Time Machine seems to be deleting backups unnecessarily

Data (used / total) volumes are as follows:
Macintosh HD: 80 / 250GB (of the 80GB, 23GB is configured to be ignored by TM)
USB drive 1: 463 / 640GB
USB drive 2: Time Machine (see below) / 640GB
All drives are encrypted with FileVault 2.  Some days ago I used TM to back up (afresh) my system disk.  Then yesterday I plugged in my USB drive 1 and backed that up.  The backup completed fine.  Just now, TM informs me that it plans to backup the whole of the USB drive again and I have watched as it has deleted the backup that contained the data from USB drive 1.  When i 'Enter Time Machine' I can see only the very latest backup from earlier today.  I went into Console and checked the System Log for lines that cnotain 'backup' but cannot see anything that suggests a major error.  Below is the output so far for this ongoing backup:

I realise that with the extra space needed, the TM drive is well over half full, but for more than a year I have backed up a similar configuration continuously.  It only registered a problem with capacity when, for example, I moved 200GB of data around on my USB drive.  I have done nothing of the kind since it was last backed up successfully yesterday.
I can see that, having decided to backup the USB drive 1 again, TM needs to delete these existing backups, but I cannot figure out why it wants to back them up a second time anyway.  I have not reconfigured the drive, changed encyptiuon parameters, etc.  I should appreciate any thoughts re how I might investigate this further.  Thank you.

Linc, thank you.  Below is the output from the command.  I realise that the system has done more backups since the last process you asked me to undertake - if this is a problem, let me know and I can start again (or is there some way of capturing the log for a specific backup?).

  • Time Machine 1.1 sometimes deletes backups that should keep

About two years ago I was intrigued about the disparition of several Time Machine backups. After changing to a larger external backup disk, I've been trying to follow the behavior of Time Machine. Overall, it seems to be quite predictable, corresponding to what is explained in its window: mostly keeping hourly backups during 24 hours, then, from these, only keeping the first one in each day during 30 days, and then, from these remaining backups, only keeping one per week as "space" permits. Since the new backup partition is large (240% of the HD disk), it is still far from removing oldest backup(s) in order to free space. However, in my system, Time Machine has removed more backups, which should have been kept, in at least two occassions:
Several weeks ago, one month after having the system down for several days, two or three backups (specifically 2012-07-24-002423 and 2012-07-29-120258) that should be kept as weekly ones were deleted, possibly trying to resyncronize to a new day-of-week for the new series of weekly backups to keep.
Recently, and possibly related with heavy memory load giving 7 GB of swap, TM "got crazy" during two activations, deleting up to eight backups, both daily and weekly ones, which were far from being the oldest backups in the volume.
Has someone else observed this kind of behavior? What can be done to avoid it? If, as it seems, it is a bug in Time Machine, how can I notify Apple?
Since Time Machine seems to have a limit of 5 old backup deletions per activation, and given that occasionally strange (and dangerous) behavior, I think that Time Machine should warn when backups older than one month are deleted, and ask permission when 5 or more backups are going to be deleted (at least giving the user the possibility of configuring it so). We are talking here of data security, so some precautions should be allowed when destroying large quantities of data, which otherwise may not be recoverable.
    The essential details follow:

It's a bit disappointing this unexpected and opaque behavior.

  • What to do when time machine seems stuck on "Preparing Backup"

This issue is happenning on my macbook pro, mid 2010. My drive setup is that I have a partition which I dedicated to time machine backups. The total size of my drive is 500GB, and I partitioned about 100GB for time machine. The reason for that is I only needed a few space since I setup time machine to include only the system and the apps, and NONE of the libraries such as itunes or photos. This means that the only backup will be for the system, profiles, and the app. I have been running this for a few months andhas been doing OK until up to now.
My problem is that my time machine seems to get stuck on "Preparing Backup". The latest backup was done last Nov 8, 2011, whcih is about 11 days from now. I am also aware that the time machine drive has only about 200 mb space left, but I am not worried at all because I've always TM to delete the oldest backup to free up space. My oldest backup was still Sept 8, and I'm ok if that will be deleted.
So I'd like to find out why it still stuck on "Preparing backup" ,and I am wondering if deleting a backup can solve it. Can it? what do I do to solve this?
Also, I use my computer alot , so it is basically running for about 18 hours a day, but still time machine didn't quite work well. I have tried reparing the disk using disk utility, but that didn't help.

