The Superdrive on my MacBook Pro ejects audio CDs just a few seconds after inserting them. This happens both with original audio CDs I have bought in music stores AND with audio CDs I have recorded myself, on the very same computer, via iTunes. The same does NOT happen with data CDs (e.g., stuff in mp3 format), which are read just fine. This behaviour started a couple of weeks ago, until then everything had worked just fine for years. I am running iTunes 11.1 under Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Any idea?

  • Captivate 6 - start audio a few seconds after the recording

    Hi,
I have created a software demo video with multiple video recordings in the one project.  I now want to add audio. Ideally I would add one audio file to the background, so it plays over multiple recordings, but I need it to start a few seconds into the project.  The add silence feature doesn't work, even if I start the silence from one second in instead of the very beginning of the project/clip.
Is there any way I can edit when the audio starts in a project?
Any ideas would be much appreciated!
    Thank you
    Victoria

It sounds a little like you might benefit from getting some training in how to use audio in Captivate.  For some reason I'm not able to get the message across.
    It works like this:
Slide Audio - Captivate DOES allow you to add audio at a specific point in the slide.  You just add an audio clip to a single slide either by recording it personally, or by importing audio files from elsewhere, so that you can synch with objects (e.g. highligh boxes, captions, animations) that might be appearing or disappearing on the timeline.  Move the audio to where ever on the slide you want it to be.
Slides Audio (note the extra 's' in the name) - If you have an audio clip that needs to be played over several slides, Captivate allows you to do this via Audio > Record to > Slides.  Specify the slide range and then use the Import option to pull in the audio file (if you are not recording yourself).  Drag the markers around to synch the slide start points.
Background Audio - Only add audio to the background for sound that you want to be playing regardless of what is happening on any slide or whether or not the user pauses the playback at some point.  Background audio is meant to be omnipresent.  You don't have the option of specifying when it starts, however, you can set it to loop or stop when the clip finishes playing.
If you're talking about Background Audio, then NO you cannot drag it left or right on the timeline.  If you're talking about Slide Audio, then YES you can drag it left or right on the layer to change the start and end points.
Object-level Audio - This is audio added to objects on the timeline.
If you want to add silence to the beginning and end of the clip, you just need to use the suggestion I made earlier. File a bug or enhancement request if you don't like Captivate's standard behaviour of clipping off pure silence.  That's the way it's designed to work and Adobe may not class it as a bug.
If your slide happens to be a video slide, then you will need to modify either the video or the audio if you want perfect synchronisation.
Captivate may not match GarageBand or Audition for audio editing power, but it certainly has the basic required functions available in the Slide/s Audio dialog to allow synchronisation of audio with screens.  You can cut and paste audio from different areas of the same clip, import other clips to insert into the audio track, modify volume, normalise, change dynamics, etc.  Not enough power to make a hit record or movie soundtrack, but quite adequate for most e-learning developers.  If you want more powerful audio editing options including multiple audio tracks playing at the same time (not including the background audio) you can either create the multi-track recording in an audio editing package, or you could use object-level audio where objects placed on the timeline play audio clips as required.
Now if you will excuse me, I have to get back to work...I think I've given enough free time on this topic.

  • For the past week my Macbook pro downloading GB of unknown data  - is anyone else having this problem?

At first i thought someone had hacked my router - so i accessed my router set up and changed the password - when i checked by DHCP list howerev the only computers showing were all the ones actually used by myself and my housemates.
when i looked at the router history it showed in the past 24 hours my macbook pro had downloaded 7GB of data throughout the day and night all i had been using my Macbook for at the timewas writing word docs and checking some pdfs and occasional browsing with safari.
Nothing that would consume anything like 7GB of data.
the next day same issue - this time consumed something like 6 GB of badnwidth...
I look on my MacBook downloads and see no reference to what it is supposedly downloading.
I have run Mackeeper and Virus Barrier and no malware or virused were found.
I unchecked the option for automatically checking for updates... Still the problem is occuring...
Am quite new to mac so not sure what else to do...
    Any help?

    Look at this comprehensive trouble shooting document;
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3353
I suggest that you start with SMC and PRAM resets.
    Then  a Safe Boot.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook Pro - unconscious for a few seconds every few seconds...

    Hei!
Today my Wacom tablet - an ebay buy - came in, andhappy as I was I downloaded and installed the latest wacom drivers immeadiately... It went fine, but after a while, it started lagging a bit. Well, I thought, must be the Rosetta-running software, let's just restart, couldn't harm. OK, restarted - lagging was worse... well - let's restart again, while having the tablet unplugged. I did it - and now it's even worse, the computer's nearly unusable now, unconscious for 5 seconds, here for three, unconscious for ten, here for 4, on and on.. I do have repaired Disk Permissions after the first restart, and even checked the disk - nothing wrong it says. The driver's universal.
Does anyone know what to do? I'd really like to use this tablet, and I totally love my MBP...
    hmm...
    Jojo
edit - still have 20 gig free HD space and at the moment about a gig free Ram.
edit2 - activity monitor doesn't report high processor usage, but still CoreDuoTemp/Speedit say its 71°c hot - and still getting up. it reports running at 1.5 GHz at the moment.
I DO have lifted it a bit from the table to let it 'breathe'!

