This iPod cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started.

When I plug into my computer and try to sync with iTunes, I get this message. "This iPod cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started." I can not find away to start the Apple Mobile Device service. I synced last on 2/4/12 with no problem. How do I start this service so I can sync my iPod?

It should also be noted that for my iPhone it does not allow for the new update software to be uploaded; it just says that an error has occurred, nothing more.
