TIFF file partially locked?

I've opened a TIFF file and I wanted to start editing it. But I get a no-entry sign and the file says it is "partially locked". What am I doing wrong?!?!

What is the color mode and bit depth of the file?
One of the most common things would be to have a file such as yours with a bit depth of 16 bits/channel, which elements can perform very limited editing to.
You can check the color mode and bit depth under Image>Mode.
You probably want RGB Color and 8 bits/channel
If 8 bits/channel is not grayed out then click on it.
Did the file come from lightroom or camera raw?

  • XCOPY and ROBOCOPY hang if file is locked and Destination is network drive

Using XCOPY or ROBOCOPY to copy an Outlook .pst file while Outlook is open and has the file partially locked causes XCOPY and ROBOCOPY opertations to abort immediately and report the file as partially locked if the Destination is another drive on the same
PC or a USB drive.  But if the Destination drive is a network share (e.g.
\\Whatever\Whatever) then both XCOPY and ROBOCOPY hang forever - even after Outlook is closed and the file lock is released.  The old DOS command COPY properly recognizes the lock abd aborts regardless of the Destination location.  But COPY won't
replicate the file Create/Modify dates on the Destination location as XCOPY and ROBOCOPY do.  I'm using straight DOS from a .bat file
Anyone have any suggestions as to how to recognize this condition and avoid or correct it?  Sorry if this is the wrong forum.  I didn't know where else to post this.

I really don't know why I bother with the Microsoft forums when facing technical issues with Microsoft products. I should really just write an Adblock script that takes Google results for this site out of suggested search results.
Marking this sort of unrelated comment as an "answer" is what I've sadly come to expect of the Microsoft forums. I take it your personal worth as a moderator is measured in some way by how many such 'answers' you produce.
I, and I'm sure many others, would prefer it if you were just honest enough to say "we don't know" rather than pretend that issues don't exist like this. Trying to create an impression that you've provided help when you have not is very probably what keeps
you from ever improving these forums.
RoboCopy is NOT a script it is a system utility.  These forums are not customer support or a help desk.
The answers to this question are well known and should be asked for in the correct forum.  If you really need the answer to this particular question then just read the help for RoboCopy.  It is in there very explicitly.
When you call you PC vendor for support they will usually ask you to check to see if the PC is plugged in.  This is standard procedure. It is like pointing out to new PC users that they should also call the correct vendor and give correct information.
Posting a utility question in a scripting forum is the same as giving bad information about your problem.  After you have more experience with the technology you will see the importance of this.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • XCOPY and ROBOCOPY hang if file is locked nd Destination is a network drive

This question was first posted to the Scripting Forum.  They indcated I should switch to the Plarform Forum.  I'm hoping this is the right place.  So ...
On my home PCs, when using XCOPY or ROBOCOPY to copy an Outlook .pst file while Outlook is open and has the file partially locked causes XCOPY and ROBOCOPY opertations to abort immediately and report the file as partially locked if the Destination is another
drive on the same PC or a USB drive.  That's good, and is as I expect.  But if the Destination drive is a network share (e.g.
\\Whatever\Whatever) then both XCOPY and ROBOCOPY hang forever - even when specifying zero retries in ROBOCOPY and even after Outlook is closed and the file lock is released.  The old DOS command COPY properly recognizes
the lock and aborts regardless of the Destination location.  But COPY won't replicate the file Create/Modify dates on the Destination location as XCOPY and ROBOCOPY do.  I'm using straight DOS from a .bat file
Anyone have any suggestions as to how to recognize this condition and avoid or correct it?