You may want to revisit that strategy:
A backup on the same drive isn't very secure -- when (not if) the HD fails, you risk losing everything.
In most cases, if there's a problem with OSX the best way to fix it is to just install a fresh version.  But you can't do that from that backup.
    Indeed!
Backing-up apps that way will also be useless in some cases.  3rd-party apps that came with their own installers put other files in other places (and sometimes "helper" apps as well).  Unless you know what and where they all are, and restore them, too, the restored app won't work properly, if at all.
I think you're confusing each other with terminology.  iTunes music and iPhoto pictures are NOT "Libraries", which has a specific meaning when it comes to OS X.    "Libraries", in OS X normally refers to /Libraries and ~/Libraries folders.  This is not where iTunes music and iPhoto pictures are stored. iTunes music and iPhoto pictures are stored within ~/Music and ~/Pictures, respectively.
I have tried reparing the disk using disk utility, but that didn't help.
Disk Utility changed a bit in Lion.  When you select an entire disk, it only repairs the partition map, not all the volumes.  You must repair each one separately.
Wow, good to know.  (What a stupid change to make, for backwards compatibility, if for no other reason!)
See #D1 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting to figure out why the backups are hanging.
Whew.  This editor makes it so hard to make comments inline.  The key thing when time machine seems stuck is patience.  Sometimes it needs to be left to run overnight.  Unfortunately, it doesn't log or report it's progress very well.
Opening Time Machine settings in Preferences plus a command like this left running in Terminal.app is how I monitor progress.  And even so, there is very little logging indicating progress.
    sudo tail -f /Volumes/Time Machine/Backups.backupdb/My\ Computer/2012-07-11-133352.inProgress/.Backup.363731632.496216.log
The parts in italics will need to be adjusted.  Tab completion makes this easy, e.g type
    sudo tail -f /Volumes/
and hit tab, type the first few letters of the relevant volume name, hit tab...
Also, I have a hypothesis which needs testing.
I know that Time Machine gets confused if one deletes large files from a backup - specifically, Time Machine doesn't recognize that the size of the backup has changed.
I know because this made restoring a thinned out time machine backup ("thinned out" by deleting files from within the GUI while inside the Time Machine) to a small SSD harder than it should have been.  I had to restore to a big disk and then clone that volume to the SSD - even though the SSD had enough space, Time Machine didn't think so; it didn't "understand" that it had been thinned.
My hypothesis is that Time Machine also gets confused if the Time Machine partition is resized. I shrunk a Time Machine partition (no it wasn't on my main disk!) and about that time, Time Machine stopped working.  After thinning the volume, it started working again.

  • Time machine - possible to recover deleted backup files that have yet to be overwritten?

I recently had to wipe my hard drive and reinstall my OS after my MacBook Pro failed to start.  I managed to restore all my files from a Time Machine backup on an external HD after installing OS Yosemite.
After my computer is up and running again, I switched on Time Machine again, which started deleting my older backup files to make room for a new backup.  Before I know it, it has deleted all my backup files except for the latest one, the one which I used to restore my computer.
Then Time Machine discovered that it still would not have enough room for the new backup and stopped.  So I don't think anything new has been written to my external HD yet.  Given that Time Machine may not have overwritten the old backup images (fingers-crossed), is there any possibility that I could recover those?  If so, how do I do it?
The old data backup is extremely important for me.  Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you very much.

  • Time Machine seems to be deleting files from the backup disk.

My main disk has about 400 GB of data including nearly 300 GB of movie files. Since I started using Time Machine in February, the backup disk has had about 400 GB of data on it. This morning Time Machine has said on the System Preferences display that it is "finishing backup" and in the process the backup disk contains only 108 GB of something - hopefully some of my data. The file structure looks OK on the backup disk but I am not sure that the data is there.
I turned Time Machine off and back on and for awhile it seemed to be moving data to the backup disk but then it went back to the "finishing backup" mode and the amount of data on the backup disk began to decrease again. This evening I turned Time Machine off and left it off but it turned itself back on. Somehow this does not seem right. This has happened a number of times.
The net result is that I have about 400GB of data on the iMac system disk and about 108 GB on the backup disk. What can I do to get out of this trap and start getting valid backup?
For starters I will dismount the backup drive and then disconnect the backup drive and at least I will have something left on the disk.
    Thanks for the help.

Well, I can't really say what the problem is. You could try to repartition (not just erase) the HD and start Time Machine over again.
Or you could check Time Machine's logs in Console.app, and maybe someone else can help you if it's putting out errors (not my area of expertise).

