The volume for "*.jpg" cannot be found. External harddrive.

I have recently purchased a MacBook Air and have moved my iPhoto library to an external harddrive. Recently, my all of my older photos and videos when clicked on come with the error "The volume for "*.jpg" cannot be found." However, my new imported photos do not have this problem. When I click "Find Photo" and select that photo on my harddrive, it still gives me the same error.
I have many photo albums and would rather not import them all again just to re-organize them. Do I have any other alternatives?

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A +Managed library+, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing
A +Referenced Library+ is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

The volume for "network" cannot be found

Hey guys,
I have a small probelm.
I have a g5 quadcore, with 2 network ports.
On ethernet port 2 i usea connection to a switch for my internet, which i share with others.
On port 1 i just installed a newtork hard drive, to use with time machine when i go to leopard.
Now, when the hd is connected, and i try to browse my network, by going to finder, and then the network icon, i get an error saying "the volume for "network" cannot be found"
Eventhough I have this error, Everything works fine.
So my internet from port 2 works fine, and my maxtor utility for the external network drive can find the hd, indicating that the external hd also works fine, on port 1.
So, my question is, how do i get rid of the error massage, in order to be able to browse my networks again, and also to find me new external hd, using the finder.
I hope someone can help out.

It wont mess up any of my progs or whatever? Im dependant on this mac for my work, since it runs in a studio with protools and logic etc...
so i just want to be sure b4 i do this, that it wont mess with anything....
And actually, for some more info, somewhere in the beginning of the threat, you said i should rearrange my network ports, with in my case, connection 2 on top. (since it has the internet)
I tried doing this, but when i do this, connection 1 becomes inactive or something, at least i cannot find my hard disk anymore, which is connected to ethernet port 1.
I guess im thinking that it wont auto mount, because it doesnt run from the same ethernet connector as my internet etc. could that have something to do with it?

"The volume for Movies cannot be found" error message!

Hi,
For no reason that I can work out, when I go to view movies I have in my movie folder, I get the message;
"The document xxnamexx could not be opened because it is in the trash. To use this item, drag it out of the trash first"
Trouble is they are not in the trash at all. I get the same message for all movie in the folder. After poking around a bit, I am now getting the message;
"The volume for Movies cannot be found" and I cant access my movie folder...eek!
Any advice?
I have restarted and repaired permissions to no avail.

The volume for "documents" cannot be found.

i restarted my laptop today after getting the newest security update and found that every icon on my screen is gone except the "Macintosh HD" icon. i opened up the HD icon and tried to click on the Documents folder on the left, but the message "the volume for 'documents' cannot be found" pops up.
then i tried to restart the computer in safe mode, and repair disk with disk repair utility on the installation disk, but nothing worked...!
i'm more of a windows user than a mac user, so it's safe to say i am now clueless as to what to do next...
midterms are coming up and i need my notes in Documents to study....
pleassseee help me if u can!!!

It sounds like you're saying that everything appears to be working normally, but you can't find of your files? If so, I'd start by doing a search for files you know should exist (using Spotlight, the Search window, or a Smart Folder--command-option N). It's possible that somehow things simply got accidentally moved into places they shouldn't be. If that's the case, you might just need to find them and move them back where they they should be.

The volume for movies cannot be found

Until recently, I had no problems opening the "Movies" volume, but all of a sudden it has disappeared - I get the message "The volume for movies cannot be found". I had only recently "tidied" up this computer ready to pass on to my daughter and so I cannot recall whether I still had any projects stored in this volume. I ran all the disc checks and repairs, and then installed the new Leopard OS, hoping that that would solve the problem. It hasn't. I am wondering if there is a way to solve this problem other than wiping the hard drive and reinstalling from scratch? Any advice would be much appreciated. Many thanks. - Merrilly

Thank you for your suggestion. I had tried searching for the volume before, but with no luck. However, your suggestion led me to solving the problem. I went to my "home" and created a new folder which I called "Movies". Miraculously, the special "Movies" icon appeared. Then I just dragged it into the Finder sidebar, and all is now back to "normal" - when I click on the icon in the sidebar, it opens the newly created movies folder. (I suspect that I must have inadvertently deleted the original folder (and then emptied the recycle bin).)
I thought I was going to have to reinstall the OS.....and the solution was so simple!

