Time Machine does Backup to Disk Image but won't browse.

Hi Everyone,
I really enjoy using Time-Machine as my backup-utility as it's build into the system, updated by Apple and comes at no extra cost. Still, there has never been an option to encrypt the Backup. As I'm usually keeping my Backup in the Office, I wanted it to be a little more secure otherwise everybody could just pick up the Disk and read all my private files.
Anyway, I went ahead and manually created a TimeMachine Sparsebundle on my Local Partition (The ones TimeMachine usually creates on Network Volumes). I chose 256bit encryption and pointed the TimeMachine preferences at the Partition where I store my TimeMachine Sparsebundle.
External HDD > Partition 2 'TimeCapsule' > Encryptet Sparse bundle 'TimeMachine'
I had to manually create the TimeMachine Plist on the Volume and now it automatically mounts the Sparse bundle and does the Backup once every hour.
THE PROBLEM: The issue is, when I decide to go back and restore files trough TimeMachine, it'll present me with the Partition the Sparse bundle is located on, which contains nothing. I can only get TimeMachine to browse trough my Sparse bundle (Backup) if I manually choose to browse other Backup disks.
Is there any way to tell TimeMachine to always browse this particular bundle. I don't understand why it doesn't work as it also does the Backup.
I hope somebody can help me with this.
Thanks,
OldSchoolMacs

You can do it your way, but the intended way is to use FileVault to encrypt your Home folder. When you log out of your account then TM will begin the backup of the encrypted Home folder. No need for you to encrypt or decrypt your own disc image.
If you allow TM to run hourly backups as you now do, then both your Home folder and your backups are not secure.

  • How to use Time Machine to backup a disk image

I have my iPhoto libray in a disk image in the shared folder so that it can be shared by two user accounts.  Is there a way to use Time Machine to backup the mounted image?  I don't want to backup the entire disk image file every time there is a change in iPhoto (over 200GB!).  I'd like to just backup the changes, but so far, it doesn't seem to work?

There is no way to back up a mounted, writable disk image with Time Machine. If you want to keep data on a disk image, the best option is to convert it to a sparsebundle, which consists of many small files instead of one big file. It will be backed up much more efficiently, but only when not mounted.

  • Can Time Machine write to a Disk Image on a Time Capsule?

I just inherited a Gen 1 Time Machine (500gb).  I have three Macs on my network.  In my current set up I have an external 500gb drive split into three equal partitions, one for each Mac.
I know I cannot partition the TC HD, but I also know I can create one or more Disk Images.
Question:  Can Time Machine write to a Disk Image on a Time Capsule?
    Thanks.
    MotionMan

I know the backups will not mix.
One of the Macs is a MacBook that only hooks up to the network every couple weeks.  Before I partitioned my existing TM backup disk, the TM backups of the other two Macs were filling the disk.  When the MacBook then tried to make a backup, the oldest backups of the MacBook would drop off.
So, the other two Macs had backps for months, but the MacBook ended up with much less.  That is what lead me to the 3 partitions, so each Mac had an equal space for their backups.
Odd that there there is no good solution for this.

  • Does Time Machine still ignore mounted disk images? Specifically, encrypted sparse bundle disk images?

My Time Machine backs up to Time Capsule which cannot be encrypted. I also have confidential data in an encrypted sparse bundle disk image in my home folder. When TM backs up and the encrypted sparse bundle disk image is mounted and I'm accessing the data, does TM back up the data "in the clear" decrypted form or does it exclude the disk image because it's mounted? I've done a little research, but there's conflicting information. Not sure what happens in Lion now...

Time Machine does not backup mounted disk images! The encrypted sparse bundle disk image was mounted, I updated a doc and did a TM backup - the file was not listed in the TM repository and the doc remained unchanged in the encrypted sparse bundle disk image on TM. Then I ejected the disk image and did a TM backup - the updated doc was backed up in the encrypted sparse bundle disk image! Thank you!

