Time Capsule not Decreasing in Size

Hi everyone.
I have what seems like a silly question.  When my computer is doing backuos to the Time Capsule (over a wifi network), the disk does not appear to be getting smaller in size.  What I mean is that the time capsule drive I use is still saying "26.51 GB available."  My last backup was a relatively large one (~9 GB).  In looking at the Console, and verifying this by entering the Time Machine, all the backups have completed successfully, so I'm not all that concerned about it.
What started this was that I needed space on the drive, so I was fiddling with things, at first moving to another drive, but realized that didn't have enough space on the drive, so I switched back to the old drive, deleting files on the drive (not from Time Machine) that I no longer needed, as they were taking up the most space.
Here's the code from the last 2 backups.

The inside and outside of the sparsebundle are two different things.. when you delete old backups they remove space from inside the sparsebundle but that space is not recovered to the TC.. nor is space used on the TC until the space is used up again inside the sparsebundle.
Pondini has some info about it.

  • Airport time capsule not found error message

    HI,
My time capsule is blinking orange.
I open aiport, sometimes airport finds the TC, sometimes not.
    When not, get message:
    "airport time capsule not found"
When TC is found, aiport utitily shows an error with the extended network I am setting up. I press 'edit', the settings all seem good. Re-type passwords etc and update.
    The problem remains.
I have updated the firmware. An apple shop near me has reset TC using the recessed button on back of TC, and then I have re-configured at home.
BTW, TC was working fine in my old house with same laptop, so prob not simply a basic user issue...
4 other devices on my wifi network all have reliable connection, visitors' phones and laptops too, so shouln't be a wifi netowrk issue, ie network outside TC.
    Any thoughts out there?
    HOpe so!
    mana

yes, running airport 6.1, OS 10.7.5
OK.. I failed to ask enough questions.. I think your comment it all used to work threw me.
    1. You are trying to extend wireless network of what router. This will only work with another Apple router.. the way apple built it is in the family only. So please spell out what is the primary router??
If you did have it working to extend the wireless of a non-apple router in your previous house I simply don't know how.. according to Apple it isn't possible. You can use WDS.. that is slow and reduces everything to G wireless.. that is the only way.
    2. When you say in the first post..
4 other devices on my wifi network all have reliable connection, visitors' phones and laptops too, so shouln't be a wifi netowrk issue, ie network outside TC.
I presume if you turn off the TC, these devices still have wireless network because they are connected to the primary router.. not the TC.. again my bad reading.. I assumed they are connected to the TC.
So please spell out the whole network..
    Broadband modem.. type, model, make.
    Main router.. type model make
    Any other network devices.
And how was it setup in your old place and how is it different now.

  • Time Capsule not visible in disk utility

i'm trying to create a disk image on my time capsule to so i can store some seperate media files and the time capsule is not available in the disk utility when its connected via the network. do I need to be connected through and ethernet cord for this to work?
    Thanks.

When you click New Image, a setup box will appear.
Make sure that the little arrow in the top box next to Save As appears in the "up" position
Look for your Time Capsule under the SHARED heading in the Finder window on the left
    Click the Time Capsule icon
Then double click on the Time Capsule folder to the right
Type a name in the Save As box at the top
    Name the Disk Image
Select the size of image that you want
Keep the format of Mac OS Extended Journaled and single partition and read/write disk image
    Click Create
It takes about an hour for a 25-30 GB disk image to be created, so do this using Ethernet. Allow 3-5 times longer if you do this using wireless
Some users find it easier to save the Disk Image to the desktop and then move it over the Time Capsule disk, but this takes longer.

  • Time Machine Error - Time Capsule not big enough?

I have a 500GB Time Capsule which I use solely to back up my Macbook. Time Machine is giving me an error message as below:
This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 176.38 GB but only 121.14 GB are available.
Looking on the Time Capsule, the current Sparsebundle is about 376GB - so I'm not sure why Time Machine is suddenly failing to just increment onto that?
    Am I missing something?

Do the math: 500 GB less 376 GB gives 124 GB, around the size that Time Machine says is available. It seems that Time Machine is trying to create an entirely new, complete backup of your computer. Did anything change with your computer recently, such as the disk drive or main logic board? Either of these can make Time Machine want to start over.