The volume for documents cannot be found message

Similar threads didn't quite yield the results I was hoping for, so I thought I would give this a shot. I am getting a "the volume for documents cannot be found" message when I click on my Documents folder in the lefthand column of a Finder window. I do not have the same problem with movies or music. However, when I click on the Documents folder in my Home menu, my documents are all there. Searches reveal that they are there as well. The only change I made to my computer prior to this computer was turning on FileVault. I have turned it off, but this has not resolved the issue. Neither has simply dragging the folder on the right to the icon on the left. I'm glad that my documents aren't gone, but can anyone advise as to how I can make my computer recognize this?

Hi Erin, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Do you mean the Documents in the Sidbar of the Finder Window?
If that is the case, then drag the one that doesn't work, off to the left of the Sidebar, it'll go poof, then locate your Document folder and drag that to the Sidebar, but not on top of another icon there, as that'll move it to that location... Perhaps this is how it got lost in the first place?

IPhoto -- The volume for "IMG " cannot be found -- error message.....HELP!

I have my new MacBook open and all booted up -- love it! Have my new Canon EOS 5D camera connected and ready to transfer photos -- love it! Trying to get iPhoto to accept a download of photos without giving me the following error: The volume for "IMG" cannot be found -- hate it! Help please! I have checked that the copy to iPhoto is turned on in my preferences and it is.......

What happened when i now click a photo in a particular album i get the message "the volume for img_4006 cannot be found" what do i do

when i click on a photo in a particular album---i get the message "the volume for img_4006.jpg cannot be found. it used to open just fine. all other photos in different albums open up. what happened and i can i fix this?

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

In iphoto I get the mesage "The volume for [picture] cannot be found" What does this mean? I can see the pictures

iphoto message is "The volume for this photo cannot be found." I can see the pictures but cannot move them?

The "volume" is referring to the picture's location, i.e. hard drive, etc. In any case there is an iPhoto forum where those experts are. Post there.

"The volume for 'Applications' cannot be found."

Install yesterday, plus reinstall. Still get this message when I click on Applications in the "Places" list. The applications exist in my username file and I created an Alias to put on top level, but cannot remove the empty Applications folder in this same place. It is no emergency but would like to throw away the empty Applications folder and also "locate" this as the volume for Applications. Thanks for any help.

There are different layers of the OS (system, local, user, etc) that have similar folder structures. The /Applications folder in the root directory (not on a volume) is at the local level and contains applications that all users have access to. The ~/Applications folder in a user's directory contain applications that only that user can access.
The main /Applications folder has never been an alias of a user folder, especially since only that user can access the original folder (ACLs provide more access, but the default behavior is that only that user can access items in their user folder). If a folder named "Applications" exists on another volume, then that volume will need to be mounted to get access (assuming permissions allow it).

The volume for "Movies" cannot be found. (Finder fix SOLUTION)

Here is a simple solution I posted in another thread ("Erased Movies Volume?"). The original poster and I were unable to access our Movies via the "PLACES" menu in the Finder window because we received an error message that said it could not be found.
Here is a re-post of the solution I used that worked for me:
I figured this out and it's very simple. It doesn't involve deleting anything. Someone posted earlier (Kiraly, I think that was you) that this is not a volume issue, but a folder issue...turns out that person is correct, even though the error message insists it's a volume that cannot be found. Here's what I did to fix this and it is ridiculously simple:
1) Open your Finder window.
2) Under the PLACES menu on the left side of your Finder window select your home icon.
3) Seven standard folder icons should appear in the pane to the right: Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Library, Movies, Music, Pictures. In my case, I discovered there was no Movies folder.
4) With your home icon still highlighted, go to the File menu and select "New Folder" from the drop-down menu.
5) When you see the new folder appear in the right-hand pane, name the folder Movies (or whatever OS X claims "cannot be found").
Normally when you create a new folder it is a blank, generic-looking folder, but in this case, my folder automatically received the Movies icon in the center of it. Now, when I select Movies in "PLACES" in the Finder window, it no longer says, "volume cannot be found." I dragged my videos (that aren't being used in iTunes) over to Movies and all's good again.

