Tiger Mail with Leopard

New iMac 2.4 Ghz - OSX 10.5.1. Since I loaded Leopard, mail will send to server smtp.att.yahoo.com successfully one time in four tries. Error message says server doesn't support authentication. Standard speed AT&T DSL. Receiving mail and send or receive mail in Yahoo mail is solid. Mail will send through AOL server every time. All settings are correct. Second level of Apple Help couldn't fix. AT&T help has convinced me that because Yahoo mail uses same authentication logic the problem is in Mac Mail. Have reinstalled Mail and Leopard. No Help.
Can I remove mail that came with Leopard and install the older version that was with Tiger? It worked fine.

Try going to Mail/Preferences/Accounts/Outgoing SMTP Server for the email account you're having a problem with/Edit Server list/click on the server you're having the problem with/Advanced tab and enter 587 in Server port box, Authentication Password, enter your account's user name and password.
I've been having odds and ends of SMTP issues for years from home because I use DSL on a local phone network. It won't allow authentication when used at home because I'm already logged into the network at home. But, away from home one MUST use authentication. Similarly, Earthlink won't allow access to its SMTP servers from another ISP's network, assuming your computer may be generating SPAM email since it can't confirm who you are. The work around is to use port 587 with your email account's authentication. Not everyone opens port 587, but it works more often than not.

  • Tiger Mail to Leopard Mail turmoil

I have just finally made the leap from OSX Tiger to Leopard and so far everything is cool...BUT when it comes to the mail program I am about to pull my hair out.  I have copied, by hand, all of my mail settings, incoming and outgoing, and I keep getting errors when trying to send mail.  I can recieve emails just can't send.  On Tiger Mail I even had a specific port  with SSL designated and when I tried to use that same port the Leopard mail program wouldn't let me use the port???
Why would server settings that have been working in Tiger for 5-6 years not work with Leopard

I had actually only gotten a message about the port once, but mostly my servers are offline.  everytime I try to send an email I get a message to choose another server...
this is what I get everytime.  from what I am finding online, this is happening alot with Leopard and Mail3.x

  • Tiger Mail to Leopard Mail - Auto Complete Addresses?

    Hi there,
I've recently backed up my friend's complete Home folder from Tiger, along with all other Tiger assets required to hopefully make a smooth migration to Leopard.
    NERD SCENARIO:
Apple Mail: My friend relied heavily on "Automatically complete addresses" in Apple Mail, otherwise known as Automatic Addressing, aka: auto complete TO: email addresses when typing a name. Unfortunately, when migrating to Leopard, he has now lost auto addressing after I migrated his old email (Inbox, Sent, Deleted, etc.) He's savvy, but not savvy enough to know to add his recipients to his Apple Address Book -- therefore Leopard Mail is only auto completing recent mail within this past week. I'm now trying to inform him to begin adding people to his Address Book so this doesn't happen again -- but it might be too late? He used to rely heavily on Auto Addressing to remember email addresses prior.
    TRANSLATION:
    1. How can I pull date or history from my backed up Mail folder from Tiger to import back into Leopard so "Auto Addressing" will remember email addresses prior?
    2. Did I not backup his mail correctly? I burned an almost exact mirror of his hard drive to a DVD.
    3. Has he lost his ability to auto address old email addresses? Since he didn't add them to his Address Book?
    Thanks for any help!

I just did the same thing, transferring all my data from Tiger to a new Leopard MacBook Pro, and now I can't access ANY of my addresses from my old address book, even tho I can see all the data sitting in Library... How the heck do I get the hundreds of addresses into my new address book? And, why won't my new Mail pick up all the Auto-Complete addresses from the old program if I transferred everything over?

  • Can't import my mailboxes from Tiger Mail into Leopard

    Hi everyone,
I bought a new MBP and I'm now in the process of carefully importing my mailboxes from Tiger mail, on my Tiger backup HD, to the new mail program. I have about 20000 messages saved since 1999, sorted by project etc. Each time I select a batch of mailboxes to import, I get a failure message when it's almost done, saying that some messages couldn't be imported. This is very frustrating: my e-mail archive is possible the most important collection of files on the computer. I would hate for it to become messed up/corrupted.
    Thanks for any suggestions!
    Alex

Try copying the directory ~/Library/Mail/ (the library folder in your home directory) from your old computer to the same location on your Leopard install. I believe the versions of Mail in Tiger and Leopard use the same directory structure, so this should work.