Ivan-Liu: Thanks for your input.  The thread you referred me to looked promising, but ultimately was not a solution.
It focuses on ROBOCOPY and the use of an elevated command prompt.
First of all, as I initially reported, I found the same “hang” behavior with ROBOCOPY as with XCOPY.
Secondly, I prefer to avoid ROBOCOPY because one of the PCs I am trying to support is still running a version of Windows XP that does not make ROBOCOPY available to me.
I have not yet tried the operation when using “run as an administrator,” but my own login has administrator privilege and still exhibits the problem.
Moreover, the operation (both XCOPY and ROBOCOPY) always completes without issue when the .pst file is NOT locked.
The hang-up occurs only when I forget to close Outlook before initiating the XCOPY or ROBOCOPY operation.
I still need to confirm that the behavior is the same whether using a UNC pathname or a mapped drive name.
But my memory is that the copy operations still hang if the file is locked when the copy operation is initiated.
The two main PCs I use are running Windows-7 (one 64-bit and one 32-bit.)
The .pst file in question varies, but is typically between 100MB and 400MB.
The behavior is consistent, regardless of size.  I have not tested the behavior with smaller .pst files or with other locked files of any size.
I’m now of the belief that my issue relates to the specific storage solution I have in place, which consists of an external 1TB Seagate USB drive plugged into a Belkin router, which subsequently makes the drive visible to my Windows home network as a network
drive.  I don’t know if it’s a Seagate issue or a Belkin issue.
I’m still working to rule out Belkin by connecting the Seagate drive directly to a PC, but have not had time to complete that test yet.
I suspect Belkin, though, because attempts to XCOPY or ROBOCOPY to a thumb drive will abort immediately and report the file is locked.
Plus, I also have a separate problem wherein certain .xlsm files copied to the Seagate drive (when it is connected to the Belkin router) always report that they are corrupt if/when I attempt to use Excel to open the Seagate copy.
Excel always seems to successfully “repair” the files.
But I’ve been unable to discover a cause for that issue too.  Testing has shown that behavior to be consistent with both UNC and mapped drive names.

  • Animated gif from .ICO files - Indicates layer is partially locked

thanks for helping the non-graphics newb out...
trying to create my first animated gif. I have 8 .ico files that i converted to .png to open them. once all are open i try to combine into one file with 8 layers but am unable to do it!?!? If I click on the main layer in any file it shows as locked and says "Indicates layer is partially locked"

in any file it shows as locked and says "Indicates layer is partially locked"
That is normal. Just open the file you want to use as the base/background layer. Now open the file that will be the first layer up from that, press ctrl+a (cmd+a on a mac) to select all of it, then ctrl+c (cmd+c) to copy it. Switch back to the background layer, click in it, then press ctrl+v (cmd+v) to paste it and use the move tool to position it. Repeat for each layer. Note that layers in an animated gif do not play in front of hte base layer the way cartoon cels do, so that you see action in front of a backdrop. You must include everything you want to see at once in each layer.

  • How do I disable Illustrator (CS6) from recognising TIFF paths inside placed TIFF files?

    Hi all,
I have recently output a job to print that was supplied .AI with a simple .TIFF image placed on an artboard at its desired crop.
After referring to the original TIFF file I have realised whilst inside illustrator my image suddenly has a clipping mask attached to it, and a lot of it is missing. (however in outline, illustrator only see's a single TIFF bounding box)
Looking more closely at the TIFF in Photoshop, i've found it has x3 paths inside it!)
Illustrator is picking these up and masking my photo. Is there a default function or process that can stop this from happening in the future, so it ignores any paths within the file?
It's concerning how many jobs may be ruined because of this auto feature.
I look forward to your response
    Thanks
    Matt

haha, it's not an easy one to describe.
So when checking the TIFF initially, it is a flat locked image: (image below)
when placed into Illustrator CS2 and outputting a PDF, I get this correct result: (image below)
When placed into illustrator CS6 and output to PDF I get this incorrect result: (image below)
Close up detailing masking effect: (image below)
When looking more closely in photoshop at my TIFF, it has this inside of it: (image below)
However, in illustrator there is nothing I can release anywhere as it still treats it as a flat image: (image below)

