Time machine and network Lacie drive

Hi,
I have an network Lacie drive (1GB) that I just connected to my local network. I started the time machine, and after a few minutes I get this error message:
"The backup disk image "/Volumes/openshare/Peter Lauri's MacBook.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 45)."
Anything I can do about this? Anyone that has a Time Machine setup working with Lacie drive or other network drive?

yes, they are. supported are the devices that are officially supported by apple and are guaranteed by apple to work for TM backups. that btw includes working now and also in the future after any possible updates to time machine. anything else you may want to use for TM backups apple makes no promises about. if you run into problems with such devices- you are on your own as far as apple is concerned.
now, all that said, there are a few 3rd party NAS devices that came out relatively recently (that includes your Lacie NAS) that claim to support TM backups. they have no blessings from apple to say such things but TM does seem to work and work quite well with such devices. for example, I don't think I've heard any complaints about problems with your Lacie NAS model as a TM drive.
so that's how things stand. AFAIK, the reason why some NASes work and others don't with TM are mostly technical and have to do with whether or not a particular NAS model implements all the features of afp that TM needs to work correctly.

  • Time Machine and Networked external hard drive

    My family has thee macs and one PC, all under the same roof. All the Macs are 2008 and later models (MacBooks and MacBook Pros, with Leopard or Snow Leopard).
    I lost a load of data last weekend and my i-disk did not contain a backup of all the data, pics etc lost which came as a nasty shock. Bolting the stable door after the horse has bolted, I've bought a Western Digital 1TB external hard disk and connected it to the USB 2 port on my linksys Gigabit N+ router. This network device does appear in my list of shared devices and I can manually copy and paste data to it, but Time Machine doesn't seem able to see the device to enable me to automate the backup process.
    I've looked for relevant posts on this forum but can't see quite the thing, can you help me please?
    What if anything can I do to get Time Machine to do automated backups and can this be done via the network router to enable others in the family to do likewise?

    To expand a bit on one of the options Kappy mentions, if one of your Macs is stationary, you can back up over your local network to a shared drive connected directly to it. See #22 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
    It's "iffy" and not supported by Apple, but some are able to back up to a USB drive connected to a recent-model Airport Extreme. See the Using Time Machine with a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum. As mentioned there, don't depend on those 100%; also maintain some sort of secondary backups, in addition.
    But that's something I learned (the hard way, of course) long ago: Airport or not, never trust your backups to a single app or piece of hardware. No app is perfect, and no hardware is trouble-free indefinitely.
    Or, you may be able to find an alternative app that will back up to your setup. See Kappy's post on +Basic Backup,+ complete with links to the web sites of each product.

  • Using Mac Mini, Time Machine and External Hard Drives as a Backup Server

    I own a graphic design studio and have been looking for a long time to create/buy a no-thinker backup system for my macs. I have 4 workstations that I would like to backup to one central "server".
    So what I was thinking was buying a Mac Mini, 3-4 external USB 2.0 Hard drives, external Blu-Ray burner and upgrade all our systems to OS 10.5. What I need to know is, will each work station with Time Machine on it back up across the network to a specific drive on the Mac Mini? If I have each workstation automatically mount one external across the network onto the desktop, will Time Machine recognize that hard drive as a legitimate drive to backup to?
    Having the external Blu-Ray disc burner will give me the ability to burn data to a disc so I will have a way to take some of my information off-site. Since we are a graphic design studio, we use large amounts of disc space and regular DVD-R (4.6 gigs) is just not enough to back up some projects.
    Can someone enlighten me, and tell me if this would work or not. It's the only way I can see me creating something that has enough space, will back up automatically across the network and allow me to make off-site copies of my data without spending $5,000.00.

    I'm a member of a freelance graphic artist team and have been scraping by with my MacMini and CS3. I recently obtained a used iMac (approx. 2 years old) and, instead of painstakingly transferring everything left on the Mini to the iMac, I wanted to know if it's possible to turn the MacMini into a pseudo external hard drive using the FW800 port.
    I already had an external attached to the Mini and plan on using that as well, but I tend to hoarde information and run out of space really quickly. So keeping the mini around, preferably in a way that I can access it as an external through my iMac, would be perfect. I have very little experience with networking and don't have a wireless connection (yay modem cables!) so I don't quite know how to figure this out.
    Has anyone done this? Would a FireWire 800 work? Would I need to set up a network between the two and use them as independently connected computers?

    have imac 27 inch.   I plan to bootcamp the drive and install win 7 ultimate to run AutoCAD. I want to backup the imac using time machine and the boot camped drive to one device.  Can time capsule be partitioned to use time machine for osx and win 7 backup for bootcamp drive.

    You cannot backup a Windows partition or system using Time Machine. Nor can you partition a TC as far as I know although Airport Utility may allow that now. See:

    Of course you should carefully read the documentation that came with your TC to find out what options are available.