Can you say what startup items you deleted?
I'm having problems with my MBP intermittently hanging, much like you describe, though thankfully not as often. I've removed miscellaneous things, like the known-to-be-problematic MagicMenuEnabler from StuffIt and an old Wacom driver, and I think things are better, but still not good. I'm seeing extremely long delays doing various things on the system and even just in the middle of typing, such as (a few actual measurements):
    Time to open:
System Preferences 35 sec (other times < 2 sec)
Eudora 45 sec (other times < 4 sec)
Safari (and show Google) 25 sec
    Time for actions:
Click Applications in Finder sidebar 22 sec (until apps show and spinner stops)
Press and hold command-tab 7-14 sec (until tab-dock appears)
New message in Eudora 4 sec (other times instantaneous)
Save message in Eudora 3 sec (other times instantaneous)
Close a window in Eudora 2 sec
Pauses mid-typing in Eudora 4 sec
Reply to message in Eudora 5 sec
Switch windows in Eudora 4 sec
After cleaning out everything I could find, I still see the following error messages in the console.log, which I'd like to find an explanation for, but I don't think they can be the sole cause of these intermittent hangs, because the hangs are much more frequent than these log entries:

Note the regularity... Roughly 8 minutes after the hour and 15 minutes after the hours, with rare exceptions. Worrisome, but, like I said, my intermittent hangs are much more frequent than this.

Turn on macbook pro then went to pages then screen went black with botton light still flashing
need to hold power button for light to go offf

Mine did the same thing yesterday.

  • MacBook Pro (2010) hanging for 30 seconds after sleep

I have a 13" MacBook Pro (2010), which I've owned since June. When I got it, I installed the 640GB Samsung HDD that I had in my previous 15" MacBook Pro (I also reinstalled OS X on the drive and restored my data from a backup)
The problem is that when I open the lid and wake it from sleep, the display turns on and shows the desktop, but the computer is unresponsive for about 30 seconds. That is, the mouse cursor isn't there and no keyboard inputs are recognised. After 30 seconds or so, the mouse cursor appears and it's back to normal again.
I've tried making a new user account and the problem remains with that, and I've also installed 10.6 again and restored my data, and I still have the problem.
Could it be anything to do with the 640GB HDD, even though it worked absolutely fine with my 15" MBP? Or is there anything else I can try?
    Many thanks!

You can try resetting and PRAM

I would not suspect this will help, but easy enough to do, and with any luck...
What about a Safe Boot, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
does the problem persist? Then Reboot?

So in the last few days I’ve noticed that pressing my volume change keys actually isn’t changing the volume on my macbook pro at all. When I press the volume up or down keys, it makes the recognisable pop sound but stays at the same volume while the squares go up or down. I mute it but my computer still makes sound. It’s the same with the volume control up the top of the screen, too. I slide it up and down and it doesn’t change the volume at all. The only way I can change the volume is with my speakers or the program I’m in (iTunes, VLC etc). I restarted and it seems to be okay then I go to change it a couple minutes later and it’s back to not working again.
I’ve checked my settings- the “use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard fuction keys” is not switched on, and I have tried a suggestion of moving the com.apple.systempreferences.plist file out of the library and onto the desktop and restarting and neither of those seem to make any difference whatsoever. I’ve tried to find online forums but the only suggestions I found were those two and they didn’t work.
I’m just annoyed because I usually have the worst luck with technology but my macbook had been going strong and I got it because of the apparent lack of things that could go wrong, but of course even if there is one thing that could go wrong it will happen to me.
    Please help!

    No and Yes
Don't use TM for this purpose, clone your drive to an external, plug the external into another MBP and reboot from it. Please note that booting a machine that came with Lion may not be possible from a drive with Snow Leopard.

    See my Mac Malware Guide.
This issue is more complex than some of the responses you have gotten are indicating. You definitely should avoid Norton, but there actually IS malware out there, and all anti-virus software is NOT "snake oil." Don't listen to anyone who tells you otherwise, as they don't know what they're talking about.
Although you should be able to do without anti-virus software just fine, there are some perfectly good reasons to install it and some good anti-virus apps to use if you decide to do so. Further, even if you do avoid anti-virus software, you need to understand what the threats are so you don't end up thinking you're totally safe and do something you shouldn't.