IPhoto 7: "Volume for DSC_0001 cannot be found"

I get this message whether I am importing from a Compact Flash card, hard drive, or CD. I am using iPhoto 7.0.2. I can import cleanly from a SD card that I have, but I shoot most of my pictures on my Nikon D70 which uses CF. Is there a fix for this? It is very annoying.You have to click endlessly on "cancel" and then iPhoto imports the picture and goes to the next photo and announces that it can't find the volume. It is very tedious when you are trying to import a 1 or 2 GB card or even a CD, which can hold up to 400 photos.
I am using a new MacBook.

Have you recently reformatted the card with the camera? It's best to let the camera remove old photos and not iPhoto. Try reformatting the card with the camera and see what happens on the next import.
Have you considered a card reader? It saves wear and tear on the camera's ports and avoids a possible shutdown during import due to a low battery which can really mess up things. Also, uploading to a folder on the desktop and them importing the folder will let you import all the photos into one event instead of spitting into events based on date as long as you have the Events preferences set like this.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

The volume for "IMG_2333.JPG" cannot be found.

I imported a lot of photos from different CDs (all from different digital cameras) into iPhoto 09. When I try to place them into the softcover book template, I get recurring error messages that say 'The volume for “IMG_2333.JPG” (or whatever the image is called) cannot be found. Insert the disk or connect to the server volume and wait for it to appear on the desktop, then try again.' is there a solution rather than constantly reinserting the CDs?

That's the problem. When it is UN-checked, the iPhoto simply stores the location where the photo came from and accesses it from there. In your specific case, it wants to access them directly off the CDs.
Delete them from your library, turn that check box ON, then reimport those CDs to your library.

"The volume for DSC_0001.jpg cannot be found"?

I'm a bit of a novice with macs but a new problem has occurred while importing photos from my Nikon D70s to iphoto. With the majority of images, it comes up with the caution "The volume for DSC_0001.jpg cannot be found" or whichever DSC image. If I press 'cancel' it imports the photo and I can view and edit it. If I press 'OK' or 'find photo' nothing useful seems to happen.
I have tried updating iphoto but I again get an alert saying "An eligible iPhoto application was not found in the location /Applications."
Any help with both these problems would be greatly appreciated.

This sometimes occurs if you’re importing a file into iPhoto and there’s already a file there with the same name. Digital cameras can produce many, many files with the same name over their lifetime, so it’s not uncommon to have several files called IMG_00543.JPG, for instance. Now you want to import one also called this.
What happens is that iPhoto compares the two files to check for duplicates. However, if iPhoto cannot find the file already in the database for comparison, then you get this message. It suggests that your database is damaged because iPhoto has lost track of this (or these) similarly named files.
A simple test is to rename the file you are importing - just add a character - IMG_00543a.JPG for instance. If this then imports with no issue then you might consider rebuilding your library:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Error message "The Volume for "IMG_5727.JPG Cannot be found.

I have been recieving the error:
"The Volume for "IMG_5727.JPG Cannot be found.
Insert the disk or connect to the server volume and
wait for it to appear on the desktop, then try again."
It has been happening for months but I am editing/moving
wedding pictures(900 plus) right now and it is impossible to work around this. They are new images that were just down loaded from the card reader.
I can see the pictures right in the library

You say you are "editing/moving" pictures from a wedding.
Depending on what you mean by that, it could be creating the problem you're having.
Are you physically "moving" your pictures within the finder, or do you just mean dragging and dropping within iPhoto?
Usually, the way iPhoto works is you upload them into iPhoto from a card or some sort of volume.
A new file is created in the iPhoto library.
That file never leaves the library as it is now the actual link to iPhoto.
However, if you physically move that file from the library, you will break the link and have lots of problems.
You can't move files from the iPhoto library.
However, if you're not physically moving photos from the library (manually, via the finder), and if you are uploading into iPhoto, and iPhoto shows you a thumbnail and when you click on it, it gives you that message, then there might be something wrong with the volume iPhoto thinks it's uploading pictures to from your card/source volume.
I would reestablish a new volume to save to and see if it's still having the same problems. Make sure you backup the original library though.