    I have a 1T external hard drive and Time Machine has backed up my entire Powerbook G4 laptop on it. I would like to free up space on my laptop by deleting some things that I want to save on the external drive, but don't need on the laptop, how can I do this? Every time I try to delete something from the laptop, it simultaneously disappears from the external drive. Please help!

    I think the point to address is that an intrinsic part of "backing up" is that you always have two copies of something. One original, and one if you lose the original, either if you accidentally delete it, or the hard drive crashes, etc. What you want to do is backup a file through Time Machine, and then delete the original - which is NOT a sensible backup procedure (because now you still have only one copy of your file).
    That aside, Time Machine is designed to be a continuous backup of your system at any point in time. So if, last week, you had a certain file A on your main drive, but you deleted it yesterday, you can check in Time Machine and you'll see it in last week's backups but not in any you made today. You should always use the Time Machine interface to do this - don't go into the backup folder yourself and try to look around (and certainly don't delete anything you find there), since that will be misleading.
    If you did want to delete ALL copies of a certain file from your backup, you should go into the Time Machine interface, locate a point in time where that file exists, highlight the file and go to the Action (gear) menu in Finder and choose "Delete all backups of this file".
    It seems that what you actually need to do is make an archive of files you don't need on a regular basis (which can then get deleted from your main drive). Burn them to a CD or DVD, or copy them to another hard drive, but don't delete them from the Time Machine backups (better safe than sorry).
    Partitioning is a way to convert a physical drive or other storage device into one or more logical volumes, so that the Finder sees them, and displays them, as separate drives. So you could have a single external drive, but create three separate partitions (using Disk Utility) which mount as three separate drives. Under Mac Help, search for "partitions" - there are several useful documents there.

  • Problems with time machine and external hard drive

    Hi all
    In 2009 with my imac I bought a WD external hard drive which the computer says is 148GB formatted. I recall that the hard drive contained folders with files for the running of the hard drive when I bought it - and after it had been plugged in to a mac and used as a time machine, it no longer worked on windows computers.
    Now I have used 195 GB on my computer's internal hard drive and wish to stop using the external hard drive as a time machine and instead use it for swapping files between computers and the like.
    How can I wipe the time machine back ups and start using it as per usual again? do i need to obtain the WD files from somewhere?

    Hi Nick,
    Avoid the WD files completely, not needed & often a problem.
    You need to erase the Drive, & to use it on both Format it MS-DOS/FAT32, on the Mac or PC, but will have a 4 GB filesize limit, as well as other limitations.
    One option not mentioned yet is MacDrive for your PCs... allows them to Read/Write  & Format HFS+, so no need to reformat it...

  • Help w/ Time Machine and 2 External Drives + Main Drive

    I need some help on the best possible setup with the tools on hand...
    Currently I have the following:
    iMac with 500GB Hardrive
    My Book with 2 TB Hardrive
    My Book with 1.5 TB Hardrive
    What I want to do (in my head anyways) is have my main drive for my normal applications (ilife, iworks and everything else under the sun) and use the 1.5 TB for my iTunes as i have alot of movies and music and then use my 2 TB to back up the main drive and 1.5TB drive that way if my 1.5TB drive dies my iTunes are still in tack and likewise for my main drive with my applications.
    before I go ahead and do this... is it best just to use time machine on my 2TB drive? or should I parition it say 1.5TB for Time machine and 500 GB for Carbon copy so I can boot off of that drive if need be?
    I have done some research on the subject but just want to make sure I'm not missing a step or if there is a better set up I should do with my current gear (500MB main drive, external 1.5 TB and 2TB drives)

    (but it is growing). I'm in the mitts of ripping my purchased DVD's to itunes so I can watch them VIA Apple TV.
    The whole reason for me buying the 2 external drives was to ensure my itunes files wouldnt be lost in a hardrive failure as I have a very large DVD collect (around 300) and as you know its very time consuming to copy them to itunes in the first place and if my main drives dies Im not sure if I would have the patients to re-copy everything to my iMac.
    you can use the 2TB drive to back up everything you have now via TM. but if it grows much more then I would suggest using a different backup solution as outlined in my first post. TM needs space for incremental backups and some overhead just to operate. most other backup tools don't.

  • Lost Time Machine and Network when Network Cable Unplugged Briefly

    Hi,
    I rearranged my desk and unplugged time machine (airport) from my network. When I plugged it back in it had gone to default settings with no sign of my previous network. I had to set up a whole new network and set up time machine as if it was new. When I finished and opened time machine I can see the previous files I had saved on it (by creating folders on it- something I won't mess with again), but have no idea where all the backups are. It still had all my default info on it (It new it's name but no sign of my previous network). Fortunately I just bought a new macbook pro so I'd already duplicated my data and I don't need the backups but is there a way to redirect time machine so it sees them? It also used to say that it was full and now the light is green and no warning about being out of space and overwriting my old files. I'm afraid to mess with it.
    What happened? Anyone else experience this?