  • Time Capsule not freeing up space after deleting

I started getting the Yellow light on my Time Capsule alerting me to Low Disc Space on it. I do use it for both backups AND storage of some other files. I went in and started deleting large files and/or transferring them back to my MacBook Pro. After getting about 40G of files off the Time Capsule it still shows only 7G available. Is there something else I am supposed to do to free up this space? Is there some kind of reformatting I am supposed to do? Thanks in advance for your help!

    Welcome to the discussions, Mbergwall!
Because it is a network drive, files on the Time Capsule are stored in a special container called a sparsebundle file. The odd thing about a sparsebundle is that it will grow as new data is added, but if data is deleted, the indicated size of the sparsebundle stays the same, even though you have deleted data.
As you add more new data, the size of the sparsebundle will remain the same until it needs to grow again. There are Terminal commands available if you need to "compact" the sparsebundle to show the actual size of the file. Be very careful with anything in the Terminal. It is a scary place that is best not visited.
Take a look at Pondini's excellent FAQ on Time Machine, #12, the pink box for more details and the "how to" if you want to try this.

  • Time Capsule not backing up -  Most of storage space used.

I have a a 1TB time Capsule that only has 50.0 GB left. It has worked fine until of late. It now will not back up no matter how small I make the file to backup. It tells me backup disk image could not be mounted. It was giving me another error message until I lowered the file size to backup. Suggestions and also is there a way to delete Time Machine usage space (not other files) from Time Capsule. Guessing that it is not deleting to make room for more. Help.

Sorry to hear that you are having problems. Before you think seriously about erasing the Time Capsule, it would be a good idea to make sure that it will have adequate space to backup your computer(s) and leave plenty of space for incremental backups.
Right click your Hard Drive icon and select Get Info to get the specifics for each of your computers. The general rule of thumb is that your Time Capsule should have enough space to backup both computers and another half of the space will still be available for backups. For example, your two computers have a total of 250Gigs stored, so you would need a minimum of a 500Gig Time Capsule.
If you decide to erase the Time Capsule, open AirPort Utility. Click on Manual Setup, then click on the Disk icon at the top of pane. Then click on Disk just below the icons and you will see an "Erase" option. Allow plenty of time for the process, overnight is a good option.
When you are ready to try backups again, you will need to completely reset Time Machine by selecting your Time Capsule as the disk you want to use and click Use for Backups. You will need to do this for both computers.
Try to use an ethernet cable for the first backup by connecting to one of the LAN ports on the Time Capsule and your computer. Allow plenty of time for this. It might take 1-2 days. Once the backup for the first computer is done, then do the other computer the same way. You can probably use wireless for incremental backups since they will be much smaller and faster.
    Post back on your progress.

  • Time Capsule Not Working With Time Machine

I'm trying to backup to my Time Capsule, which I haven't used in over two years. It had been displaced because of a change in internet service providers. The new provider came in with a Linksys router, setup a sub-network, and left the Time Capsule/Airport out of the mix.
So I want to return to using my Time Capsule and have since pulled out the Linksys router, and got the Airport functionality working with the existing, primary network. In other words, the Time Capsule/Airport is working to extend the range of the network.
Problem is this: I cannot backup to the Time Capsule. Even if I'm connecting to the Time Capsule via ethernet, I cannot get it past the 'preparing' phase when running Time Machine. It stays at the phase for what seems to me an inordinate amount of time (30-45 minutes). If I go into System Preferences, the Time Capsule disk doesn't make itself available when using it with Time Machine. If I choose to go into the Star Wars display of Time Machine, I can sort of see the various backups, but I can't roll back to them, and the backup indicator on the right looks sort of ghosted, like it's there but it's not there.
How do I know if the disk within the Time Capsule is failing? Could that be what's going on? How would I test it? I get a green light on the front of the TC, but not everything is hunky dory since I'm not able to backup.
Is part of my problem that I'm using a not up-to-date version of Airport Utility? –I'm using 5.4.2

Oh and here it is, on this page, Section D, #1:

  • HT1175 3TB time capsule not working with new iMac

I have a 3TB time capsule that's c. 2 years old. It worked perfectly with my old iMac. I bought a new 27" one when it came out this year and since the time capsule will not work.
I had to clear all the data as a starter. Now it gets a little into the backup taking c. 1 day then resets. It's connected via ethernet cable and has been told to join an existing network.
Currently it says it's backing up 922,498 items, after 2 hours (this is the third attempt, it resets then has no record of the old backup) it says 10kb of 789.44 GB - About 4,664,440 days remaining!!
To clarify I'm trying to use Time Machine with the Time Capsule.
    Please help!!