  • How to do a fresh restart of Time Machine (after HD swap & deleting backup)

Yesterday I upgraded my macbook's HD. There seemed to be a lot of ways to transfer my system to the new HDD, so I went with inserting the new HD, put the old HD in a USB enclosure, booted from OSX cd and told Disk Utility to restore from the original HD on usb. It took the little guy a few hours but then everything was up and running peachy. So far so good.
Then I turned Time Machine back on, and it wanted to make a complete new back up. I had read about that, so I decided to not waste 100s of GB on a second full back up and went ahead and formatted it... thinking that TM would start from scratch and everything would be fine.
But the backup got stuck on 26 GB for 3 hours. The TM widget (tx 2 Pondini) told me that it was waiting for the index to be ready and I stopped the backup. I went back to TM pref. and redid the setup, but when I clicked my backup drive in "change disk" TM told me that I'd better not because it is the same drive the original data is on!?! (screenshot).
It is listed in the 'do not back up' list as it should. Just to make sure, I formatted the backup volume again (ext. journaled)  and verified it: all clear. Though for some reason there is still 200 MB of data on there, not visible in Finder, but if that's not causing the problem I can live with that.
I'm getting confused here... How do I to fix this? Or should I just ignore the message and go ahead?
How should I have set up a new TM from scratch?
    Help would be much appreciated!

(I'm not sure whether TM said preparing when I stopped it, but nothing seemed to be happening.)
No, it had finished preparing, and started copying (once it logs how much space is needed, it's ready to copy), and had in fact copied 26.7 GBs.
My display had gone black, and I've set it to go to sleep when the computer has been inactive for 30 min. The whirring sound was still there.
That's fine; display sleep won't interfere.  If you move your mouse, it should just display.
    Should I be more patient,
    No, something is definitely wrong.
would it really take so long do the deep traversal etc.? Does it need to do that at all when there's nothing on the disk? (that is visible in Finder)
It didn't do one at all (there's no message about it).  Those are only required when the previous backup failed or was cancelled, or there was a very large volume of changes, like an OSX update.  It was doing an initial, full backup.
What we can't tell yet is whether the copy was running terribly slow, or whether it had hung at the 26.7 GB mark.
When you have some time, erase the TM drive and start again.  This time, watch the progress bar: note the time when it starts copying (xx GB of yy GB), and see how far it gets in, say, half-hour increments.  The first ones will be rather slow (it's copying tens of thousands of mostly very small files, and there's a lot to do for each one).
Overall, it should run at, very roughly, 50-55 GB per hour for the whole backup (but again, considerably less at first;  when it gets to your home folder and starts copying, say, large video files, it will speed up greatly).
It may not update the count continuously, but may seem to be going spurts;  there's a problem only if it stops for several minutes.

  • Time machine deleting backups unnecessarily

My imac is backed up via TM to a locally connected USB disk; it's 2tb in size and has 1.22tb available.
Recently I restored some files from an october backup and have just tried to locate other files backed up at the same time. But Time machine is showing my oldest backups as originating in mid-November. Why has it deleted earlier backups when there is so much space available - I'm only backing up one hd to this set and it only contains 879gb of data? Can I find them or are they gone forever? is there some setting somewhere that is limiting my backups to only one month?

    Thanks Linc
Here is the log from the last TM backup to the first, with roughly 9 hours shutdown.
I don't know if there is anything relevan there - analysing (or even understanding) this is not an expertise that I have. if you can make anything of it I'd be garteful. Don't worry if you'd rather pass - its water under the bridge anyway but I'd just like to know what happened.
I've started another backup using retrospect. It served me well for twenty years before ™ appeared, but it's by no means as straightforward but you're right, I should have two backups.

