Thunderbird profile is only partially recognized

I have Thunderbird+Lightning in use on both Linux Mint and Debian operating systems. The Mint installation of Thunderbird was not used for around six months after I switched to Debian as the primary OS. The Debian installation ran into problems (unrelated to Thunderbird), and I had to move back to Mint. However, I have been unable to properly migrate the profile.
Thunderbird shows the add-ins and the basic page layout preferences, so the profile is recognized. However, the user data (email accounts (and their mail), the address books, and the calendar data), are all missing. When Thunderbird is opened, it starts off asking me to create an email account.
The version on Debian is 24.3.0. I believe Thunderbird has been updated one or more times on Mint during the period of inactivity. Its version is currently 31.3.0. FYI, all of the add-ins were originally on the Mint version prior to updating to V31.3.0.
I made numerous attempts, following the standard instructions, of replacing the profile contents with the old contents (I have used the procedure successfully to migrate from Windows to Mint to Debian). These attempts included using both the existing old profile and an earlier backup copy. I even uninstalled Thunderbird, deleted the .thunderbird directory, and started over (several times), re-installing from the Mint repo.
I didn't think to verify that the Mint profile still worked before trying the replacement. However, after the failure, I reloaded the old Mint profile and it doesn't work either. Since Thunderbird was totally reinstalled, there is not likely a problem of software corruption, and since several previously-working profiles failed, it seems unlikely that all of the profiles are bad. It almost looks like incompatibility between Thunderbird V31.3.0 and earlier version profiles, but I haven't seen any reports of this .

I have attached a screenshot of the error console. At least the first entry appears to relate just to a problem with the themes, not with content. Also, based on other information online, I found that panacea.dat contained references to the old profile name. Taking that file out of service did not solve the problem.

I'll close the loop on this question after discovering my own answer. The reason the user data wasn't recognized is that it wasn't there.
I was using a backup procedure that archived the home directory, which includes the profile. To ensure that none of the files were in use, I ran Ark from another operating system. It appears to have backed up everything but the handful of files that contained the actual user data (email accounts, messages, and calendar data). Without burrowing into the profile, it wasn't apparent that those files were missing. I haven't figured out why those files were treated differently.
The lesson to take away is that this is not a good way to backup the profile, and it pays to verify that your critical files actual make it into the backup.

    Since upgrading to OS X 10.5, mail.app intermittently doesn't fully recognize attachments. The mail.app *Message Viewer* window correctly lists the email subject and the no. of attachments. But viewing the message shows no attachment, nor is there any 'save attachment' button.
    However View -> Message ->*Raw Source* will show the attachment, albeit encoded as base64
    My workaround for now is to highlight the message in the Message Viewer window and then select File -> *Save Attachments...* But it's highly inconvenient. Right-mousing on the message in the Message Viewer window does not offer the "Save Attachments..." menu item.
    I've experienced the problem with someone sending me an attached PDF, and also regularly from Outlook/Exchange people sending me meeting invitations with attached .ics files. They all show up as a message with 1 item attached in the Message Viewer window, but there's no attachment when the message is viewed, unless I select View->Message->Raw Source

    Exact same thing here. This solution does work. But why doesn't attachment won't just show up when you view the message as Plain Text, which is, and always has been, my default. This has always worked in previous versions of Mail.

    You spoke to my first item - "digits".
    But my BIG problem is the second one. -- "Moving a profile".
    I cannot understand the instructions. (*)
    The reason, is that it tries to cover TWO CASES/SITUATIONS , jumbled into ONE instruction set.
    My request to Mozilla, is to split those instructions into TWO (or more) distinct and separate instruction sets, but with each set dealing ONLY with one case.
    Write one set for "Moving a profile".
    Write one set for "Restoring to a different location".
    This way, the user does not have to try to interpret the "if"-descriptors, while in the middle of trying to accomplish the task at hand.
    Doing as I ask, makes for more words, and a longer page. But there is no cost for length of a page, and a great advantage to the user, since the steps to be followed for each case are distinct and are not ambiguous. Do not have any "If-this" detours in the sequence of operations.
    (*) PS: I am not dumb on programming. I have been writing code since 1966, and have taught programming in several other nations.
    (**) PPS: I still have not been able to move ("replicate") my old profile and message files, from the external backup copy, into the new, clean machine, so that I may continue corresponding from where I left off, when the motherboard crashed.

