old HD or  Bootable Clone.

  • RFC: Introduce new 'Article/Tutorial (Comment) Threads' in the Web Dynpro Forum

Some time ago I've suggested on SCN Support is both forum moderator and most active articles wrtiter
    Valery Silaev
    SaM Solutions
    http://www.sam-solutions.net
Message was edited by: Bertram Ganz
This thread was branched from forum thread: How to print the data of a Model node.

    Hi Valery,
thanks for this great idea. Indeed, there is no channel set up to communicate feedback/suggestions/questions to Web Dynpro tutorials or articles in a standardized way.
WebLogs can be commented on the WebLog page itself and they are announced in a special ;\ New Web Dynpro Weblogs which can be opened via the <a href="https://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/library/uuid/49f2ea90-0201-0010-ce8e-de18b94aee2d">Web Dynpro Feature2Sample Matrix</a>. Actually the section 'Further Information' lists all related articles, WebLogs etc. These links are regularly updated so that the Sample Description Pages helps to keep all links to valuable information in a central place.
The 'Sample Description Page' should additionally comprise a section <b>'Discussion'</b> with a link to the above 'Article Comment Thread' in the Web Dynpro forum. The reader downloads the material from the sample description page and also finds a link to the related 'Article Comment Thread' there.
For all new articles (which are combined with a related 'Article Comment Thread') the <i>Further Information</i> links could point to the 'Article Comment Thread' (which then itself links to the article) but not directly to the article resource. The reader can then also have look at the existing comments to the related resource. As an alternative the article PDF itself should have a permanent link to the 'Article Comment Thread' in the Web Dynpro Forum.
Please post your comments on this idea.
    Regards, Bertram