  • Automatically Slicing Large TIFF Files with Photoshop 5.1

I am trying to automatically slice a very large TIFF file (800 MB) into 28 equally-sized rectangles using Actions (it is a scanned image of 28 scientific slides and reducing the resolution is not an option). My goal is to start with the TIFF file and end up with a folder that contains 28 separate files. I'll do this on many such TIFF files, so it needs to be coded into an action.
So far I have an action that creates guides in a grid pattern and then converts the guides to 28 individual rectangular user slices that together cover the entire screen. Unfortunately the file is far too large  to use with the "Save for Web & Devices" tool and I also can't export to TIFF from that tool. So I made an action that individually selects each slice (using the slice select tool), copies it, creates a new file, pastes the image, saves it as a flattened, non-compressed TIFF into a new folder, then closes the file. When I try to run this I get the following error:
The command "Select" is not currently available
              -- Continue --       -- Stop --
If I press Continue the action is not carried out. If I press Stop and select the slice manually there is no problem (but then my action will not be fully automated). The image is in 8-bit RGB mode, and I've also tried converting the locked Background layer into a standard layer. I don't see any reason why the select command shouldn't be available! There is only one layer and there are user slices available for selection. I tried separating the slicing and select/import jobs into 2 different actions but it still didn't work.
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

  • Photoshop CS4, Saved a Tiff file now won't open correctly

I saved a file as a .tif and it saved as normal then I shut down Photoshop and then the PC. The next day when I try to open the file it doesn't open correctly it opens but the right hand side of the photo is on the left and the left hand side of the image is now on the right, its like its been cut in half and put pack the wrong way.
It also didn't open with the layers only as a locked background. When I view the file in the icon it looks fine until I open it.
    Help!

Laura, I'd guess this is not promising for you.  TIFF files tend to be large, so I am wondering if you might have closed Photosho and the PC before it had finished saving?  Do you remember the pixel size of the original image, and what is the file size in Mb?  I am not sure how Photoshop treats TIFF images, depite them owning the file format after buying it from Aldus a few years ago, but it sounds like it was saved as a series of tiles, and the information about the order of those tiles is corrupted.  You might be able to Google TIF file recovery program, but it is unlikely you'll get the full file back with all the information saved with it.
If you don't get a better answer, keep a weather out for when Chris Cox is posting, and bump this thread.
    Good luck

  • Layer is Partially Locked question?

    I'm using Windows 7 64 bit but I use Photoshop CS5 32 bit.
In my Layers Panel every file that I open up has that little icon (Indicates Layer is partially Locked).
A lot of my functions are grayed out because of this condition. If I duplicate the Layer or put a selection around a layer or make a new layer (Layer 0) all previous grayed out functions now work.
I uninstalled and reinstall PS CS 5 but still had the same problem. Is there something I can do about this condition?
                    Thank you

I'm not sure if this is your problem, but every time an image is opened for the first time in Photoshop, there is one layer called Background.  This layer is automatically locked.  You can convert the Background layer into a normal (unlocked) layer by double-clicking on the word Background. You are prompted to give the layer another name (default is Layer 0).

  • Duplicate TIFF files when using "Edit in PS CS5"

    Hello there,
I'm using LR 4.3 and CS5, with ACR 6.7 installed. Whenever I'm using "Edit in PS CS5" comand inside LR, automatically I'm getting a duplicate TIFF file added to my LR catalog. How can I avoid this? Thank you for your time!

    bcondoral wrote:
So this happens because 4.1 is compatible with ACR6.7 and 4.3 is not?
There are two basic behaviors regarding Lightroom and Camera Raw versioning:
If the Lightroom version and the Camera Raw version are equal (meaning LR 4.3 and ACR 7.3) Lightroom passes the image from LR to Photoshop using ACR to render the file. In this case, LR doesn't need to render the file and to the -Edit save when opening into Photoshop. Photoshop does the render and when saved, will pass that file creation back to Lightroom for adding in the catalog.
However, whenever the LR version and ACR version do NOT match, Lightroom does the rendering (to be sure of proper rendering) and save the file on disk before passing the image to Photoshop. So, if you are using mismatched LR/ACR versions, this second behavior comes into play.
As ssprengel correctly notes, there was a slight modification to these behaviors when LR 4 first shipped because it shipped before Photoshop CS6 and ACR 7 shipped. LR 4.0 and 4.1 (the quick dot release for camera compatibility reasons) were made to work with ACR 6.7 in Photoshop CS5 with the first behaviors working...
LR 4.2 and above do not have the ACR 6.7 compatibilities so the behavior of the LR render and file saving requirement kicks in.
For optimal compatibility both LR and ACR should be kept in lock-step. Since the release of CS6, ACR 6.7 is the last version of ACR for CS5, so you lose some intigration and functionality by not upgrading to Photoshop CS6 and ACR 7.x.