  • Trouble migrating Mozilla Thunderbird profile from Windows to Mac

    I am a Mac newbie. I'm trying to get my email and browser bookmarks over to my Mac.
    I've managed to get my previous Thunderbird directory over to the Mac and put it under the Administrator's Library directory (I tried it under Application support as well). Then I installed T-bird. But it just created a new profile. It didn't recognize the old one.
    How do I fix this?
    And I don't see a way to export my bookmarks from Firefox to get them over. Any tips?

    OSX would not let me copy all of the profile directory.

    I got so frustrated, I decided to just burn a DVD and see if this worked any better.
    Well yes and no.
    I easily copied the Thunderbird profile into place. But then all files and subdirectories were read-only, so I had to dig out a unix book and figure out how to recursively change permissions (chmod -R u+w). I also had struggles with figuring out how to create a thunderbird profile and then substitute my old one for it.
    NOW I have a new problem still bugging me which I will start a separate post for. (In short, I installed thunderbird but I'm not sure it's really installed because the disk image keeps reappearing even after I eject it. Thunderbird comes up, but it seems like it's reinstalling it or something.)
    With regard to this POST I still would like to get an answer to how to properly use a network share since I had to completely workaround it. I know I'll need this again soon.

    I was thinking that some of the songs in your library may have been purchased under a different apple id. You have already done the first thing I would have done by de authorizing and re authorizing. To verify this, highlight one of the songs that will not sync over and use File>Get Info.     In the Summary section there will be an Apple ID entry. If it shows something different than what you are currently using then I recommend signing into the Apple ID it shows and authorizing the computer for that one as well.

    Now that I think aboput it further, You may have an Accessibilty feature turned on.
    - Try triple clicking the Home button to see if that will allow access to the iPod so you can go to Settings>General>Restrictions to turn off all the Accessibilty features.
    - If not then connect the iPod to your computer and turn off the features. See:

    My Windows 7 Ultimate computer received an unauthorized Windows overnight update followed by error messages. Bless Microsoft. To compound the problem there were NO restore dates found and no recent backups. I lost about the last entire year of data including all my many downloads and recent documents, etc.
    Like another user, I also had more than a year of Thunderbird emails in my inbox and many other folders. Important to me. Now TBird won't open...at all... and gives me an error message: "Your Thunderbird profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible." OK. So I uninstalled it and REINSTALLED IT, more than once, and still get this same error message after a supposedly successful installation. The error message and then TBird fails to open. Shouldn't it create a new profile with the new install?

    No. It's looking for, and finding, profiles.ini but can't find the profile in the location stored in profiles.ini.
    Deleting (or moving or renaming) profiles.ini should indeed force it to generate a new profile.

    Because of a virus, I redownloaded Thunderbird 24.4.0 and it completed until trying to open Thunderbird when I get the message "Your Thunderbird profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible." I know the profile exists in a "recovered files" folder. I've tried to move it to the current Thunderbird folder but get the same message.     Hi this did not work either.
    Also when I tried to log into this forum the browser just kept taking back to the login page. There were no errors, it was as if it was stuck in a loop. The page refreshed but moved no where. My user name and password were there but nothing happened. It took a reboot to allow access.
    This seems to be something I have noticed. When a page reopens on start up or from a link it will not load the page properly causing errors.
    Also on a similar note the new Firefox is not remembering passwords. Specifically to hotmail.