  • Time Machine - strange behavior while deleting old backups

Not sure if this is the right place, because this is actually not on Time Capsule, but on a Time Machine on an external USB drive.
In any case, I searched the web for "time machine delete old backups" and found many discussions of various aspects of this task. My objective is to clean up a partition on a the external drive that I no longer use for active TM backups, but to retain a small set of backups in case I need to go back to them. The partition now has other uses and I need the space. My main TM backup is now on a separate Time Capsule.
So again my objective is not to remove all backups, but just most of them.
It appears that the well-discussed procedure is the following:
    Go into Time Machine.
    Select the Macintosh HD.
Go back to one of the oldest backups.
Click on the Gear > click Delete Backup.
This procedure will remove one Backup at a time, and it seems to take 5 - 10 minutes for each backup.
Here is what I noticed that was "strange":
You could delete a selected backup using the above procedure.
For the first selected backup so deleted, there is a confirmation dialog with a warning message that it is not undoable.
After clicking OK on the warning message, the display backs up to the "Present" backup, and the administrative password is requested.
After the administrative password is entered, the backup starts but control is passed back to the user interface, and another backup can be selected to be deleted.
However, after the second backup is selected and deleted, there is no warning dialog, and no request for the administrative password. At this point the user interface is busy and nothing more can be done until the backup delete is completed. Except that the Time Machine can be exited by first pressing Escape, then Cancel on the lower left of the screen.
If the time machine is exited, there is a Delete Backups progress dialog with a progress bar for each backup  so far requested. If the second backup was requested, as in the steps above, there would be two backups.
I discovered by playing around that either you had to wait within Time Machine for the deletion to complete, or alternatively exit Time Machine. While I was not sure what was going on, I kept starting one backup, then exiting Time Machine and re-entering Time Machine and requesting another delete operation. Each time after entering Time Machine, the warning/admin password sequence occurred and I was able to exit. And then immediately re-enter Time Machine and request another backup. Only by exiting and re-entering could another delete request be made.
When out of Time Machine, I thus saw the Delete Backups dialog with any number of concurrent "Delete One Backup" progress bars.
Because of the nature of the hard links used to indicate backups, I was wondering if these multiple delete operations could possibly be hung in a deadly embrace, so I decided to only do one at a time. Some further study to see if the multiple delete operations were all able to complete would be needed to know if this would be a good way to "queue up" multiple delete requests.
Bottom line: seems like kind of an odd implementation. Would be really nice if you could select many (say 30) individual backups and delete them all at once, rather than taking 5 - 10 minutes each. Again, this is because I am trying to reclaim disk space, but not delete all the backups from a Time Machine backup set that is not in active use.
Also, the method of "queuing up" backup delete requests is kind of odd, but seems to work, with the proviso that I have not yet confirmed that doing more than one at a time actually works.

since the upgrade to SL it seem that Time Machine has problems to completely remove old backups completely. The "removed" backups do not show up in Time Machine anymore, but the backup folders and part of their contents can still be seen in Finder.
Hi, and welcome to the forums.
That happens occasionally, in both Leopard and Snow Leopard, sometimes after something was deleted from the Finder, but also after an abnormal shutdown or improper disconnection of the TM disk.
Run a +*Repair Disk+* on it via Disk Utility, in your Applications/Utilities folder. If it finds errors, but can't fix them all, run it again (and again) until it either fixes them all, or can't fix any more.

No, they are all just fine.

  • Time Machine Failure - Unable to  create backup directory

I've been using time machine for months with no problems. It seems like since I went to the 10.5.2 update I started having problems.
Time machine fails and says a problem occurred creating a backup directory. I'm running an external drive formated to the MAC Extended Journeled. I also set my computer share name with no punctuation and no spaces.
Today I got the failure and I ran repair disc in disk utility and it could not repair the disk. So I erased it, rebooted and reconfigured time machine.
Started running the backup and about 30 minutes into it stopped with the same error.
    Any thing I can try?

Seems I have same problem, I came here for the answer, only to find there appears to be none!
I started off with a new 250Gb internal drive, 50 "Real" Gb to Boot Camp, rest to Mac. Re-installed from original Apple install disks to TIGER, then upgraded to LEOPARD with the Apple upgrade disk that came with the machine as an uninstalled upgrade. All firmware and software updates up to date.
First tried a Maxtor 4+ ext 750Gb Firewire drive for Time machine, 400Gb to Time Machine, other partition for other stuff. Every backup failed with Time Machine, same as the unfortunate gentleman in the pages above. Super-Duper backup to that same drive/partition worked perfectly.
So I bought a 250Gb 2.5" Western Digital drive, put it in a USB/Firewire case and tried that, but every time same problem. It would stall once 123.85Gb of 143.8Gb completed, and get no further. After a few days a reboot or forcequit was needed to stop the process, and on attempting to restart time machine later would only get to about 32kb and fail stating there was not enough space on the drive. (123Gb already backed up, only 19Gb to go, and 106Gb free on the backup drive)
I have re-formatted (Standard Mac extended/journalled format) the drive several times now, and always same result. I have checked the drive, repaired it, and written it over with Zeroes after formatting even, still same resuly, exactly 123.85Gb into the backup it stops and goes no further. I have tried with both the firewire, and the USB plugged into the drive, same result. Time Machine does not even have the courtesy to report which file it got stuck on, so that I could manually delete it if that was the problem. Anyone found the answer to this yet?