    Hello,
Ee have a bunch of scanned documents saved as tiff. How can I show them? Web app server won't preview them and this is a real big issue.
On the other hand, websio does the job, but  I wouldn't like to have websio and web app server coexist.

  • I downloaded an upgrade but when I try to put it in the applications, it says the file is locked. when I unlock it, it still doesn't let me drag it, and reverts back to being locked when I close the window. I am using Mac Lion.

I opened Firefox this morning and it told me I needed to download a newer version. I downloaded the new version. I got the image prompting me to drag Firefox to the applications folder. When I do that, it asks if I want to replace the old Firefox, I click 'yes' and enter my password. It tells me the file is locked. I open 'get info', unlock the file and enter my password. It claims I have read and write access privileges. I then try again to drag Firefox to the applications folder - it says the same thing about the file being locked. I check again under 'get info', and Firefox has reverted to being locked again. I unlock it again and without closing that window, i.e. when it is still showing unlocked, I try again to drag it. Same message.
Now I can't use Firefox at all because it has corrupted the old version I was using and I am unable to download the new one.
I am using Mac OS 10.7.2, Lion, on a MacBook Pro.

What exactly is the error you get?
How are you attempting this copy?
There's almost certainly a way to accomplish what you want to do (probably best from the terminal possibly copying the entire user dir and fixing up permissions, etc.) but I'm not sure you will end up with the results you want.  There are plists in the preferences dir that you probably don't want to copy over (e.g., many of the com.apple.* prefererences).  And many apps also create more than just plists.  There may be stuff in Application Support, LaunchAgents, Internet Plug-Ins, etc.).  And this would be stuff you do want to copy.  Bottom line is it is not a trivial exercise which is probably why the system is slapping your hands for even attempting it

the message"The itun, library .itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file". i have windows 8. how why did this happen? how do i correct this and prevent another occurance?  I am able to access itunes on my i5, ipad, and my old i4 that i use solely as my ipod now. At the time  problem occurred, i was connected to ext hard drive that hold over 190GB music, to add to my library. I am now unable to add to my library using my laptop.  any advise/help is greatly appreciated!!

I just had the same problem and was able to fix it after trying a couple of things I found after a search.
The solution that worked for me:
Find iTunes folder - it should be in C:\Program FIles (x86) or similar depending on your operating system
Right click the entire folder (no need to open it) and click properties
    Click the security tab
Click edit and highlight the user name under which you logged in.
Click the box next to full in the allow column, which should check everything
    Click apply
    Open iTunes
    This worked for me.

  • How To Fix: "The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."

I can't reopen my iTunes after I have to force quit when it does not respond. I get this message:
"The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."
I've read to do the solutions. I right clicked on both the iTunes and Music folder and went to info for each. On both the lock at the bottom of the Get Info was locked. All of my users including admin can read and write all files within those folders. They are even a shared folder. I clicked on the lock to unlock it, typed in my admin password, and went to the gear to apply to all files inside. After doing that I keep getting the saved message.
I tried another way that I've found online to move my ituneslibrary folder to the desktop and then open my iTunes. In theory the iTunes is supposed to ask for where the iTunes library is. Once that is prompted you quit iTunes and drag the iTunes Library folder back to the folder from the desktop and reopen iTunes to apprently solve the problem. However, when I move the iTunes Library file to the desktop and try to reopne iTunes the icon just keeps bouncing and when I right click the application does not respond.
This problem is only resolved if I restart/shut down my macbook pro which is a 15-inch Core 2 Duo with intel. It will be 5 years old in December. I currently have Lion and the latest iTunes 10.5. This problem started in late December.

If you hold down the option key when starting iTunes, it will allow you to select a library or create a new one.
You can create a new one, and then add all of your iTunes music back in by simply dragging the old iTunes music file onto iTunes.
There are more detailed instructions at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451#
It will show you how to re-build your iTunes database file.