You have made a mistake in the setup.
You do not "Join an existing networking" and use ethernet.. they are mutually exclusive.
What you are doing is backing up over double hop wireless which is slowing to a crawl.
You need to put the TC into bridge mode.. and plug it into the main router by ethernet. Then use wiretess to the TC if you are too far away or ethernet if you are close by..
As soon as you put the TC into join a wireless network it deactivates the ethernet.

  • Lion Upgrade Complete... Time Capsule Not Found?

Just upgraded to Lion on my MacBook Pro.  No longer able to see my Time Capsule (which I only use as a backup device)?  Any Ideas... I tried the thread in a message below to adjust the name of the device, but my MacBook no longer recognizes or can find on rescan the Time Capsule.  It is on, and plugged in, with a slow yellow blinking light.

My time capsule is reporting normal operation.  It is connected directly to ethernet, not wireless and it is not an access point.  here is the message
There is a problem connecting to the server " Dean-Nebrigs-Time-Capsule.local".
Any words of wisdom to get this Apple device to work with Apple Lion?

  • Time Capsule not found ... and yet I know exactly where it is.

I've installed ML on both my MBPro and my iMac, both recent models (late 2010 iMac; late 2011 MBPro).  I use my Time Capsule as my WiFi hub as well.  Since the upgrade, two things that I know of are not working properly: Time Capsule backups and Home Sharing in iTunes.  I'll save the Home Sharing for another thread.
I frequently look up at the menu bar and see an exclamation point in the center of the Time Capsule backup indicator, and when I click on it, I get a message saying that the backup disc can't be found.  This will happen throughout the day, and then, though I've done nothing, not even unplugging and re-plugging the router, it'll be back and ready for back up.  When I select Back Up Now, it will, but it takes several minutes.  The latest 10.8.1 update doesn't even address this.
Any insight from anyone? Does it have to do with 5ghz v.s 2.4ghz?  Have my walls gotten thicker in my apartment?  And, by the way, the network itself is fine - I never lose connection to the internet, and even when home sharing isn't working, I can still pick up other shared libraries.

I don't know how it got there, but dwarvenhut is correct—it's an extension that doesn't seem to do anything, and it uses a non-existent component (components/f8bd48d8.dll in my case).
To delete it from the extensions list, delete the folder in the Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions directory; mine was called "{39fdc2ab-b323-a8a8-a497-763ced813cae}".

  • Time capsule not being recognized by time machine on macbook

Hi, This is my first post.  I have an imac, macbook, iphones ipods, and a time capsule
when i installed the time capsule it worked fine on both computers then after an update the macbook no longer recognizes the time capsule in airport so it can not back up to it in time machine.  The time capsule data drive can be accessed from that computer and the internet works fine, it is just not showing up in airport.
    Any ideas???
If I upgraded to lion would that fix it?

Try just doing a reset to the TC..
An upgrade to lion might just put you into the fire.. even the frying pan is better.
I would suggest you downgrade the firmware on the TC to 7.5.2 as later firmware is more buggy and adds nothing for OS earlier than Lion.. on the contrary it causes more issues.
This will not harm your existing backups.
Are the two computers both connected by ethernet?? Is the connection issue over wireless?
Give a bit more info on the network layout. Mode of the TC.. are any computers using ethernet?