  • "TIme Machine could not complete the backup"

My Time Machine has started giving this message. It says it needs 69 GB and only 60 GB are available -- but it is a 500GB drive. I thought it was supposed to delete old backups when it did not have space? That is what it has always done before. What do I need to do?
    Thanks
    Bob

I kept getting that error message, too. And it was with Leopard 10.5, since my Superdrive failed to mount the SL DVD that was under warranty. Apple repair facility sent me a defective disk, so that didn´t help, either.
Finally after foregoing backups for 3 months, I got the Superdrive replaced by a 3rd-party rapir facility and then installed SL. As I also had a new hard drive installed and the Apple repair facility threw away the old hard drive, I WAS REQUIRED TO USE MY 3-MONTH OLD BACKUP.
This worked, so I now have a 640GB WD drive on my 2.6GHz MBP with SL 10.6. I Formatted a Western Digital MyBook in HFS+ and the GUID or whatever, according to Apple instructions for an external backupdrive.
THis drive was working perfectly as a backup drive when connected via USB directly to my MBP.
When connected via USB to my Airport Extreme 500GB Time Capsule, it also worked fine... ONLY THE FIRST TWO DAYS!
Suddenly and for no apparent reason, I am suddenly getting the following error message when Time Machine ties to do a backup to the WD drive connected to the TC:
Time Machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk image "/Volumes/drive/baackupname.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 22).
I have tried connecting both wirelessly and via ethernet from my MBP, but neither of these mattered. I access the internet just fine, and I can see the Time Capsule disk just fine. I also see other network share. Why does Apple seem to be so difficult once you peel the shiny facade away?

  • My Time Capsule/Time Machine has been showing Preparing Backup for past 48 hours  continuously!

My Time Capsule reported Full the other day.  I now have only 26.8MB of 497.96 GB available. Since then it seems to backing up continuously. The Time machine preferences window shows "Preparing Backup" andnothing else, and it has been doing so for at least past 48 hours.  Any ideas as to the problem?
    Stuartyboy

Yes, the problem is the drive is full.
If you have other files or TM back from other computers, TM on your computer having issues will not be able to delete enough to get sufficient space to backup.
Read how to clean up and delete parts of backups.. http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
    Not a good idea though.
    Solution.
    1. Buy a new bigger TC.. cheaper (Than the original 500GB at least), faster and now the smallest is 2TB.
    2. Plug in a USB drive.. archive the TC.. then erase it and start a fresh set of backups.. April 1st great day to do it.
    3. Open up your old TC.. remove the 500GB drive and install a 2TB (if Gen1 a 3TB might even work). Google for how to do a hard disk upgrade.
Problem.. old power supply could die the day after and then the total cost would approach 1. Better to backup, wipe the 500GB and sell it on ebay and buy a new TC with 2 or even 3TB (2TB is better value IMHO).
    4. Plug in a USB drive .. formatted to HFS+ and use that as the target.
Very slow. much slower than the same drive plugged into your computer.

  • Time Machine won't use existing backup folder

Time machine gave me the can't find back up drive error. I did what the support site says, went into the preferences, and reselected the appropriate drive, but now it won't use the existing backup folder. It keeps making a new one called 'user's MacBook Pro 2'. How do I force it to use the old folder, so that I can access my old back-ups?

    gilesrulz,
First, you need to determine WHY it's not choosing to continue using the previous backups.
Has your computer changed in some way? Logic board replaced by Apple?
You reinstalled the Mac OS X system software?
*_Time Machine Always Performs a Full Backup After a Full Restore_*
Actually, this is normal. Anytime your hardware has changed, or you have reinstalled the operating system again, Time Machine will perform a new full backup. Consider the following according to the KB article below:
    *Full Backup After Restore*
Bear in mind that in all cases Time Machine will perform a full backup after a full restore. This is normal. Time Machine will resume incremental backups after the full backup has completed. To view previous backups, Control-click or right-click the Time Machine icon in your Dock or Option-click the Time Machine menu extra and Choose "Browse Other Time Machine Disks," then select your previous backup volume. You will enter Time Machine and be able to browse your previous back ups and restore files. [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338]
So even on unchanged hardware, if you reinstall your system software and restore your user data, Time Machine starts anew, and you will not be able to resume backing up with the same history as the previous backups.
While there may be ways to fool/hack Time Machine into recognizing previous backups without performing another full backup, they are likely rather elaborate.
Ultimately, though, in a couple of months, all the effort to preserve old backups may seem pointless. After all, Time Machine will eventually purge away that data anyways as it replaces it with new files.
It may simply be easier to begin a fresh series of backups while saving the previous backups until your satisfied that you have enough history built up. Then delete the old backups.
    Hope this clarifies some things.
    Cheers!