  • Time Machine does backups, but cannot find those backups

I have a 27-inch iMac (mid 2011) what is wirelessly connected to a 3T Airport Time Capsule.
    I am running Yosemite 10.10.1
In the Time machine preferences, the latest  backup was made at 5:54p (C) today. The earliest was made in July 2014.
My problem is that I cannot access the backups. When I enter time machine I get the "waiting" window title and then a message that says the backups cannot be found and a referral to the time machine preferences. When I go the the preferences, everything looks OK. The proper disk is selected.
I read another post that seemed related to this, but there were so many abbreviations, that I could not understand anything. If anyone does understand this issue, could you explain it in plain terms? Thank you.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

  • Does Time Machine back up mounted disk images?

I keep certain sensitive data encrypted on a .sparsebundle file. If this file is mounted when Time Machine kicks in, will Time Machine back up the unencrypted data to my backup disk?
    Martin S Taylor

I see. But it's not the sparsebundle I'm worried about: I'm concerned about the contents of the disk being backed up.
From what you say, I'm assuming the contents are never directly backed up whether encrypted or not: if the disk is unmounted, then obviously the contents can't be backed up (only the .sparseimage file itself); and if it's mounted – well, they're just not backed up, because this isn't how Time Machine works.
    Have I got this right?

  • Time Machine Restore vs Restoring disk image to Macbook Pro

    Hi guys,
Is it best to restore my new Macbook pro Retina from a 2011 Macbook pro via a time machine backup or is it best and easyer to restore my Disk Image from my old Macbook Pro 'Macintosh HD' to my new SSD in a 2013 Macbook pro Reitna via Disk utility??

If you have a new Mac and an old Mac, then it's probably best just to use Migration Assistant to transfer your data, settings and apps from the old Mac to the new one.
If you have fitted a new, blank SSD to the new Mac, then that will need an OS, obviously, before you run Migration Assistant. However, you can transfer an image of the old computer to the new one -- I cloned my 2009 MacBook's drive straight onto the SSD I put into my 2012 MBP.
Usually, any OS will work on any Mac (that it supports), but that's less true of brand new machines, particularly with new hardware technologies like Retina.
I would install the OS from the Recovery Firmware, and then migrate the data using MA.

  • Time machine full backup after disk and disk permissions repair

my macbook would not boot so i inserted the snow leopard DVD and did a disk repair and disk permissions repair, after that it booted perfectly but when it went to do a backup it did a full backup of 149GB , i am unsure why it has done this and would like to know how to stop it as i am trying to save space on my time capsule.
    thank you in advance

    Brycycle wrote:
i do not wish to let it do a full backup so as to save space on my time capsule but this is the log up till when it started transferring data.
I'm afraid you don't have much choice. You do have lot of space available, though.
    Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:must scan subdirs|new event db|
No pre-backup thinning needed: 165.92 GB requested (including padding), 507.60 GB available
The "deep traversal" means TM compared everything on your system to the backups, and estimates that about 138 GB is new/changed (it adds 20% for workspace on the TM disk - the "padding" in the message).
If there's about 138 GB on your system, see #D3 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for some common reasons for TM to do a new full backup.
If there's more, #D4 there has some common reasons for large backups.
If all you did was repair disk and permissions, neither should have resulted.
the reason i did a permission repair and disk repair while running from the install disk was because my laptop would not boot from the internal disk so i did both just to be safe.
That's fine; just do the Permissions Repair again, while running normally.

  • Time Machine deleting backups, says disk is full when there's lots of space

I recently successfully duplicated the sparse disk image bundles for two computers to a 1TB drive. Time Machine has been working just fine for weeks with this new setup and was backing up normally.
Then I began getting "Disk is full" errors and Time Machine is saying it is deleting back ups to create more space. This is confusing as the disk says there is over 740 GB available -- our back ups are not even totaling 200 GB combined.
    How can I remedy this?
    Thank you.