  • Time Capsule Not Recognized by PC

I've replaced my old router with a new Time Capsule (TC).  The router is connected to a Motorola SB6120 cable modem for internet access via my cable TV company.  Set up of the TC seemed to go smoothly, the network still has the same SSID and WEP security code as it did before, picked up automagically from the old router during the set up.  My wireless devices are a Macbook Pro (that I used to do the setup), an iMac, an iPad2, two iPhone4s (plural iPhones, not to be confused with the new iPhone4S), an HP Photosmart Premium All-in-One printer, and the problem - a Dell Inspiron N5010 PC running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1.
After completing the set up I had to re-enter the WEP security code on each Apple device and the printer when they first tried to connect to the network, even though the code had not changed, but other than that one-time minor inconvenience they all connect fine.*
The problem is with the Dell PC.  It can 'see' the network - the SSID shows in the list of available networks - and it sees excellent signal strength, but it connects with only "Limited Access".  Neither disconnecting from the network and reconnecting, nor disabling and re-enabling the network card, changes that.  Initially, running the Network Troubleshooting routine produced the following result:
    - The 1st (and only) stopping point was a request to confirm the WEP security code.  The code shown was correct, but I re-entered it and continued.
    - The troubleshooting routine then went through a series of other checks without stopping for user input or confirmation.
    - The troubleshooting routine ended by showing 2 Problems Found:
    1) the security code confirmation
    2) 'IP problem' (not the exact wording, but something about an IP address problem).
After doing some research on the internet, I downloaded and installed Airport Utility on the Dell PC and tried to run it.  On launching Airport Utility I got this message on the screen, "Unable to find any Airport wireless device".
Again I tried to run the Windows Network Troubleshooting routine.  Again the 1st item is to confirm the WEP security code after which the routine runs to completion without stopping.  Now there are 2 different problems found:
    1) Problem with wireless adapter of access point - Detected - triangle with ! inside
    2) Windows cannot connect to [SSID network name] - Fixed - circle with checkmark inside
Any suggestions for what might be going on?  What hardware or settings I ought to check and report back on?
Thanks in advance for and suggestions anyone can offer.
    * Aside: my iMac shows that the network security type is WPA2, not WEP, but it connects just fine anyway!

Thanks again for your suggestions and instructions, now wish me luck!
    Yes, I do!!
Never mind - Google is my friend!
    Sure is.
    2. how do I determine which of the two networks to use?
Easy.. pick the best one. ie best signal strength and speed. 5ghz is better speed and poor range. 2.4ghz the opposite. At any point pick the best. Best signal / speed. Close to the router, it will be 5ghz.. further away 2.4ghz will be better. Try both.. it is a 10sec effort.
The reason to do this manually is the TC is designed to swap channels automatically when there is interference.. It is also so the client on the computer (mac only) will auto swap between 2.4ghz and 5ghz for whichever is faster. So you have auto channels on top of auto band.. and even the Mac gets confused .. the PC has no idea.
    3. What channel should I set for the 5 ghz network?  (If I recall correctly, the TC is presently using channel 6 - does that apply to both networks?)
No.. 2.4ghz uses channels 1-11 in USA.. 1-13 in Europe Australia..
There are 3 non-overlapping channels, 1, 6, 11.. pick one and try it. Better still on the PC download the application inssider.. and you will see which channels are in use.. usually all of them if you live in a city in USA or moderately weathly country. Pick the channel with the lowest signal and use that. Since only those three channels are non-overlapping picking channel 9 for instance because nobody is using it, is pointless. Wireless on both channel 6 and channel 11 will then interfere with it. Use the lowest signal channel, out of the three, 1, 6, 11. (13 in Europe 14 in Japan).
5ghz has a large range of channels, beginning from 36 up to 151 (at least in Australia) .. your country if different will vary. Use the lower channels if possible.. but there is not much interference yet on 5ghz. Usually you can just use 40 which meets lower end equipment. eg early versions of the AEBS and TC do not offer a large range of channels.
    4. Can I leave the security as WEP until I get everything working?  I understand that WPA2 is better
WEP is equal to a strong door on a tent.. it is next to useless. It keeps out people who are not trying to get in. And offers 1min of difficulty to the guy with the knife. Use no security to do setup.. then use WPA2.. if something doesn't work with wpa2 you can use wpa at a pinch. Throw away any item not compliant with at least WPA. WEP is not a rated security for N wireless.. it could well not work or fall back to G wireless. So for testing just turn off security.. when it is working jump straight to wpa2.
    5. Why turn on the Guest account?  I don't see that it's used in the subsequent steps.
If you ever want to write to or read the hard disk from PC.. you will have issues with security on Windows not matching the TC.. You do not need to use guest account (this is hard disk access not wireless btw).. if you never want to use hard disk. I added it for completeness. You can also fight your way through the difference in security between a Mac and a PC with win7 in particular.. loads of fun. If the disk is going to be on a private network and the TC has to be really, then use guest network. If anyone wants to break in it is no more difficult than holding down the reset for 1sec and it will reset all the passwords. So what more security do you need. Guest is fine.
    6. Will do.  I do have a workgroup specified on the 3 computers, but it's one that I created and it's not named <WORKGROUP>
SMB uses workgroup name.. what name you use is irrelevant.. again this is for hard disk access. If you just want internet it is not necessary to worry about. Put into the workgroup name the name of YOUR workgroup. But it makes it appear in the windows networking as a network drive and that can be helpful.
Somewhere on the Dell PC I've seen that both ipv6 and ipv4 show as not used, don't recall where I saw it though, and there did not appear to be any way to change it.
You have internet connection it MUST use TCP/IP which has to be either ipv4 or ipv6 or both. That is how the internet works.. you cannot have neither. You change the settings in TCP/IP properties box associated with the wireless card.. go to device manager and the wireless device. Click on it and go to properties.. see TCP/IP and go the advanced.
You need to learn to use the networking tools.
The key tool is ping.. that allows you to see if a device is available and responding on the network.
Command window is same as terminal on the Mac.. (well near enough). You do low level commands.. both will do ping.
You can also get all the settings in the network.
Simple one is ipconfig in windows.. ifconfig in the mac.. that will show the IP address of all the network clients. In windows there is a full description if you do ipconfig /all
These commands are very important to use and learn about.