  • After Migration Assistant, Time Machine refuses to use old backups

I've got to say I'm pretty disappointed with Time Machine.
I just dropped $2,000 on my second-ever Mac, a 15" MBP (Core i7 2GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB 5200rpm hard drive, the stock low-end 15" config).  From what I'd heard about Migration Assistant, I believed it would easily move my stuff over to my new Mac.  For the most part it did, but a few things didn't transfer.  Other posts on the topic detail them accurately - Desktop icon layouts, some settings, Growl, etc.
I told Migration Assistant to use my Time Machine backups, which have been happening without incident for a long time.  My oldest backup is December 2010.
Now that my new MBP is about 99% set up like my old MBP, I am having a problem with Time Machine.
I get the error "Time Machine could not complete the backup.  This backup is too large for the backup disk.  The backup requires 355.61 GB but only 176.44 GB are available."
Looking at the Time Machine drive in Finder, I found that Time Machine is trying to create a new folder for backups and do a full backup.  Where there was once one folder, "[My Name]'s MacBook Pro," there is now an additional folder, "[My Name]'s MacBook Pro 2."  Time Machine is trying to back up into that second directory.
Now, I get it that this is a different computer.  But really, if I use Migration Assistant to restore my Time Machine backup, I think it would be safe for OSX to assume that I want to continue using those backups.  What is especially disappointing for me is, there were things that Migration Assistant did not restore properly.  I probably haven't found them all.  That makes it CRUCIAL that I have my Time Machine backups, but it seems that Apple thinks it's perfectly normal for me to want to FORMAT my Time Machine drive after Migration Assistant did a half-*** job of migrating my data.  I need those backups now more than ever.
I do also have an online backup, but I still don't feel very comfortable destroying six months of local backups just to make Time Machine work again.  Both MBPs were running the same (latest) version of Snow Leopard, so it stands to reason all that needs to happen is a very small incremental backup.
I have been Googling for hours.  All I've found is a procedure for 10.5 that doesn't work in 10.6 where I get down into the Terminal and change a MAC address in a file on the Time Machine volume.  But that's it.  In fact it seems like there's no answer.
Come on Apple, you do everything else better than the competition.  Why do I have to nuke six months of backups or buy a new 2TB external drive to make Time Machine work again?  I assure you I want to continue making incremental backups against my old Time Machine backups, and promise to hold you not responsible should I screw something up by grabbing an old system file or something from February.
Would appreciate any help anyone could offer.

Did you use Setup Assistant when your new Mac first started up, or skip that, create a user account, then use the Migration Assistant app in your Applications/Utilties folder?
If you used Setup Assistant, when you started your first backup you should have gotten the message in #B5 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  It sounds like you didn't (or chose Start New Backup).  And no, the Leopard procedure doesn't work on Snow Leopard.  That's what #B5 is for.
Usually, if you use Setup Assistant, Time Machine will still say it's going to do a full backup, and make room for it, but actually do an incremental backup (very, very slowly).
Either way, it usually deletes a lot of old backups.    We're hoping that will be fixed in Lion.
Once it's decide to make a new backup, there's no known way to prevent it.

  • Time Machine won't increment existing backup.

I've had this problem for the last week and haven't been able to resolve it.
I have a 1TB drive jacked into my Airport Extreme and have been using it for Time Machine forever. Recently however TM has been telling me that there isn't enough room on the drive to complete my backup. It doesn't seem to be recognising that it should be incrementing the existing 600Mb sparsebundle and is trying to create an entirely new backup.
Yesterday I went as far as deleting the old backups off my drive. Then I jacked the drive directly into my MBP (Mountain Lion) and ran a brand new backup overnight.
This morning I ejected the drive, stuck it back into the Airport, and trying to get TM to increment to it but again it's telling me there isn't enough room to create a new backup.
I obviously has something to do with how my MBP is seeing the permissions on the sparebundle when I'm connecting to it via Airport versus directly, but I don't know why. As I said, I've been backing up to TM via Airport like this for years, no problems.
    Any help appreciated.

Not exactly one of Apple's clearest messages.