  • Need Help Migrating Tiger Mail to Leopard

    Hi,
I just did a clean install of Leopard on my Powerbook and it's running fine. I made a copy of my library/mail and the com.apple.mail.plist file from my Tiger Mail and burnt it to a DVD.
Once i installed leopard I tried to import and it said it could find any mailboxes even when i pointed it in the right direction. Does anyone know how to do this properly? I need to get my mail app looking like it was on TIger pretty soon for work etc.
    Thanks
    Fjord

    Okay
This is what I ended up doing in the end. My mail is a Yahoo Small Business POP account. So...after many different failing methods...
I added the account in Preferences, it then imported all 2000+ mail messages back from the server once this was done, I Imported the SENT mailbox from my clone of Tiger, the program then creates the following mailbox: On My Mac>IMPORT>Sent Messages, i dragged all the messages from this into my SENT box at the top of the list and deleted the IMPORT one.
I then had to re-create all my smart mailboxes from scratch. So, this is not really a proper full-on solution but it's the only way for me to get my SENT messages back which is the most important I guess when using a POP account from your desktop.
    Hope it helps.

  • Importing emails from Entourage into MAIL with Leopard

Went through the importing procedure but only 20% of emails imported into MAIL and then all emails were deleted from Entourage. Any similar problems or ideas on how to retrieve emails in Entourage?

I had this problem with 5 years of saved mailboxes. I figured out a way to get around it. After importing to macmail from entourage to set up macmail, I opened the import folder in macmail and deleted all the mailboxes as some had mail but most did not (I did not want to sift through >25K mails to make sure I did not miss one). Keep both macmail and entourage programs open. Create a temporary subfolder in the inbox on the exchange server using entourage. Move all the mailboxes containing mail to this subfolder in the inbox through entourage. Once everything is moved to the inbox, switch to macmail. Highlight all the mailboxes containing mail that are in the temporary folder in the inbox on the exchange server. Drag them to the import folder in macmail.
I can now discard Entourage and its clunkiness.

  • Apple Mail with Leopard

It seems like there are two kinds of people. Some send email with subject lines and some without. I'm surprised Apple doesn't give us a choice to avoid that annoying reminder in Mail preferences. Does anyone know how to register a suggestion with Apple? Applecare just told me to go to a feedback page but Mail wasn't listed as a choice to leave feedback. Thanks.

If you think about this carefully, why would anyone want to read a message without a subject? It's a common tactic with spammers, and in my view, I've decided that for anyone who can't provide a subject in their email, it's not worth reading, so it gets deleted immediately.
You need to provide a Subject for all email. Because it's a tactic of spammers, many email servers will flag email without it as spam, and many companies will filter it out so that it's deleted before it ever reaches the intended recipient. It's not hard, and it takes only a moment, so there's no reason not to do it.
If you want to give feedback about this, you can do it on the Mac OS X Feedback page -- you would choose Design/Ease of Use for the Feedback Type and Mail as the Feedback Area.

  • Mail with leopard on one and snow leopard on another?

I have Leopard on my MBP and Snow Leopard on my new iMac. When I went to open Mail on the iMac it asked if I wanted to convert all my mail. If I do it, will I still be able to read it from my MBP?

    Hi
Yes, the SL upgrade won't affect your mail on any other computers.

  • Mail Preview Function is not good as Tiger Mail!

Hi, I have currently upgraded to Leopard found that the system is much more powerful. As I received many emails everyday and mail program is one of the programs that I used most. I found that the preview function in Leopard mail is not good as tiger mail. If the mail comes with only few photos, it still ok to open them, but I found that if it comes with more than 10 or more, the preview function try very hard to load the photos and the rainbow balloon keep on running until the system hanged.
I had tried the function in Tiger Mail with over even 100 photos but still fine, I don't know why Leopard Mail will that weak as it just a simple function. I don't know you guys have this problem or not but I found this function very useful and convenient, and I hope Leopard won't let me disappointed.