    Some of this may be terminology problems:
    *+Time Machine*+ is Apple's software that performs backups.
    An +*Airport Extreme+* is a wireless router that you can connect a USB drive to.
    A *+Time Capsule+* is Apple hardware combining a wireless router and HD.
    In one place you say you'd set up Time Machine, but in another you mention creating folders on "it" (I'm not sure what "it" is).
    Could you clarify your setup please?

    Is it possible to set up the time machine to a network file server which my macbook is able to see and use? Right now, time machine is limited to be used with a delicated external HD or another Mac...
    It would be convenient to share files between my 1st mac and other windows PCs.

    You might want to try one of the workarounds in #Q3 of Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.
    Have you ever used Time Machine Editor? Is it worth downloading and using?
    It's not recommended;  Time Machine usually works best the way it was designed.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #13.

  • Time Machine and External Hard Drives

    I am running Mountain Lion 10.8.1 on my iMac.  I have 2 external 2TB drives that I have configued in Time Machine for backups.  I have a LaCie ruggedized external hard drive I use on both my iMac and MacBook Pro for my pictures.  My Lightroom library is on this LaCie drive and depending on what I'm doing or where I'm doing it, I might have the drive connected to my iMac via firewire or to my MacBook Pro via USB3. 
    I want to know if I configure Time Machine to backup up my Lightroom folder, what will happen if when I eject it and disconnect it from my iMac?  Will Time Machine just skip over it because it's not connected?  Will it just pick up where it left off when I reconnect it?  I want an automatic way to back up this folder. 
    Suggestions/comments?

    On Snow Leopard & I would assume in the newer OS versions even though it won't automatically back up until the next scheduled time, you can click on the little time machine icon or otherwise access Time Machine Controls & click Back Up Now.
    I do that w my laptop when I've been using it elsewhere & then I want to back up before shutting down for the night.

  • Back up using time machine and external hard drive

    I am having a difficult time deciding the best way to back up important documents. 
    I have:
    1TB internal hard drive
    3 TB external hard drive and
    1TB external hard drive
    I currently have about 1TB worth of data to be stored, but that will increase to about 1.5TB once I get a bunch of stuff off the HD camera's hard drive.  I would like to keep my internal hard drive somewhat free to keep the computer running fast, but also want to make sure I am properly backed up. 
    Should I put ALL (or nearly all) of the files on the 3 TB external hard drive, and have time machine back that up and not worry about the rest? I'm a little weary about putting all of the files on one device even if it is backed up by TM. 
    If I do this, do I need to back up the 3 TB external drive in addition to using TM?

  • Using Time Machine and external USB drive for multiple Macs

    I just bought a 1.5TB external portable drive.  I have 4 macs in the household that might have about 400 - 500 GB of total HD capacity for the four of them.  I am very confused on whether to create a separate partition for each mac, or let Time Machine manage the entire, single-partition drive.
    The reason I ask is because I have run into issues with a smaller external HD where it didnt seem to know to remove old backups to make room for new ones.  But, its' possible the 750 GB drive was too small to do what it needed to do.
    So, I am looking for some definitive information on the best way to do this.  Obviously, i'd rather leave the 1.5TB as a single partition, and hope (and expect) Time Machine to manage the backups of the four macs in such a way that it can properly make room as backups are added to the drive.

    You can do that, but not simultaneously. TM only has one destination a a time; you can back up to the TC, then select the external HD via TM Preferences, then switch back.
    I've been down the road of using SD (cloning) and am ready to move on to another backup strategy. Cloning works fine but it dedicates a drive 100% of the time where TM doesn't.
    I don't know what you mean by that. I use CarbonCopyCloner (similar to SD) in addition to full TM backups, so I have two separate, independent backups, on two separate drives, and get the advantages of both. You can partition an external drive (but not a Time Capsule), so you could have your clone on one partition, and other things in one or more additional partitions (I do that as well). As long as the "clone" partition is the same size as your internal HD (or at a minimum, at least 15% larger than the amount of data on it), you can use the rest of the space for anything else.
    See #5 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum for detailed instructions on setting-up a drive for Time Machine. The same procedure works for setting one up for a clone and other partition(s), too.

    Hi! I have a G Drive Slim that I've been using as my time machine backup drive for a few years. Now I'm in need of an external hard drive, bigger than a flash drive but really not that big, and I was wondering if the G Drive Slim could be used for both purposes at the same time. If I start putting files from my computer directly on to the G Drive Slim, will it erase my time machine backup files? Not sure what to do here. Thanks!

    I would recommend you to get a second external drive to put your files there. In case you want to put the files in the same external drive which you have your backups in, you need to make a second partition. This has to be done in order not to damage Time Machine structure.
