Thunderbolt to Ethernet problem

I have a new MBP with retina. Whenever I plug in the thunderbolt to ethernet connector the usb stops working. Any fixes for this?

Hi
Is this an official apple connector? I have been through many cheaper versions but only ever found the official apple one to work realiably. Also have you tried both thunderbolt ports? Try restarting the MPB and then try again i have had ports that sometimes don't work but then seem to awake again after a resart.
Hope this helps

  • Thunderbolt ethernet Problem

    Hi,
Have a 2013 Macbook Air lastest model and recently bolt a ethernet thunderbolt adapter to receive internet in other rooms but its failing to work!!
It recognises the adapter with a green light in network settings but still not working. Shouldn't this work straight away? I have tested the thernet cable with another computer and it works ok so I believe its the setup thats not right.
Any ideas to cure this simple problem?
    Much appreciated

Are you 100% sure your port that looks like a Thunderbolt port is actually a Thunderbolt port?
Here is a tech spec for the Late 2010 MacBook Air:
    MacBook Air (13-inch, Late 2010) - Technical SpecificationsOct 20, 2010
It has a port that looks exactly the same as a Thunderbolt port.  But it was Thunderbolt's predecessor - it is actually what was called a mini-display port.  A Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter would fit perfectly in this port, but could never possibly work because the port does not deal with a Thunderbolt signal.
If you don't know exactly which MacBook Air you have, you can go to "About This Mac" (under the Apple logo in the menu bar), then click "More Info" and see what it says toward the top (year, etc.).

  • Thunderbolt - Ethernet problem: Lion 10.7.5

    Hi,
I have a problem with my MacBook Air internet connection. I temporarily live at dorms where there's only ethernet internet conection and even though I have the Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter, the connection doesn't work. I also don't have the "ethernet" tab in my system preferences -> network. I found the "Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2.1." but that requires OS X Lion 10.7.4 while I have 10.7.5.
Any suggestions on how to solve this problem? I've read some discussions here and apparently I am not the only one with this problem, but no solution suits me, since all of them require the "ethernet" tab in preferences.
    Thank you!
    Lucy

  • Thunderbolt Gigabit ethernet adapter is recognized - but no internet connection

    Hello.
I just got a new macbook air. I need to connect it to the internet via ethernet cable - thus i purchased the Thunderbolt gigabit ethernet adapter, plugged it in - and nothing happened.
The cable is being recognized, in the networks section it shows the IP-address etc. and the little dot next to "ethernet thunderbolt" is green. but when I open safari, there is no internet connection.
Why is this? I have updated all available software. I also tried downloading the Thunderbolt Firmware Update (1.2.1) but I'm told it is not supported (i.e. it isn't installed).
Who can help me? I'm quite puzzled and don't seem to be able to find this same problem anywhere on the net.
    Thanks for your help

Is that quite lousy and am I a fool? ;-) I have turned it off. It didn't do the trick, I had already tried that numerous times.
BUT this time I also switched off the DSLmodem (an idea I hadn't had up until now, strangely enough - I had it only now while actually counting to 15) and then I ran the assistant again and the network was then finally being recognized for the first time.
Then I had to once more turn the router off and finally all the little status buttons turned green.
    Yeah!
Thanks a lot for your help and your readiness to help! I really appreciate it.

  • Thunderbolt Gigabit Ethernet Adapter doesn't work

Just plugged in a Thunderbolt Gigabit Ethernet Adapter into MacBook Pro 15" 2.7GHz i7, OS 10.7.4
It is recognized correctly by System Profiler, but not in System Preferences - the Adapter just isn't shown in Network.
    What is still needed?

    Got this update:
All Thunderbolt-equipped Mac computers support this adapter. This adapter requires OS X Lion v10.7.4 or later. Thunderbolt-equipped Macs released prior to June, 2012, require the installation of Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2.1 to use this adapter.

  • Can I connect my old mac to my new mac using the thunderbolt to ethernet adapter

I've got a lot of data to transfer from one mac to another, one with thunderbolt and one without. I was wondering if by using the thunderbolt to ethernet adapter I could connect the two macs in a target mode kinda way.
I know people will answer with a lot of other options in how to do this, but I am specifically interested in whether or not this option is possible.
    Thanks!

you can use the adapter with any Thunderbolt-equipped Mac running OS X Lion 10.7.4 or later, but you'll want to install the Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2.1 after having the 10.7.4 upgrade

  • No Wifi or thunderbolt to ethernet support for windows 8.1

After installing windows 8.1 on my new macbook pro 13, apple support software does not have the correct drivers for the network. Since retina mac does not have ethernet, even after connecting the thunderbolt to ethernet adaptor, no network. Any advise ?
By the way, I was always stuck on downloading the support software stage. So I found this link to manually download the same. But if there is a new version, please do let me know.