    Hank,
I realized last night, after I shut everything down for a tornado warning form Hanna - no tornado..., that the spaces in the disk name were your immediate problem.....sorry
In addition to dragging the file, you can also type '\' as an escape character before things like spaces to say treat them as part of the name not, as in the case of a space, as a separator.
In your latest error message the term 'socket' implies possibly a link to use of a wireless connection. I seemed to have no trouble using a wireless link to re-size yesterday. I was pointing to a USB drive attached to the TC, not the TC's internal disk. You'd think it wouldn't make a difference, but......
I didn't want to mess with the live sparsebundles on the TC drive, and had copies for experimentation on a USB drive on the TC.... But today I tried it on the TC's drive via wireless and it works.
You might try a direct connection via Ethernet cable if you can.
In addition hdiutil has a -verbose option which you can add to the command line that gives additional detail and may yield a clue to the problem. It also had a -debug option that provides even more voluminous output which the man page says is "- debug and -verbose generate almost entirely independent outputs."
    The format is like this:
hdiutil resize -size nnnG -verbose /path...to..sparsebundle
The -verbose and/or -debug go after the resize verb.
The -debug output is truly humongous! Try -verbose first if you need the diagnostic output.
These might help us get you going.

  • Time Machine Full backup after disk move

I have followed the instructions for moving my Time Machine backup to a new disk as per instructions here.  However, once I have completed the copy to the new disk, the first time that time machine runs, it seems to be do a full new backup and therefore there is not enough room on the new disk.
I get the following error: Time Machine could not complete the backup.  This backup is too large for the backup disk.
Please help, this is driving me nuts.
    Thanks,
    Ian.

Peeps, I am so sorry, I am such an idiot, I have just realise what I have done wrong!!!
Whilst trying to build my new drive (part of which is to be my new Time Machine backup) I created a 500gb backup in my local Documents folder - this is why my initial Time Machine backup was so large, not because Time Machine was trying to do a full backup!!!
    Thanks for looking,
    Ian.

  • HT201250 Time Machine does not recognize external drive at start up

I have an external WD 2TB drive which I use as my Time Machine back up drive.  When I restart the iMac desktop the Time Machine drive does not start automatically and I must open Time Machine each time and remember to identify the external drive that contains my Time Machine back up data.  Is there some way to make this drive the default Time Machine back up device when the system starts?  It is annoying to have to remember to do this each time my machine restarts.  I have a drive icon that displays as "My Book" on restart where the Time Machine icon is located but this icon is yellow and my Time Machine drive icon is blueish green.  Once I set the correct drive it will go into the mode to refresh the backup (usually in 118 seconds) and then once the backup is updated then the icon become blueish green and all works normally.  Please help!  Thx Tom

I called Apple tech support and went through the recommended actions with doing the disk check with the Utilities and all checked out okay.  They had to ask the senior support advisor and was told that it does not automatically start the Time Machine drive until the next scheduled back up.  There was a misconception that this drive SHOULD be identified as the Time Machine drive on boot up but that is not the case.  I waited for the next schedule back up after reboot and it DID recognize the drive and it appears to be working fine.
The Time Machine does start on boot up but does not indicate that the Time Machine is recognized until the back up is done then it is back on cycle and will operate normally until the next reboot where it will then refresh during that cycle and become recognized in green.  Until that time the drive will appear as a yellow icon for the disk.
Oh, by the way, the drive has external power on my WD 2 TB drive.

  • Time Machine on non-startup disk?

Does anyone know if Time Machine can be used on non-startup disks? I have a Dual-Mirrored Door G4 running as a file server with two separate internal hard drives, a boot volume with the operating system on it and a second drive with all the data that is shared. I can run Time Machine to backup the boot volume, but what I really want is to run it for backups on the data volume but I can't quite figure out how. Thanks for any help.

Oops, I figured this out, nevermind.

  • HT3275 My time machine does not back up and giving me this error message: The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data-1/Amiel's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use. Pls help.

My time machine does not back up and giving me this error message: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/Amiel’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use. Pls help.

Make sure that there are no other Macs backing up at the present time.
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back in
This will "fix" things about 98% of the time. Post back if you are in the unlucky 2% category.

Could that read " . . . could not access . . ."?  If so, try repairing your backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If not, or if that doesn't help, see #A1 there. Use the TM Buddy widget it details to copy and post the messages here.