  • AE not working with Leopard and fed up

It happened a while ago, and set it up again, and again, again.
It all stated after upgrading to Leopard
Today I was about to listen to some music through AE, and once again it didn't work. I had the green light on, it shows as connected in my router setup page. I have change internet suppliers a couple of month ago and have brand new router, but it was happening with my previous router too. In fact in the last 5 months I have used 4 different router, all branded. Airport Utility couldn't find AE.
Today I spend more than 2h simply trying to set it up again.
It took 4 or 5 hard reset before Airport Utility finally found the AE.
When I clicked on continue, 9 time out of 10 I got
    Base Station Error
Airport Utility was unable to find Apple wireless device
while it is was obliviously showing before
    and back to hard reset.
If I connect an ethernet cable I get the self-addressed IP trouble, but strangely I have managed to set up AE only when the ethernet cable was connected, but the set-up was through WIFI, as it asked me to switch network.
I tried to switch off the firewall with no success either.
I looked at my local wireless networks using iStumber, and once again find some new network with the same channel as mine, so I changed mine to a channel not used. I did this a month ago already.
As I said some how after 2h of wasted time etc, I finally managed to get it going, and started to listen to some radio with Airfoil. After about an hour of listening, it when dead again.
Airport Utility doesn't find the device any more, like at the start of the day. iTunes doesn't make it available, my green light is on, my router shows it as connected, and of course I cannot print any more.
I am getting really fed up. It has been working ok for a couple of years with Tiger, but with Leopard it just works when either it wants.
After all these are Apple products, are not cheap, and don't work.
All are with last firmware, last upgrade etc..
Please tell me why all this is happening, why there isn't any fixes. We are 10.5.6 more than 18 month after launch of Leopard, with snow leopard about to become available. Is it because I am using a non intel machine?
    Many thanks

Reading over your message, I am a little unclear about how far along you are in sharing your LightRoom setup with the Laptop. I am going to assume that right now Lightroom and the pictures are both on the PC and on an internal Hard Drive. And except for the scary message you had at the beginning of changing to ver 1.2, everything is working ok. Yes?
What I'd do is wait until you get the external drive up and working. Once you are satisfied that the system works ok, and you have tested it with whatever diagnostic software you use, you are ready to start moving your images to the new drive.
Do a good backup of your images to your backup drive.
Move them to the hard drive from within Lightroom: Use the '+' symbol in the heading of the Folders panel to tell LR to add a new folder from the external drive to the LR folders panel, and then drag and drop the folders already in LR over to their new home.
This way the LR Catalog will always know where the files are.
Then when you are sure that all the image files are on the external drive and LR sees them all and everything is working correctly, exit from LR and copy the catalog file over there.
I used to use windows systems, although I converted to Mac a few years ago. You should be able to double-click on that catalog file that is on the external drive and it should start Lightroom and you should be good to go.
I just used the word "should" three times meaning I'm not really positive about that last step; if I'm wrong I hope someone on a PC will post a correction.
Once it is working OK on the PC with the external drive Load LR on the Laptop.
    Best Wishes!

  • Mail with Lion

ever since session installs lemon when initiating opens mail, (with leopard not open), and I do not have noticeable the option in dock “to open when initiating session”

I haven't found any solution but yes mac mail is painfully slow sending and receiving mail.  Even more so then Snow Leopard.  Before it was slow when you were outside of the corporate network ie not at office or on vpn now it does make much of a difference.
We run Exchange 2007 SP2 for what its worth.  I am hoping Apple fixes issues soon or Exchange 2010 resolves it when migrate in several months.

  • Why won't Mail.app rules won't migrate, System Tiger to System Leopard?