  • Does the apple thunderbolt to ethernet dongle support promiscuous mode ?

Does the apple thunderbolt to ethernet dongle support promiscuous mode ?
I need to use the new Retina MBP as a professional laptop for work, and I need to use Etherreal. Etherreal needs the Ethernet card/dongle/chip to run in Promiscuous mode. I have heard that unblivably the thunderbolt Ethernet dongle does not support this, if so then the laptop will not pick all the packets on the wire... is this true ?
    Regs Mark.

    Hi Clinton,
Thanks for your reply, However the promiscuous mode function that I am after is a function of the Ethernet NIC hardware and driver not just the OS.
Wireshark allows the user to put network interface controllers that support promiscuous mode into that mode, in order to see all traffic visible on that interface, not just traffic addressed to one of the interface's configured addresses and broadcast/multicast traffic.
Anyone out there actually used/tested the thunderbolt Ethernet adapter to sniff traffic with wireshark (Ethereal), can you please  if it can run in promiscuous mode ?
    Thanks.

  • Setup Thunderbolt Gigabit Ethernet adapter

How do I set up the Thunderbolt Gigabilt Ethernet adapter to work with my time capsule? I connect the cable from my Macbook Air to the time capsule port but nothing happens. It seems that it does not detect the connection.

If the Time Capsule hardware recognizes the connection you should see a tiny green light next to that Ethernet port on the Time Capsule.
Does Network Utility show you anything?  Have you tried several Time Capsule ports?

  • How to change the mac address of thunderbolt to ethernet adapter?

    Hello everyone,
I am using Macbook pro retina display 2013 version. I have bought a thunderbolt to ethernet adapter in order to connect my Macbook to LAN. But in my area there is a shared line and I have to clone their mac address to my Macbolok. I could not change the mac address of my thunderbot to ethernet adapter. Can anyone please tell me how to change the mac address of thunderbot to ethernet adapter step by step??
    Thanks in advance.

    Open terminal and type the followings;
    1) sudo ifconfig bridge0  ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx(it will be your new mac address)
    2) Type your password to confirm
    3) ifconfig bridge0 |grep ether (to see if change is successful)
PS: *This should with your thunderbolt adapter, but its not working usb to ethernet adapters without installing required drivers.
** You may need to do these steps every time you boot your mac.

  • Thunderbolt to Ethernet adaptor no longer works

    Hi All,
After upgrading to Maverick I find my Thunderbolt to Ethernet adaptor no longer works. Network app insists the cable isn't connected but the cable works fine with other pcs (a Raspberry Pi for instance).  Any suggestions?
    R.

If you have access to the Companies Intranet then the Ethernet connection is working just fine. The computer is getting a valid IP address from the companies DHCP server.
You need to take this up with the IT staff as it seems whatever IP your computer is getting it is being block from going out to the internet.

  • Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter transfer speed

I am connecting mbp retina to the time capsule via Ethernet. What is the best cable to use, cat 5e or cat 6, would there be a noticeable difference? (I am using the thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter). What would be a normal transfer time for 100GB of data?

Although either cable will work fine with the speeds available today, you can future proof yourself a bit with a CAT6 cable.
Data normally moves over Ethernet to the Time Capsule at 25-30 GB per hour, so allow 3-4 hours for the transfer time.

  • HELP!!! Mac G4 450mhz dual ethernet PROBLEMS!

Hello, my mac is having a serious problem with the internet. It won't connect, and even though i have a ethernet cable plugged in, it says i don't. Everything was working fine until i left for 2 days and and plugged it for that time. I need the internet in that mac as soon as possible.
    PLEASE HELP ME!

I too, am having the same problem... but mine isn't because of the possible software update, it just flat out doesn't work!
I too, have tried asking for help with the possibility of (hopefully) restoring the driver/extension... but after reformating the drive and reinstalling the software from 10.2, to 10.2.8 and it still failed to work, I ended up buying a Belkin Gigabit Ethernet PCI Card that has FAILED in every way!!!
The Belkin card will work as a one-time thing, and after restarting or disconnecting the Ethernet cable, it fails to function and fails to be "selectable" within the Ethernet configuration "Show:" options.
    ...so don't buy the Belkin...
I have yet to resolve my dead Ethernet problem, and it is... a problem!
I know this isn't contributing much of anything, but don't waist your time with the Belkin. I bought one, it acted in the way described above, and the Belkin Tech Support suggested I exchange it with another one, and so I did... and it too... is acting in the manner described above.
No resolve... no Ethernet... no on-line schtuff. not on that G4!!!
    Jon