  • Time capsule not recognizing Toshiba external hard drive

I have a new time capsule unit.  it is up and running and works great.  I bought a Toshiba 1TB external drive and plugged into the usb port on time capsule.  I restarted Time capsule and it does not show up on my Macbook air anywhere (just bought this week).  i plugged the Toshiba directly into the Mac Book and it recognizes it just fine, but not recognizing through Time capsule.  Please help!
    thanks!

Is the Toshiba drive formatted HFS+ without guid partition. If not redo the format.
Not all USB devices are recognised on the TC.. you sometimes have to use a powered hub. even though the hard disk is powered.. even then there can be usb chips the TC is not able to recognise as it has a limited number of drivers.

  • Time Capsule not on same network?

I've been backing up to a 2TB Time Capsule using Time Machine for months now. Had to get a new router, and went with a dual-band Netgear (N750). I've set up both my Macbook Pro and the Time Capsule to use the 5GHz band, and confirmed both are on it. However, my backups seem to keep failing even after the progress indicates several GB have been backed up. I receive two messages each time:

This is all very funky and a little new to me. It's my first dual band router. I set up both a 2.4GHz and 5GHz private and guest network, using WPA2-PSK [AES]. I've made sure that both my Macbook and the Time Capsule are using the 5GHz private network. I first started off with my Time Capsule using it's same static IP (192.168.1.42), and have tried it in DHCP mode in case static IPs were the problem. I also tried giving my Macbook Pro a static IP, but it didn't seem happy with that. So, from what I can tell, I've got everything set up correctly. Except for the fact that it consistently fails to backup since I switched routers.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

As far as I know, the TC is not in either router or bridge mode, it's just another device on the network. There's a "Wireless Mode" option within the Airport Utility that I have set to "Join a wireless network." That sounded like it'd just be on the same network as the other devices. I figured "Create a wireless network" would be TC as WAP, and "Extend a wireless network" would be TC as a bridge.
The MBP and all other devices also get their IPs from the Netgear router. I'd double-checked the settings. I have basically two different networks "Network" and "Network5" ... mainly because it looked like that's how the Netgear was set up to operate and I thought it better to avoid confusion. I thought it may help me to make sure I'm using the right connection for the devices that can see the 5GHz to avoid interference. I've got an Apple TV and a Sony Bravia with Internet apps on the same network, as well as iPads and iPhones. Both the MBP and the TC are on the 5GHz network, which is set to use channel 153. The Netgear router is set to auto for the channel of the 2.4GHz network.
I did try to set up the MBP with a static IP, but couldn't get a valid network connection at that time. Thought I had it using the same subnet and gateway information as the TC, but maybe not.
Presently Time Machine says it's backed up 23.74GB of 43.1GB. I'll have to see if this one completes.
    Thanks!

  • Restore from time capsule not working

Like many others I received this email last week:
    Dear iMac owner,
Apple has determined that certain 1TB Seagate hard drives used in 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac systems may fail. These systems were sold between October 2009 and July 2011.
My imac is backed up every day to my time capsule. When they replaced my hard drive they suggested that since I was using time capsule that i do a complete restore and not copy info from my old hard drive since there was a problem  with it. After doing a complete restore I find there are many applications that did not get restored, like iPhoto, Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, Photoshop, and many others. I can see individual photos that are in iPhoto, just not the application. When I go into time machine I see none of these programs. Needless to say I am in near panic mode, having no idea how this could happen or how I can get them reinstalled. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

You can erase & install the system again, and when finished migrate your data within the setup assistant from the backup volume. With this method the system files are installed fresh from disc and not transferred from the backup.