    Apple used to strive for smarter solutions but that has changed.
    After "upgrading" to Mavericks you can no longer sync device to device with USB or WiFi.
    This is so stupid! First, when you travel there are long periods of no WiFi or 3G/4G. Second, cloud-based services are still pretty worthless because it's slow. Third, cloud-based services are still pretty worthless because of low security. Fourth, cloud-based services are still pretty worthless because of low capacity (I have a calendar from my first Newton of 1996 and iCloud can't handle the amount of data).
    Why would you prohibit safe and fast syncing via USB??? It's just plain stupid!
    Do NOT upgrade to Mavericks if you want to keep your safe and fast sync for Calendars and Contacts.

  • My unusual (?) printer issue -- Prints only partial lines when printing in black (part 2)

    I have been using my HP Officejet J4680 with my Win7 PC for several years and relatively problem-free -- until about six months ago.  
    My printing issue might be rather odd.  So odd, in fact, I’m not sure how to succinctly describe it.  I’m not too techie, but I will try….
    This printer will print some lines correctly, other lines print only partially, and some lines don’t print at all.
    This oddity happens ONLY when I print in black.  When changing the color of the text to any other color other than black the page does print correctly.
    Further, this issue seems to occur ONLY when printing certain things/files/formats.  For example, material from most websites will print correctly.  As will most .PDF files.  Printing files such as .txt, .doc, .wps, etc., seem to be the most problematic.
    Fixes I have tried include:
    Uninstalled and reinstalled printer
    Run HP’s diagnostic tools (including checking for any driver updates)
    Installed several new black ink cartridges
    Cleaned and re-aligned printer head
    Lastly, the “copy” feature continues to produce good results.  These problematic symptoms seem to occur only while using the “print” function.
    Short of relegating this printer to the trash, I’ve tried everything I can think of.  Help/ideas/suggestions appreciated.

  • Picture files only partially display after being published

    Recently .jpg and .png pictures I have created only partially display after being published.  I've tested it using Paint, Publisher and Gimp with mixed results. The pictures display correctly when I view them locally on my pc.

    The only pictures that fully display are those that were taken from a camera, but after I resized one in paint, it also didn't display properly. My question really is, is this an issue with Microsoft Expression Web or with the server hosting the files?

    Publisher is NOT a photo editing program. Neither is Word. Nor is Paint.
    You need a real, and simple, photo editing program. Paint.NET is a good, free one. I find GIMP cumbersome (but it's batch processing is handy). And your graphics aren't being created and saved properly. For example, the events.html page has graphics on it
    that total well over 3 MegaBytes! Pity the poor soul with a wireless connection. The graphics on the events.html page are largely illegible, and as such serve no real purpose (and make the site look bad).
    Let's take an example...on the home page gallery is a graphic for the 2015 Chamber Scholarship. It's displayed at 525 x 340 pixels, yet the image sitting on the server (and which must be downloaded by the visitor) is 1275 x 825 pixels. So you have an unnecessarily
    large graphic taking space on the server, having to download to the visitor's computer at full size, and then be shrunk by the browser to only 17% of the original area. That file should be created and saved in a proper graphics program at the final size you
    plan to use (and in this case, use PNG format). The larger file takes at least 5 times the storage space on the server as a properly sized file (and takes 5 times as long to download and upload).
    I've superimposed the display size on top of the full size and shrunk them down to display here in the forum. See below.
    All the graphics that I have checked on your site have the same problem, and if your site has been up a long time and you haven't cleaned out the old files on the server, you may have run out of server space, which would corrupt the new files.
    Smaller files will also upload faster and more reliably. Plus--browsers stink at resizing graphics. Do that in a proper graphics program to get the best quality.
    Use JPG for photos, GIF for hard-edge graphics with few colors and no gradations/shading, and PGN for hard-edge graphics with full color and gradations/shading. And make sure you are saving the images in the proper version of the format (RGB for web).