    Hi,
Mail.app rules won't migrate from System Tiger to System Leopard.
    Here's what I did:
-- Clean install of System Leopard 10.5.6 onto a new Mac Pro.
-- Used Migration Assistment to move files from System Tiger to System Leopard 10.5.6.
-- Mail.app's rules failed to migrate.
So, I manually finder-copied MessageRules.plist into the proper folder to replace the newly created and empty rules set in System Leopard's mail.app, and afterwards, the rules then showed up in mail's preferences.
However, the "manually migrated" [finder copied] rules won't run.
In order to narrow the scope of the problem, I moved the former System Tiger's mail.app rules to the desktop and allowed mail.app to re-create a new rules plist file, then I created a test rule and it worked.
    Questions:
Why won't System Tiger's mail.app rules files migrate to System Leopard, and won't work upon manual migration?
What is the remedy to "properly import" the rules to the new [System Leopard based] mail.app, or to make the manually moved rules plist file work?
For what it's worth I did follow the procedures at
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread....9306&tstart=90
in order to make the messages migrate, but that failed to affect the rules.
    Thanks much,
    Jack

  • Exceeding IMAP-Traffic with Leopard Mail

I'm seeing some weird network traffic on my mailserver over IMAPS. I configured Mail.app to fetch my mail via IMAPS from my cyrus imap server. Since some weeks I get traffic warning from my provider. The traffic exceeding the former values about 2 or 3 times. I tracked this down with ntop on my server and see that there is a lot of IMAPS traffic. About 780 MB within a few ours to my MacBook with Leopard.
So I assume that the new Mail.app is behaving different then Mail.app in Tiger. The exceeding traffic seems to start when I swiched to Leopard.
    Can anyone confirm this?

Yes you are right. The reason is simple and quite sad
Let assume you want to send a mail with an attachment of 1 MB size.
First you send the mail via SMTP: upload traffic 1 MB so far. Then your Sent Items folder gets synchronized: another instance of the message is downloaded: 2 MB total.
Then your All mail folder gets synchronised: that includes All mail, hence Sent Items as well: another 1 MB download will be generated.
    Summary:
Sending 1 MB invokes the upload of 1 MB and the download of 2 MB.
If you receive an email of 1 MB size: downloading to Inbox (1 MB), downloading to All Mail (1 MB)
    Summary:
Receiving 1 MB invokes the download of 2 MB.
The problem is related to two different issues: one with the sending-sent items relationship, the other is the missing unsubscribe option for IMAP (such function only works for Exchange).

  • Tiger Mail on Snow Leopard?

I have been using Tiger's Mail program as my main mail application. Now I need to get my mail on my Macbook Pro.
Problem is: Mail in Tiger has an option under "Edit", of "Paste as HTML". This works beautifully.
In Snow Leopard this option has been removed, and although "Paste" does sort of work (with adding attachments for images), I get my quoted message mangled in replies from recipients of my html mails.
Question: Can I instal and use Tiger Mail on Snow Leopard, and how should I go about it?

You had me very excited for a moment there, Tom, when I saw how elegantly Safari does this, but...
I do my html in Pagespinner, then preview in Safari. Safari > File > Mail Contents of this Page, does not deliver my images. (I suppose I could link to image files on a web server...)
On the other hand, in Tiger, I select all, and copy in Safari, then Edit > Paste as html, in Mail. And my friends receive a perfect html email, with images and formatting.
I just got my little G4 iBook back, and Tiger with it, so once again, I can do my thing , but I would dearly love a similarly elegant solution in Snow Leopard.

  • Will Tiger Mail Folder and Mail Plists Work Within Leopard?

    Hi Gang
With help from the crew here, I know exactly how to restore Mail Folders, Safari Folders, .plist files etc. And although I'll probably do a fresh install of Tiger 10.4.11, I wonder if I can use my saved mail folders, and other data for an install of Leopard? Are the folders/data compatible with each other, Tiger data into Leopard?
    Thanx
    Mike

OS X upgrades are always designed to be backwards compatible with user preference files. that means that generally, leopard Mail will understand Tiger mail data and plists (but not vice versa). that's of course assuming that there is no mail data or plist corruption and such.
